Clutch Catching

Interesting pattern developing. (Photo courtesy of Buccaneers.com.)

Some interesting stats Joe stumbled across recently about a guy who blew up late in the season.

Now we all know Bucs No. 3 receiver Breshad Perriman went nuts in the latter half of the just-completed regular season.

How nuts? Well, per Scott Smith of Buccaneers.com, only two NFL receivers had better numbers.

Only Tyler Higbee of the Rams and DeVante Parker of the Dolphins had more yards in the final five games than Perriman (506). Perriman and Parker led the NFL with five touchdown catches each during that stretch.

This may be a pattern here. As Smith points out, this wasn’t the first time Perriman got hot late in the season.

Moreover, Perriman, who had averaged 21.3 yards per catch during a brief second-half run in Cleveland the previous year, and who had come into the league as a first-round draft pick in large part due to his top-notch speed, proved he could be a downfield threat. His 14 catches of 20 or more yards in the last five weeks were tied for the most by any player in the NFL. Chris Godwin is also among the top five, which is impressive given that he only played in three of those five weeks.

In Joe’s eyes, this is another reason to keep Perriman. Man, isn’t that what a team wants, for a player to get hot when a team is presumably making a postseason run? That’s clutch. That’s money.

And to think the guy getting Perriman the ball, folks walking among us want to run that same guy out of town!

I hated Perriman in the 1st half of the year & loved him in the 2nd half… Yes, retain him…

  2. AJ Says:

Remind me who was on the other end of those throws again???

  3. stpetebucsfan Says:

I truly want to retain Perriman who has become a #1. Admittedly too small a sample to confirm it…but clearly he has that ability.

3 #1 talents on a single team? Imagine. Can’t happen if we resign JW. Not saying JW wouldn’t be worth it just pointing out the cost of retaining JW has REAL consequences. The 25 million is irrelevant in terms of Glazer loot…the cap hit is what really counts.

I certainly concede the team MAY be better with JW than three top flight receivers and an inexpensive QB. But I gotta confess..thinking of a DC trying to game plan for ME…Godwin AND Perriman is exciting. Pick your poison.

Most teams are happy if they can find ONE genuine cover corner…how many have two much less three cover corners on one team.

  4. Buc believer Says:

The second half of the year is when guys really shine in order to get paid next year.

  5. R.O. Says:

The reason he signed here is because he’s been cut by multiple teams. If he thinks the grass is greener for him somewhere else and wants too much money then let him walk. He’ll be back on the street after the guaranteed $$’s in his new deal is up.

  6. firethecannons Says:

Jameis makes us all crazy! Can’t make a decision and stick to it with him. So For me best solution is franchise him and sign Eason in round 2(if available-no trading up).Train Eason while Winston trys to proves himself again. Go O-line or LSU safety in round one.May need to trade a tight end-sad but true.

Perriman made coin but we only have so much coin to go around, sign if any left over coin, resign all of the defense too

  7. TOM Says:

How many players are the Bucs going to sacrifice just to sign Winston?

  8. firethecannons Says:

Another solution is do not sign Winston and get Eason late 1st round. Sign everybody–have plenty of coin to work with, even get O-line free agency. Trade down and pick up picks and get your quarterback of the future who will need lots of O-line talent to stay upright in Arians vertical offense. I like this option BEST although hope to always see Jameis in QB1 role for an NFL team.He may thrive at another team or implode. Ryan Tannehill is a great example of what can happen.

    firethecannons

    Agree…those are the choices.

I don’t view JW and Tannehill as comparable other than their results at their first stops.

JW is…probably will always be…and perhaps even SHOULD be a gunslinger first. I just don’t see JW being happy with 14 attempts!!! If he could “settle” for that and not be the straw that stirs the drink his game would improve dramatically.’

I’m asking..not stating so save the hatred Big Hog…but have we seen any evidence that JW would be comfortable as a complimentary piece that is part of a team and not a look at me…look at me personality.

If we believe he can live with a line of 7 of 14 88 yards and two TD’s with his RB passing for a TD and claiming all the glory…JW could truly be a winner here.

  10. Jaywill Says:

Winston would be happy with 14 attempts if they are winning. That’s all he cares about. Arians would be more pissed about only 14 attempts than Winston.

  11. Im tired and 87 is right Says:

Jay will I concur with your statement. I’m shocked when people think Jameis is a me guy. I have yet to see him act like that.

  12. Craig Says:

I am not sure about Perriman. It boils down to the cost, but a #3 receiver should be able to take over any time the 1 or 2 can’t play. Perriman doesn’t seem to be able to do that.

Both here and at Cleveland he had really bad starts to his seasons. That seems to point to a problem if he has to come in early in the season.

  13. Formerly Tampa 2 Says:

Winston has thrown 88 interceptions and had 50 fumbles in just 72 career games. We need to keep the defense intact & add to the O-line and maybe a good running back, although I think Jones is just getting started. Trade Winston and bring in a decent veteran QB, and whether it’s 2020 or 2021, draft a QB that “might” be a franchise QB.

  14. Alanbucsfan Says:

So, you’re going to commit $40 million to wide receivers (Evans, Godwin and Perriman) ???

  15. Marine Buc Says:

If he wants to be paid like a #1 WR there is no way he stays here. He is a solid #3 and maybe could be a #2 on other teams but we still need to pay Godwin a hefty sum here very soon.

  16. ModHairKen Says:

Who threw the ball to him?

  17. JimmyJack Says:

Yeah Perriman will get a good payday that we can’t afford. Part of it is what he will make next year but perhaps a bigger part is that he will surely want a multi-year contract. Don’t think it’s wise to tie up future CAP space into a #3 WR.

  18. BUC CHEEKS Says:

It pains me to say this… But he’s gonzo! Somebody will “pay this man his muhhhhney!” -John Malkovich Rounders

  19. WestChap Says:

Joe lobbies for paying to retain Perriman and then slides in a throw away plea for Jameis at the end… ugh! Can’t keep both! Wish one of them luck on their payday elsewhere… then we can talk about keeping the other. I know which one I want… no matter who is throwing him the ball.

  20. Buccfan37 Says:

Perriman woke up late in the season to snag some passes and looked tough doing it. I think he goes elsewhere for this coming season.

  21. adam from ny Says:

for perriman’s sake he should stay with jameis, where ever jaboo winds up…

perriman can quickly become a system player without a job if he has no cohesiveness with his next random qb…

he should be smart and stay with jaboo…

also, if he stays in tampa and we continue to underuse our te’s, there is a chance if used correctly, we could have three 1,000 yard receivers on the same team…

    evans, godwin and perriman…

it could happen with no te use, and lack of a heavy run game

  22. adam from ny Says:

he should settle in here in tampa and be our next joe jurevicius

  23. Billy_45 Says:

Shedding Cam Brate’s salary would pay for Perriman.
No way Perriman makes more than $10 mill so his salary combined with Brate
    We don’t need 2 TEs.

If Hudson can block we are fine.

Wouldn’t surprise me though to see BA let him walk in favor of a RG like Scherff.
Take from the deepest pool and add to the weakest!!

BA did make bringing him in a priority though, even knowing how good Evans and Godwin are.

Why hope the guy goes off, just to let him walk?
