Hargreaves Era Ends Appropriately

November 12th, 2019

Fired!

Yesterday, Bucco Bruce Arians explained to local media that he threw a challenge flag he didn’t have to burn late in the game against Arizona to make a statement to the officials.

Today, he made a more appropriate statement.

Vernon Hargreaves was cut.

Hargreaves was having a poor season and was among the defensive backs Arians referred to as “soft” in previous weeks. And Joe’s quite certain he was one of the defensive backs called out for not playing as he was coached to do.

Things escalated Sunday when Hargreaves was benched in the middle of the Bucs-Cardinals game. Arians said yesterday it was because of loafing during a specific play in the game.

Joe is applauding. Standing ovation.

It’s about time a Bucs team had the will to cut a second-rate player in midseason, a guy who was not part of the future.

Yeah, Joe’s looking at you Jason Licht for insulting innocent Bucs fans with the Chris “Swaggy” Baker experience for at least two months too long.

This is an example of what good teams do. Don’t let the loafers infect the locker room.

Hargreaves wasn’t going to get paid his expensive fifth-year option next season. And he was setting a poor example for rookies? Outta here.

Joe is confident Hargreaves will find a new team this season. Former first-round picks typically get a second chance.

Joe wishes Hargreaves well. He might be remembered most here for his pick-6 score on opening day (pictured above) and his weed-smoking video that appeared a couple of years ago.

And that closes the book on the 2016 Bucs draft class in Tampa.

  1. DB55 Says:

Long overdue, he should have sent mj Stewart packing too.

  2. TOM EDRINGTON Says:

    Great move! Gutsy call…..

  3. Robert Says:

now, hold the QB to the same standards.

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Absolutely, positively the right move by BA…..you get rid of loafers or they multiply…..Jamal Dean is VH3’s successor.

  5. JimbobBucsFan Says:

    Culture change is now!

    In BA we trust!

  6. 1Gr8Buc Says:

Adios! This will hopefully open the eyes of some fringe/young players on the team to step up or step out.

  7. H8JWLVEBUCS Says:

Bet you he will go somewhere else and shine. Now have the balls to say your QB is not all that good papa smurf, but he wont because he would have to admit he failed.

  8. 1Gr8Buc Says:

    @robert….. Shut! Up!

  9. JonJohn Says:

This is great! Now time to see what the rookies are truly made of and hopefully we add a vet.

  10. Nick Says:

WOW……. I was thinking BA was getting soft! He just got my vote for another year no matter what!

  11. Asdf Says:

    Fire GL as well

  12. jmarkbuc Says:

    Over due…

  13. Mike in MO Says:

Still waiting for the Glazers to hold Licht accountable for his past five years of mediocre (piss-poor) results.

  14. Snook Says:

Truly a disgrace to the #28…

  15. Sarasota Garey Says:

    So who replaces him?

  16. JimbobBucsFan Says:

I do expect Licht and Arians to hold ALL players accountable just as they are each holding themselves accountable as judged by their actions.

  17. D-Rome Says:

Another failure by Backstabbin’ Jason Licht.

  18. jmarkbuc Says:

    Sarasota

A corpse from the morgue could replace Vern…with less finger wagging.

  19. Petty Officer Buc Says:

Another step in the right direction for building a strong culture. It’s addition by subtraction. These young corners don’t need the “veteran” to be a serial lofer both in practice and on the field, and to not take losses seriously instead acting smug.

Hopefully none of his antics rubbed off on the young corners.

  20. Blogtalkfootball.com Says:

We added a Guard off of waivers!

  21. Smashsquatch Says:

Long time coming. Eyeball test was obvious. Not having to see #28 getting toasted weekly just made watching the Bucs a touch easier.

  22. ToesOnTheLine!!! Says:

Have to be willing to walk the walk if you’re gonna talk the talk, so good for BA. The Bucs need to change the losing culture first and foremost, so it’s the right move. As Joe pointed out the guy will likely be on another roster soon, maybe even a playoff contender with a “stronger” locker room? If that’s the case then a win for VHIII.

  23. tmaxcon Says:

bucs throw first round picks away faster than Ron Jeremy goes through condoms….

    813

hang in there… there are a lot of public assistance programs for freshly unemployed newly weds.

  24. Buc50 Says:

Looks like Lovie still has some fans around here. Have you seen what Lovie has done to Illinois?

  25. Petty Officer Buc Says:

Also, can anyone remember another draft for any team where everyone was cut within 4 years? And most are out of the NFL it seems.

  26. tmaxcon Says:

only people upset about this cut are 813 and booze salesmen across the bay!!!!

  27. Buccanole Says:

    Hargreaves draft class:
    Hargreaves
    Noah Spence
    Aguayo
    Ryan Smith
    Caleb Benenoch
    Devante Bond
    Dan Vitale
The Glazers “DEAR GOD……………… sign this man to an extension!!”

  28. JimbobBucsFan Says:

The idea that Licht makes decisions in a vacuum is a sad joke. Licht takes his lumps and then moves on. He works with his head coaches, not against them.

    Wake up to reality.

  29. 813bucboi Says:

VHG didnt get it done….simple as that….

SMB has played well….dean looked good….

    hope they continue to develop…..

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  30. tmaxcon Says:

yet another failure I was RIGHT about from day one…. Never being wrong is a burden but fun… you people cling to garbage players year in and year out which makes it so easy…

yet another failed local feel good story who could not play ball…..

  31. El Buco Realisto Says:

So much for all the sheep’s theories that the roster just needed to be “coached up”!!!!!!!!!!!! What a garbage organization this is that the sheep deserve!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We need a poll of what is most embarrassing!!!!!!! And the two choices are the front office player evaluation, or the local media’s player evaluation!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hard decision there!!!!!!!!!!! The real fans have had to endure the local media’s proclamation of what a ” talented roster ” the Bucs have had since 2010!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What flat out garbage!!!!!!!!!!!! And like most of the “real fans” that saw this all coming over a year ago, and have stayed away from Ray Jay Stadium while the con men and pyramid scheme as they hand each other contract extension while they take this organization to new lowest of low’s!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Enjoy all this garbage sheep when it is the same thing all over again next year and there will be only a third full stadium!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 revealed answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already knew!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  32. H8JWLVEBUCS Says:

Im telling guys this favoritism is gonna back fire on him watch, you cant call out players in public and then make excuses for other players and think player are going to stand for it.

  33. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

could thing jenna laine asked such tough questions the other day to a guy that loafed

  34. SlamEmHard Says:

    Robert,

I don’t understand all of us as Bucs fan. Yes Jameis is not the QB who has done well for us but he plays hard and practices hard. How do you compare him with Hargraves who had an effort issue. We looked at all starting QB’s around league the past weekend and compared them to Jameis and there were 9 QB who are having better season them Jameis. Find a solution before cutting a serviceable player. Think like an owner of the business.

  35. 813bucboi Says:

    tmax

the only person upset is your mother…..lol…

VHG laid pipe weekly in mommys bedroom…..

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  36. bucsince79 aka bumaneer Says:

Culture change!!! It takes time… In BA we trust… Back off the Glazers!! Player haters with zero game pipe down…

  37. El Buco Realisto Says:

That 813Buffon has not been right about anything!!!!!!!!!!! His takes are as good as a Jason licht draft or an ole stale biscuit clock management!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If 813Buffon was given a watch he still would not know what time it was!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Vh3 says about 813Buffon “garbage recognize garbage”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LOL!!!!!!!!!! Its all coaching right 813buffon??????????????????

  38. Aceofaerospace Says:

As a Gator homer, I was excited when we drafted him. I had extremely high hopes this year, but, this was the right move. Sad.

  39. 813bucboi Says:

    H8JW

    PREACH!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  40. 813bucboi Says:

    realist

    i was right about dirk…..smitty…..and you….lol…

you’ve never been right a day in your life…..lol…

i told you smitty would never walk an NFL sideline ever again!!!!!!!

    and i was right!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  41. martinii Says:

Good move on VH3 which brings me to a persistent question regarding short DB’s. With the new PI rules wouldn’t it be more advantageous to have good speed but the height to cover the bigger receivers. For years we have bitched about the NFC South DB’s having a hard time in coverage. Dean has good size. though he is a rookie I think he has potential.

  42. Sarasota Garey Says:

Can anyone tell me the name of the corner who briefly played for us last year, we had him in preseason this past year and released him, we was king of good, had some pass breakups. I never knew why we let him go.

  43. 813bucboi Says:

    TMAX

    dont get too happy….lol…

he’ll be your manager at wally world one day….LOL…

until then, he’ll get picked up by another team…..lol…

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  44. Greg Says:

Jason Light actually makes me sick to my stomach. He is completely incompetent and the Glaziers just extended him? Breaks my heart but there is NO HOPE going forward with this franchise. Where are we strong at? No defense for several years, our best pass rushers are done after this year. Horrible o-line especially at run blocking. An inaccurate inconsistent QB. A coach that already retired once and may not be around longer than a year or two. Seriously! What is there to hang your hat on?

  45. 74 Bucs fan Says:

Later Hargraves! Don’t let the door hit you in the… oh let the door hit him. Loafer!

  46. 813bucboi Says:

    sarasota

    harris?

    GO BUCS!!!!

  47. Danny Says:

About damn time we hold player’s accountable for their effort! This should open eyes in the locker room that mistakes and lack of effort are not okay on teams that want to win!!!

  48. Warren Brown Says:

    2016 draft man smh.

  49. ClodHopper Says:

I’d like to hear more about this “statement” to the officials BA was trying to make. Was his statement that he likes wasting time outs with frivolous PI challenges, or that he likes wasting time outs by throwing his flag after he wasted his challenges on frivolous PI challenges? What’s the method to his madness? Did I miss that article?

  50. Frank Pillow Says:

If you can’t play zone, man or press…If you don’t want to tackle…If you lack height, length and footspeed… If you lack heart and toughness (mental and physical), then its over. Smitty looked and VHIII and saw a young Grimes and coach’s kid who played in a premier conference–maybe someone else will see that too. Maybe VHIII will mature and come to understand what being a professional is all about. Maybe THIS organization should do some self-reflection too.

  51. Greg Says:

Next light moves.. Re-sign Loverboy Winston, trade away Evans for draft picks (Then people will see just how bad Winston is) Draft more corners and soft running backs.

  52. martinii Says:

    Top 9 CB’s in 2020 draft over 6 ft.

  53. JimBuc2 Says:

I’ve been calling for BA to publish his ‘accountability sheets’. That didn’t happen, but now we know whose name appeared at the top of that list. OK, I’ll take that. Churn the roster, we need players that ball out every play of every game. Go Bucs!

  54. Lamarcus Says:

    Vh3 is garbage…… obviously

  55. ClodHopper Says:

BA has the benefit of replay and a supposed expert in his ear with “the right verbiage” and still misses on his challenges more than he gets them right. I think his statement was “I’m winging it”

  56. Sarasota Garey Says:

@813 yes Harris, I was surprised he was cut just like I was surprised Adams was cut.

  57. Dapostman Says:

When you aren’t talented enough and you aren’t hustling well there you have it. Guys who don’t have the talent better hustle. The message is clear. No hustle no pay.

  58. DB55 Says:

I think licht has at least 2 drafts where everyone is out of the league. Check the Charles Sims draft.

  59. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We are a 3-6 team with 6 high to mid round DBs drafted in the last 2 years and we have a #1 draft pick headed for a high-salary 5th year who is loafing……

The only question is…..why was he not traded and the only answer has to be….because nobody wanted him.

  60. Season Is Over Says:

McCoy and Hargreaves were cut for zero value? How were Bowles and Arians unable to coach him up to get any value. Why does the media always miss the best part of the story.

  61. BigHog Says:

Robert /you gonna call out FAMOUS for loafing GTFOH! H8JWLVEBUCS:you don’t call out your franchise QB …you take him outback and give him both barrels …by the time he gets back to the locker room everyone will know it…that’s the way that works and I’m pretty sure FAMOUS has been outback this season already!!!

  62. miken Says:

    another great pick from jason

  63. Clw JB Says:

I spent a few minutes reading recaps of our draft grades from 2016 – most gave us a B or C, they ALL said VHIII and Spence were GREAT picks, the kicker dragged down the grade

We have exactly 1 player left from a draft 3.5 years ago and he is just a special teamer that cant start at CB in a room full of rookies…

A lot more people than Jason got fooled….

  64. 813bucboi Says:

    sarasota

    i was surprised too….

and we brought adams back….shouldve kept both….

    GO BUCS!!!!

  65. Buccfan37 Says:

I wanted Hargreaves to be good with the Bucs but it didn’t happen. Mostly because he was a local product. Anyway a third of this season wins he produced.

  66. BucFanFromOH Says:

My gawd El Buco Realisto’s posts are impossible to read with so much punctuation. 15 exclamation points per sentence and thirty spaces between words. Almost worse than JL’s 2016 draft class.

  67. Bradinator Says:

Overdue. He’s been chasing after guys all season. Shame he didn’t pan out, hate blowing a 1st rnd pick like that. He flat never produced for us. NFL draft is a bit of a crapshoot though. Hopefully Dean, and the rest of the guys will take notice, you gotta do your job and put in the extra work. I don’t know that it was a “gutsy” decision since the guy only made “cameo appearances” for four years, kinda like Superman showing up in Seinfeld episodes and just as useful.

  68. El Buco Realisto Says:

    @tampabaybucfan

Don’t make things up and or excuses!!!!!!!!! That is what Bruce arrogance is here for!!!!!!!!! And if what you said was even close to true, then why all the BS and lies of ” he needs to be in a different scheme” and how he was not used correctly!!!!!!! And how he fits in the toilet bowled defense, and how they will get the most out of him!!!!!!!!!!! What garbage Tampabaybucfan!!!!!!!!!!!! You sound like 813buffon and that is not a good look!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The truth is being revealed sheep!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  69. Buczilla Says:

Good riddance. Hopefully the Glazers will have the courage to do the same thing to Licht. No hope until this dude is run the hell out of here.

  70. Kobe Faker Says:

    “STOP!!!!!

THE BUCSHEEP IS BEING DECEIVED AGAIN!!!!

    THE KLUELESS JBF POSTERS

But Kobe, you said in 2017 that the 2016 draft was the worst in Tampa bay history

Yes I did but the Bucsheep is being misled by Grandpa piper

VH3 was a average slot corner. last year proved it was a position suited for his limited skillset

why did the beloved BA/Bowles put him outside? That is great coaching and putting players in the right position?

YOU, SHEEP HAVE BEEN MISLED AGAIN!!

VH3 WILL BE A COMPETENT SLOT CORNER FOR THE NEXT 7 YEARS

    AND IMMEDIATELY PICKED UP!!”

    The Wise Kobe Faker

  71. HereWeGoAgain Says:

    1. Credit Mike Smith for ruining VHIII
    2. Credit Jason Licht for Drafting VHIII so high
    3. Credit Jason Licht for not trading him, a late round pick is better than nothing

  72. lowercaseg Says:

    MJ Stewart should be next

  73. Go Bucs 72 Says:

Dean already has half of Hargreaves’ career interception total in around 80 plays. He is terrible skill wise and you compound that with his constant loafing, he’ll be out of the league before 21. He did have great skin and some glorious hair though. Bye Felicia.

  74. Swampbuc Says:

Ironically he had a nice pass breakup after he came back into the game, and I didn’t think his play on 4th and 5 that should have ended the game was worthy of pass interference. But obviously his effort and maturity are too inconsistent and they are appropriately making an example out of him.

  75. Buc1987 Says:

    This is great.

One less thing to b**ch about!

  76. Robert Says:

    @bighog

“you don’t call out your franchise QB”

WTF, WTF did he just say?????????

seriously, we need eye roll emoji’s or face palms up in here. This double standard is so obvious the players will turn on BA. but he’s so engrained in “I can fix” JW he won’t do it. gonna go out to pasture with a good resume, and one failure that is JW. he can live with that vs starting over. BA’s ego will be his undoing…same with JW. buclife

  77. HereWeGoAgain Says:

I agree Kobe Faker.. VHIII has some value but he’s not a CB1
Let him play nickel back or slot corner or trade him (before the deadline) to a team that will know what to do with him. Hey, here’s an idea.. let’s wait 2 weeks after the trade deadline to figure out crap out.

This team does not have a CB1
    4 – CB3’s do not make a CB1

Jason Licht needs to be held accountable… my dog knew this team had no secondary going into the season

  78. Robert Says:

deflection from the disaster that is at the qb position……plain and simple

  79. Kobe Faker Says:

    “KOBE FAKER GUARANTEES THAT VH3

WILL BE TOP SLOT CORNER DURING THE REST OF THIS YEAR

HE WILL PLAY LIGHTS OUT WITH HIS FUTURE TEAM

Mark Kobes Words for it shall be done”

    The Wise Kobe Faker

  80. Ndog Says:

H8JWLVEBUCS what you don’t understand is it’s not favoritism if it’s true and every word he has said good or bad has been the truth. Players don’t mind the truth they don’t like being lied to.

  81. Allbuccedup Says:

My first thumbs up to BA. Long overdue.

  82. Eric Says:

    Good move.

Now give Jameis a new contract. 105 career TDs in 4 1/2 seasons and s lot more coming this year..

Best the saints and we crawl back into this thing..

  83. Jonathan Limpchimpi Says:

Licht Years behind the rest of the league…can’t imagine why?!

  84. Bucs Fan Since ‘76 Says:

Joe says: “ And that closes the book on the 2016 Bucs draft class in Tampa.”

And that one stat should close the book on Jason Licht’s time in Tampa Bay.

  85. JustBucNwin Says:

Love the message this sends to the team…accountability! Now where is Licht’s accountability message???

  86. Howard Cosell Says:

VHG will probably go on to have a great career once he gets on a real team and gets far away from glasers dysfunctional crap show Lol

  87. Dapostman Says:

    Nassib for Hargreaves. 2016 draft.

    I’ll take that.

  88. TBCubanBuc Says:

Let’s take a look at the bigger picture…AC/DC lovin’ Jason Licht wasted a 1st round pick on this toaster (he was always getting burnt)! Great investment 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 We gotta get better at drafting

  89. unbelievable Says:

    Bye Fellicia!

  90. BucHead588 Says:

I got one liked VH3 his play wasn’t where it needed to be an he just didn’t raise his level the coach did the right thing an cut his ass I was rooting for him an the 1st 2 games I thought he was going to have a good season then he just fell off good love Bucs don’t infect the Youngins in this team all trust in BA CD33 SMB26 JF35 MJ36 RS29 let’s get it done boys

  91. The Coroner Says:

My wife and I were at the game against the Cardinals. My wife said there was no intensity on the Bucs’ sideline. She said the players reminded her of golfers standing near the Tee-box waiting to take their golf shot

  92. Cgmaster27 Says:

Funny how all the trolls deflecting this to be about jameis. My goodness can you all get his jock out of your mouth for one article. Jameis derangement syndrom is alive and well. And again, he keeps playing like he has, he at least gets franchised ,and then we get to watch your heads explode, which would be more than worth it to me.

  93. BucsFan727 Says:

It least there will be alot of talent for a team looking for a cb next draft. So we could get a guy in the 3rd or 4th round to develope behind Dean Davis and Bunting. We need a LT a RT a RB and a 3rd wr. And maybe a QB. Winstons evaluation has this team sitting on there hands not trading for a player like M.Fitzpatric. because they dont know if they have to draft a QB yet.

  94. Buc1987 Says:

Kobe isn’t even supposed to be posting!

  95. Robert Says:

love how all the JW homers have woke names

  96. Bangkok Buc Says:

    See-ya Whoopie

  97. Tbbucs3 Says:

Congrats VH3, you’ve officially earned your bust, it’s just not in Canton.

Heck of a DB/WR for Wharton High School however.

  98. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

VH3 was in BA’s dog house from the git go….sat him out of practice in the beginning

  99. Stanglassman Says:

The wise one should know how stupid it would be to pay an average slot corner 10 million a year. Should also know timeouts are irrelevant inside of two minutes in the game’s halves too. Dunning-Kruger in full effect.

  100. cmurda Says:

I know this is a sad day for 813. I respect 813 but VH3 was impossible to defend. You gave it a valiant effort 813 and I respect your loyalty to him but you have to admit. This was necessary. Do you guys remember the play when Devin White ran maybe 70 yards to chase down the ball carrier in the Seahawks game. If you watch that play, pay attention to a certain #28 jogging on that play. In fact, he was ahead of Devin White and White blew by him. I know Devin White is faster than VH3 but that had to be the last straw. The fact that VH3 is literally ranked as one of the worst CB’s in the league and his game film supported those rankings is bad enough, but you show no heart or effort. Some team will take a chance on him. Let’s all hope we play that team. VH3 will be burnt, I mean targeted, early and often.

  101. cmurda Says:

The 2016 Draft is not completely closed Joe. We still got Ryan Smith baby! Did you see that play when he came in? Ohhhh, yeah, that wasn’t good. He is a great special teamer though.

  102. DooshLaRue Says:

    1987

    Neither are you!

    Remember?

  103. Oregonbucsfan Says:

    cmurda, I noticed that also.

Here is a different way to improve the Bucs: For the next decade the Bucs will not draft a UF or FSU player in the first three rounds.

That would have eliminated the biggest problem on the offense and the defense that we have or had.

  104. Joe in Michigan Says:

Thank you for doing the right thing. Put someone out there who wants to play football.

  105. Buc4evr Says:

VH3 will end up in Atlanta no doubt and will intercept JW. Lol. That’s how it typically works doesn’t it?

  106. Joe in Michigan Says:

The same chumps who said Benenoch would be good after he left the Bucs are saying VH3 will be good now. Okay, go follow his new team then.

  107. HeavyE Says:

    Scotty Miller should be next!!!!!!!

  108. HeavyE Says:

    Scotty Miller should be Next……

  109. fernando diaz Says:

here you go scouting reports allowed 16.5 yds LOL
WEAKNESSES Lean, wiry frame. Aggressive nature allows teams to bait him with double moves. Quicker than fast and doesn’t have closing speed to make mistakes underneath and still recover on top. Allowed 16.5 yards per completion this season. Scouts worry about his height outside. Big receivers will pose a challenge on the next level. Had his two worst games of the season in SEC Championship game against Alabama and Citrus Bowl against Michigan. Willingness to throw body around in run support could cause him to break down.

  110. Tbbucs3 Says:

I think Leonard Johnson was a better player than Vernon Hargreaves.

  111. Tbbucs3 Says:

So Jason Licht drafted a lesser version of Leonard Johnson with a 1st overall pick. Unbelievable.

  112. BucsFan727 Says:

Hey BA Peiraman has the leagues worst catch percentage at 32.1%. Where is the Accountability there? Watson should be starting. Your free agent pick up needs to go play for the XFL. He probably wont make there team.

  113. MTM Says:

So Hargreaves gets waived and Winbum is still on the roster. This organization is a dumpster fire.

  114. I’m a Tandyman used to be Bucs Fan Says:

813 Bucsboi, you hit the nail on the Head!! Smith was allowed to stay to long!! Hargreaves was allowed to stay to long!! Jason Gump has been allowed to stay to long!! Jay Miss has been allowed to stay to long and Bucco Bruce will be allowed to stay to long. All this is going to make the Bucs Cellar Dwellers to long!! If Im the Glazers I would be sick of looking at a GM that drafts a Dude in the first round and cuts him before the season is even over for nothing but a big payment to be made!!!!! Don’t get it!!

  115. Anonymous Says:

do you think marpet will serenade him goodbye with that lil banjo of his, as har-har packs up his ish ?

  116. Anonymous Says:

they’re going with bunting, dean and cd3…

    it’s been finalized
