“I Can Veto Anything”

October 29th, 2019

“Yeah Ira, that play stunk.”

Interesting insight from Bucco Bruce Arians on what goes on during playcalling on the sidelines.

Two plays in Sunday’s game at Nashville were real head-scratchers. One was, with the season on the line, on 4th-and-1, the Bucs called for Peyton Barber up the gut out of a shotgun.

It failed miserably and virtually sealed the deal the Bucs would not play a meaningful game in January for the 12th consecutive season.

Arians told Dan Lucas of WFLA-TV Channel 8 in their weekly sitdown that he is to blame for that play.

Arians explained the play was a run-pass option meaning America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, had the option of passing with a prearranged play or running the ball on a prearranged play, depending on how he read the defense.

“The pass was totally covered,” Arians said, noting Jameis made the correct read. “It was just poor blocking. Part of it was me. It was poor design and a poor call. I will take all the blame for that one.”

Arians also pled guilty on a play that will be remembered in Bucs lore. The play where Breshad Perriman tackled Dare Ogunbowale for a one-yard loss.

Initially, after Sunday’s game, Arians said that was on Jameis and Jameis in his postgame remarks admitted fault as well. But Arians told Lucas that in the end, Arians approved the play and in retrospect, Arians said he should have thrown that play in the trash.

“I am taking that one,” Arians said. “Cause I didn’t like the call. And I can veto anything. That’s on the coaches.”

Well now. So now we know that Arians tacitly approves each of Leftwich’s playcalls. And that Arians has veto power if he doesn’t like one of Leftwich’s plays?

Very interesting indeed.

All coach speak at this point. Would love to hear what he’s saying behind closed doors. Reading into public comments is a complete waste of time

  2. tmaxcon Says:

BA is BS is so predictable

  3. 541Buc Fan Says:

So the DBs aren’t the only ones who have to pull their heads out of their asses.

Year after year Bucs football is total comedy.

Keep Licht, keep BA, keep Winston, and keep us all laughing.

  4. Jeebs the Honey Bear Says:

I’m now convinced BA came back to coaching because he was bored, not because he truly wanted to coach. He thought he could come in here and supervise and delegate and that just his mere presence would turn this thing around. He bought into his own hype. This team needs full effort coaching, and BA just doesn’t have it in him anymore. This franchise needs a reboot.

  5. Tye Says:

So now along with a wretched QB they have a terrible OC and a HC that condones and approves of their putrid work.. Great!

  6. FortMyersDave Says:

You know what is coming next week, Bucs execute a decent offensive plan against Seattle with Winston throwing 3 TDs and the running game gets back on track BUT the defense reverts back to garbage self and lets Russell Wilson have a career day and/or special teams will allow a blocked punt, FG or return for another TD and the Bucs lose 38-34 but BA will be all about how JW showed up on Sunday. Never a complete game from this team which is why they’ll be picking in the top ten of the draft this year along with the Jets, Giants, Broncos, Skins Fins and all the other bottom feeders of the NFL meaning that there is a good chance Tua, Herbert, Eason or any other relevant QB will probably be off the draft board when the Bucs pick at 5th or 6th.

  7. Defense Rules Says:

So with the game still winnable late in the 4th quarter, our 2-Time Coach of the Year ALLOWS his junior OC to run a play that he KNOWS won’t work. Seriously?

I’m sorry, but that’s infuriating. Jameis made the correct read (pass option was a no-go) but what he was left with had zero chance of succeeding BEFORE we ran the play BY OUR HC’S OWN ADMISSION. ““It was just POOR BLOCKING. Part of it was me. It was POOR DESIGN and a POOR CALL. I will take all the blame for that one.”

Poor DESIGN, poor PLAY-CALL, poor EXECUTION. With the game on the line. YGBSM.

Poor EXECUTION stinks, but it happens. We’re the Bucs; it’s what we do … and we do it largely because of poor talent in key positions & more-so because of lousy preparation. THAT’S more on the coaches than anything else.

Poor PLAY-CALLING stinks even more. Competent play-calling is an art IMO; some OCs (like Sean Payton) have it, many (like Byron Leftwich) are just wannabees. They don’t have that ‘feel’ for the game & what to call when.

But POOR DESIGN? There’s no excuse in the world for that IMO. It’s not like this is playground football (hey, we’ve all played it … “You go deep, you go short, and I’ll throw it to one of you or I’ll run it”).

We lost a ballgame Sunday where our guys played their hearts out & coaching let them down. BIG TIME. Just like it did in the Giants’ game. THAT’S inexcusable. And words like ‘I’ll take the blame for that one’ and ‘That’s on me’ are meaningless. We’ve heard that week-after-week BEFORE … and the losing continues.

“And Nero fiddled while Rome burned”.

But did the Golf Cart approve? Does it have Veto power? Bruce ” Lack of Preparation H” Arians

  9. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

This playing calling hoopla is BS…there is a game plan with scripted plays based on whatever situations imagined and the is plan together for each team…BA and Leftwich talk all the time…Leftwich is not pulling the plays out of his azz…

  10. gotbbucs Says:

So when does this nightmare end?

  11. down in the dirt doug Says:

Time for the owners to make some calls and get a president of operations unless they want our stadium to be a lonely and desolate place during games.

  12. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

    BA values friendships over championships

Leftwich and Licht will ruin his rep as a good coach

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Here is my question…..how is the pass covered?……It was 1 yard…..can’t you roll Jameis out and let him decide then…..1 yard…..

  14. ClodHopper Says:

BA is stacking up mistakes almost as fast as Jameis. Is this guy mailing it in or what. I didnt used to buy the whole retirement plan on the Glazers dime talking point but I’m starting too.

When he said stack em up, I assumed he meant wins. Looks like he meant boneheaded mistakes.

  15. PhillyBuc Says:

So how did they think the defense would play a 4th & 1? Give a ten yard cushion and play 2 deep zone? BAs excuses are as laughable as that play call.

  16. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

    @TBBF,

I agree. Roll Jameis out. It was working all game. Stupid call, AND predictable.

Its sad when we are now missing Koetter, but the Bucs offense hummed with him as the play caller.

Whats next? Are we going to miss Smitty soon? Maybe Rock Star Dominick?

This is my lowest point as a Bucs fan. Not only are do we suck, but there is no hope. Whatever changes Glazers might make, they will make the wrong one and we will continue to suck.

  17. theodore Says:

In reality, though, there’s not enough time between downs to veto and change a play. Would need to burn a timeout.

  18. Frank Pillow Says:

Excuses, excuses…hey Bruce, it’s about exercising proper oversight IN THE MOMENT. This hindsight nonsense is exactly why this team is imploding. Wake up old man and be the coach you used to be- the one we got a glimpse of during the ‘All or Nothing’ series…Not the flaccid lump of hot bs that ‘observes’ practice from the comfort of his golf cart. Stop daydreaming about Crown and colas on your pontoon boat during the game, pull the mic down and freakin’ talk into it…in other words, COACH. Occasionally yelling at the zebras and blowing TOs isn’t enough.

  19. Razor Ramone Says:

Between Arians mistakes on game day, the game stealing mistakes of the refs, and the usual and predictable soul sucking mistakes made by the same imbeciles every week on the field, I am shocked we even won ONE game. Honest to God ,you don’t know weather to laugh or cry. (I used to cry, now I laugh)

  20. 813bucboi Says:

    c’mon bruce….

    your better than that…..

not one of the TOs were JW fault, you call out the DBs and make excuses for every mistake JW has….

    is JW that mentally weak?…..

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  21. Bucs Fan Since ‘76 Says:

For everyone clobbering Arians 24/7, what would you like him to say? “Look, when I took this job I did not realize how incompetent the Glazers were. They seemed nice enough and Jason said good things about them. And I also had no idea how inept Jason was at selecting players and managing the cap. But boy does this organization stink. Terrible players. Terrible culture. I’d say let’s blow it all up and get some draft picks but realistically Jason would be the one selecting the new players, and well, isn’t he like 28-75?”

Actually, I’d like him to say something like that.

  22. orlbucfan Says:

How about Arians vetoing his ego, and coming up with a decent offensive (as in non-putrid) gameplan for next Sunday? The players are already pissed, and trading OJ Howard ain’t gonna cut it!

  23. TOM Says:

Heaven forbid that Winstone is at fault for anything. BA I don’t know if you notice but your not using your veto power enough. Lefttwitch is a joke. But after all he fits right in to this organization.

  24. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Hasn’t anyone noticed that every time Arians calls a play it fails? It’s not all on Leftwich.

  25. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

And here is a twist…I approve of him reviewing the playcall in the game.

Here’s why: Something the fans missed and Arians will not admit to (mainly because the NFL would change the rule again), Arians saw the defense needed a rest. Which gets more rest time? A time out or a review?

At worst, calling for a review gave them an extended time out. While fans were complaining about the lost time out, I was thinking a time out needed to be called anyway, so the review, which costs the same, was the smarter move.

Coaches all over the league are using the review flag to their advantage. I don’t have any issue with it.

  26. NPRSageBoy Says:

The game has passed BA by. Couple that with inferior talent and a QB who is a turnover machine and you have Buccaneer football.

BA can make all the excuses he wants, but his proclivity for BS exposes that.

Face it, season over. Housecleaning next

    Wait ’til next year

    Peace, out

  27. unbelievable Says:

Another week and another colossal mistake from Arians at a key part of the game.

Old man is out of his element.

  28. Buccfan37 Says:

Bruce “I can veto anything” Arians has a bloated ego. His package deal extending Licht is pure baloney. Who in their right mind would make that move? This is a cruel amateurish joke not worthy of any respect. On the job training…you’re both fired as miserable failures.

  29. German Buc Says:

I hoped we will see some creativity in play calling this year. But I guess we won’t see a flea flicker, a reverse or a fake reverse, a naked bootleg, a pass from a WR or a RB or just anything the quys on the other side of the ball are not expecting.

  30. BringBucsBack Says:

An RPO called for Jameis? What? When was the last time #3 pulled a ball out of an RB’s gut? Huh? That’s tantamount to dropping Vita into pass-coverage!? Again, WHAT? Just dumbfounded!
