“This Is A $100 Million Quarterback”

December 20th, 2019

Analyst wants Jameis paid.

Former Packers wide receiver James Jones knows what it is like to play with a guy who can throw a boatload of touchdowns and a fair amount of picks.

So the current NFL Network analyst doesn’t break out into hives over interceptions. With that history and first-hand knowledge of playing with Brett Favre, Jones believes Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, is slandered by all the folks who freak out about Jameis’ picks.

As a result, Jones took to “Total Access,” seen weeknights on NFL Network, and lobbied for Jameis to get paid.

In breaking down the Bucs’ game Saturday against the Texans, which will be broadcast to the world on NFL Network, Jones believes Jameis should be paid a nine-figure contract by Team Glazer when his 2019 contract expires.

Especially, Jones said, if Jameis wins his duel tomorrow with Deshaun Watson.

“I like Tampa’s chances here strictly because of this kid here,” Jones said pointing to a graphic of Jameis. “Jameis Winston has been playing lights out.

“The impressive thing about it is, what $100 million quarterbacks do, which I believe Jameis Winston is, is he throws his receivers open no matter which receivers are out there. And I love the challenge he is getting this week. You are without [Chris] Godwin. You are without [Mike] Evans. So this is the time you show the franchise that ‘I can win ballgames for you with whoever you put out there.’ That is the sign of a great quarterback.

“I understand he turns the ball over every now and then but Jameis has been playing football. People want to talk about all the turnovers and they don’t want to talk about all the good things he is doing. This is a $100 million quarterback. … You have a chance to prove why you need to be paid.”

If Jameis can pull off an upset, or at least put up points to give the Texans, fighting for an AFC South crown as it is, a contest, then it is all complete. It will virtually lock down a new contract with the Bucs for Jameis.

And Joe knows this will ruin quite a few Bucs’ fans holiday season because they want Jameis to be run out of town so badly.

You can watch and hear Jones’ breakdown here at the 19:28 mark.

$100 Million sounds good. 4 years with 2 guaranteed.

  2. pick6 Says:

if they don’t lock him up this offseason he will cost them millions more after next season. what he and the bucs have done in the Red Zone is just amazing consider how much Koetter’s Krewe struggled down there with the same personnel. Winston’s biggest negative – the turnovers – will be slightly less of a negative next year. The reality is Winston doesn’t have bad seasons he just has terrible games now and again that he needs to clean up….11 of his picks came in just 3 games, and the bucs won 1 and were closer than they had any right to be in the other 2 (Panthers in London & 49ers)

  3. JJ Says:

He is like an ex girlfriend. He’ll never get you a ring. But if the owners are lazy as they appear to be.. they will be content with occasional flashes of greatness and a playoff berth here and there with a divisional round exit then yeah, he will get paid. Reminds me of Stafford. Franchise him and beef up that line. Evans is a Hall of Famer and Godwin will be if he continues to play how he’s playing now for 5-6 more years.

  4. JJ Says:

Do Bucs want to just win some or do they want Super Bowls? In playoffs the way offense scores at will…a pick will screw em. Jameis make sure those mind boggling picks on occasion.

  5. JimmyJack Says:

Yes, yes, yes!!! Guarantee this kid 100M for the next 4 years and tack on 2-3 option years.

Then when the price for starting QB skyrockets next year we can all bask in the brilliance that is Jason Licht.

Our franchise will be ready to rock and roll once we also resign JPP, Barrett & Suh.

We will be playoff bound and Winston will lead the way. Get on the bandwagon now while the gettins good!!

    GO BUCS!

  6. SmoothBayRider Says:

@Pick6 They can franchise tag him this year at $27M . If they still want him around for another season , they could franchise tag him again in 2021 for around $33M . Just before this good four game stretch he’s had , he had a five game stretch where he threw 13 int. This franchise can’t afford to let a 4 game stretch dictate the next 4 years .

  7. alaskabuc Says:

I’ve been about as tired of Jameis’ picks and perceived decision making as anyone, but I’m putting it out there now, I’m a convert. “F” the picks, Jameis is a baller and is far and away the best option we have for the foreseeable future. Get the man a running game and let’s go!

  8. JimmyJack Says:

JJ……What exactly are you on over there? You let me know which Championship team Winston let down please? Please let me know. I beg ya.

  9. westernbuc Says:

I don’t understand where this idea that Koetter had the same team comes from. Last I checked, Koetter never had the NFL leading sack artist on his team, and he had at least two tumors on the field. DJax and Swaggy Baker. DJax could’ve been traded too lol

  10. SB Says:

Anyone that has been here long enough knows that I may be the Only Gators fan that was good with the JW pick on this site. I have supported him all along. I was Very Skeptical earlier this yr and was about ready to give up. However what he pulled off last week without his #1 and #2 was Phenomenal! If he can do it again this week against a playoff team then I am Completely Sold! That would be “Sign Him Now!” time!

  11. JimmyJack Says:

Western……..Jackson was assuredly hand picked by Dirk. Heck the guy openly babied him and made him a Captain.

Baker was the exact mold DT Smitty needed to run his Tampa 2. Quick and soft gap penetrater………Credit Bowles everything for fixing that line. He brought in strong physical enforcers who attack the OL instead of trying to run around them. His defense has put Shaq in position to succeed.

The verdict of talent vs coaching is in. It was always coaching. Talent was never the issue. Tomorrows game will be further proof.

  12. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Jameis is the perfect type of QB for this offense. He is a down field passer with a strong arm who can fit in some crazy passes (also can hurt him),
If you take Lamar and put him on this team and with this scheme and he’d be trash.
More familiarity will lead to better decisions, that should be all too obvious. This is Jameis’ first year in this scheme and he is breaking NFL/franchise records and did better than he did in year 4 of his last scheme.
Jameis will be the first Bucs QB to get a second contract and if this young defense can keep it up or get a little better then the sky is the limit.

  13. ManzielMadness Says:

Sign him… give him a RT and a decent RB and this offense will explode even more. For the FSU fans out there… is there any chance Cam Akers falls to the 3rd round? Pretty sure he’s used to running behind a sh!t OLine… wouldn’t mind adding him to our backfield.

  14. ben Says:

A lot of buc fans think that when Winston plays a good team with a defense those pics will be a wash but.. i don’t think Winton will ever win the team or a super bowl. Take away the great receivers on the team and Winston would stay way below average .. ok. so many fans give him a pass so I must be blind or need rose colored glasses..

  15. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

2019 revealed the true answer to the sheep…Realist has no freakin clue what he’s talking about.

  16. buc15 Says:

Alaskian as long as we keep winning, we will never have to hear from Realist or TMAX ever again.

  17. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

If Perriman balls out again tomorrow that means next year we will quite possibly have the best receiver core in the league. This offense will be even more fun to watch. I’m sure if he gets paid in full he’ll be having done fun throwing it to them.

  18. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Anybody going to record or and put it on Youtube? Won’t be able to watch it.

  19. TiredBucsFan Says:

I loved him when we picked him in the draft, learned to hate him, but I think I am converted back again Sign this guy to 5 years and lets take a ride. But please get the D back and draft a RB and some o line.

  20. TiredBucsFan Says:

Akers would be a great fit.

  21. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Ben…so without Evans and without Miller and Godwin much of the last game, he still puts up 450+, so that’s below average?
You ARE blind and you’ve always been on this subject, but fear not, it’s never too late to see the light.
“If you make a mistake and do not correct it, this is called a mistake”

You forget when Jameis came in this League he ME13 but then who? Banged up VJax, Rookie Hump, Shep, and Brate. Dude was still setting records with nobodies.

Jameis got Shep, Brate, and Hump paid!!!

  22. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Nationally broadcasted game you say?

    Oh yeah…… JayMiss got this.

    Ha ha ha ha ha

  23. Craig Says:

Y’all must be watching different games than I am. The Jameis I have been seeing isn’t worth that much. %0 mil guaranteed on a 4 year contract, two of those years guaranteed. Load on the incentives and make him work for it.

I still see too many missed receivers, inaccurate deep balls and badly placed balls that Evans, Godwin and Perriman have to put their hearts on the line to catch.

I wish the guy luck but haven’t seen enough yet. Two more games this year, let’s wait.

  24. Cgmaster27 Says:

@alaskan dont mind ben, hes still upset his boy mariota be warming that pine for ryan these days.

  25. TexBuc Says:

Some are going crazy with the idea Winston will be offered a new contract.

  26. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Craig do you watch any other games?
I see every QB doing all of those things. Jameis has the most 20+ yard passes and is second with 40+ yard passes. Doesn’t seem to have a deep passing problem to me.
Every QB misses WRs and have inaccurate passes sometimes but Jameis also throws passes that are equally as amazing.

  27. Fire the fans Says:

Inaccurate deep balls?! If you’re just going to regurgitate nonsense you might wanna check and make sure that your statement hasn’t already been put to rest. He’s one of the best deep ball throwers in the league..

  28. Allbuccedup Says:

Franchise him, draft a qb in second round go from there.

  29. Defense Rules Says:

Those who think they can sign Jameis for $25 mil a year are delusional. His agent has already convinced him that there will be plenty of suitors in the free market, and that’s why they supposedly set their number so high. Bucs will have to play the franchise Jameis card if they expect to keep him. And they will, in 2020 & 2021 if need be. After that, BA probably doesn’t care.

  30. Pickgrin Says:

“This Is A $100 Million Quarterback”

Probably more like $140-150M if the Bucs are looking to sign Winston to a 5 year contract as they should be. And in 2 or 3 years – that $28-30M per will likely be a bargain as other “Franchise QBs” are signing $35M+ contracts.

Rams are already into Goff for at least the next 3 years at an average of $33.5M per. I’d take Winston over Goff any day of the week. Same with Wentz at $32M per average and same with Dak at whatever $30+M amount he winds up getting.

Bucs have a right to bargain hard at $30M or less vs those “comparables” – because there’s no way “points” for “turnovers” shouldn’t be deducted from Winston’s otherwise stellar play and #s this year – when it comes to contract negotiations.

Sure quite a few weren’t his “fault” – but 25 Interceptions is completely unacceptable and he’s had 15+ every other full season he’s played in this league. So yea – that’s a negotiating factor. Or at least it better be.

I’d be content seeing a $28M per year average deal on a 5 year contract for Winston as a base – with incentives up to $4 or $5M each year on top. Now If only those incentives could become null and void at the 15 Interceptions mark – that would be a creative contract clause we’d ALL like to see…. LOL

  31. Stanglassman Says:

I concur Pickgrin. You always write what I’m thinking and about to write but more clearly.

Alaskian as long as we keep winning, we will never have to hear from Realist or TMAX ever again.

I don’t mind Realist so much except for the !!!!!!!!!!s. However, if T m ax were to disappear I would throw a party. lol

  33. Stevebobucsfan Says:

For as many picks as Jameis has thrown, the Bucs are still 7 and 7 and could have been 9 & 7 if not for a few missed field goals. Also he’s in the top 5 or 10 with yards , touchdowns and red zone scoring. So I am hoping the Glazers at least franchise him. We all know Jameis was a bit immature when he first came to the Bucs I would like to see what he does with another year under Arians

  34. BucEmUp Says:

Jameis will win a ring with a team who us good around him.Thats starting to show now.Pay the man or he will win one somewhere else

  35. Bucy Says:

I think instead of fair amount you ment leagues most.

  36. Adrnagy Says:

Best input I’ve heard from a analyst. Or former player on jameis play. Yes everyone talks the turnover but no one talks all the positives. Problably because “humans “look at the negative first.

Maybe the only case not to pay jameis 100M is playoff appearance. But imo jameis has out perform Stafford , Goff, cousins ,dalton , Flacco. So yes pay 100M.

  37. Adrnagy Says:

If we win tomorrow. WOW ! It will be imo difficult just because the chemistry on offense with man up. But let’s see. I do think we win. Defense will step up.

  38. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Interesting.

Matt Gay is the 6th best Field Goal kicker in the nfl

  39. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Even if we don’t win tomorrow…and win our last game…it’s all good still. 8-8.

But I prefer a win tomorrow. National TV. I hope we stomp the other team…that will get us noticed.

  40. 813bucboi Says:

JW ain’t been to the playoffs….can’t compare him to Goff Watson Dak Wentz…those QBs have more leverage….

    25mil per he what he’ll get….

I’m sure he watched Melvin Gordon and his agent fumble his contract situation

    GO BUCS

  41. Hank Rearden Says:

Jaboo with the “GLOVE” (and quality coaching he’s never had before) will take the Bucs to another level. The best part will be the realist and other trolls being buried for the next decade!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the sheep will eat the REAL fans blah blah blah in 2020!!!!!?????????????

    and as always…GO BUCS!?

  42. ptrain07 Says:

I think we should transition tag Winston this offseason and match and reasonable offer.

  43. Wesley Says:

    Just stop Joe.

  44. Ocala Says:

    He’s right

  45. GrafikDetail.com Says:

Jones has been saying Winston should & will get paid all season

  46. GrafikDetail.com Says:

@Joe the link has been removed by youtube but i found another one with the clip https://youtu.be/zT6RkvBb5Co?t=1166

  47. T REX Says:

Turnovers every now and then? LOL. Come on…what trash article is this?

  48. Joe Says:

    GrafikDetail:

    Thanks.

  49. Buczilla Says:

He’s earned the right to come back for a year on the franchise tag or a cheap, short term deal. 100 million is laughable since this dude has burned us far too many times in the past. If he kills it next year then pay him market value.

  50. BrianBucs Says:

    100 Million for Winston?

    Is this April 1st?

  51. BucDan Says:

lol at the double franchise tag being suggested.

$27m (yr 1) + $33mm (yr 2) = $60m over two years, or avg. of $30m per year. Well, golly! I thought that he wasn’t worth that much!?

Might as well sign a four year contract with $60m guaranteed. But it’s not going to happen!

    The deal will be BIGGER.

There are only 32 QB starters in the league. The salary cap is about to be $200m. Players will get paid regardless and the deal signed today is cheaper than the deal signed tomorrow for any player that is progressing and considered a starter. That’s how the cap and free agency work.

  52. mark2001 Says:

Every Buc fan wants the team to win Sat. And every Bucs fan wants every player to play well enough to make that happen. And Jameis, that doesn’t mean you have to make every play count with six points to do that. What I want to see from Jameis is smart play…find the open receiver, look him off, and deliver the ball on target. To not fumble or put the D in the hole by trying to do too much. And get rid of the ball or throw it away in a timely manner if the pressure is too great or no man is open.

That would be a good game for Jameis, win or lose (hopefully the former though). No more Bucs beating Bucs, or Jameis beating the Bucs. Those days have to be coming to an end.

  53. runnerdoc Says:

H8ers won’t be negotiating with Jameis.

It won’t be a franchise tag. And it will be far north of 25 million.

  54. TDTB Says:

Not a believer yet, but the needle has moved. Today is a big test. Texans are fighting for a spot in the playoffs so they won’t rollover. VHIII has given intel to offense. Jameis will have to do things without best receivers.

  55. Chesapeake Bucco Says:

Don’t expect too much today. Banged up team vs team w/playoffs in its sights….Bucs will have a hard time keeping up. If they win it would be monumental.

  56. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Must suck to be a hater and read all of these articles, expert predictions, and posts. After every game lost they would blame it all on Winston and declare he was going to be gone as soon as the season ended. They hate him so much they can’t stand that we have won 5 of our last 6 games. Think about that! They have suffered through decades of bad football and when the team finally shows some life they cant enjoy it. When the team has an offense that is incredibly entertaining they can’t enjoy it. The team is throwing the ball over the field and scoring tons of TDs and they can’t enjoy it. I will be at RayJay today and I think they should have a moment of silence for all these losers and then give them a lifetime ban from the stadium.

  57. ocala Says:

    Well said TouchDownTampaBay

  58. Jonzey Says:

JW is a top Quarterback in the league he has thrown for 4,000 every season and he on track to throw for 5,000 this one. Those are pro bowl stats. We need a running game bad Jones is not it grab a top running a kiss in the second get a top O line in the first. Sign JW please don’t let him go

  59. Jonzey Says:

    Top running back

  60. orlbucfan Says:

I felt Bucs would win the last 6 games. So far, 4W with 2 more both at home. Weather will be righteous today for football. Even being bitten by Buc Luck, they can win this one. Go Bucs!!
