Sinking Justin Watson?

October 5th, 2019

Second-year receiver Justin Watson, the big, strong, fast cat out of the University of Pennsylvania, caught his first ball of the season last Sunday.

But it seems he might be sinking fast on the Tampa Bay depth chart.

Breshad Perriman, the Bucs’ No. 3 receiver (3 catches and 1 dropped touchdown), is out for Sunday’s game with a hamstring injury and Bucco Bruce Arians said yesterday that Bobo Wilson and rookie Scotty Miller would share Perriman’s snaps.

Hmmmmm.

Watson had a rough training camp and Arians wouldn’t name him the No. 4 receiver when asked back in August. Arians likes receivers who can block and are versatile. Watson fits that mold but Joe supposes the fresh Wilson-Miller announcement means Arians isn’t seeing what he wants from Watson in practice.

Still, Watson should see the field a little bit and that No. 4 receiver gig — and No. 3 with Perriman’s health issue — remains up for grabs.

I do not get why Bobo Wilson is still on this team.

  4. Hodad Says:

I don’t know who Miller is going to block? I’ll have to see it to believe it. Have to see him even make a catch in a real game, and take a hit. Doesn’t surprise me Bobo is ahead of both of them. Him, and JW have been together for years, and he seems to make catches when called on.

  5. Smashsquatch Says:

So you’re suggesting Watson can’t block as well as Scotty Miller or Bobo? I doubt that’s the case here. I suspect Watson is reserved to back up a more important role (Godwin) and Miller/Wilson have always been slated to replace Perriman’s position which is for taking the lid off the D.

  6. J Says:

Hodad, you ever watch Cole Beasley play? I’ve never seen him block either, which doesn’t mean he hasn’t. Miller is bigger than Beasley by the way.

Miller might have a big game.

  7. Jean Lafitte Says:

Or maybe the coach doesn’t see him in the slot role. Maybe the smaller and quicker Wilson or Miller are a better fit. Maybe Watson is seen more as a flanker so if Evans goes down he would likely replace Evans.

  8. buc15 Says:

Bobo is an upgrade over Perriman anyway. He just needs more playing time

  9. dmatt Says:

I’ve watched Scotty Miller n his speed is off the charts. Reminds me of DJax without the attitude.

  10. Dapostman Says:

On the pass where Mike Evans hurt his hand Scotty Miller was behind two Rams but Winston was hit as he released it. He was going to Miller. Miller is going to replace MeSean on the couple of long tosses every game. Right now Watson, Wilson and Miller all have strengths and weaknesses. I see Arians and Leftwich using each one to their strength .

We need speed ! Need that go route runner

  12. #1bucsfan Says:

I think Bobo is more elusive an agile but Watson seems to more upside get him out there

  13. BucInCLE Says:

I definitely like Watson over Bobo. I think this staff wants to see exactly what they have in Miller since he missed a lot of time. They probably feel like they know what they have in Watson. It could be a matter of Bobo being a better matchup against the saints mixed with them forcing Miller in there to get him on tape.

Also, I’ve always felt like Jameis performs better with average-below average receivers. Not sure if that’s true, but he seems to be more comfortable elevating the play of guys. Brate, Hump, Shepard, etc. It seems he develops chemistry easily with underdog players. Would love to see Hudson get some snaps because he’s cut from that same cloth. Would also like to see them get creative with OJ like Sean Payton did with Jimmy Graham.

  14. SOEbuc Says:

I’m down for BoBo on returns and and #4 WR but Miller has one target and zero catches in the regular season compared to Watson one catch for 13 yards. Perriman has jello hands.

Totally agree with Hodad. Godwin has shown how important WR blocking down field is important. Watson has all the abilities to be a good blocking WR and does have hands.

Brought in Miller because they thought he was the next Hump. Next DeShaun Jackson??? “Riiiiiiiiiiight”- Dr. Evil.

  15. SOEbuc Says:

Watson should’ve had so many more reps over Perriman. Joke. He’s boss tackler on ST if they aren’t going to use him on offense.

  16. unbelievable Says:

    @Bonzai

Same. Bobo has shown nothing as a returner or a receiver. Maybe he’s good at blocking? Doesn’t seem to be a factor on special teams either.

Time for Watson to step up!

  17. TampaTown Says:

Don’t know what happened here. Maybe all the drops. I still think he’s a better option than Bobo. I’m rooting for Watson.

  18. Darin Says:

Perriman definitely looked a bit lost out there. No fluidity in his routes. Not great hands either. He looks the part of a one trick pony but that trick hasnt hit yet. I hope Miller goes off cuz Perriman as a 3 isnt good. Bobo is an upgrade but not by a bunch. Go bucs

  19. AlteredEgo Say: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

Watson’s only issue as a NFL WR is that Evans and Goodwin are on the roster ahead of him playing the same role in the offense. Bobo and Miller play different roles in the offense so they may get more PT

  20. B-Rad Says:

Non issue . I’d be more wondering why the Bucs can’t get Howard going . This is the type of game that he should be able to carry the offense. I get the feeling NO might be able to keep our receivers in check so it’s time to show the nfl we have weapons everywhere and allow Howard to carry the offense ..

  21. JimmyJack Says:

I’m glad BoBo gets the look and he gotta put up or shut up right now. He has been treading water for too long time. This is a chance for him to finally make a real impact or otherwise be a pure footnote to Bucs & NFL history.

Watson deserves to ride the pine. He aren’t done nothing as a Buccaneer. Don’t know how much time he thinks he needs but the window only stays open for so long in this league……If he don’t take this setback as an opportunity to ratchet it up then it likely won’t never happen…..I will be rooting for him with the next chanse he gets.

Until then I’m rooting for BoBo and for Miller. One of them 2 has a golden opportunity to be a major and future piese to this team. The pressure is on which makes it very exciting as a fan.

Time to a shine baby!!!! To both BoBo and Miller……And I’m looking at BoBo first. He been around for a while. If he aren’t got it now little suggest he ever will. Time to earn your way or move on. Might sound cold but the NFL waits for no man.. and thats a fact, Jack.

  22. m0j0 Says:

Waton’s skills translate more to the outside but with Evans and Godwin manning those positions, they are looking at Bobo and Scotty as slot guys who can get open and move the chains, with the versatility to kick outside if need be and win with speed, more so with Scotty than Bobo.

  23. JimmyJack Says:

Altered & B-Rad I disagree that this is a none issue.

I understand that our #3 WR has not been a big issue because Evans & Godwin have been destroying defenses…………But I will ask you why it is OK for our #3 WR to have almost no impact on Gameday whatsoever?…..Look up Perrimans numbers. It’s disgraceful.

If you ask me this team is begging for a 3rd wide receiver to make plays. So far we have nothing behind our Top 2 that can do anything.

Godwin and Mike are making life very easy for our 3rd option yet we have gotten nothing from that spot. This may be all well and good right now but against stingy defenses where points are at a premium we will need #3

When we look back at 55 points on the scoreboard it stand to reason that out third wideout would be able to contribute in a game like that …yet we got next to nothing(the one catch Watson made was key).

Yes, our TEs are above average and they defientally warrant some playing time because of it but why should we not ask the same standard of our #3 …..because right now our #3 has done little to help this team. Please correct me if I’m wrong cause I just hadent saw it. …I had not saw Bobo do nothing, I had not saw Perriman do nothing, I had not saw Miller do nothing & I had not saw Watson fo nothing.

Why are these guys even on the field if they can’t make plays?

In a unrelated note I’d like to admitt I was totally wrong about Anthony Auclair & am stoked he is on this team……Watching back on the games Auclair is a major force blocking. He has completely washed out defenders all season long and looks stronger then anybody he faces. And I’m pretty sure he has not committed a single pentalty at all which was my biggest grief. In mine opinion Auclair is one of the most unsung heris on this team and quickly becoming one of my favorite Bucs!!!

  24. JimmyJack Says:

Mojo..,….only going by Bruce’s comments but I though Godwin was playing from the slot for many plays….. I know I have saw him throw many great blocks(freaking kudos godwin) which seems to fall in line with playing slot.

Haven’t paid much mind to where Chris lines up…..inside or out……will try to pay more attention this week. There is a major difference between the two roles

  25. BucEmUp Says:

Zero reason why we are not seeing more two.tight end.sets out there..Have brate and Howard eating up attention, godwin and evans going deep with rojo and miller for the short routes getting yac. Why is miller on the active roster if he isnt contributing. I hope he shows up tomorrow

  26. D1 Says:

    Bucemup,

I agree. Put your playmakers on the field at the same time. Why that hasn’t happened is a question the Joe’s should ask.

  27. Figures Says:

    BOBO SUCKS.

  28. Figures Says:

    @jimmyjack

Your FSU jock strap is showing.

You say Justin Watson hasn’t done anything and how much time does he think he needs. Drafted 2018. Has way more talent than Bobo and everyone except FSU ers know it.

Bobo Wilson drafted 2017 lol. He’s been here longer yet you question the “time” Watson needs? How much time does Dumbo think he needs?

Bobo has caught 6 passes in the NFL lol. Has no clue on how to return kicks either. He’s there by default not talent. Talk about not doing anything lol. He’s just a warm body. Bobo will never be an important “piece” on this team no matter how much your FSU ness wants him too.

    You homers are stupid.

  29. Figures Says:

    @jimmyjack

Lmao Bobo will never ever be an “important” piece on this team.
Dude is trash and everyone except FSU ers know it. Good lord lol.

  30. Figures Says:

    @jimmyjack

Bobo has been here longer than Watson yet you question how much “time” does Watson need and the window doesn’t stay open long lol. Hilarious lol.

You say Watson has done nothing yet talk up a dude with 6 NFL catches and can’t return kicks worth a crap lol. Bobo is an empty jersey.

    Your FSU bias is showing

  31. David Says:

That is surprising. His rookie year he showed signs of being Chris Godwin light

  32. JimmyJack Says:

Figures…I do not even follow college ball TYVM. I just happen to like BoBo because he has worked hard enough to stick on this roster for quite a few years.

He has not been inserted into that many games but I do recall him making a few plays here in there when called upon.

Hey maybe I’m wrong and maybe I just confused him with receivers like Martino and giving BoBo credit he don’t deserve. If I did apologies but not gonna sweat it. Happens.

Either way my comment still holds merit. As I said it’s put up or shut up time for BooBoo first and foremost. He has been around long enough to be held to that standard………I may have been harsh on Watson saying he deserves to ride the pine but I did not put the standard on him that he needs to put up or shut up like BoBo…….I just do happen to believe that a young player like Watson can learn a cold hard lesson from losing….I believe it to be a motivating factor for a young developing player like him.

With BoBo I do not think motivational coaching tactics should be at play. He been a pro for too long of time. Either show us why you deserve a roster spot or get off the team. Watson his by a different stadard in mine opinion……He is still young with more potential. I could easily see how him getting benched can be beneficial. With BoBo not so much. He us what he is at this point.

But hey if you wanna lable me as a Gator fan to make it easier to mock my opinion I’m game.

    CHOMP CHOMP Baybee!!

  35. Brandon Says:

Nothing to see here. The 3rd WR in the Arians offense is always a speed guy, Perriman, Wilson, Miller fill that role. So did John Brown in AZ. Watson is the primary backup to Godwin and Evans.

  36. Brandon Says:

JimmyJack “I had not saw Perriman do nothing”

    Please STFU.
