Mike Evans: Human

October 11th, 2019

Among the best, GMs say.

Joe has been pimping Mike Evans as a potential Hall of Fame candidate.

The Bucs have only had three Hall of Fame players, all defenders. If Evans continues at his current rate, he could have a historic career.

Yes, Evans had a goose egg last week. In the eyes of some NFL general managers, this only shows Evans is, well, human.

Mike Sando of The Athletic surveyed NFL shot-callers and found that Evans is in the Class B subcategory of No. 1 receivers. The best human receivers.

No. 1 wide receivers (Human Division)

Evans is on pace for his sixth consecutive 1,000-yard season to start his career. He’s averaging 20.4 yards per reception this season, up from a career-high 17.7 average in 2018. Evans also has four scoring receptions through five games, but New Orleans shut him out Sunday as cornerback Marshon Lattimore won the latest installment of their NFC South rivalry.

“I think he is a No. 1 and he is great down the field, but to me, when you are talking about Julio and Hopkins and Antonio Brown, I mean, that is a different level,” a GM said.

Included in this group, per Sando, are DeAndre Hopkins and Michael Thomas.

Yes, Evans was locked down by Marshon Lattimore last week. Well, that falls on Bucs offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich. He has to scheme Evans open. You don’t think other good corners shadow opposing teams’ No. 1 receivers?

@Joe … “Yes, Evans was locked down by Marshon Lattimore last week. Well, that falls on Bucs offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich. He has to scheme Evans open. ”

Yeah verily. Same with OJ Howard and Cam Brate.

  2. Ndog Says:

I’m sorry I like be ME13 but he is not as good overall as Thomas and Hopkins, he just isn’t.

  3. Jim Says:

Or maybe Mike is just tired of losing. It has to be tough to be an incredibly gifted player on a team that can’t make the play-offs.

  4. Bob in Valrico Says:

Not sure what o make of the zero catches. The injuries to the O line and the pressure from the Saints also factored in.

  5. “That guy” Says:

Jameis has had a helluva season since the 49ers game, although I still see Evans consistently winning his matchups downfield without Jameis being able connect with him in stride. If Jameis could accomplish this consistently, evans numbers would be up 30-40% and this would be a conversation of Evans possibly being the greatest receiver to ever play football.

People tend to forget that Evans pretty much gifted Johnny manzeil a heisman trophy, a near impossible feat.

  6. richbucsfan Says:

It is unlikely #3 will get the ball to Evans with new guys at RG and RT. Don’t hold your breath.
IMO, Carolina avenges the earlier loss and sends the Bucs home with a loss.

  7. OverIt Says:

Ndog are you kidding Mike Evans is not better than Mike Thomas? Without Brees Mike Thomas would be an above average WR. Jameis had no time last week to get the ball off he was sacked 6 times and hurried a bunch of others. You cant put it on Mike Evans that he didnt get the ball you have to credit NO defense and wonder why Leftwhich didn’t call up more plays to get Mike Evans the ball. Gotta adjust the game plan sometimes. Wasting my time going at it with you commentators you guys don’t know football

  8. Bobby M. Says:

Great player…..no question regarding that but with no right side of the line, no secondary and an avg running game, i still believe we and him are better served trading him for draft picks and cap space. We are right back to where we’ve been, lots of weapons but a QB that’s under pressure and no ability to stop the opposing team’s receivers. The results are well documented, that formula doesn’t work.

  9. Son of Kobe Faker Says:

    “1 trick pony

Runs the Go route and that’s it

1 of the worst route runners in the NFL

Trade him for 1st round. $18 mill and on decline”

    Son of Kobe Faker

  10. Jeff Says:

He gets a lot of catches when the Bucs are trailing. Soft defenses conceding passing yards. He’s definitely human. Grade B is fitting and deserved. He’s no “A” receiver. He got shut out last game. Doesn’t happen to “A” receivers.

  11. Joseph Busciglio Says:

Who are the QBs for those other WRs.

    HOFers?

Shocker, the WRs have greate numbers.

    Hmmmm

  12. DB55 Says:

Good news saw JW practicing how to throw the ball from the ground under three defenders this week. That should help him get the ball to mike more consistently

  13. Alanbucsfan Says:

    DB55

JW is the greatest 39 % win record qb of all time – congratulations

  14. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

The true difference between ME and Julio, Hopkins, Antonio Brown, and Michael Thomas is that ME doesn’t get the play the Bucs defense.

I feel sorry for Mike being a Buc. All this losing. I know how it feels as a fan, so I cannot imagine putting in all that work and being embarrassed week after week.

  15. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

    @DB55, lmao

I think JW is going to need that this week with a brand new right-side of the Oline

  16. Mort Says:

Steve Young is a HOFer too, or something….

Yep, AB is better than Evans – only he isnt. He’s on the couch becauae he ran himself out of three teams in less than a year.

Id take Evans over him, Julio, or Thomas. Hopkins a push.

  17. 813bucboi Says:

i agree with the GM….mike is great but JJ,MT,DH are elite….they’re on a different level….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  18. DB55 Says:

    Alan

Matches the Bucs all-time winning percentage so that makes sense. Too bad he doesn’t line up at cb each game too.

Now go drink some white claw and stfu.

  19. adam from ny Says:

    mike…

make bradberry eat chalk dust in the UK my dude…

    🙂

  20. Dapostman Says:

There were games in the late 80’s and early 90’s when Jerry Rice didn’t get the ball and the 49’ers lost. Guess what happened next? Rice would rant and rave at practice and the next game he was fully implemented in the game plan. Hopefully BL is smart enough to actually start using his best weapons. Evans, Godwin, Howard, Brate and Jones.

  21. bucsfan561 Says:

crazy how theyre on a whole other level yet he’s putting up the same if not better numbers with less catches.. idk what people want, its only so much one man can do… I hate how the media will say he got shut down when it was only 3 targets.. had it been 9-10 with no catches then I’m thinking damn he shut him down.. were just gonna ignore the fact that jameis didn’t have anytime, the saints held the ball for most of the game and mike has to be getting doubled because godwin is winning his matchup one.. OJ howard gotta win his matchups this isn’t on mike not one bit

  22. bucsfan561 Says:

    their

  23. Pewter power Says:

Honestly you think he did that with zero help over the top? He had help the entire game give me a break exaggerating his skills…..yes you do have to scheme guys open that’s football. Anyone can be locked down any game with double coverage.

  24. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

Top 10 WR for sure but gets shut down too often to be higher

Hall of fame is a stretch as well, so far

  25. unbelievable Says:

“He gets a lot of catches when the Bucs are trailing. Soft defenses conceding passing yards.”

That’s a funny ‘opinion’ considering the Bucs were either ahead or tied when Evans caught pretty much all his passes against the Panthers, Giants and Rams….

  26. #1bucsfan Says:

Everyone raves about Hopkins but where’s he at. Mike has one game with zero ketches this year an now he’s a b receiver sorry these media guys don’t know their mouth from their ass get these clowns out of here

  27. JimmyJack Says:

Yeah Joe ya might gotta back off that HOF talk for a bit til Mike can proove it.

The consistently it takes to get into the Hall is much rarer to find then the talent.

In a somewhat related note I am danged embarrassed about Mike’s little to tapped routine heading into the endzone…….What I precieved as swag was prooved to be little more then empty showboating followed up by a no show the next game. True swag don’t get shut down the way Mike did last week……Hey dance all you like but you best be ready to back it up the next week. If not I call you an ass.Embarassing.

  28. Buczilla Says:

Geez, it’s not like Lattimore shut Mike down all by himself. If Mike played in New York he would be considered the best receiver in the game right now. I’d say the only receiver better than Mike would be Antonio Brown, but he done got himself kicked out of the league.
