“That’s Going To Take A Few Games For People To Realize”

September 6th, 2019

Todd Bowles

The Bucs have one big fat advantage Sunday against the 49ers, and it has nothing to do with Mike Evans, a kicker that can drill a 60-yarder or the flowing locks of Alex Cappa.

It revolves around the man with the super-loose leash, the man who said Bucco Bruce Arians told him he “can run whatever I want to run.” That’s Todd Bowles.

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan told his local media that while there’s a ton of film out there on Bowles defenses, he’s versatile enough to represent a complete mystery for a while, especially on opening day.

“We definitely prepare for him, but Todd’s a tough guy to prepare for too,” Shanahan said. “He’s done about everything in his career, so we’ll see what he wants to do with Tampa Bay. We do have to be prepared for everything, but that’s something that’s going to take a few games for people to realize what he wants to do in Tampa.”

Sports radio giant KNBR has been noting that 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo had two games preparing against a Bowles defense as a member of the Patriots, watching Tom Brady attack them, so Garoppolo has strong familiarity. But Joe’s not putting a ton of stock in that.

Bowles has the element of surprise on his side. He’s must know it, and he’s got to find ways to put it to his advantage against Garoppolo, who still is knocking off rust from ACL surgery 11 months ago.

BA is going to make us a winner again, and when he does and rides off into the sunset after year 3… It will be Bowles or Lefty that will be our next HC.

  3. Bruce Blahak Says:

getting Vea, David and Edwards back healthy will make a huge difference in what we’ve already seen!!!

  4. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Not since Monte Kiffin has left has there been a good defensive coordinator

Todd Bowles has this defense humming with an aggressive tone……..he’s adapted his defense around our players abilities/skills….not the other way around like Mike Smith was hoping our players would adapt to him = FAILURE!!!!!!

I have a feeling he’s going to use different positions to blitz with different looks.

LET THEM LOOSE AND LET THEM EAT!!!!!

  10. rrsrq Says:

It will be good to hear “Fire them cannons” when the defense scores or get turnoers in the red zone

So wonderful to read nothing but positive comments. Bucs win Sunday!!

Nice article JBF…yes Bowles may be the silver lining on Sunday but Kyle Shanahan is also known to have a few new wrinkles in his playbook. I think our DEF will need to score to get a win. I am ready for another year of Winston up and downs. I didnt see anything this off season to make me think he has advanced in the mental part of the game. His footwork and ability to see the pre-snap read and progression still needs CPR.

I didn’t know much about Coach Bowles when we hired him. I have since only watched only what he has done here. I like the attacking mentally of the Defense he is showing me in the preseason games. Very Excited to see what he does with this Defense.

  14. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

I was a big fan of a 4-3 defense during Kiffin’s Tampa 2 scheme. It wasn’t until I understood the many blitz disguises of a 3-4 that I realized the 4-3 defense was too predictable and outdated. Only if you have 4 awesome defensive lineman does it truly benefits having a 4-3.

San Fran has four awesome guys on the D line so it will be interesting to see who has the better defense.

I knew less than zero about Bowles until his tenure here. I’m super psyched to see what he’s got up his sleeve regarding the LBs and the DBs. Whitehead will be All-Pro this year, and LVD will have fun pinning his ears back!

Attacking Defense! Let the Dogs eat! Go gettem Boyz!

  17. Dewey Selmon Says:

Just please don’t get so hyped up that you over pursuit or or get suckered on a play action.

  18. Wesley Says:

Garoppolo sucks if he beats us it will be another embarrassing season.

  19. teacherman777 Says:

    Jimmy GQ is scared.

His knee is weak and he knows it.

If we F him up early, we can win.

  20. BigMacAttack Says:

Garoppolo is going down hard. 3 interceptions for the Bucs Sunday. Swarming defense. Head Hunting. Welcome home John Boy. We gonna best your boys up John Boy style. Bringing the wood, tipped balls flying up in the air, getting picked.

  21. Hodad Says:

    Jimmy is no Brady.
