Born To Run

January 31st, 2020

Dangerous outside the pocket.

Joe has written several times wondering if the best offense for Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, isn’t a west coast offense.

There have been various stats pumped out in years past that compare Jameis’ numbers outside the pocket, claiming they’re as good if not better than Aaron Rodgers’. Joe once heard former Bucs coach Dirk Koetter tell Jameis he is more Rodgers than Brady, and Joe was appalled at the comparison… until seeing the numbers.

Well, NextGen stats, which come from the NFL via sensors embedded in players’ equipment, show there are few better quarterbacks in the NFL than Jameis outside the pocket.

Actually, there is only one. And he’s playing Sunday.

NextGen stats show in the past two seasons, Pat Mahomes has 22 touchdowns while throwing on the run outside the pocket. Next is Jameis with 15, tied with Deshaun Watson.

But yeah, let’s get rid of this guy for a 38-year old living in the Panhandle who after games has to have the pigeon feces wiped off his shoulder pads.

Run, Winston, run right to the CFL

I see they didn’t list how many picks or pick 6’s he threw on the run or how many times he fumbled

  2. Dewey Selmon Says:

Now lets flip that to on the run int’s. Bet Winston leads it.

  3. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

I was ready to be like yeah, told y’all Jameis is the best….then I saw Mitch Trubisky and just laughed. Not bad though considering all of those guys played more games because of playoffs and of course Jameis suspension last year and benchings.
Jameis’ best stat though IMO is his 19 TD to 1 INt ratio in the red zone. We had the third highest red zone TD%, behind only Tennessee and Green Bay. That’s being clutch where it matters. I know I know but the INTs! They’re killers, but there is still so much really good.

  4. Jean Lafitte Says:

So almost once a game Winston will throw a TD out of the tackle box (pocket)?

Does this tip the balance of his 30+ mil contract negotiations in his favor?

you’re persistent, I’ll give you that lol

  5. Ali Says:

Dude, Winston is a straight baller. Get a run game and we’ll be straight. Go bucs

  6. Larry Says:

Could not agree more!!! I have been saying this for the past 2 seasons. Winston is NOT the best long ball passer in the NFL. He is average at best. He happens to have 2 of the better receivers catching his passes. A west coast system would help him a lot. Look at the 49er’s. They seem to be doing pretty well with a west coast type offense. Joe Montana and Steve Young also did pretty well with it. Winston is no where near their caliber of QB but a west coast would be much better for him. It is never going to happen though with Arians as the head coach. He a strong run game and the long ball. Funny though: If that is true why do the Bucs have one of the worst run games in the NFL???

  7. lambchop Says:

Laughing at Joe reaching. Mahomes is in the SB, Winston is still “trying to get better”. So yea, let’s correlate outside the pocket TDs with greatness. LMAO.

Winston will be asking for Mahomes autograph soon.

Why don’t you compare pick-6’s of all starting QBs?

  8. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Jean- I Hope Jameis isn’t bearing down at 30M+. I don’t think he has warranted that amount of dough…yet. He has always struck me as a team first, selfless type of player. I hope this isn’t where he decides to change that. If he is so confident, he should bank on himself and sign a 2-3yr deal with a chance to hit a big contract next time, if he has earned it. He is still gonna get 25+M/ year. It doesn’t seem like much of a difference but 4-5M could buy a solid RB or go towards one of the looming FAs contracts.

  9. Swampbuc Says:

Arians knows what he has in Jameis. It’s a matter of if Jameis wants $30 Large, $35 Large, or would settle for something in the 20s. There is a price at which Jameis will be a Buc, and a price at which he will not.

  10. Big Stinky Says:

It’s ALL a fact I guess at this point huh????

  11. Big Stinky Says:

Yep! TOAST and we are ALL doing it together in Tampa. The “Wango Tango” too I guess.

  12. Big Stinky Says:

Done. Good to know ANYTHING you would know about the Bucs or would do for this TEAM!!!!

  13. Big Stinky Says:

I am trying to save Some of you and I will DO so if I can okay guys and gals. God is ALWAYS going to save your SOUL too I guess. Yes, it’s done. That story was written I guess TOO and published as well. Did THIS ALL to Him and He wept for me instead of killing me.

  14. Big Stinky Says:

I tried to save that’s all you did here Was trying to actually make a point though. At least May is coming over soon. Yes it’s done and over with. How much is JBF worth do you think???

  15. Pete I Says:

So the #1 overall pick in the 2015 draft needs a certain offense to excel or at least not to throw 30 picks and 7 pick-six’s in a season. Well that is good to know. Wonder what took so long to figure that out.

BA and his golf cart will get right on that, I’m sure…

  16. Big Stinky Says:

    Pete I

He feels SOMETHING for Arizona too I bet you. Arians might wanna go back quickly after ALL of this crap you see. Hell, maybe no one will EVER see available help you can give and get.

  17. Clean House Says:

    Big Stinky,

    What are you talking about?

    Are you ok?

  18. Big Stinky Says:

    Clean House

Yeah, I am okay thanks for asking too by the way. Peace be with you ALWAYS Brother’s and Sisters of MINE. Because that’s what started it and that’s FINAL. Period.End of story I guess.

  19. Big Stinky Says:

Who saw God bless Himself with the first OIL? Only His Son saw I guess. Why would there be a way to get a hold of the Buccaneers phone number? Memory of something happens to me.

  20. Caleb.wilson Says:

Big stinky must be smoking the same stuff as joe

  21. Bob in Valrico Says:

Jameis is good on the run because it takes the progressions out of it and he doesn’t have to survey the entire field.
AS for the west coast offense,I will repeat the Bradshaw comment that
he is a little slow on the the progressions , a skillset necessary for the West Coast offense.Last but not least, He missed a crossing route to Evans so badly in the fourth quarter of the Giants game that the pass sailed behind and high into the safeties hands.

  22. Big Stinky Says:

    Bob in Valrico

Nice job Brother! Very elegant way you danced around there but to agree with you I must be BLlNDED by the light. Don’t know Jaboo or Jameis and the APOSTLES please don’t PROVIDE proof of it happens again to have written ANYTHING. What’s if APPROVED by 50 Cent?

  23. Big Stinky Says:

    Joe

Some quarterback came to when I say jump. What exactly do you think he did from what I can tell. I can tell you CERTAIN he rose up. Why? Because Jesus is COMING soon as possible for EVERY living THIS it is folks. PETER! PAUL!

  24. Big Stinky Says:

That was ALL the PROCESS you needing to FIND out that I have no doubt. Not going to be good enough for SOMEONE though. Did I studied that? Yeah, I went to college too Jaboo!!!!!

  25. Big Stinky Says:

  28. BucEmUp Says:

Rogers used to be the league leader. This is nothing new. Wonston has been one of tge deadliest qbs outsode of tge pocket fot years now, and dummy wrak link byron doesnt draw up plays to utilize a skill set which is really weird, because only a bad coach would be guilty of such a crime and not use what works more often until the degense adjusts.

  29. Big Stinky Says:

You guys doing what you asked? Things that wizards must have been. Concocted story yep!!!

  30. Brandon Says:

Don’t have the stats to prove this but it seems the majority of his INTs were in the pocket and thrown on his first read on a timing or rhythm throw right after his back foot hit the ground on his drop.

  31. Big Stinky Says:

    BucEmUp

Guess we both have to FOCUS more specific about things.

  32. Bucsfanman Says:

Big Stinky- Please take a breath. There’s a time and place for everything and you have overrun this thread with off-topic subjects.

The “west coast offense” and “out of pocket” are not synonymous. West Coast is dependent on short-passing and YAC. Some call it “dink and dunk”. It requires quick throws and quick decision-making.
When he’s flushed “out of pocket”, it becomes backyard football. There’s no design there.

  33. Brandon Says:

Joe, looks like Big Stinky needs automatic moderation, an exorcist, a priest, an English textbook would be nice, and maybe some Adderall, as well as a drug counselor.

  34. Big Stinky Says:

    Brandon

Congratulations Brother! The ONLY reason I see some of you may have to go to the movies is they must not believe things. Have a great morning you guys! Peace be with you Catholic one.
Thanks guys for playing. Did you get Baptized the first place you want to be with my family?

  35. Big Stinky Says:

    Bucsfanman

How are you Brother? I want to see you and your family. Good stuff too. Take care of yourself

  36. Big Stinky Says:

God bless you and your family!!!!!! That’s a comfortable place to be my friend honestly foolish.

  37. Big Stinky Says:

What is FOOTBALL heaven to a TRUE Buccaneers fan? Come on man you are CLOSE but heart is going. Guess you REALLY do believe. Doesn’t HELP arrive to SAVE this year in TIME? Nice!! So why the hell are you talking about that guy? Because I have to save up SUNDAY soul’s now.

  38. Big Stinky Says:

Thanks for watching but it hasn’t been a gunslinger yet. That’s a garden on Earth right there in the next yard. Sorry again but “Family Jewels” going to be able to make you Historically again. Someone’s house is getting picked up Garapolo. You have been warned about Burrow took. That Day was a Jersey Mike’s Sub from here. Remember last supper right now please send.

  39. D1 Says:

What does passing outside the pocket stats have to do with the idea that a west coast offense may be a better fit for Winston? Zero!

  40. Big Stinky Says:

    Joe

Thanks guys for the fun of it and I am very sorry for ALL of this week but Super Bowl coming is NO guarantee. There was a LAST person on Earth for that one Brother! Love Ira, Steve,Lee, and more importantly JBL in general. Was there a possibility for me seeing his podcast. Yeah, I saw it was there Ira did you a favor because of His name and reputation. Remember THOSE!

  41. Big Stinky Says:

Guess God was Ira and I think you guys believe in Him NOW. Sure if you want to see TRUE.

  42. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Joe, you need to ban BigStinky from posting. Probably just drunk or high but he is ruining your site’s posting section. I read the first couple but dude wasn’t making sense. You can’t have illiterate posters hijacking these threads.

  43. Steven007 Says:

    TDTB, preach.

  44. Beeej Says:

Vast majority of JW’s come just standing in the pocket. When he’s flushed, running/jogging for his life, he’s a stone cold sniper

  45. Bob in Valrico Says:

STink, even with some coffee in me,I gotta say I am having hard time following your posts. Are you ok,brother?

  46. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

Only qb in that list to not lead his team to the playoffs

    Sure pay him 30 million

    What a joke

  47. T REX Says:

I don’t want rivers but this isn’t a reason to keep a QB. Joe, come on man. We are having to say the same thing over and over because you persist on pimping Winston. I mean you’re the pimp and one of your girls(Winston) kept giving tricks to the other pimps…what would you do? LOL.

  48. T REX Says:

big stinky, listen kid. Stop with the bull. I sent Joe an email. You’re going to get permabanned for spamming. All your IPs will be blacklisted. Grab a soda and grow up.

  49. Formerly Tampa 2 Says:

Joe, While you are still on the re-sign Winston band wagon, why don’t you explain this away. It is a simple stat that I read recently and it shows the lost chances to score because of Winston’s Ints; Percentage of buccaneers offensive drives ending in an offensive turnover in 2019: 20.7% That is over 20% of offensive drives turned over to the other teams. And we ask why we don’t win games!!!!

  50. Bob in Valrico Says:

THIS is just an observation that you can agree or disagree with, not a comment on the talent of the two QB’s.I often wondered why when Mike Glennon rolled out,it looked more polished than rollouts I have seen from Jameis.

  51. ou812 Says:

Really??? Have you ever seen Fat Albert (#3) run ???

  52. SteveK Says:

Yeah, let’s god rid of Jameis if it’s going to cost more than it did last year. He still has a lot to prove. He didn’t do well in the beginning, London, or end of the year. The particular poor performances at home are shocking and at this point the Bucs need to consider the next chapter of the QB position. There is absolutely no way we can continue to prop up false hope without any results. And to reward that kind of play with a greater pay check/ salary cap commitment would be ludicrous.

If I’m Chris Godwin, and the team decides to pay Jameis and not me, I’m holding out.

  53. MTM Says:

Sure lets resign Winston to a 5 year 125 million dollar contract and hope he figures out not to throw 30 picks. Sounds very reasonable. Lets keep that Brown South slogan for 5 more years of futility going Joe.

  54. Bird Says:

Even comparing jameis with rodgers and mahommes is a big stretch . Whether its on a specific statistic or not

Rodgers will go down as one of the all time greats . Even brady admitted he is the quarterback brady will turn on the tv to watch

Mahommes already has a league mvp , 50 td season and is in the super bowl

    Jameis is ________. ? Uhhhmmmm….. uhhhhmmmm

  55. Bird Says:

Its gotta be METH that big stinky is on.

  56. Hodad Says:

Joe, it takes a quicker twitch QB with a quick compact release to run a WCO. That ain’t Jameis. Think smooth like the two guys playing Sunday. Compact quick, like Brees, Rodgers, Wilson. Think Jameis is anything like that Joe? Sometimes I wonder what you’re looking at in regards to Jameis.

  57. Bob in Valrico Says:

    great point ,Hodad.

  58. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

I guess BS had to go to work after his last post (7:31 am) or maybe the Joez finally put a straight jacket on him.

Anyhow, ihe smell is starting to dissipate.

  59. Sorryjackchuckiesback Says:

Oh he can throw outside the pocket you say?!? Well he must be the bestest QB EVER!! Well we just gotta keep him then right!!!! 🙄

  60. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

“If I’m Chris Godwin, and the team decides to pay Jameis and not me, I’m holding out.”

Good point, but I think the Bucs should give CG an option.

First, play out his contract and aim to break the bank in 2021.

    2nd, offer him 3 years guaranteed, $5M for 2020, $10M for 2021 and $15M for 2022. Then, a new contract in 2023.

  61. stpetebucsfan Says:

Somebody educate me please. The West Coast Offense is not predicated on a running QB…Ken Anderson…Walsh’s original QB when he invented or pioneered it with the Bengals. Dan Fouts a statue ran this offense.

Unlike many here I do not present myself as a “football expert”. I hope to achieve “informed fan” status. But I think what Joe is confusing here is an RPO offense. Clearly though JW is NOT built to run that offense…he’s no statue but he runs with all the speed of an OT.

Having said that…is it too much to ask for BA to create a NEW offense that is a hybrid of the traditional with the RPO. Just like Wilson, Mahomes, Jackson and the others…get JW outside the pocket but with a clear PLAN as to where he goes with the football…if he runs it should be for the sidelines…he does not have the speed or agility of a Mahomes to run it CONSISTENTLY.

  62. Craig Says:

Jameis simply can’t get the ball out of his hands fast enough to play a west coast offense. Then there is the staring down receivers on the outside.

  63. Clean House Says:

Some of that guy’s comments sound a little threatening and dangerous Joe
I would have it looked into

  64. Redead Says:

    Looks likes Frankenstein running
