“Underrated”

December 27th, 2019

Gets props.

Man, nothing gets Joe stoked in the morning quite like a clip of good downfield blocking.

Well, almost nothing. Joe’s daily mug of Community Coffee Morning Blend gets the job done and Joe won’t go into detail about his lifesize poster of Rachel Watson on the wall of JoeBucsFan.com world headquarters.

A guy by the name of Brandon Thorn, who works for The Athletic and was once a college scout, seems to enjoy breaking down tape of offensive lines if you look at his Twitter feed.’

Thorn demonstrated with video how physical Bucs left guard Ali Marpet and Bucs center Ryan Jensen are.

In Ronald Jones’ 49-yard run last week, Marpet helped spring him with a strong downfield block. It allowed Jones to cut in and gain significant yardage.

There are other clips of offensive line porn from the Bucs on Thorn’s timeline from last week’s game, including Jensen beating up a defender some 15 yards downfield and Donovan Smith snowplowing a defensive lineman for a touchdown.

As you will hear on the next installment of the “Ira Kaufman Podcast,” it is obvious Bucs coaches are developing NFL players.

OMG on the carry by Barber how do you not put your foot in the ground and break that off Donovan’s backside? That hole was HUGE once he sealed his man outside. That, THAT is one of the reasons our running game sucks! WOW

  2. Sport Says:

Online is doing some good things. I’ve always heard it takes a few years for a line to gel. Solidify a new RT and keep building depth. We will need it for a playoff push next year!

    In BA I Trust!

  3. ColonelAngus Says:

Yeah, that second run had big play written all over it. Channel your inner Barry Sanders, stop, jump cut and take that thing around the corner with #3 as your lead blocker and that’s a big play. Our backs are good at getting the bare minimum on any given play.

  4. Steven007 Says:

But but wait, Trollmax said he was nothing but a backup?!

  5. David Says:

They definitely need another O lineman but mostly they need a RB. I started getting optimistic with Ronald Jones but he doesn’t have great vision. Barber is a Just a good change of pace guy.
Better running back, running game, would knock off about six or seven interceptions

  6. Bucsfanman Says:

RB’s lack of vision has been a big reason for our struggles.

  7. Bucnjim5656 Says:

Offensive line playing well check….Defense playing well check…You really have to admit progress is being made and we are at least going in the right direction. I’d like to see them finish strong against the Falcons and end our losing season streak. That Giants game will haunt me all off season though.

  8. Hodad Says:

I guess if they blocked like that all year at least one of them would of made the pro bowl. Marpet might be under rated around the league, but he’s over rated by Buc fans. How many years now for Marpet without a pro bowl? Don’t use the excuse he plays on a losing team, it never stopped Joe Thomas.

RB’s lack of vision has been a big reason for our struggles.

    BINGO!!!!!!!!

offensively, we’re a RB and RT away from being elite……

we need to draft a RT high that CAN run block and draft a OT/G in the mid to late rounds…..draft and sign a RB….

    GO BUCS!!!!

  10. 813bucboi Says:

our OL plays too inconsistent to put anyone in the PB…..

one play or game they block like this….on the next we could find jensen getting beat, marpet getting pushed back and d.smith whiffing…..

cappa was the most consistent imo…..he deserves to be the most improved player on the team…..from project to solid starter…..cappa may make the PB before marpet…..

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  11. Isaac haggins Says:

Jensen was getting hiss ass whipped allot !!!

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I agree…..our Oline is totally inconsistent……and usually loses the run-blocking battle….Marpet looks great because the others are mediocre.

  13. tnew Says:

Watch the backside on the second run.. there, Felecia is the problem..

  14. BigMacAttack Says:

Barber is not very good, and that’s being kind.

  15. Brandon Says:

Lemme preface this by saying that I’ve always been a Femar Dotson fan… but in both of these runs, he utterly failed in his reach block to keep his man from sliding down the line and making the play or almost making the play.

  16. Craig Says:

Demar and Donovan are too stationary on run plays. That means we need to have Marpet and Cappa do some pulls and counters to open holes for the run. It took 15 games for Marpet to get into the linebackers, but it was a start.

Not sure Jensen is worth the money.

  17. Adrnagy Says:

Players take chances if the play is not there. Barber is one of those that follows direction no matter what. I bet Bruce tells him jump from a roof of house barber will do it.

  18. Adrnagy Says:

The weakest link in the run game is Dotson and rb. Look at both plays. First one the defense almost got to rojo. The second one Dotson is too slow good play from defender knowing same play. But Dotson is slow in the run game at least when has to move around.

  19. Tampabuscsbro Says:

soooooooo you know Joe Thomas is a first ballot HoFer he was that good. I don’t know why everyone is in here complaining about the line we need some better blocking schemes. but overall even the harshest critics of the line like beckles think the line is good.

  20. Sorryjackchuckiesback Says:

And who was it again who signed these guys? One from a school nobody ever heard of!?! The other guy Jensen everyone said he only had one to year and blah blah blah….. Nobody can fault Licht!! Winston, after all was said and done this year, cost this team games that were instrumental in improving confidence moving forward!! The 49rs game he ends it with a pick 6 … I’m not going to go through all the games he threw away this year! We all know… You can’t have that when you are trying to build a defense!! You needed a QB this year that was safe and didn’t put this young defense in so many bad positions!! And that didn’t happen…….

  21. lowercaseg Says:

I’d be okay to re-signing Dotson IF we draft a OT early.

  22. Alanbucsfan Says:

Demar Dotson can’t run block, period.
Bucs need a RUN BLOCKING RT and then you will see running game take off.

  23. unbelievable Says:

LOL, love that 2nd clip cuz you can see all of Marpet’s excellent blocking go to complete waste due to D. Smith letting his man get right through and tackle our RB.

  24. LJS4th Says:

Take two tackles in this draft and a solid running back also another OLB to rush the passer and the Bucs will improve.
