With The 18th Pick In The 2020 NFL Draft

December 16th, 2019

“Joe, stop texting me. I’m not trading down to draft a running back and a right tackle.”

The good news is the worst NFL Draft slot the Bucs will have in April is pick No. 20.

The bad news is the Bucs now hold the 18th pick, if the season ended today.

The Eagles, Raiders and Bucs are tied at 7-7, but the Bucs would lose the tiebreaker because of their stronger strength of schedule to date. Dallas (7-7) is considered a playoff team as of today, so they don’t factor in. Playoff teams get the No. 21 through 32 picks.

The Titans (8-6) hold the 19th overall pick, again, if the season ended today.

If the Bucs lose their final two games, there’s a shot they could end up with the No. 10 overall pick, based on Joe’s quick calculations.

But no, no, no, winning these final two games is more important than any of that, per Bruce Arians and many fans.

Joe will just say that winning meaningless games is no guarantee of anything, just like the difference between drafting No. 19 overall and No. 10 overall guarantees nothing.

I dont understand why you would want your favorite team to lose. People cry and complain about the “losing mentality” this team has had, and you write an article about losing on purpose for draft position. That’s a soft mentality. Bruce Arians was brought in here to change the culture. He is doing that. They will not lose “meaningless” games on purpose. IT AINT HAPPENING SO QUIT ASKING.

  2. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Here we go again with “meaningless” games……I would think it is at least meaningful for the Texans…..probably meaningful to every single Buc player and coach…..
One way to stop the losing culture is to quit referring to games as meaningless.
Sure, the 10th pick is better than the 20th…..but the draft position is the consolation prize for losers. Count TBBF out!!!

  3. Mark Watson Says:

So best case we get 18, worst case 20? Not much difference in either position. I say the team should continue to play out of there mind to continue the Dungy-esque momentum shift for next year. Love where things are heading. Hate that Jameis nearly singlehandedly knocked me out of my fantasy playoffs. But if anyone was to do it, glad it was Jameis.

  4. Bobby Says:

I agree! I want to win every game regardless. We need to change the culture and besides, it’s not meaningless. It will mean something to the players, coaches and fans.

  5. Go Bucs 72 Says:

I don’t pay for my season tickets to watch losses and Licht is doing the picking anyway, so no thanks. “Meaningless,” is an opinion, not a fact.

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    It’s also meaningful to Vegas……

  7. Sport Says:

Shill Joe – haven’t you learned your lesson yet. (Who am I kidding, you are as stubborn as a mule, see continued love for Manziel). Every year you pine for a pick that is out of reach. We should just lose every game every year to satisfy your obsession (not to mention your other obsession of pining for every high priced free agent).

How’s that draft status the Patriots have every year worked out?

I couldn’t care less about draft position. You know why? Because we have solid coaching. AND we have a ton of young players (Band of Brothers) including a 25 year old QB that will benefit from winning waaaay more than losing for a slightly better draft slot.

You not recognizing that is trolling at best, ignorance at worst.

    In BA I Trust!

  8. Dewey Selmon Says:

3 years ago OJ Howard fell to us at 19.

  9. Easy Says:

    TRENCHES!!!!

  10. Red Skeleton Says:

Wanting to tank the season is:
    “WHAT LOSERS SAY for $5000.00”
Focusing on getting a better draft pick over winning out is part of the LOSING culture Bucco Bruce has to shed from the locker room.

  11. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

3 years ago Licht passed on Dalvin Cook at 19

  12. Sarasota Garey Says:

O line, or best available player

  13. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

Glad Arians is more competitive than Clueless Joe

Draft picks don’t matter when your GM sucks

Winning is what paying fans want not draft picks who might be a bust or might be great

Remember readers the media gets into the games for free, us paying customers want wins. We aren’t complaining about beat salads and free food in the press box, Clueless Joe is out of touch with the die hards

  14. Brandon Says:

And Dalvin Cook has exactly ONE 1000 yard season in three years and he’s injured again. Quit with the Dalvin Cook whining. He’s always hurt. That’s why all 32 teams passed on him including the Vikings. Howard will prove to be the better player over time than an injury prone RB that is already closer to the end of his career than end.

  15. Sport Says:

Dusty – Cook has great ability, unfortunately availability isn’t one of them (he is often injured and plays for another team).

Root for the Bucs and stop whining. That goes for you incessant D James whiners as well.

    In BA I Trust!

  16. Marine Buc Says:

#1 need is tackle. #2 need is running back. #3 need is defensive tackle.

  17. Cobraboy Says:

Once you get out of the Top 10 picks, the draft becomes for need rather than Best Player Available.

So what is the need on this team? My $$$ is on OL/DL.

  18. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

    @dusthty

Cook missed 17 of his first 32 games with injuries and is hurt again…

    Try again

  19. Alanbucsfan Says:

Playing for draft position- what does that mean?

That’s like trying to get fired on purpose so you can collect unemployment while you look for your next job.

    Isn’t that what losers do?

  20. Pryda...Sec147 Says:

we need every win we can get!!! Sick and tired of losing

  21. m0j0 Says:

I definitely want to see the Bucs do their best to win the final two games of the season. That would be more valuable in terms of getting the team to buy in to the program, free agency interest, etc.

  22. SB Says:

The Bucs Defense got me 17 Points Yesterday. Not too often can one say that!

  23. 813bucboi Says:

@18 DT-kinlaw or a solid day1 starter at OT will be there for the taking….

    GO BUCS!!!!

  24. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Bucs passing on good NFL RBs is why this team is below average to average. Kelce the best TE in the NFL was a 2nd day selection as whats Kittle; point is you can find these dudes later on that are studs, well good competent NFL GMs can find these guys, not the dunce here running the draft

  25. danr Says:

my argument is, if evans godwin and donavan smith are all out,

Jameis should be too. Not a fair evaluation opportunity for him, and can only injure himself, or (further?) sour a fan base on him.

If godwin evans or donavan smith can play, (any one of the three) then jameis should play.

  26. Buc1987 Says:

“Joe will just say that winning meaningless games is no guarantee of anything”

It puts a BIG smile on my face Joe.

    It guarantees that.

  27. Colonel_MP Says:

You achieve a record that puts Boynton a perfect spot to get exactly what you need. This looks like an ideal spot for a top OL in the draft.

  28. Colonel_MP Says:

    Damn auto correct…

  29. Mort Says:

Changing a losing mentality and culture certainly isn’t meaningless. Pick wherever. Good teams find a way to win picking late teens to twenties. Let’s be a good team for a change.

  30. JustBucNwin Says:

OL has to be the pick here!! Double down on the trenches…after that BPA!

  31. orlbucfan Says:

Who cares? I want a 9-7 record. Besides, there are quite a few unpolished gems in the later draft rounds.

  32. TexBuc Says:

I want end the season on a 6 game winning streak.

  33. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

    Let’s go, 9 dash 7.

Luckily, there are two very good OT’s at Alabama. Either one will suffice for the next decade.

  34. ElioT Says:

Losing “meaningless” games is a complete loser mentality.

If you think that way you are a… loser!

You don’t establish winning culture by losing games..

Every single snap is important and winning games is what leads to the elusive “culture change”.

I’ll take wins over any draft pick.

The only exception is the last game of the season where they clearly gave up to get the #1 overall.

  35. Conte Piscateli Says:

Playing for draft position is the exact “loser” mentality we are trying to get rid of on this team. I’ll take 9-7 knowing especially if we win out without our two stud WRs.

  36. Kansas95Buc Says:

Again, TANKING is a LOSER mentality. We’ve had how many top draft picks and how did that work for us so far?

  37. mark2001 Says:

If Taylor is there, you take him. He is the best back in a decade to play the college game, and has the hands, vision, patients, power and speed to be a great back at the next level.

For all you crying about the poor running game, you draft him, no excuses.

  38. mark2001 Says:

D… Cook is OK…but always hurt. We need a back like Taylor.

  39. mark2001 Says:

D… you think Cook would have been healthier than he has been with the Vikes, with our great blocking O line?

  40. Pierce Says:

Beating the Texans would be a huge confidence boost for this team!

  41. Tbbucs3 Says:

    A swing and a miss!

  42. jerseybuc Says:

Stop with the lose on purpose so you move up in the draft. Did you ever strap on a jock Joe? Or Joe’s? Play to win!!!

Go look up players taken at 10 and 18 the past ten years. It is still a crap shoot. The key to the draft is what you do with the second thru fifth or sixth round IMO. You win, you energize your weak fanbase, you attract free agents who see a team on the rise, and lastly? When you win out it means that the current players are playing well. All bode well for the future. Very weak Joe, Just win baby!

  43. Rod Munch Says:

The Raiders are 6-8, not 7-7.

  44. kyle Says:

haha, Great sub text in the picture, always love your cleverness joe! We should by all means trade down and draft a tackle and rb..haha. its jason lichts team…

  45. stpetebucsfan Says:

The break is at “roughly” the top five. The top five picks average a 75% success rate against just 50% for the rest of the first round.

The difference in actual statistical success in picking 6th or 16th or 26th is negligible.

I know that sounds counterintuitive because as humans we like to believe that we…or at least some uber smart GM…can use their “brain” and “football savvy” and find the best players. It just ain’t so.

And this is not just true in the statistical outcomes but in individual skill sets. Research shows that the “great” GM’s generally have a run and then come back to earth.

Nobody beats the draft odds for very long.

  46. Nptbuc Says:

Godwin, Third Round, pick number 84! Jesus guys! Just stop with the playing for the draft crap. Just keep playing to win. I rest my case.

  47. Buczilla Says:

Lol, Licht would be smart to trade back and take the rb and rt like you mentioned Joe. Don’t hold your breath.

  48. MadMax Says:

“Joe, stop texting me. I’m not trading down to draft a running back and a right tackle.” …hahahaha, thats golden!!!

    Delpit in the 1st

If we bring Suh back, (I really want Marvin Wilson, but have to pass), then Becton for RT and trade back into the 2nd for RB Zakk Moss.

4th or 5th we get a Center since Jensen just isnt affordable…Darryl Williams, Miss St.

  49. SB Says:

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

  50. SOEbuc Says:

Grant Delpit (LSU) in the first. Trade back into the second for Chubba Hubbard (OSU) and stack the lines with everything left.

  51. MadMax Says:

Im really loving Jedrick Wills for RT and Biadasz for C…..if we can land one of them after Delpit….man that would be sweet….Jedrick looks like a mad man, we need that addition to the O line.

  52. Gaston Spires Says:

what is the possible 20 th pick?

  53. Matt Says:

Yeah if Delprit falls to us then we have to take him, after that Yes a center, Tackle (RT or LT) and we are GTG!!! I wouldn’t be mad if we spent our next 3 1st Round picks on the offensive line. Rojo has been 1 block away many times on breaking off big chunk plays and had several called back due to penalties. What we really need is a speed demon to catch balls out of the backfield. Every year there is a late round 4.3-4.4 guy who gets overlooked and we’re due to hit on one. Jeremy McNichols?? Why????

  54. Youngbucs Says:

Every game is meaningful IMO and besides wouldn’t you want to see Jameis , who gets trashed by media and fans no matter how he wins or loses. Take the field with out his best weapons and left tackle a tweeked thumb on a shorter week to prepare , beat a above average team at home (where we lose most games) and end the season strong? WTF is wrong with that? Confidence building is not meaningless winning in Tampa my friends.
