Awareness Saved Game

November 11th, 2019

Heads up play.

The eyes can tell all sorts of stories. And eyes told Bucs corner Jamel Dean he had a shot to save the game.

The Cardinals had the ball late and led by four points. They were marching deep inside Bucs territory and looked to be about to take a two-score lead with less than four minutes left.

Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray dropped back to pass, floated to his left and unloaded the ball toward the right sideline. Murray thought he was throwing the ball away and after the game remarked he thought there was “no way in hell” the ball would get picked.

But Dean had been watching the eyes of both Murray and his receivers, so he told Joe after the game, and that tipped him off a pass to the right side, to Dean’s left, was coming. So Dean positioned himself where he might get a jump on a pass if it came.

“I kind of knew that — receivers were kind of looking over there,” Dean said. “So I figured that’s about right where [Murray] was going to go. He was looking over there and I was aiming for that spot.

“When I saw that bad ball that Kyler threw, I knew there was an opportunity to undercut [the receiver].”

That’s some smart football right there. That’s knowing your surroundings and trying to detect a read or a tell in your opponent.

As it turned out, a smart play saved the day for the Bucs.

    He’ll come around

  3. Jean Lafitte Says:

How about LVD playing inspired football? He’s truly the defenses captain.

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Things just aren’t easy for us…..they rarely are…..look at the Carolina & Rams win…..and now the Arizona squeaker……..
Just once, I’d like a no-doubt-about-it win to relax and enjoy…..

  5. zzbuc Says:

Happy for the kid!!! He deserved it after a bad Seahwaks game!!!
Hope he gets better game by game.
And very sick to have VHII in the team for the end of the season….
Can stand players with lack of effort…Hope Licht learns from this……..

  6. Doctor Stroud Says:

Congratulations, Mr. Dean! Game ball should go to you and LVD. Just keep learning because Drew Brees is coming to town and will most assuredly keep throwing your way.

  7. Alanbucsfan Says:

    A smart play = A turnover

  8. Jean Lafitte Says:

next game they should double Michael Thomas just like Atlanta did.

  9. Robert Says:

    A dumb play= A turnover

who has the disproportionate amount of dumb plays on this team? CUT HIM!

  10. SCBucsFan Says:

He interfered. If he makes the play again 9 out of 10 times he gets flagged.

Excellence comes from a lot of repetition, watching tape and communication. We need for all phases of this team to work at becoming excellent at their part of the team.
What has been missing is the complimentary football. With these coaches, and buy in from the players, it is possible for them to grow into excellence. Maybe not by next weekend, but it is nice to have goals.
Players need to demand more from themselves first, then from each other.

Great play by dean….he displayed the type of mental toughness you want from a young player…

    GO BUCS

dude what’s up with your man loafing… do you have any excuses??? was it the system… did the coach tell him to loaf? you have made some ridiculous statements defending the little fella. I am eager to here your justification for quitting on your team…

  14. SB Says:

Crazy stat: We played the Worst Pass D in the league yesterday. Yes even worse than ours.
Neither ME13 or CG12 were in the top ten of WRs yesterday FF wise.
BOTH are top 8 FF WRs for the entire Year, yet Neither were yesterday against the worst Pass D in the league.
“Things that make you go hmmm.”

Also on topic I must admit that I was wrong in trying to roast the kid last week.
    My bad.
He really bounced back this week and shows that he probably has a lot of growth potential.
Way to go kid. Keep it up PLEASE!!

SCbucsfan – I’ll take aggressive in play penalties (including CD back to back PI, the 2nd was was bs) over what we have seen the last few years out of our secondary.

    In BA I Trust!

I told ya’ll he showed a lot of positive signs in the loss to Seattle.

    He’s got instincts.

  21. cmurda Says:

SB. Don’t ever apologize for calling a player out even if said player is much better than you gave him credit for. I’m the King of calling players out mid-game and they usually respond the very next snap with a nice play. We gotta call it like we see it. Dean deserved to be called out for the Seahawks game. He also deserves a ton of love for having the mental fortitude to bounce back and for displaying his great speed and ability to cover against the Cards. I love everything about this kid from his attitude to his desire to be better.

  22. cmurda Says:

I disagree SCbucsfan. Because Dean saw the ball and was making a play directly for the ball, he has as much right to go after the ball as the receiver. I didn’t think that the INT was a PI on Dean unless you are talking about a different play. Actually, I retract my comment. I used to think I knew what PI is but I no longer have any clue what PI is and neither does the NFL or it’s terrible refs. BRING BACK ED HERCULES!

  23. Nptbuc Says:

SCbucfan. You are critical that he MAY have got a PI? Are you a “ fan” or a Russian bot? In case you have followed any of the Bucs game this year you HAVE to note how silly you sound. The guy was IN THE SAME TV FRAME AS THE RECIEVER! How many times have you even seen that this year? I was ecstatic! Guys challenging passes is what we need to see consistently. As long as it isn’t a stupid penalty when called, I will take it. That’s called a huge improvement over being out of the frame and then running 5 yards behind him down the field. They are young back there. Life will get better. Give the guy props when he deserves them.

  24. geno711 Says:

PFF grades out. Dean had the highest defensive grade in the NFL in their scoring system of 95.5 this last Sunday.

  25. stpetebucsfan Says:

It may be too late but it’s beginning to look like the Who’s “The Kids Are Alright”.

I count at least five young guys counting our safeties.

    VHG is gone…Ryan Smith?

  26. Buccfan37 Says:

Quickest fan opinion of a Bucs player move from the outhouse to the penthouse I’ve seen yet.

  27. Fire the fans Says:

The sad part is next week he will get burnt in the first quarter and all of a sudden everyone will just be hammering him again. These “fans” float whichever way the wind blows

  28. ou812 Says:
