Matador Defensive Line

September 2nd, 2019

Needed muscle.

There are so, so, so many ways Joe could explain how rotten the Bucs defense was last year; it’s like you don’t know where to start.

But the good folks at NFL Films, compiling stats for BSPN’s NFL Matchup, found a way to illustrate what a sorry run defense the Bucs had last year.

When it was third-and-short (two-or-less yards for a first down) for opposing offenses, there was a damn good chance for a first down. Per NFL Films, the Bucs allowed first downs on 71.1 percent of third-and-short situations, that was fifth-worst in the NFL.

Interestingly, the only team in the bottom five that was worth a hoot was the Chiefs. And why was that ok? Because they had a pinball-scoring offense. They could make up for bad defense with touchdowns, not yards between the 20s.

Hopefully, with the addition of Ndamukong Suh and Devin White, this nonsense will stop.

There is only one place to start and that is cancer93 and his mentally weak soft play…..

Hope we sign Jeremiah Ledbetter when he is healthy again. He looked pretty good in practice.

  3. Bucnjim Says:

Who were both the leaders and most responsible for this number? Yep they were shown the door. They were forced to take that dancing clown show on the road.

  4. ocala Says:

Come on Joe stop blaming the awful defense or the horrific kicking game or the below average running game.

The Bucs should get rid of the QB that led the #1 passing attack in the NFL.

  5. rrsrq Says:

Hopefully see a better Will Gholston and Vita Vea in short yardage

  6. Jimbuc2 Says:

Flip the perspective and you’ll notice a division foe that gives up the booty three out of four times. That would be the dirty bird Dixie Chicks. Hmm… I like that. Something else noteworthy: it is well known that D. Brees detests blitz pressure up the middle: hello Devin White. I’ll make a bold prediction on that very scenario. Brees will suffer a season/career ending injury after a Pewter Pirate boarding party sacks his a$$.

  7. Buccaroo Says:

…and most of those yards were gained through or over GMC.

16 total tackles for the season was criminal for a fulltime player.

at least Suh stands his ground better.

  8. JA Says:

For a post preseason hankering, I wish that Devin White would lose his Klingon cloaking device and make himself visible for the regular season.

Three of the 4 teams worse than us in that category beat us last year….and we didn’t play the 4th….

  10. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Just how do we rank on offense with 3rd and 2 or less?……not too good, I presume.

  11. RODNEY ALLEN Says:

    Washington 96.8% good lord

    Yours was worth reading Jim.
    Thanks!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!

  13. BigHog Says:

GO ahead get rid of FAMOUS and set us back to 1976!!

  14. No Risk It No Biscuit Says:

Jim is the real Bucs fan. Good info!

  15. Jarhead Says:

Vea, Suh, and Gholston are all good run stopping Dlinemean. With good blitzing LBs in White and David, we will be better at 3rd and short!!

  16. Blogtalkfootball.com Says:

Can you give us an update on who was added to practice squad, please? Spectrum news said Bruce Anderson III was one of the 7 as of now.

  17. AwShbucs Says:

Wow. Clooney traded to the Seahawks for a 3rd round pick and 2 nobodies. Why could have we made that trade?

I love JPP and think he’s a warrior. But I’d have axed him and his contract in a millisecond to acquire Clowney… not good.

    @NoRiskIt
Thanks for the props dude. I’ve been cheering our team since the franchise was awarded. I remember our very first win against Hank Stram’s Saints. My wife, now deceased, and I drove over to the old One Bucs to welcome our team bus. It was pandemonium! As for poor Hank, well I read somewhere that after the loss he was so distraught that he ripped the coach’s film out of the cameras and burned it! A long time ago, but I’ve stayed a loyal fan ever since. Go Bucs!!

  19. Bucsfanman Says:

It was never just ONE guy. We stunk as a TEAM! Last and 2nd to last say eleven guys suck.
Glad he’s gone though. Different mentality already.

Suh just got fined $21 grand for a weak ass push on Mayfield. Mayfield can run outside the pocket and threw the ball away 1 second before Suh gave the 215 lb. QB a lite shove. Look at the film. Just another to hand touch fine in the NFL. SMH.

  22. SOEbuc Says:

    *two hand touch

  23. SOEbuc Says:

JA…White could bust out after the two best players on our defense return healthy. I really don’t like it if he’ll be wearing the green dot. LVD is a vet multi pro bowler and White is a rookie that hasn’t even showed up in the preseason. Got a deep, good LB corp I’m excited to watch.

  24. Buddha Says:

Last year is history. The Buccaneers roster of 53 has 18 players not here last year, 12 on defense. Let it go, Joe. This is the time of year to be optimistic. This constant harping about last year is unattractive. Let’s see what happens in the first 8 games.

  25. SOEbuc Says:

Buddha…Word. Game one is on Sunday. LET’S GET F#CKIN’ HYPED!!! It’s going to be a joyful football weekend. Going to Austin for UT vs LSU but I have to find a bar that can get the game on Sunday. Can’t wait.

  26. Swampbuc Says:

Good riddance to Geraldine, the most empty star in the NFL. Never made a play, maybe one in nine years.

  27. Rod Munch Says:

    But Vita…

  28. CalBucsFan Says:

So why are we reading about how bad last year’s defense was again Joe? We all know that already. This is a new year, new coaches, new defensive system, etc. etc., only days away from the home opener?

We fans of the Bucs already have years of negative neuropaths alive and well in our brains from years of losing, we don’t need to “feed them” like we need another fix. How about we try to create some new ones with more pieces sprinkled with a bit more hope and optimism to at least start the season, then we can let the team’s performance dictate whether continued positive enthusiasm is warranted?

Addictions are hard to quit because it’s so much easier to continue them rather than quit them, even when that addiction is bashing the Bucs for the past as a writer or as a fellow fan commenting.

Hey guys, it’s a new season, there is hope…. Let’s Go Bucs!

Ouch! This is clearly not the Joe that calls ATM, America’s QB!
