Football Amnesia

Helps to forget.

“Forget the last play” is a refrain often heard among defensive backs. It is inevitable they will get burned at some point.

So in a way to help stay mentally in the game, they have to have short memories and forget the last play.

In his weekly sitdown with Dan Lucas of WFLA-TV Channel 8, Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians said that’s a great mentality possessed by America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.

Sunday at Atlanta, Jameis’ first pass was the ugliest pick you will ever see. It just about made Joe want to barf.

The rest of the game? Jameis was dynamite.

(Joe has no issue with the jump pass that went for a pick. What Joe did have an issue with was who Jameis threw that ball to. This Dare Ogunbowale has no business being on the roster much less being on the field much less being targeted with a jump pass. But, that’s another story for another day.)

Jameis was dynamite, Arians said, because Jameis forgets bad plays so quickly.

“That big long one to Chris [that went for a 71-yard touchdown], I think that got him going,” Arians said. “Jameis is one of those guys, he can go to the next play. A lot of those guys can’t. It just eats at them. He can just go to that next play and he played a whale of a game after that.”

Of course the cynic might say Jameis gets a lot of practice with forgetting bad plays. Duly noted.

What was different about the win over the Dixie Chicks? The Bucs’ secondary didn’t bend over every series as is too often the case.

Yes the Bucs’ Secondary played their best game yet: 13 PDs by our Secondary is awesome. But it started upfront … the beasts in the trenches & our LBs also played their best game yet, bringing relentless pressure on Matt Ryan. The 2 turnovers were great (including the 7 points off of the fumble recovery), but the rest was fantastic: 6 sacks & 13 QB Hits in 87 defensive snaps is amazing, as is the 6 TFLs. Makes it hard for ANY QB to sustain drives when under that much pressure.

Everyone’s healthy right now, and good coaching HAS made a difference. Now the goal is to sustain this improvement and develop CONSISTENCY for the next 5 games.

It starts in Jacksonville this coming Sunday. Bucs & Jags are BOTH 4-7 this year. Jaguars have lost the last 3 games, and given up OVER 200 yards rushing in each of those losses (216, 264, 219), plus they also gave up 285 yards rushing to the Panthers in another loss. Their pass defense has played (ranked #10) but their run defense has been awful (ranked #31). THAT’S their Achilles Heel.

  2. Bucsfanman Says:

Yeah, we need to forget about Atlanta and drive on up to J-ville, and punch the Jaguars in the face. We’re 4-7 but we can finish strong.
Draft position be damned! Lets roll some people up!

  3. runnerdoc Says:

I have no issue with the pass nor the player he threw the ball too. The issue was he didn’t keep his composure and throe the ball to the proper spot, as Dare did have space.

Jameis shows the ability to be both competitive and composed, both on the field and increasingly, in his interviews. Currently, his ceiling is fine, but his floor is far too low.

He as to get rid of the hot flashes that lead to rash throws.

The secondary has to come around and Jameis has to eliminate 1/3 of the ints to reach the playoffs next year, assuming the rest of the team performs at it’s current levels. The turnovers will get you beat. No way around it.

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it. ‘

There is a very thin line here….you don’t want Jameis to play scared…..

The Atlanta game is proof positive that a strong defense can win us games even with offensive mistakes…..

  5. #1bucfan Says:

Agreed joe why is 44 out there it’s ridiculous. Why is 19 getting the ball wen he barely makes the ketch now Scotty I do get he’s young an needs the experience cuz with his speed if he can develop you’ll have tirek hill on your hands an I’m ok with that. He’s needs the experience to help him with his route running an where to be on the field like not go out of bounds an then try an ketch the ball rookie mistake lol Brate an oj need more targets. I mean seriously if you got all these guys involved there’s no defense that could stop us if our oline blocks lol

  6. Ndog Says:

Play at least decent defense and have any running game and we will win games period. It has been proven and again I am not saying top 10 dominating defense or we have to have Emmit Smith type numbers but just decent balance on offense and a top 15-20 defense we will win games and a lot of them with everything being the same.

  7. Defense Rules Says:

Ooooh, there’s that word BALANCE again Ndog (one of my favorite words). I personally don’t think a Top-15 to 20 defense could win a SB though. But a Top-10 defense I’d buy (ours easily played like a Top-10 defense last Sunday IMO and they’ll improve even more I bet).

But then ask yourself Ndog: IF we had a Top-10 defense, and IF we had a solid running game, and IF we had a solid OLine that consistently played sound football, and IF we had 2 WRs named Evans & Godwin, and IF we had 2 TEs named OJ & Brate, THEN … does it take a $27-$30 mil a year QB to run it? And IF you paid your QB THAT MUCH, could you still afford all those other toys? And if not, how do you win CONSISTENTLY?

  8. 813bucboi Says:

    lets not get too “giddy”….

super happy we got the “W” but the falcons are a bad team that the saints and panthers slept on….

jags are another….lets consistently beat the teams we’re suppose to beat and continue to improve down the stretch….

IF we play like we did the rest of the year, JW, JPP and SHAQ will be back….JW has a couple more 3 or 4 TO games, bucs let him walk….

    GO BUCS!!!!

  9. DooshLaRue Says:

Hey Bruce, I got a big long one for you.

    ….And it’s not amnesia …….. it’s denial.

  10. Nemo14 Says:

I get that Jameis played really well the rest of the game, but no matter who is in the game, that jump pass was unacceptable. I don’t care if you had Randy Moss running that route, you can’t be that reckless.

  11. orlbucfan Says:

This defense is showing the signs of developing into another excellent one. Bucs are famous for them. Just look up the history. How do you think Dungy got into the HOF? Bowles’ krewe will be a different variation on that tune. 🙂 I am looking forward to the final 5 games. JW? I still don’t like BA not calling stuff like QB running plays, and no-huddle. JW is good at both, and it takes some pressure off the OLine.

  12. orlbucfan Says:

BTW, Dixie Chicks’ offense is NO cupcake!

  13. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Tampa Bay is the new Green Bay. Brett Favre all the way! (though Brett would never admit it)

  14. 813bucboi Says:

    orlbucfan

lol….falcons offense is sweeter than cupcakes…..

did you not see dirk in action while he was in tampa?….

we moved the ball great between the 20s but could never score….thats the same thing the falcons are dealing with now….their offense is great in yardage but lousy at scoring points…..

dirks offense is outdated and simple….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  15. SB Says:

What was different about the win over the Dixie Chicks? The Bucs’ secondary didn’t bend over every series as is too often the case.

    ……………………..

Yeah, as usual don’t point out the fact that they had to only play TWO extra possessions this time due to turnovers. They had to play TEN extra possessions in just TWO games a few weeks ago.

  16. whaaatttsss uuuup Says:

you have no issue with Winston jumping in the air to throw A HORRIBLE PASS to dare and you blame the running back and talk crap about him?? dare has done some really good things and blocks better than any of them! yeah you can point to one or 2 plays where he got blown up but i can do that with anyone…. this man crush with you and Winston has gotten a little weird man!! when you are blaming the fact dare was on the field for that stupid brain dead pass then you have a problem and it is called denial….the first step to fixing a problem is admit you have one! … there are PLENTY of QBs in the league who put up good numbers without the turn overs!! just because Winston throws a few TDs doesn’t excuse the horrible play before that … if they were playing a good team Winston would have thrown the game away in the first 10 minutes!!! really think about that for a sec!! he threw 2 picks to basically start the game!! imagine that was against the saints or any other good team… the game is over right there and then!!!!

  17. unbelievable Says:

The defense played outstanding J0e, give credit where credit is due. The offense did a nice job rebounding after a bad start.

  18. D-Rome Says:

I think in Jay-Miss’ case having a short memory on all of his fumbles and interceptions is a big reason why he continues to be a turnover machine. He has and will continue to play the **exact** same way regardless of what happened last play, last drive, last game, last season, or his past career. It’s a big reason why the Bucs have had a losing record during his career. The Pollyannas out there think that by year six he’s going to turn it around and stop turning the ball over. It’s not going to happen. If you want Jay-Miss back then you want league leading turnovers and losing. Simple as that.

  19. whats the bucs plan 2020 Says:

he thru a pick on the first play just so he could get it out of his system….. resign him DEFINETLY 100 MILLION DOLLAR MAN yes sir …. why wait ??!! lmao
