Devin White Underrated?

November 29th, 2019

Overlooked?

Since seemingly healed from a minor knee injury that sidelined him for 3 1/2 games early this season, it sure seems like Bucs rookie middle linebacker Devin White has turned the corner.

Sure, he still needs work on his pass defense. But after being virtually invisible in the early going, White has come on strong.

In the past four games, White has 39 tackles and 2.5 sacks. That’s a bunch more than fellow rookie inside linebacker Devin Bush of the Steelers, who has 20 tackles in the past four games with one forced fumble and no sacks in his last four games.

Now over at CBSSports.com, Josh Edwards has weekly rookie power rankings, Nos. 1-15. And it is hard to argue with his top-15.

But nowhere can you find White.

Bush is ranked No. 5, which begs the question, if this is a weekly poll, how can a guy be ranked so high when another rookie at the same position is much more productive?

Or is it simply White isn’t getting enough run because the Bucs are so lousy and are not playing any nationally televised games? (Neither is Josh Allen, but he is ranked No. 3.)

Or is this simply a product of White struggling for so long and finally turning it on just as the Bucs reached the midway point of the season?

Why would anyone from the Bucs “defense” be ranked anywhere?

Haven’t been good on defense since Schiano and Revis and a 4 week span in 2016.

  2. Bigbucs1 Says:

Doesn’t matter – these are individual aculeates- white has been balling and has better stats than all of them over the span that he’s been on the field- redskins and jags defense have not been lights out either – brian burns is also ahead of him and hasn’t done jack

I been watching White very closely and the difference in his play is extremely noticable…….I can give a rats ass less where somebody ranks him(sucks for White not to get recognized).

He is playing much faster right now then he was. Looks like he is reading the plays much better. He’s getting better and the splash plays are coming!!

Was a play last week on a short-to-go situation and they tryed to hit the edge and White ripped down the line, shedding blocks and cleaned up Gholstons tackle……..That was an elite freaking play and it prevented points……..Haven’t seen any of these players on this guys Top 15 list. Wonder how many elite plays they’re making?

Wonder where this guy would rank Dean based on week to week? Maybe not cracking Top 15, but let me guess what his thought would be……..Whose Dean?

  4. Tampabuscsbro Says:

Honestly all these network rankings whether they be mock draft, better rookie, best whatever unit. It is all a crapshoot some sports journalist probably is making it up as they go. all that matters is white is producing for us.

  5. tmaxcon Says:

White will be a very good back up for 5 to 6 years for the next regime. Not an impact player by any stretch therefore a bad pick at 5.

  6. AwShbucs Says:

The dude literally just had a 10 tackle 2 sack game… yup dudes a back up just like Derrick Brooks the first ballot Hall of Famer was a glorified backup huh Tmax?

    “LSU vs LSU

    White vs Fournette

Not gonna lie, I doubted this kid and am actually impressed by his
    Motor and aggressive play.

Guys arms are huge AF seems like a wrecker.

Still is a failure until “Trash” Licht can grab a superstar EDGE like BOSA type.

    DE is more valuable.

  9. PragueBucsFan Says:

Last week was Bucs Best defensive performance since Seattle 2016. The DBs were contesteing every catch and the DL was dominant. Is this the real Bucs defense? Are the youngsters finally getting Todd Boles scheme? Dean, Davis, Edwards, SMB, theses guys are fast, physical its all about knowing what they are doing and then the talent will take over. Keep this D line together. Hopefully better times ahead soon Bucs fans.

  10. Defense Rules Says:

PragueBucsFan … Good to see that someone ‘gets it’. It takes time for guys to learn how to ‘play nice together’. Keep this defense together, add some better depth & we’ll have a Top-10 defense next year.

Tmaxcon … You continue to amaze me. Just when I think you’ve hit rock bottom with your comments, you keep digging & go deeper. It’s actually quite impressive. Nothing pertinent whatsoever & usually shows your obvious ‘disdain for all things Bucs’, but impressive nonetheless.

Its picks like these that could turn public opinion of Highway to Hella GM
and alleged alter ego/author J Licht ,from village idiot to competent NFL exec..
The obvious #1 QB pick will rage on until seasons end when half of Bucs nation will be overturning cars and setting dumpsters ablaze while another crawls outta the post apocalyptic ruins of 3 coaching staffs 100+ turnovers and less than 30 wins …BUT ..you CANNOT debate the impact of Licht’s selections albeit slow starters like D White who looks better every week..As solid and MVP worthy Evans is GODWIN is reaching top 10 receiver territory ..Vita V is an animal ..the o line newbies Marpet and Kappa votes still out ..ROJO playing like he’s deserving an nfl jersey .Barrett was the steal of century ..theres pieces of what kinds resembles a respectable NFL team ..

  12. ModHairKen Says:

He’s having a much bigger impact as a rookie than Sapp did. And he is nowhere near the cancer Sapp was.

  13. Bucsfan951 Says:

Bucs should have taken Allen instead of White smh

There are days when I want Jameis sent back to the middle ages to be drawn and quartered. At the moment —I am proud of his effort–even though we have been attacking him non stop with horrible remarks–he is still showing great internal fortitude. With a rock solid run game and defense Jameis can and will lead us to the promised land.

“White will be a very good back up for 5 to 6 years for the next regime. Not an impact player by any stretch therefore a bad pick at 5. ”

Amazing how you always seem to target black players.

  17. SB Says:

Why would you go there Bonzai? You are better than that man.

Besides, she is an equal opportunity hater.

  18. Bobby Says:

Wow! Tmaxcon sure posts some stupid comments. Why is it that guys with little football knowledge think they know the most?

  19. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    Bonzai,

A majority of NFL players happen to be black.

Also, i am pretty sure T.Max’s fave player is Jameis.

Alot of his comments tick me off (and he is ok with that lol)… but i certainly dont think they are about color.

As far as Devin White… he is playing faster and faster. It is fun to watch, and the sky is the limit.
