Lots Of Points, No YAC

November 8th, 2019

No. 13 in NFL in YAC.

Feel free to make your own conclusions but Joe just thought this was a bit odd.

One element of the Bucs’ offense that has carried over from last year — same s(p)it; different coaches — is the lousy YAC from receivers.

For those not familiar, YAC = yards after catch.

Per the good people of NFL Films, compiling stats for BSPN’s NFL Matchup, the Bucs have the worst percentage of YAC yards from total receiving yards.

The Bucs are No. 9 in receiving yards at 2,409 and only 37 percent comes from YAC.

So what does this tell Joe? It suggests the Bucs are throwing a lot of passes along the sideline and in the end zone. Jameis Winston ranks tied for fifth in the NFL in passing touchdowns.

Chris Godwin leads the Bucs in YAC with 288, currently No. 13 in the NFL.

Now imagine if we had a “real” Franchise QB?

The Bucs offense would be amazing???

Anybody seen any tight ends in the building lately cause I haven’t seen them since the Ryan Griffin and Tanner Hudson connection in preseason?????

  2. JP_09 Says:

It’s called ball placement. Not all of this falls on Winston though, Evans isn’t known for getting separation, Godwin is better but not by much. This is why the Bucs need a reliable #3 wr with speed who can get separation

  3. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    @ JP_09

The Bucs wouldn’t need a reliable #3 WR if they would just Utilize their damn Tight Ends!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This not a hard concept but apparently it is a foregone conclusion for Bruce Arians and his 50 assistant coaches.

  4. JP_09 Says:

@Anyhem that’s very true, it’s amazing the BS that is spewed when these coaches are asked about our TEs. Yet every week the 9ers find a way to get Kittle involved

  5. JP_09 Says:

    @Anthem*

  6. DB55 Says:

Only Matt Stafford accounts for more percentage of the offense than JayMiss ATM the human crableg Uber predator WinsNot. 53% of the O goes through him and that’s not counting yac which is non existent anyway.

If JayMiss WinsNot the greatest quarterback in the history of the buccaneers didn’t have Josh Wells and Earl Watford blocking for him maybe he wouldn’t lead the league in ints but wtfdik.

He better learn how to press cover or it’s going to be an even longer season.

  7. 407buc Says:

Bucs don’t throw many screens or crossing routes. When ball is thrown 15-20 yards downfield there won’t be much yac

  8. asdf Says:

“So what does this tell Joe? It suggests the Bucs are throwing a lot of passes along the sideline and in the end zone. Jameis Winston ranks tied for fifth in the NFL in passing touchdowns.”

    Yeah……………………………………………………………………………………..

  9. Defense Rules Says:

Yup, Jameis is tied for 5th in most passing TDs (16). Now consider that ME13 has 7 of those and Chris Godwin has 6 of those … 13 passing TDs (81% of the total) to just 2 receivers. Cam Brate has 2 TDs & Breshad Perriman has 1 very, very lucky TD to bring the total to 16. What’s wrong with that picture? (Hint: On a team that has 3 other WRs, 4 TEs & 4 RBs … 11 potential receivers with ZERO TDs).

YAC is the least of our problems Joe. And Jameis more than anyone should feel REALLY BLESSED that Mike Evans and Chris Godwin have been healthy for every game.

  10. unbelievable Says:

Eh, some of it is the routes / play design, some of it is Jameis not leading the receivers enough when it is a crossing type route.

    This is nothing new.

  11. Uncle Says:

Mike Evans is another version of Keyshawn. Good WR, but he’s getting down after catching the ball. You people who want to put this on Winston are silly. They don’t throw to their backs at all, and Evans is a catch it and get down guy. That’s the story here.

  12. Jean Lafitte Says:

Too many circus catches and stationary catches. Jameis rarely hits receivers in stride when he launching bombs.. Not like Wilson did a few times last game. Some of them were beauties.

  13. Defense Rules Says:

Oops, my bad. It’s only TEN other receivers with ZERO TDs. Aahh yes, that’s so much better.

  14. DB55 Says:

Mike leads the league in catches of 40+ yards with 6. If he caught all the balls that hit his hands in stride America’s Quarterback the human ATM JayMiss WinsNot would have more TDs than Russell Wilson. I’ve said too much.

  15. ancientasbuc Says:

We also do not throw a lot of shallow crosses to beat man but rather seams and vertical where safeties are waiting to tackle. High YPA but low YAC.

  16. DB55 Says:

If you haven’t noticed it seems as though we’re incapable of running screen plays.

  17. Capt. Tim Says:

Evans and Godwin are both physical, tough WRs.
So many passes to them are “jumpball” situations, where they have to go up and fight for the badly thrown ball!
Its the same situation Evans had in College- he has the skills to catch poorly thrown balls.
He is so used to it. He made Johnny Mansell look like a QB.
Now hes making Winston look like hes better than he really is.
With an accurate QB, instead of a lobber, he’d lead the league in YAC.

By the time the Bucs finally figure this out, Evans will be 35, and never been on
A winning team in his career

Tampa Bay- where talent comes to die on the vine. Wasted

  18. StonedBuc Says:

Fake news, we dont throw slants and post routes.

  19. ModHairKen Says:

    Who cares about YAC?

  20. geno711 Says:

In advance stats, Evans and Godwin expected YAC is just fine.

As others have said this team (the coaches, the running backs, the quarterback, the tight ends) have not done a lot with those high YAC plays to the tight ends, running backs and slot receivers.

Evans is not ducking down after the catch.

By the way another advance stat shows the Bucs offensive line actually gives the 16th most time to pass in the league. Then why so many hits and sacks

  21. Ndog Says:

Every game I post the same thing. Can we ever break a tackle after a catch, can we ever break a long run? Of course not which means it is really hard for this team to score especially with the lack of short fields cause our crappy defense. Yet despite that we have the number 4 scoring offense in the NFL

Also you should realize that Winston could very well lead the NFL in passing yards this year AND be in the top 5 in passing TDs. Yet you people act like he sucks. Sometimes I wonder if you even actually watch the games.

  22. VA Tom Says:

Jameis has always thrown “stopper” balls. The receiver has to stop to grab them. Then he is hit. Mystery solved. I’ve seen Jameis throw more leading passes this season. So it’s good to see coaching improving his game. But he seems to constantly have to work to improve the not so fine points of the game.

  23. DB55 Says:

So many passes to them are “jumpball” situations

This ⬆️ like many things posted on this site is simply not true. How can people just come on this site and lie is beyond me. Do you not think anyone watches the games?

  25. Mort Says:

Only offensive stat that matters is points. We are doing fine with that one. Only defensive stat that matters is points allowed. That’s where we suck. Guess that’ll fall on Jameis as well, eh?

  26. Defense Rules Says:

Mort … No, but Jameis did contribute THREE Pick-6’s to the defense’s POINTS ALLOWED total. And several of his turnovers did result in very short field situations where the BEST the defense could hope for was to allow a FG. Oops, forgot the safety; my bad.

And oh yes, this awful defense created 13 turnovers that resulted in several very short fields for Jameis & the offense, thus allowing them to score either a TD or a FG quite easily. But we won’t talk about all THOSE situations because that doesn’t fit the agenda so many seem to be intent on promoting.

And Mort, the only stat that REALLY matters is Won-Loss. BOTH the offense AND the defense have taken turns contributing to our enviable 2-6 mid-season record.

  27. Petty Officer Buc Says:

Curious if anyone could calculate all the games that Fitz played for the Bucs and what the associated YAC was.

  28. Jim Says:

    Defense: “unenviable”?

  29. Defense Rules Says:

Oh and Mort, just for kicks go back & look at the Scoring Summary, Drives Summary & Full Play-by-Play for just the 49ers game. Disregard VHIII’s Pick-6 that gave our OFFENSE 7 points. And disregard Jameis’ FIRST Pick-6 that gave SF 7 free points that counted against our DEFENSE.

Instead, go to 2:24 of the 4th qtr. Garoppolo’s pass to Matt Breida, incomplete and defended by Mike Edwards, forces SF to kick a FG at the TAM-29 … FG good and SF goes up 23-17. THE GAME WAS STILL VERY WINNABLE AT THAT POINT … over 2 mins left & we were tailing by only 6 points (Bucs defense had really only allowed 16 pts & had scored 7 pts itself).

After the SF kickoff, Bucs have the ball at the TAM-21 yd line. FIRST PLAY … Jameis’ pass intercepted by Witherspoon & returned 25 yds for a TD. Two pt attempt good; 49ers now up 31-17 (the final score). With over 2 mins left in the game & the score 23-17, that was a very winnable game … until Jameis’ SECOND Pick-6 of the game. But for sure THAT shouldn’t fall on Jameis, right?

Some other games it’s been the defense that pooped all over themselves. Like S/Ts did in the Giants game? This team BEATS ITSELF in so many new & unique ways it’s ridiculous … OFFENSE, DEFENSE, S/Ts. HOPEFULLY they’ve now gotten THAT out of their system and can start kicking ass & taking names in this second half of the season.

  30. Figures Says:

Lmao NDOG and DB55 are the absolute worst lol.

Everyday i come here for a laugh and they never let me down lol.

Thanks ladies Lol. Never disappointed lol. I’ve never seen a QB in my life in all my years of watching football be coddled as much as Winston.

The lengths these two go to defend every single play of Winston’s entire career is astounding lol.

I bet if Winston went to UF they would have a totally different view of things.

    Couple of hoooommeerrrssss lol.

They literally believe Winston has never made a single football mistake in his life lol. Literally every single thing is someone else’s fault.

Then they come in here and act like they are the ones with the secret knowledge that has only been bestowed upon them about football. Lol.

And ofcourse everyone else is st upid and doesn’t know anything at all and we should all bow down and beg for this forbidden knowledge lol.

Everyone with eyes have seen more passes than they can count of the QB throwing balls behind the receiver or balls where they have to stop or fall down to even make the catch. Buuuuttt ofcourse it’s the receivers fault lol.

And don’t respond either of you. Especially DB55. Most of the time I’m not sure he’s even typing in English with his 2nd grade grammar lol.

Anyone who uses “an” in place of “and” shouldn’t even be allowed to speak.

  31. VA Tom Says:

Dog. Far from lying. I’d post videos…lol…but you know we can’t just watch the last 4 yrs of games. Or make up your own reality. Whatever.

  32. Defense Rules Says:

Jim … OK ‘unenviable’ (I was trying to be sarcastic but missed).

  33. SB Says:

    Accurate throws lead to YAC.
    “Simple as that”

  34. TexBuc Says:

-4 Vertical offense = a vertical long ball offense (think Dan Fouts and the Chargers)
-BA’s offensive philosophy is for QB to look for long pass and work back to short pass.
-Opposing DC’s understand BA’s long ball offense and usually calls for deeper safeties.

What’s up peeps? Coming for the game this weekend. Flying down from Toronto. I have a full four days there and I’ve been before but just for games. Anything I should take the wifey out to do? We are 30 and 27 so whatever you guys think we would enjoy. Would love a few ideas. Thanks! Also any specific tailgating areas I should do up? Thanks!

  36. BrianDorry55 Says:

That’s because our “air yards” are near the top.

  37. JimmyJack Says:

    Seems like YAC maybe overrated.

That a look at the list. I’d much rather have most of the bottom YAC offenses then the top ones.

Never understood the worry over this stat. If we are able to drive the ball and score points why care about YAC? For what actual purpose? Never made sense to me.

  38. whaaatttsss uuuup Says:

WWOOOOOOW NOW YOU HAVE HIT A NEW LOW OF KISSING JAMEIS BUTT!!! … DUDE IT IS BECAUSE THEY ARE TOO BUSY JUMPING TEN FEET IN THE AIR TO CATCH A PASS FROM THAT IDIOT YOU HAVE A CRUSH ON!!! … I MEAN HOW YOU CAN BE A WRITER AND SEE ALL THESE GAMES AND NOT SEE RECEIVERS HAVING TO ORA-GAMY EVERY SINGLE CATCH??? DO YOU HAVE THAT BIG OF A CRUSH ON HIM THAT YOU JUST BLIND YOURSELF TO EVERYTHING NEGATIVE ABOUT HIM?? … IMAGINE IF JAMEIS HAD THE RECEIVERS TOM BRADY HAS HAD OVER THE YEARS!! HE MAKES THEM LOOK GOOD AND THYE ALWAYS HAVE A LOT OF YAC BECAUSE HE IS AN ACTUAL NFL QB …. THIS DEFENSE OF LITERALLY THE WORST RATED QB IN THE LEAGUE IS EMBARRASSING!!!

  39. Buccaneerscotty Says:

  44. Delaware Bucs Fan Says:

It’s a Bucs life when the two ‘offensive gurus’ we’ve had couldn’t figure out how to use Bryant and Galloway and then Howard and Brate at the same time. This franchise is a pain test.

I’m finally getting through to the yahoos.

  47. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @Figures

I certainly understand your frustration. Sometimes disagreeing about football can be annoying.

While I share your observation about NDOG and DB55. Yes sometimes they seem blinded by their admiration of JW. I don’t agree with that…but I understand THEIR frustration because while as you correctly point out JW is hardly perfect…he’s not the worst QB in history as some would like to present…not you perhaps Figures but some people have been pretty over the top in the criticism.

So while we disagree with their level of enthusiasm… for me personally…YMMV. I still consider them both good dudes and while I may disagree I respect their opinions. They are simply reflecting their own frustration and sometimes I suspect they feel the need to engage in hyperbole to match the negative exaggeration that frequently turns up here.

I’d like to think I’d be friends with DB55 if we met. He was a football player and I think I can relate to some of the life frustration he has been forced to endure. I’ve seen some of the crap with my own eyes. I’m sure I’d get along with NDOG too.

  48. Ndog Says:

You guys make up some much crap you actually believe it. That is what is truly sad, you can’t even enjoy the best part of our team cause you have convinced yourself that Jameis isn’t the guy. You want sooooooo bad to be right you just can’t accept that you are WRONG. Guys if you think he is any more inaccurate than any other QB then you simply aren’t watching anyone else play. Every QB misses throws. In fact last week Jameis had exactly one more incompletion that the projected league MVP on the road in a hostile environment. Want you guys just can’t get your head around is when you throw more passes, in more predictable situations then the level of difficulty goes up this the percentages come down. It’s really simple math but like everything else with Jameis your blinded to the FACTS cause you want so badly to be correct. He has had a GREAT year if you look at the FACTS. The 9ers game he had one TO that was his fault, Panthers game no TOs, Giants game one TO but also threw 4 TDs and drove for the game winning drive only for it to be missed, Rams game NFC offense player of the week (enough said), Saints no TOs and the pressure was constant with no Dotson and a hobbled Cappa, Panthers game Evans sucked and cause two pictures picks, his atm was hit on one and he did have o e fumble and 2 picks on him. Tenn. everyone on the team pretty much said he was not responsible for any of the TOs and still brought us to a second half lead. Seattle went toe to toe with one of the best in the league and was not responsible for any TOs and we lost cause of horrible defense.
Please tell me how that is not an excellent year to date plus we are 4th in scoring, he has the most passing yards in the NFL for anybody with 8 or less games, he is tied for fifth in the league in TD passes. Guys you can hate him all you want but when this team has given him time and ANY run game he has been outstanding this year, OUTSTANDING. Believe it or not.

  49. “That guy” Says:

I’m not happy with my bucs right now, but joe this is a misleading statistic, what are you trying to get at ?

  50. Jean Lafitte Says:

Not sure where you staying though here’s a few: hit the river walk and get an all day pass on boat, hit Amarture Works, Uleulue, American Social. Tons of things around to do.

South Tampa off Howard as well, bunch of bars, restaurants, etc. Ciroe Speakeasy, get the password ahead of time.

Also maybe hit boat shuttle from downtown Tampa to ST Pete and back.

  53. Jean Lafitte Says:

The fact is we’ve been a perennial loser with Jameis at QB

  54. JimmyJack Says:

NDog if Winston is really that great then he will finish the year out strong.

Then most of us can look back and say that his early struggles were just an adjustment to a new offense……..Something that many other QBs have had struggles with.

Just let it play out bro. Most fans will support a winning QB which is how hell finish if he keeps going the way he has the last two games(even though Tennessee was kinda iffy). But if we get any more mental breakdowns games it’s gonna be tough.

Not sure what so hard about letting him proove his worth.

  55. Jean Lafitte Says:

yeah let it finish. we only have the easiest part of our schedule coming up lol

  56. Ndog Says:

But there you go JimmyJack you said that magic word winning. That is not totally in his control, cause if it was we would be at a minimum 5-3 right now.

  57. JimmyJack Says:

Understand Ndog. I just happen to think if Winston plays well down the stretch we will beat the teams on our schedule.

Either way I would consider it a winning type of performce by the QB. If the rest of the team chokes away the game around him I can personally judge different aspects differently……..But good luck convincing anybody else without wins.

We got fans already calling for Bruce’s head 8 games i over losses. And they are screaming for complete teardown/rebuild……. Ironically firing and hiring new coaches so often is the exact reason why we have been perrenial losers for the last 2 decades(rounded up).

  58. JimmyJack Says:

Jean if we are a bad team the schedule aren’t very easy at all.

  59. Lamarcus Says:

JW is a top 5 any given day until someone comes that’s better otherwise he our only hope for wins.

You can’t really depend on anyone else to do it so yea JW all the way and let him retire as a Buc

  60. JimmyJack Says:

Bruce comes in. Brings in a new system and all the sudden. We gotta go get a bunch new corners cause he need physical corners he needs quicker corners. The plan at CB from our last coach now has been wasted.

Same with TEs. He has different plays and all the investment made at the position is now wasted.

This happens every time we bring in a new coach. They need specific players for their system and it completely wastes any plans we had if the current roster doesn’t match.

Getting rid of Bruce just repeats the same problem. A new guy will come in and might have no intentions to to pay good money to Devin White to stay here. Might wanna use that money elsewhere that benefits his system.

Beyond ridiculous to wanna go through this process again.

  61. Jean Lafitte Says:

    Jameis – 59.3 completion percentage 16TD’s 16 turnovers

There are 5 QB’s with lower completion percentages than America’s QB, and they’re all riding the bench

  62. Jean Lafitte Says:

feast or famine ain’t cutting it. we need consistency.

  63. Jean Lafitte Says:

    according to google:

    Winston hand size
Winston’s hand size is 9 3/8 inches, which is “not great, below the norm,” in Polian’s view. “9.5 is the norm, 10 is ideal.”.

Tiny hands ..reason for so many fumbles

  64. Lamarcus Says:

    Jean

I don’t need stats to tell me what’s going on. JW is a outstanding Qb he has more talent than guys who put up good stats or whatever you call those numbers

  65. Jean Lafitte Says:

yeah Lamarcus nobody likes stats when shows how below average their QB really is

  66. Lamarcus Says:

A consistent Qb is not gonna win here. Can stop a QB from throwing 300 + yards on us? I’ll 295 right about now

Your speaking like we are another Qb away and the Qb is wrecking the teams morale like a high school team. When everything is fixed and JW is still messing up then cut him. That’s how you make a proper eval

  67. JimmyJack Says:

Agreed Jean. Consistency is the issue. Every NFL is too important. Can’t have your QB throwing games(plural) away……..Just like how our secondary has primarily lost us a few and needs to be better same with QB.

Good News is the Whisperer has got it figured out.

  68. Jean Lafitte Says:

He’s so smart Stanford turned him down. Yeah for you FSU homers it was because they were afraid he show them up.

Pfft …if you believe that I got another one for you.

  69. Jean Lafitte Says:

    Jameis – 59.3 completion percentage

lowest of all the starting QB’s

  70. Jean Lafitte Says:

Even Dalton is ahead of him Joe

  71. Jean Lafitte Says:

I hope Lefty continues to call the short passing game like he did last game even though in the second half it turned into a bombs away game. Stick with the short to intermediate passes. Jameis seems to do well in that west coast type offense, except for screens which he sucks at.

  72. 2020 What is the bucs future plan? Says:

JayMiss WinsNot perfect name it says it all

  73. Eric Says:

Well I see the haters are all over this so let’s look at the list almost every team in the top ten run a version of the west coast offense with quick passes the screen game in all! The lower group employs the downfield passing game dammit Winston for being in the same category as Wilson Ryan Stafford and Prescott! But you get killed they get praised what a joke of a fan base we have!

  74. I Bleed Pewter Says:

Yep what a joke the fan base loves losing

  75. Bobby Says:

Capt Tim, if our receivers go up for a ball and have to fight for it it’s not because it’s badly thrown, it’s because Jameis knows they are big physical receivers and if you put Evans or Godwin in a jump ball situation they have a better chance of coming down with it than a smaller defender. You see that all over the league. I do see a lot of underthrown balls from Winston but when the defenders back is turned the receiver still has the advantage. I don’t have a problem with jump balls. I have a problem with trying to squeeze it between 3 defenders when we’re in the red zone or the other teams 20.

  76. Alanbucsfan Says:

    Here’s a stat that lost 3 games-

    10 interceptions
    12 sacks
    3 fumbles lost

Jameis Winston- vs 49ers, 2nd Panthers game, Titans

  77. stpetebucsfan Says:

Seems the JW picture is coming into sharper focus where folks are starting to agree.

NOBODY can argue that JW is not wildly inconsistent.

NOBODY can argue that JW is an NFL winner.

Many here however believe that surrounded by the right team JW could win.

Bottom line for me from all the posters including JW’s most ardent supporters who constantly bemoan the OTHER parts of the team that are ALSO performing poorly…IE don’t blame it all on JW.

I accept that there is enough blame to go around. However by his supporters own comments it’s becoming clear to me that JW is not the kind of QB that can carry a team. However I do believe he could win with a strong enough team.

IE…JW is NEVER going to be Russell Wilson who btw played with a defensive backfield just as bad as ours…only ONE really great WR and still not as good as either ME or Godwin…OL’s both mediocre…Seattle clearly has the better running game.

We are rapidly approaching the fish or cut bait date. I think I’ll wait until the season is over to make that decision.

  78. Bucswinorlose Says:

Patrick! Thanks a lot buddy! A lot of awesome suggestions. Much appreciated !

  79. BucsBandit Says:

    1) Accuracy issues – if you put the ball in a better placement then your WRs can continue running after a catch.

    2) TIMING – this is more important. Winston rarely gets rid of the ball fast enough to hit a WR at the beginning of his route which is when WRs have the best chance to continue a route in space. The longer it takes to complete a pass, the more that routes have usually broken down and WRs are coming back to the ball or trying to run a secondary route to try and get open for Jameis to complete… anything.

    These are INDISPUTABLE facts.
