No Waiver Claims For Tampa Bay

September 1st, 2019

“Not much in the NFL dumpster this year, Mr. Glazer.”

Once upon a time in 2015, general manager Jason Licht was all fired up about having the No. 1 NFL waiver claim position so he and the Bucs could clean up when cuts were made around the league.

As the reigning worst team in the NFL (2-14 in 2014) that’s one of your prizes, the top slot in the waiver queue for the following season.

In 2015, the Bucs brought in talented safety D.J. Swearinger via waivers after he was cut before the season by the Texans. Well, Lovie Smith didn’t like Swearinger for some reason. He was launched at midseason and has had 11 interceptions over the past three seasons while missing just one game.

Today, per Jenna Laine of ESPN, the Bucs were awarded no waiver claims following yesterday’s cuts around the NFL. That doesn’t mean the Bucs didn’t try; it just means any guy they wanted (if they put in a claim) was gobbled up by one of the four teams in line before Tampa Bay.

Joe knows many fans were certain the Bucs would be gobbling up offensive and defensive linemen as if they were Joe eyeing a fresh plate of Abe’s Place french fries, but it didn’t happen.

Bucco Bruce Arians and Licht must be rather content with their roster and the results of yesterday’s trade for Steelers offensive tackle Jerald Hawkins, a veteran of five games since he was drafted in 2016.

Keep calm, Bucs fans. The Bucs have enough firepower to beat the 49ers in seven short days. And there is still time to land a player(s) who was cut to make room for a waiver addition by another team.

the majority of the current 53 man roster would clear waivers….

  2. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

    Tanking for Tua?

  3. Nelson Says:

It’s going to be hard to get ahead of the Fins for Tua. Their lineup looks like a second team in about 14/22 spots.

  4. T REX Says:

    They like our roster. BUWAHAHAHAHAHA

    6-10

This isn’t a very good football team and the psycho fans on here gave the roster a B. What are they putting in the water here?

Please post how you like your crow prepared.

  5. Bucsfan3 Says:

@Joe – Please delete any fan comment mentioning Tanking before the season begins. There’s enough garbage on the internet, clean up the ignorant comments.

  7. Tony LA Says:

Anyone who is writing about Tua… just go away.
    You clearly suck at life.
Don’t infect the board with your whiny cynicism.

  8. tmaxcon Says:

They also like basement titles. you have to try to be as bad as they are…..

  9. Couch Fan Says:

Wow what terrible luck. I cant remember a time we didnt scoop a single person off the waiver wire. What a weird beginning to a season this has become. Still expect big things this season.

  10. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Joe…..just how many waiver claims were made by the 4 teams above us?…..and what were the positions?
Those answers should tell us as to whether we wanted a player someone else took.
A little research…..put Zach on it….if he’s still with you.

  11. TampaBay55 Says:

How much you fellas want to bet over half the league got at least one reliable starter off waivers the past couple of days. Licht is such a bad GM…

  12. Dewey Selmon Says:

People wanting to tank for Tua are amateurs. let’s suck for 2 years and shoot for Trevor Lawrence.

  13. Buccaneerscotty Says:

    Don’t worry we will!^^^

  14. JimmyJack Says:

With competent coaching like we now have y’all will see this is a 11-5 roster.

You will start to understand when we take our first possession of 2019 into the endzone and when this defense resembles nothing of last year.

Get out your hate now. You will be silenced in six short days.

    GO BUCS!!!!

  15. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Anyone know a site for waiver pickups…..I just did a cursory look (Google) and I couldn’t find any news on any player that has been claimed yet.

  16. JimmyJack Says:

TBBF try bleacher report. They usually have all that kind of info.

  17. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

Is anyone really surprised that after promising to hit the waiver wire hard, the Bucs do nothing.

Someone is either unprepared, incompetent or in way over there head.

Why is Gabbert still on this roster? Guaranteed money? Just cut him and pay him.
Grab a RG, RT or take a gamble on Jachal Polite.

  18. mike johnson Says:

Again I say, you gotta want to be good in this league. Old Bellacheat made 3 trades for O linemen before. They want to stay on top. Its tradition and a burning desire for them. US? We just hope and pray for 500 at seasons end. Many of who have been around for a while are depressed about this team. We wait and we hold on to assets we know will not pan out. Spence should have been gone 2 yrs ago. I feel sorry for the fans who actually believe this is a very good roster. Licht sorta sucks.

  19. Defense Rules Says:

“Licht sorta sucks”. Great understatement Mike.

  20. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Thanks Jimmy……..Bleacher had nothing…

If the players have cleared waivers shouldn’t we have our PS players lined up?

I’m unsure of the deadlines & timing……this article makes it appear that we have passed on all available players…..but I’m not so sure that’s the case. We simply haven’t moved on any yet.

  21. Bucsfanman Says:

Y’all crack me up with the Tua talk! Another overhyped college QB! Anyone recall how the last “tanking” worked out?! Yeah, TBD! That’s not a resounding endorsement!

  22. JimmyJack Says:

TBBF I’m not sure what you are looking for but I just went to bleacher report to check it out & they got tons of news on which teams made waiver claims. I’m sure they have all of them but it would take a lot of scrolling and piesing together to figure it all out.

Just doing a quick look at it I saw that nobody claimed that Polite dude and he’s now a practice squad player. Also saw that Gruden claimed a backup QB from Green Bay. All the rest was just a bunch of names I never heard of before.

  23. Pete Mitchell Says:

Just saw that Andrew Luck took out a full page ad thanking Cilts fans, boy are they going to be mad in two years when he comes out of retirement to play for the Bucs!

  24. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Thanks Jimmyjack…

I didn’t go to their site…..just Googled them and there was nothing there….

    I’ll go to their site…

  25. Jonathan Limpchimpi Says:

With Licht’s beyond reproach track record…teams are no doubt clamoring for his cuts. Just as there’s the Patriot Way…there’s now The Licht/Right Way.

  26. Tampabaybucfan Says:

You could actually look at this two different ways:

    1. We really like our players and their experience with our system and didn’t feel there were any legitimate upgrades available (unless taken in front of us)

    Or

    2. We have absolutely no idea on evaluating talent…..either our own or anyone else’s.

  27. JimmyJack Says:

TBBF…….I felt bad for you trying to sort through and make sense of the convoluted mess on the bleacher report page. So I did you a solid a checked a few more sites.

Try spotrac dot com. They actually have a neat list of all players who were signed today and which were put on to new teams practice squads. Much easier to look at and digest.

Even got a list of all players cut on every team if your curious.

Sidenote……I saw a Bucs mentioned and stopped to look at it said Kong Suh was fined for his hit on Baker Mayfield.

  28. Rojas Says:

Why do people want tua ? He’s garbage.

  29. I don’t want to be the best GM in the league I want to be the fattest and luckiest to have a job. Says:

I’m super satisfied with the garbage I have brought to Tampa. Now please pass the potatoes and gravy.

  30. JimmyJack Says:

Actually just one dope said to tank for Tua. The oulash against that one poster is making a bigger deal of it then anything.

There always gonna be a few random dopes inside any fanbase. Not worth getting worked up about.

Anybody with a lick of sense knows Bruce didn’t come of of retirement to tank.

  31. Todd Says:

    Joe—

I’d appreciate a post explaining how the waiver wire works. Im totally confused. I thought it was like the draft. We’re #5. Previous four teams pick their selections off waivers and then we choose the best available for out needs. We didn’t even make a selection?!

    I just don’t understand.

  32. Anonymous Says:

Claim an O-lineman? Why? They aren’t going to necessarily be better. O-Line isn’t exactly strong across the NFL right now. Everyone is paper thin.

  33. JimmyJack Says:

In mine opinion Lovie Smiths plan in 2014 was to tank. Thats why we dismantled our OL. Why we ran off Revis and why we got McCown to QB for us.

Can never proove it but it does make a lot of sense.

  34. Mort Says:

O-Line isn’t exactly deep across the NFL. Our dudes are probably just as good/bad as anyone else at this point. League-wide, it’s a paper thin group. If you can play, you’re on a roster.

  35. FireJasonLicht Says:

Somebody up there said we have an 11-5 roster🤣😂🤣😂 I just want to be the 1st to say, thank you for that laugh.

  36. Barack's Crack Pipe Says:

Why do people want tua ? He’s garbage.

Easy answer, cause they don’t watch the games and just parrot everything ESPN tells them to think. They are clueless drones that know nothing about football yet they spew the same crap daily

  38. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ JimmyJack…..

Thanks……the fine for Suh was BS…..he barely pushed him…..I mean…if you’re going to get penalized and fined……knock the $hit out of ’em.

  39. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Bruce Anderson signed to PS…..(no surprise there)

  40. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

You people are such posers, lol.

What does it cost to claim players off waivers?

How many on this team were players who cleared waivers?

    Get it together Bucs fans.

  41. Pickgrin Says:

No waiver awards for the Bucs. So if they made any claims – one of 4 teams got that player instead.

This says to me that they didn’t see any/many chances for improving the bottom of the roster and are relatively happy with the guys who made the final 53.

Lots of question marks about this roster heading into the season – questions that should be mostly answered within the first 6 weeks.

BA loves his RBs. Everyone else in the league sees our RB stable as weak at best…

No significant moves on/for the OLine this offseason (other than backing up the Brinks truck for D. Smith – SMH). Will coaching really make that much of a difference for one of the leagues worst run blocking units in 2018? It better…. Is Alex Cappa a significant upgrade over Benenoch at RG? He better be! When (not if) Dotson goes down, is Benenoch ready for prime time at RT? Yikes!

Can Nassib and Shaq Barrett provide the pressure off the edges that this defense needs to be successful? Will JPP be back after the bye for the week 8 game vs the Titans? And if so – will he be effective?

Can all the young players in the secondary “communicate” and “gel” quickly enough to not have major lapses that lead to too many big plays early in the season? Better yet – are all these largely unproven young secondary players any good? Can they compete well like they did in pre-season vs the likes of Julio Jones, Michael Thomas etc etc when games actually count?

Oh – and perhaps most importantly – How’s the Jameis Winston “whispering” coming along……?

  42. SB Says:

ONLY FOUR MORE DAYS TO SIGN UP FOR THE PICKEM GUYS!

    mike johnson Says:
“… you gotta want to be good in this league. Old Bellacheat made 3 trades for O linemen…”
    .
    .

Belicheat knew they were last in line for waivers. He HAD to trade for what he wanted. Those guys he traded for, I would bet, were on Lichtweight’s radar. We were waiting for them to drop and somebody else went out and got them. Which is why (in my mind) Licht reacted by trading for the last guy he had on his cut-down wish list before someone else did.

    Belicheat outsmarted everyone yet again.

  44. Todd Says:

    Pickgrin—

    Excellent post. Thanks.

  45. Ptwalk Says:

You guys kill me, so we didn’t want anything out of the trash heap and we’re a garbage because of it. This site and it’s posters are really reaching. SMH

  46. OBP Says:

So as of right now our PS is made up of guys we cut the past week: Fitzgerald, Anderson, Wilkins, Trewyn, Hall, Beckner, Leggett, and Battle. Wondering if the last 2 will be given to guys outside of the organization? Wouldn’t mind giving Keelan Doss a look see if he isn’t signed before hand. Jameis does love big targets after all.

  47. Joe Says:

Claim an O-lineman? Why? They aren’t going to necessarily be better. O-Line isn’t exactly strong across the NFL right now. Everyone is paper thin.

“Kong Suh was fined for his hit on Baker Mayfield.”
    .
    .

That is so much bullspit. BM was still in bounds, and all Suh did was push him to make sure he went out. Hopefully they appeal that. Stupid call.

I don’t think Suh had been fined in a long time, but as soon as he comes to the Bucs, the refs start targeting him. :!

  49. NPRSageBoy Says:

Still looking for starters at RG and RT. Niners are gonna turnstile the two fools currently masquerading as NFL linemen.

Keep diving in the NFL Talent Dumpsters.

  50. Wesley Says:

This team is going to blow, not hating just truthing.

  51. D-Rome Says:

Noah Spence busting off this roster should be proof that the problems that have plagued this team wasn’t only about coaching. Coach Band-Aid is going to see for himself what the Jason Licht Reign of Terror is all about.

  52. Elita Vita Says:

Keep an eye on the Indianapolis Colts when it comes to tanking for a QB. After all, didn’t they tank to get Andrew Luck in the 1st place?

  53. Buccaroo Says:

The Bucs signed BAlll to the PS! He’s safe for now, but for how long?

  54. SCBucsFan Says:

On a bright note we don’t have to read 50 post on what a pile of garbage the player we signed off waivers is.

And nobody would put in a claim.

From the headlines more trading than I ever remember

  57. TonyC Says:

I’m not a Licht apologist but really folks what makes you think there was much available on the waiver wire particularly offensive lineman. This lineup is what it is. Let’s hope this staff can coach them up and win.

  58. Bobbo Says:

Cardinals had top claim and took two OL

  59. teacherman777 Says:

    O’Connor made the team!

He is not an NFL lineman!

    Neither is Benenoch nor Cappa.

    We are gonna suck again.

    No O-line? No chance!

  60. rrsrq Says:

NFL.com has the waiver wire ticker and Practice squad ticker, literally there were no offensive linemen on there.

  61. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

Ever get the feeling Licht is like the uncool kid in Jr high when it comes to wheeling and dealing among the other GM’s… 😉

  62. J dubb Says:

I see j’marcus Webb and Stefan Wisniewski were both released and I don’t believe they have signed anywhere. Both have starting experience. I cannot say that I have followed their careers recently but I would think they would both be upgrades on the o-line depth, as long as the price is right.

  63. BucsBandit Says:

    #LOSEFORLAWRENCE

We’ve got 2 years to suck… which we will anyway so it won’t take much effort.

  64. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Why on earth would we want to sign any future mattress movers, UPS drivers, insurance claims adjusters, high school teachers, Uber drivers, architects, electric company linemen, bouncers or sports blog writers?

Let’s just stick with our bonafide NFL players….

  65. JimmyJack Says:

11-5 roster. When you see it in six little days then you will understand.

Til then get your hate out.

And no worries. The bandwagon will stay open. Jump on and off as you wish.

    GO BUCS!!!!

  66. Cobraboy Says:

Football is here! Enjoy the ride, for better or worse!

  67. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Cobraboy, you mean ‘Casual Bandwagon Fans.’

And of course, the usual haters and trolls prey off this stuff to bring moral down. Unfortunately, TB fans are gullible enough to buy into the hate.

    But we know.

  68. SB Says:

    Bonzai!!! Get in the Pickem.

  69. Cobraboy Says:

  73. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Todd, no it’s not like the draft. Players who haven’t been in the league for a certain amount of time (what that time period is, I’m not sure) are subject to the waiver wire. Teams can put in a claim for a player, but only if they want the player. They don’t have to claim anyone if they don’t want to. If you are the only team to claim a guy, he’s yours. If multiple teams claim a guy, the player goes to the team with the worse record from the previous season.

  80. Pittsshore Says:

One more thing.THANK YOU JOE!!! For not writing an article about America’s Loser QB over the past 24 hours. You are finally breaking.

  81. D-Rome Says:

LOL, there is no such thing as a bandwagon Buccaneers fan. The only people left rooting for this team are the die-hards.

  82. Jeagan1999 Says:

Jason Licht’s track record…. we have only 2 elite level players on this roster…1 ea at WR and TE. A few mid-level guys….Godwin, Brate, Marpet, Suh….everyone else on this roster is mediocre or worse….including our QB. Arguably, our RB’s, Oline and Secondary are among the worst 5 groups in the league.

I’m sure Jason is a nice guy, but the fact is, he has way more swings and misses than he does hits. How are we supposed to have confidence that anything changes now for 2019?

  83. Jonathan Limpchimpi Says:

I find it funny that any other than “rubber stamping” LOLicht’s many gaffes or questioning the many lousy draft picks/personnel moves makes people trolls, haters, bandwagon fans etc. Admittedly it’s mostly from pear shaped Petey…author of elf erotica and co-founder of the stick holder movement. Maybe many fans ( me included ) are simply tired of the year after year losing and simply try to make light of Licht et. al.

  84. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

I am always amazed by our fans that think this team is loaded with talent. Are you guys completely oblivious to what has been going on with this team the past few years. They have a below avg o line, d line, RB group, and secondary. Licht has basically struck out with every 2nd rounder he has drafted. You know why so many bash Licht relentlessly? Because he sucks and has not been able to build a roster. Arians and his staff are not miracle workers. The only, and mean only, positive thing they have done in the offseason is hiring Arians. The team still sucks though.

  85. Glazers are idiots Says:

What happened to trading a kicker. Obviously licht was blowing smoke. I’m not sure what Arians likes about this guy except maybe he’s a doormat.

  86. Glazers are idiots Says:

There’s no waiver claims bc licht left town bc of the hurricane.

  87. D1 Says:

    D-Rome,

    100% spot on!

The idea that this franchise even has a bandwagon is as fanciful as unicorns and mermaids. But according to some super duper fans if you don’t see the herd of unicorns grazing happily on the practice fields you’re a hater, troll or part time fan.

The reality is the few people who admit to being buc fans are a collection of mentality challenged addicts. Addicts. ..yes addicts. How else can you describe the behavior of this group of people. The notion of one group separating themselves into an even smaller group is what you commonly see at a 12 steps meeting. Crack heads saying alcoholics aren’t really addicts.

    Bawaaaahaaa!!!!!

  88. WyomingDude Says:

Is anyone else recalling at a time like this….just how many darn times we heard that fake stuff from Arians how many times about, “Oh well I don’t understand why everyone’s so concerned with us needing to draft this or that…sign this or that, we still have final citizens where we can make the team whole, as we do every year”…nonsense!?!! Like 5 times at least and at least twice from Mr. Golden Corral too.

  89. WyomingDude Says:

    *cutdowns….ughhh.

  90. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Just because we didn’t get anyone from waivers doesn’t mean we didn’t put out a claim on anyone. 10 players were claimed before we had a shot at them. No one knows if we put a claim out on all 10 or none of them.

  91. Figures Says:

Tua will suck in the NFL

  92. CalBucsFan Says:

Hey Licht, go get former Georgia RB Holyfield off waivers, please!

  93. Oregonbucsfan Says:

JimmyJack, you certainly have planted your flag with that “slightly optimistic” 11-5 prediction. If they are going to be that good they should beat the Miners by 20. See you here Monday morning.
