Don’t Be Dumb

January 8th, 2020

Use your heads!

Yes, it was Bucco Bruce Arians who coined the phrase “Bucs beating Bucs.” It is without question the key reason this team did not contend for a wild card berth.

Who knows how many potential scoring drives were stopped by dumb penalties? Who knows how many opponents had scoring drives extended due to flags for being too handsy?

It wasn’t just missed kicks and pick-sixes that doomed the Bucs.

Yes, the Bucs led the NFL in penalties this season. That’s just shameful. Only one team in the top-five in penalties committed had a winning record (New Orleans).

Per FootballDB.com, the only site Joe could find with penalties broken down by the rule broken (this breakdown seems dubious because it claims the league-leader in penalties did not commit one personal foul all season), the worst crime the Bucs committed over and over was false starts, 23 times.

Now to Joe this is just dumb. Really dumb. How hard is it to know the snap count? That’s just having your head screwed on straight and paying attention. If you can’t do something as simple as knowing the snap count, there’s not much help for you.

In the spirit of fairness, Joe looked at the teams with more or nearly as many false starts as the Bucs, thinking they play in a lot of domes on the road where it gets loud. That doesn’t seem to be the case.

The Rams had 24 false starts and they play in Seattle, which is notoriously loud, but they only play there once a year.

So if Arians is going to trim the number of penalties, the first place to start is to make sure guys in the offensive huddle pay attention and know what the snap count is. Geez, this is just elementary football.

Every single group of humans who work together for a common goal are a reflection of their leader…..Not talking about BA, not talking about Licht……I’m talking about the vacuous, surreptitious owner siblings.

If all you care about is big profit, with small investment of time and effort, then an NFL franchise is the perfect insulated vehicle

Say Joe, I know you watched all the games like we did. You cannot tell me Jameis was not the direct cause of us losing at least..2 games for sure. Some here will say more but I witnessed 2 definite. I do know this for certain..If jamesi does not change his errors next season, Fans are gonna wanna run him out of town..on a rail.

    Joe,

Penalties are like stunning your big toe.- but teams still have a chance to overcome them

Turnovers are like winning a Darwin Award- killing any chances of producing points.

  8. Blogtalkfootball.com Says:

It comes from Jameis not holding teammates accountable. If he doesn’t show enough drive to expect the best out of everyone around him, he probably won’t hold himself accountable, either, when he messes up.

Do the Buccaneers have more false starts than interceptions next year? Jameis won by 7 this year.

Demar Dotson lead the team in penalties with 10 and lead the false starts with 5. A veteran shouldn’t do that, sorry Demar.

  12. Lavonte 1of1 Says:

Your boy Dotson was a major flag violator, but we’ll give him a pass since he’s nice to Joe

MY HIGH SCHOOL COACH GOT SO TIRED OF FALSE STARTS HE DECIDED WE WOULD ALWAYS GO ON 2. WORKED WELL EXCEPT OTHER TEAMS FIGURED IT OUT AND WE LOST THE ADVANTAGE OF KNOWING THE COUNT. JUST SAYIN

  14. Sport Says:

Now do we have to have circular conversations and parse out all the false starts that were on JW, vs the Oline vs others? Is there an elusive ‘coaches tape’ for us to watch and act like we know what the play call was?

Or can we just chalk it up to a new offensive scheme and coach it out of them in year 2?

    In BA I Trust!

Jake Fromm has declared for the draft!

Him or Eason would/could be strong talent in the Bucs qb position…
bring in Rivers, Dalton or Mariota so the rookie can develop.

MY HIGH SCHOOL COACH GOT SO TIRED OF FALSE STARTS HE DECIDED WE WOULD ALWAYS GO ON 2.

Having once played offensive line, our quarterback was scared of false starts so he nearly *always* had the ball snapped on “one.” Defenses knew this and the offensive linemen were getting the hell beat of them each play and couldn’t open holes because the defensive line would get a step ahead.

Around the third quarter after begging the dumbarse quarterback to call at play “on two,” sure enough the defensive line would be offsides.

  18. Robert Says:

when your qb can’t get snap count right this happens

  19. SteveK Says:

    Lol!

Once in HS, the OG I was lined up against had three false starts in a row. After the third one, I fired off the ball and pancaked him. The refs laughed.

  20. Danny Says:

What does “Other” break out into? Not a great chart when 40% of the penalties fall into a column called “Other”

2014 10th place for most penalties
2015 tied for 1st for most penalties
2016 24th place for most penalties
2017 22nd place for most penalties
2018 7th place for most penalties
2019 1st place for most penalties

Seems clear that Bruce arrogance needs to bring in a coach that will show him how to fix another one of many diffency!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Maybe he should ask coach Smitty to help clean up the clearly sloppy coaching!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What are your thoughts on FA? Who do we keep, let go and bring in?

We are due for a repost soon, aren’t we?

How can jameis hold teammates accountable table when he’s throwing up gifts. There were 2x as many dropped ints that should have been picks by opponents than “Rounded routes” and “wr error” combined. Bucs beating Bucs equals not getting as much in a trade or sign n trade as is possible. He’ll call Miami for a draft spot swap and a 3

  27. BrianBucs Says:

Arians said that next year the Bucs will not be beating themselves.
That means they must be sending Winston on his way

  28. JimmyJack Says:

Hey Joe are those false starts for defense too? Or does it not count encroachments?

If it’s on defense too I’d give a little leniency. I will gladly take us jumping the snap too early a few times if it means we are guessing right other times and blowing up plays.

If the false starts are just offense then yeah that’s atrocious.

  29. Jf Says:

    Hell*

    Ultimately this falls on Arians.

Turnovers and penalties, that almost always determines how a teams season goes.

What is hard about you understanding the Rams play in Seattle which is loud?

He didn’t say that is their home field.
Yes, the Rams DO in fact play in Seattle (Every Single Year) and it is notoriously loud!!! LMAO

    Geez

  35. Buczilla Says:

The constant game stoppages because of poor officiating is one of the biggest reasons why the NFL is slowly but surely becoming unwatchable to me.

  36. Craig Says:

The first half of the season had kind of a Keystone Kops look to it, down to the patented deer in the headlights Jameis look. Am lot of penalties came at that time.

I think it cleaned up a little in the second half. The four game win streak wasn’t too bad on penalties. I don’t have a clue about the last two. The beer stains on the TV were too thick from throwing them at Jameis.

All in all I think they got better as the season went. Still too many holding calls, but that happens with a QB who holds the ball as long as ours does.
