Humphries Hiding In Weeds

October 24th, 2019

Set to explode?

If is not like it’s difficult at all for wide receivers to exploit the disgustingly bad Bucs secondary. So Joe wonders if a receiver who knows the Bucs’ secondary best might just turn around his otherwise mediocre season?

That would be Adam Humphries. The former Bucs slot receiver took his skills to Tennessee in the offseason.

Some Bucs fans believe that was a dire mistake. But one cannot argue with results and Humphries’ replacement, Chris Godwin, has been lighting it up this year.

Still, Humphries seems to be moving the chains like he always did, averaging just over nine yards a catch, but he has only caught 25 balls through seven games. He’s on pace to have the fewest yards receiving since he was a Bucs rookie undrafted free agent having a rookie quarterback throwing him passes.

Of course, one reason Humphries’ numbers might be low is that he had gimmick quarterback Marcus Mariota throwing (?) him the ball. Mariota is proof that just because a guy can hand off and just because he can run fast doesn’t mean he’s a quarterback. At some point you have to use your arm besides tossing pitchouts.

Now with Ryan Tannehill starting for the benched Mariota, Humphries had two of his better games this year since Tannehill took over (Mariota was pulled out of a game two weeks ago for lack of production).

So it would not surprise Joe one bit that with a quarterback who can throw a pass farther than 10 yards, and with Humphries knowing how to school Bucs’ defensive backs, Humphries could just blow up his former team.

And if that happens it may just be time for the Bucs to blow up this roster.

I have Humphries in a few of my GPP lineups as a boom or bust player on DraftKings. Betting against the Bucs defense is rarely a bad play in DFS.

  2. Defense Rules Says:

Yup, makes perfect sense. If Hump has a great day, it’s “time for the Bucs to blow up this roster”. Which is exactly what the Panthers did last year when Humphries had a great game against them with 8 catches on 8 targets for 82 yards & 2 TDs. Oh wait, no they didn’t … they WON that game 42-28. Danged, my bad, I’ll have to keep looking.

  3. JJV Says:

Joe- the problem with waiting to blow up the roster after this game is they should have done it this off season. Licht should have been replaced as well. If it meant losing out on BA so be it. What needed to be done put us back another season. All signs point to this continuing next season. But we always have hope which is nice.

Maybe from a football standpoint but not a business standpoint.

Glazers have many millions of dollars invested in Jameis. Would have been very foolish not to try another method to turn that investment around. As in a coach with a proven track record for building quarterbacks.

Sort of like buying a truck for $20k and if the wipers don’t work parking the truck in a Walmart parking lot with a sign “Free to a Good Home” only because you didn’t like the service manager at dealer you bought the truck from.

  5. Buczilla Says:

Humphries is above average and overpaid. Godwin is a rising star and will break the bank. How the hell are we going to be able to afford him and Mike?

  6. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Nothing would be more Bucs than to have Humphries go 10 catches for 150 and 2 TD’s.

  7. JJV Says:

Good point Joe. But BA was not the only coach that could have tried to fix Jameis
There were other options out there if they wanted to really make wholesale changes. Blow up was not an option.

“Hump going to tell OC and other receivers about the pitiful corners and their weaknesses

Tons of slants and crossing patterns

Mariota held down 2 of the most underrated and talented receivers in Cory Davis and AJ Brown

These 2 are 3x better than MEME and Godwin

    Just watch these 2 receivers

    2 words

    Physicality”

One of the biggest offseason mistakes made by Licht/Arians was letting Hump go. He is absolutely killing it for the Titans. He is somewhere between a reliable checkdown and an across-the-middle late WR for them too. Not to mention he did fine as the Bucs PR. Two buffoons continue to ruin this team. Even DK saw the value in Hump. How’s Bobo and Perriman working out? Yeah. Hump will get 100 yards Sunday and run through our “totally fixed” secondary at will.

  10. Anonymous Says:

Kobe your crazy to think that even all their WRs put together would be better than Godwin let alone ME13 who has bin killing it since he came into the league 5 years ago. Get your head checked on that one bro

STOP! He’s having his worst season since he was a rookie. Your bar for “killing it” must be painfully low.

“Glazers have many millions of dollars invested in Jameis.”
Actually the Glazers realize they have many millions WASTED on him by keeping him this past year. They should have let him go, never drarfted him really, but hindsight is always 20/20. Or is it? JJV was right. They should have blown this up last year but couldn’t afford to with salary cap issues and true, they did need to confirm what they already know. Many people like to say “find out what they have.” Oh, they know. Everybody knows. Licht, being under a deal, is under a LOT less presusure to make Winston work out…or to win this year. So let guys chomp on that.

  13. Anonymous Says:

    “STOP” He’s having his worst….”
Nope, not when you look at what those catches do. 25 catches in 3 games started and 7 games total for 9.2 average is not bad but when you look at him moving the chains, yes he IS killing it. He is making plays, not just getting garbage yards when they are down by three TDs. He is not so much replaced by Godwin as he is by Perriman, who has not been good.

Someone would look at Winston’s yards etc and think he’s a good QB. But we know better. It’s not the stats, but what is being done with the play.

    Wise Joe wrote this one.

These are the types of scenarios where the Bucs find themselves on the short end of the stick. Somehow Humphries will go off and it will feel like a kick to the seeds. He was way too pricey to retain so I don’t fault him for leaving though.

  17. DB55 Says:

    Joe

But what if the brakes don’t work? Lemon? Ijs

    We got no brakes (def)

  18. DooshLaRue Says:

Yeah Joe, those gimmick QBs ………

So glad we got the “Pro Ready” one instead.

And I’m not a Mariota supporter.

  19. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

They are hardly using him. He’s only started a few games.

  20. Anonymous Says:

If Mariota is a “gimmick” QB, what the hell is Jay Miss?

  21. westernbuc Says:

Godwin is the two, so he basically replaced DJax. Licht thought Bobo Wilson would suffice to replace Hump, even though he didn’t even bother to stay in Tampa during cut day.

  22. bucnole Says:

F%^K Hump. . . he is not a Buc anymore

  23. Wesley Says:

We’re missing that dude big time.

  24. Pryda...Sec147 Says:

    Doubt it.

  25. Bojim Says:

Wish him the best. He is a worker.

  26. Nano107 Says:

    Lay off
The Titan receivers better than Evans and Godwin
    Lol
They almost could beat the Chargers
    Dude what are you on

  27. David Says:

    Blow it up?
    They just did.

    They need linemen and DBs.

The only thing to blowup is QB

  28. FortMyersDave Says:

Humphries 105 yards, 2 TDs???? Seems reasonable given the Bucs pass D, unless someone knocks him out of the game…..

  29. Marlow1976 Says:

Letting Hump go was poor move. Bet he ends up in New England one day and gets a ring… Does that sound familiar?

  30. July Joe Says:

Humphries went from a real QB who can throw to a game-manager and check-down artist.

Humphries will always be thankful to Jameis Winston for getting him PAID … same with Kelvin Benjamin, Rashaad Greene and Cam Brate.

  31. RODNEY ALLEN Says:

I snagged him in my fantasy league just for this game 🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️ I mean if hes going to I might as well benefit from it

  32. Pewter power Says:

Bucs corners have a problem with speed, that aint Adam Humphries. The Joe’s are pathetic honestly talking this guy up like he was the best slot reciever in the league. He is not the premier receiver there he just gets paid like it. If anything if we let him go off then start all the rookies no need to have the vet corners continue to start with the worst pass defense, I say give it to the rookies and let them get the experience for 2020, only corners in danger are Davis and vh3
