“No.”

Apparently NFL teams have reached out to Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht.

And these teams need tight ends. And it seems the conversation begins something like this:

Hey Jason, howyadoing? You really need to come to [insert city] sometime on your bye week. We’ve got a great new craft brewery. You know the Glazers will spring for it. Anyway, I need a tight end. Since you’re not using O.J. Howard, you want to move him? I can give you a fullback who blocks better than him.

“No.”

OK. Hey, that Cam Brate fella. Used to catch a lot of touchdowns from Jameis. You know, Jameis may like throwing to Brate almost as much as he likes throwing to other teams. Brate’s numbers are way down. How about I take him off your hands for you? Save ‘ya some money. Whattayasay?

“No.”

That’s the word from Albert Breer of theMMQB.com. Yesterday in his Monday Morning Quarterback column, Breer claims teams are calling Licht trying to pry loose a tight end before the Oct. 29 trade deadline.

Per Breer, those calls have been dead ends.

And teams that have called the Bucs about Howard (Tampa also has Cameron Brate at the position) have been met with a flat “no.” Both guys are under contract for multiple years beyond this one.

Joe can see why Licht is turning down trade offers for his tight ends. Joe just wishes Bucs offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich would use these guys more and stop with the love affair for two receivers who are glorified bubble players, Scotty Miller and Bobo Wilson.

Miller is not a matchup problem for a pylon. Wilson is so, so streaky.

Given Howard’s cheap salary (he’s still under his rookie contract), Joe just doesn’t get why so many Bucs fans are eager to move him.

  1. TDTB Says:

Howard is on a rookie contract, so he should definitely turn down any offers. Brate however, is not. If he’s not pursuing a opportunity to cut a large chunk of salary cap by trading away a seldom used player Licht needs to be fired.

  2. Hodad Says:

Licht is just like Jameis, slow at processing information. He’d rather take a sack then throw the ball away. Just as well he does nothing while the season slowly goes down the drain. Any move he makes would only be the wrong one, better he sits in the dark, and sucks his thumb. Let the new GM make those tough decisions, if the Glazers ever wake up, and actually hire a GM who knows what he’s doing.

  3. richbucsfan Says:

This team is so mismanaged. Keep the TEs. Rebuild the Oline, Dline, LBs, CBs, Safety. The only thing I can see is that the owners allow this to keep on. It’s a cash cow and they aren’t going to let go of it. They won’t sell. Would you? Seriously, if you could own an NFL franchise and make millions on it year after year without doing much and not winning much, would you give it up? Hardly. I hear on this site that the Glazers want to win, that they are big on winning. Ok, then how can they allow this clown show to continue without intervening? How can they allow this to continue and extend the contract of the one who has put together this ragtag bunch of incompetents? Nah, this is strictly a money deal. Trust me, it’s all about the profit. Winning? Nah, just a fantasy. Sad thing is the fan base keep shelling out money, keeps filling the seats, and keeps moaning. When the fan base dwindles to 10,000 or less then perhaps the owners will do something…perhaps.

  4. Bob in Valrico Says:

Good point Joe, Licht should have drafted an O lineman with Miller’s draft spot,IMO. We now have two journeyman lineman on the right side that probably helped Jameis become unglued last week. Auclaire is probably the best blocker
and we should probably use him in extra protection for the right side.

Hump was so good was that he was tough and well chiseled. Scotty Miller is not that guy or shown he has the skills to make the kind of plays DJax has in his career.

  5. Bruce Blahak Says:

Bobo is rotten…it was a matter of time before the mistakes happened…careless with the ball. FSU connection can find another home

  6. Dom>Licht Says:

We can not carry Brates salary next year. With the 35 mill we are paying this horrible O-Line. Jamies 30 mill hit, 7 mill for a TE we are not even using is ridiculous. Wake up Jason!

  7. BucEmUp Says:

Im telling you…..SINCE BEFORE THE FIRST SNAP I CALLED THIS CRAP!!!!

Its leftwich. The entire offense looks dead and Ive been calling 80 %of every play before the ball is snapped. If I can do that Im pretty sure nfl defneses can as well.

    Leftwich=Mike Smith

  8. Bucsfanman Says:

Ok, and what happened when OJ got some passes thrown his way? Is this the 1st game we’ve seen this? Oh, and how many complete seasons has he played?
He was a luxury pick to begin with. Now, he can’t catch. If we can get a competent OL or DB for him, I’d do it in a heartbeat.
    EVERYONE can be replaced.

  9. Buc believer Says:

Licht is a special needs kid in a Ivy League school. He is in way over his head.

  10. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    I’ll say it again.

Bruce Arians has never ran a two tight-end offense.
It’s a luxury a 2-4 teams with holes in other key areas can’t afford.

Move Cameron Brate + Vernon Hargreaves + Additional Draft compensation for prospects to sure up deficiencies in other key areas.

    It’s really that simple.

Clearly this GM LUV’s to Harbor his drafted picks.
Unfortunately it’s to the detriment of our team in most cases.

  11. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

Jason Lite doesn’t want to trade either because he’d be embarrassed when either TE’s blows up the NFL playing with a real QB….

  12. AKickInTheBucNuts Says:

It’s because Glazers said it’s a great sign when you give a 2nd contract to your draft picks.

So, LightBulb thinks if he keeps signing his draft picks, the Glazers will think he’s doing a great job and will ignore his pathetic W/L record.

  13. 99.97.92.55.47.40.28.20.7 Says:

Where’s Fitzpatrick when you need him?

  14. Defense Rules Says:

LUVMYBUCS … You nailed it. Jason Lichtweight protects HIS draft picks to the detriment of our team in most cases. He’s been here for SIX drafts now. Even assuming that Lovie controlled the first & that BA controlled this last one, that’s FOUR DRAFTS in-between that JL is responsible for. The problem is that we just don’t have ENOUGH to show for it.

That doesn’t at all mean, however, that this team is devoid of talent. Quite the contrary IMO. We’ve got some FAs who are really contributing right now … guys like Suh, Nassib, Barrett. Some other FAs like Allen & Minter have become solid depth it looks like. This last draft class is just ROOKIES, and will make rookie mistakes, guaranteed. We’re having to play way too many of them on the field at any one time, especially in the Secondary. That’s a mammoth learning curve for any one player; for multiple ‘newbies’ on the field simultaneously it’s an invitation to disaster. But we have no choice at this point … we lack VETERAN PRESENCE back there.

Interesting (to me at least) that our OFFENSE is predominantly HOME-GROWN during JL’s reign, and yet it’s still up-and-down. Very INCONSISTENT, and yes in a number of ways it’s REGRESSING. IMO it starts in THE TRENCHES, then moves to your QB, then on to your WEAPONS. Our OLine is a hot mess … it lacks talent; it lacks depth; and most of all it lacks LEADERSHIP. Byron Leftwich & the offensive coaches are in way over their heads it looks like. The results on the field speak for themselves. He needs to be either ‘more heavily mentored’ or replaced. If BA can’t FIX THIS OFFENSE, he stands a good chance of losing this team by season’s end.

No idea what the rest of this season has in store for us, but I’d love to see this team at least lay the foundation for moving forward. Let’s make good & sure that we KNOW what we can build on for the future. Those who won’t be part of that TEAM next year, for whatever reason, should be replaced or at least sit down the rest of the season unless injuries dictate their use. No sense wasting valuable game time training them up.

  15. Bob in Valrico Says:

I will say that some of O J’s weaknesses have been exposed.
He has struggled to adjust to some of Jameis’ less than perfect passes. He also has fumbled twice so far in his career across the middle. You want a sure handed
receiver for this duty. and at this point OJ has not shown that.

  16. Buczilla Says:

I’m guessing that teams are lowballing Licht and offering no more than a 3rd rounder for either Howard or Brate. If Licht were worth a damn at drafting I’d take a 2 and a 3 for either one of them. Hopefully our next offensive coordinator can figure out how to use them…

  17. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    DR.

    Well said, and I agree.

  18. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

I don’t know how this is possible. All offseason posters were saying the coaches would turn the team into winners. Fans paying attn knew that wasn’t going to happen because Licht has failed miserably as a GM. Glazers should be fire for that!

  19. SickofLosing Says:

OJ has way more potential than Brate. Don’t get me wrong, I think Brate is a TD machine but they clearly aren’t using him. BoBo should be cut immediately, doubt he would make any other roster. Bucs should use Brate in the slot with OJ on the line. This would create all sorts of match up problems for defenses. If not then you have to trade one of the tight ends. No sense in payng that much cap space to an unused asset.

  20. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We still have 10 games left in the season…..we aren’t doing well but we still have a shot at the playoffs…..(long shot)..

If we trade Brate, it should be for a player we need……good CB, RT….

Under no circumstances should we trade OJ Howard this year….

  21. JA Says:

Jameis will need 13 interceptions in his next two games to match Peyton Manning’s first 64 game total of 81.
In those first 64 games Manning’s Colts had a record of 3-13, 13-3, 10-6 and 6-10. That’s two very good seasons sandwiched between two bad.
Granted, most QB’s dink and dunk these days compared to Manning’s early career when he mostly threw downfield. The Bucs try to mimic the same downfield game without pass protection.
    Why?
In a league where teams are constantly using RB’s receivers, why do the Bucs prefer this anachronistic approach to offense. When a QB is constantly pressured, why not dump it off to a RB?
We did that zero times against the Panthers.
Not apologizing for Jameis as he often doesn’t respond well under pressure, but he is getting killed waiting for long routes to develop.
I don’t think this team can spell “screen pass.”
Christian McCaffrey has 35 receptions in 2019 for an average of 8.7 a catch. Ronald Jones has 5 receptions for an average of 18.4 a catch.
    USE HIM!!!!
I’m tired of watching opposing QB’s have career games against us and watching the same team’s DL look like a new lawnmower as they cut through our OL.
Back to the topic … Trade Brate if you can get anything of value in return. If not, keep him.

  22. George Rauh Says:

Trade Brate and VH3 to the Cardinals for Petererson. Problem solved

  24. Nick Says:

Given Howard’s cheap salary (he’s still under his rookie contract), Joe just doesn’t get why so many Bucs fans are eager to move him.

@JOE! He is injury prone, can’t catch a pass, and when he does he can’t hold on to the ball. Did I mention, he can’t block ????

  25. adam from ny Says:

you can probably make a trade for ryan fitzpatrick right now…

and no i am not kidding…

    let’s go get fitzy !!

    it will be wild !!

the whole league and media will go crazy…

  26. lowercaseg Says:

Oj drops passes brate catches everything. Trade oj.

  27. Bird Says:

Sorry but Hargreaves has no value right now

  28. LUVMYBUCS Says:

I would CB Vernon Hargreaves + Draft Compensation for CB William Jackson III

    **Example:

    Relinquish: Buccaneers
    • CB Vernon Hargreaves (4,511,076)
    • Dead $ Incurred: $2,127,759
    • Cap $ Saved: $2,383,317

    Receive: Bengals
    • CB William Jackson (1,773,497)
    • Acquired Cap $: (1,773,497)

    Total Trade Savings: $609,820

  29. LUVMYBUCS Says:

I would move CB Vernon Hargreaves + Draft Compensation for CB William Jackson III

  30. BigMacAttack Says:

Meanwhile Tom Brady makes around $15 million and you’re going pay Jameis what???

  31. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Actually Big Mac you make a good point. Jameis has hurt himself so can probably be signed for around $10M a year long term. As long as that allowed per collective bargaining, Jameis could get a contract on the very low end of what QBs make.

  32. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

Trade Brate to Pats for slot corner Jonathon Jones(Top 3 in NFL) and 4th rounder in 2020. This unfortunately will not happen due to Licht Brain not having what it takes as a GM.
JA is right on target , where are the flares or screens to Jones?????? For that matter , a draw play or shovel pass is also effective , where are those plays?????
BA prolly regretting his unretirement about now………………………………

  33. BigMacAttack Says:

I don’t think the problem is the TE’s and WR’s. You have have a half injured, overpaid O line that has again forgot how to block. And the alleged QB for the team is a train wreck. Jameis needs to play Baseball. He started his career ok but it’s back to bad decisions and worse play. Get rid of Jameis if you want to win. Unfortunately his trade value is probably close to zero.

  34. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Or Since the Rams have recently lost CB Aqib Talib
Trade CB Vernon Hargreaves for Rookie RT/LT Bobby Evans

    Relinquish: Buccaneers
    • CB Vernon Hargreaves (4,511,076)
    • Dead $ Incurred: $2,127,759
    • Cap $ Saved: $2,383,317

    Receive: Rams
    • RT/LT Bobby Evans ($495,000)
    • Acquired Cap $: $495,000

    Total Trade Savings: $1,888,317

  35. Figures Says:

    Bad offensive scheme.

Leftwich is in over his head and has no idea how to use his best players. Throwing to Bobo and Scotty Miller tells me all I need to know about this scheme.

BA the “QB whisperer” isn’t even calling plays. He’s only here for a paycheck.

  36. LUVMYBUCS Says:

  38. Allbuccedup Says:

    Licht is an idiot.

  39. deuceswild78 Says:

I know Jacksonville needs a TE bad…. package brate and Hargreaves with a draft pick and bring Ramsey here. Its a no brainer which means it will never happen

  40. Ate one tree Says:

Oj is a generational talent but is expandable with Godwin and Evans O.J. the team. Pull the trigger if someone offers a 1st and 3rd or package him with a 1st rounder for Ramsey

  41. BigMacAttack Says:

Good point about Licht. It would be awesome if they could trade him.

  42. Gino Says:

  43. Barack's Crack Pipe Says:

    “Wilson is so, so streaky.”
    .
    .

C’mon, Joe. I must have missed the “streaks.” I saw him make one impressive play in London. That makes one play. I may be forgetting one from the last two years.

I got tired of watching Humphries return punts, and he at least hit league averages. Bobo just makes booboos.

  44. NPRSageBoy Says:

Move ’em both; this team is circling the drain anyway. Might as well get something of value, anything really for them.

It’s time to let this dumpster fire rage

Why would you expect any form of logic from the GM.

  46. Joe Says:

    Probably right.

  47. Joe Says:

Probably not a graduate from UF because there is usually a mutual respect for players from other schools when you go there.

Yannik Ngokue / Von Bell / Michael Thomas or basically anyone other than Aguayo in R2 of 16′
Dalvin Cook RB in R1 or R2 of 17′
    Derwin James S in R1 of 18′
Donte Jackson or Josh Jackson CB in R2 of 18′
Josh Allen OLB/DE R1 of 19′ (or my plan – trade back and take Brian Burns/Devin Bush/Jonah Williams)
    Dalton Risner R2 of 19′ OPG/OT

All decisions that are likely made if JBF commentators are making draft picks.

    That’s sad.

I hope the Glazers read this site. Literally pull up all of LUV’s comments and realize that fans on the internet with less available resources know better than the owners or the people they hire.

    Spot On!!! LC

  52. Bucamania Says:

Of course they are calling the Bucs for OJ. Perfect example of a talented player who is misused by a crappy team. Surprised Licht isn’t trading him for another bad CB or safety. Such a mess.

  53. Smashsquatch Says:

Trade Brate and free up cap money at the same time. Tanner Hudson is the cheap replacement and a Brate free roster just might be what the doctor ordered to get OJ going.

  54. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

No, not all of us. Don’t group realistic fans like me with homers like the missing (10-6) NOSBOS and DB55. It takes more than a washed up HC and a missing #1 pick like White to turn around this Titanic of a team.

I have to agree with licht on this one. It is damn near the only position group that does not have a glaring hole in it(WR,DT, ALMOST LB. humphries would be nice to have right now) if he even considers trading one of these TE for anything less than a 1st round pick and a solid starter, glazers should just fire him on the spot.
