“He Turns The Ball Over”

December 18th, 2019

Talkin’ Jameis.

Last week in a conference call with the Tampa Bay pen and mic club, Joe asked Lions coach Matt Patricia what Joe thought to be a fair question.

Joe wasn’t trying to bait Patricia or make him look bad. It was an honest — or so Joe thought — football question. It had to do with Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.

The question was, do defenses prepare for the Bucs knowing Jameis will throw a pick and is it the team’s job to take advantage of that and score with that gift possession?

Patricia paused and then gave Joe a politically correct answer.

Well, former Bucs cornerback Vernon Hargreaves wasn’t as PC as Patricia.

Yesterday, one of the best NFL reporters out there, Aaron Wilson who covers the Texans, asked Hargreaves about the Bucs and specifically Jameis. Hargreaves, who was released by the Bucs five weeks ago, offered up a thorough answer about his former teammate.

“He can light it up,” Hargreaves said of Jameis. “He can light it up. I’ve always known that playing with him. He’s dynamic. He can throw the ball — he’s going to throw the ball all over the field.

“We have to do a good job in the secondary to slow him down. He turns the ball over. That’s no secret so hopefully we can get some hands on some balls.”

Every once in a while if you watch the Bucs bench, you will see interesting reactions when Jameis throws his picks.

But you know what? Winning is the greatest perfume. And it doesn’t hurt to curb the stench when you throw for 450 yards four touchdowns.

You just can’t get away with it against top notch defenses or against teams who are scoring juggernauts themselves. The takeaway battle more times than not decide games. If we’re to take that next step forward Jameis has to stop turning the ball over so frequently otherwise we’ll continue to lose against quality teams.
I guarantee at the start of next season BA won’t be telling Jameis to just keep firing it if the results add up to more turnovers. Right now it doesn’t matter because there’s really nothing at stake but pride. But next season BA won’t be as tolerable.

  2. Clean House Says:

Will be fun to watch Vernon vs. the Bucs
I’d be equally entertained if the Bucs light him up badly
or if he somehow has a couple of pic 6’s
Will he wear his Tampa draft combine cleats?

  3. Rod Munch Says:

Nothing wrong with what he said. Favre turned it over too, everyone knew that. You hoped those would offset all the points he’d put up.

  4. SteelStudBuc Says:

Jameis has been the same lately… just lucky that’s all

  5. Joe in Michigan Says:

On the flip side of this, VH3 has 2 interceptions in 4 years (39 games). He doesn’t get a lot of turnovers.

  6. DayOnePaul Says:

Vernon, shut the f#ck up. Worry about your slack ass career. You just got fired three weeks ago! And let’s stop sticking a microphone in this clown’s grill like he’s some kind of an authority on anything, until he shows he can cover somebody. Jameis and his merry band of third string wide receivers are gonna target and torch this pretender every chance O’Brien trots him out there.
    Geeeze.
    What an idiot.

the problem with hargrievences…if you listen carefully, he said:

    “it’s just football”

to make it big in the nfl, “football has to be everything”…

the kid always just had the wrong mindset…and it was infecting the db room…

    he looks different already tho…

like he’s morphed into some other creature already…

he doesn’t look like a cackling bird anymore with a fluffed up hairdo either…

I say Vernon gives up 2 TDs.

    He sucked when drafted.

    Sucked while a Buc.

    Still sucks.

  14. Tackleblockwin Says:

I have always had the impression that VH3 was/is an underachiever. Not saying he could be a top CB in the league. However, if he really worked hard he could be a solid CB. Maybe his head/heart are not fully into football. But what do I know, just a guess.

  15. BoltIsle Says:

I’d prefer to see a player benched for trying too hard and rather than benched for quitting and/or a lack of effort. Hard working was never a label attached to Vernon.

  16. Brandon Says:

Exactly how Dungy’s Bucs would describe Favre. They would say that he would give teams a couple opportunities (especially early) during the game and they would have to make the most of them.

  17. Brandon Says:

VH3 is exhibit A of why Buc fans that are also fans of Florida college football are terribly biased. VH3 was good in college. Then he went to Combine and proved what we already knew. He was short and slow. But his fans didn’t care saying he was still a great player. Sorry. A great small slow guy shouldn’t leave the draft board until round 3, especially at CB. Our top 3 CBs are all big and SMB and JD are exceptionally fast.

  18. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

I wonder if he still laughs like a gremlin if he even thinks he is in the vicinity of a play.

  19. Bucsfanman Says:

    Great statement Jean!
As to Finger-wave Hargreaves, hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! Mr. Ne-ne himself talking turnovers?!! Boy is that rich!!!!

Best roster move Licht has made since he’s been here!

  24. TheRamdog Says:

I have to agree with BA these defensive backs need to learn to catch for real a lot of these games would be blowouts of they could pick off a few additional passes each game. It is football 101 first thing you do is stop the run, then you force them to pass and the more times a QB airs it out the more chance something bad good happen. Monte Kiffin used to say the easiest thing for the QB is to turn around and hand it off.

  25. Pancake block Says:

Imagine this offense with a competant running back to keep defenses honest.

  27. ocala Says:

I watched the Patriots loose to the Texans a few weeks ago. The Texans secondary played great with the exception of one player…..

  28. ocala Says:

A lot of Bucs fans deserve Jamies going to another NFL team.

If Jamies were to hit free agency he would have a legitimate shot at being the top paid player in the NFL.

  29. Buc believer Says:

He does something you NEVER did with the Bucs Vernon….. play with HEART and PASSION!!!!

  30. MTM Says:

VH3 was very good in college but lacked the ability to adjust at the next level. Maybe he works out in Texas. VH3 did light up Winston in college picking off 3 passes in one game and dropping 2 other potential picks.

  31. Ken G Says:

Since Vinny set the modern NFL interception mark of 35 in 1987, interceptions have generally declined even as yardage totals have inflated. In the last decade, only Eli Manning (2010, 2013) has thrown more interceptions in a season than Winston (24) has in 14 games in 2019. We are approaching rarefied air here: The post-Vinny record in a season is Farve’s 29 in 2005. Throw in the fumbles and this season is one for the modern record books from a turnover perspective.

I laugh at the idea of Winston being top paid QB, but I suppose it only takes one team dumb enough to pay for a guy padding his yardage stats to create a contract year narrative all while treating the football without regard to who ends up with it.

The biggest play he’s made in his entire career occurs this year and they occurred in one loss and one win.

Except for homers that still care about FSU vs Florida matchups, this is largely irrelevant. Just some average corner on another team now.
