Keyshawn Johnson Defends Jameis Winston, Rips Jared Goff But Predicts The Bucs Will Get Rolled

September 26th, 2019

Always in search of Buccaneers insight from all angles, Joe has enjoyed listening to former Bucs great Keyshawn Johnson this week on his Los Angeles ESPN radio show.

First, it’s worth noting that Johnson gets made fun there for being a defender of Jameis Winston, America’s Quarterback. He said while Jameis was brutal against the 49ers, he’s liked the way Jameis has settled down, been “pretty tame” and made big plays since the opener. Johnson has even argued that Jameis should get a new contract.

Rams quarterback Jared Goff, however, has drawn the ire of Johnson. He was appalled by how Goff, against a Browns secondary that lost nearly all its starters with injuries last week, was begging to throw interceptions last but the defenders couldn’t squeeze them all. Goff threw two picks in the Rams’ 20-13 win.

(There are many fans down on Goff out there.)

“You talk about negative stuff about Jameis Winston, about servin’ it up, and he’s this and he’s Keyshawn’s favorite quarterback, the guy has actually played pretty decent this year unlike [Marcus] Mariota,” Johnson said. “On the Rams’ side, that quarterback for $110 million hasn’t actually been the second coming of Bart Starr.”

Of course, the Bucs face the Rams on Sunday in Los Angeles at 4 p.m. The home team is favored by 9 1/2 points.

Johnson said Todd Gurley has yet to look like himself and Rams defenses consistently struggled against Bruce Arians’ Arizona offenses when they were division foes. And Johnson has a lot of respect for Todd Bowles. But after all that, sadly, Johnson said the Rams covering the 9 1/2-point spread is his best NFL bet of the weekend.

“At the end of the day, I’m smart enough to know that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will not cover and the Rams will win this game going away,” he said.

Joe sure hopes Johnson is dead wrong. While Joe wouldn’t bet on a Bucs win against the undefeated reigning NFC champs, Joe certainly expects to the Bucs to be competitive.

I am confused as to which ex Buc I should trust for competent opinions more……Keyshawn Johnson, Michael Clayton, Shaun King, Trent Dilfer, Chris Simms, Anthony Becht, Tony Dungy, Ian Beckles, Booger McFarland, Rhonde Barber, Steve Young, or Myron Lewis……

  4. Warrenfb12 Says:

I’d be surprised if they are competitive

Bucs may not win – but its a pretty good bet that they will play fairly well and cover the 9 1/2 points…

Excellent point regarding west coast vs vertical. I’ve thought from day 1 winston is not in the best scheme for him. The idea that everyone compared winston pre draft with big Ben was based on superficial things not what winston did successfully in college.

All the critical comments about koetter and all the Arians is going to do this and that and the other was more fans projecting onto Arians their own solutions and not understanding who Arians has been as a coach. Now folks are beginning to get disappointed because their expectations weren’t realistic.

I’m in agreement with you on comparing apples to apples or in this case scheme to scheme. If we compare winstons T.T. to other QB’s in the league who operate the same scheme then it’s a good comparison and its useful.
    I believe you’d agree.

The fact is winston is slower than most or the majority of his competition. The fact was on display last season and the previous season when Fitzpatrick ran the same offense.

Why is winston operating the scheme slower than his peers is the question that no one is addressing. The common replies include, longer drops 7steps, longer developing routes, protection breakdowns. This is on one side.

The other side, He’s dumb, processes slowly, awkward delivery, not intelliigent, gets locked in to a reciever.

I believe that is a fair reporting on both sides of the equation.

Personally, I see there’s multiple opinions and some are more correct than others but neither side is 100% correct. The problem is that there’s no accounting for Winston’s aggressive nature and his ability to move forward from a horrible play to a great play often in the same series.

Additionally, there’s multiple fans blaming the system but not one acknowledging Winston’s play within the system is a big part of the reason He faces certain scenarios game in and out. I can’t find an once of credibility in some people’s opinions because of this specific lapse in their analysis. It undermines everything they’re attempting to rationalize.

The same can be said of the other side that believes winston is stupid, not smart etc etc.. The absolute truth is that in the NFL QB’S are smart. Football wise. Dumb guys get exposed quickly no matter how much effort a coach puts into covering up the fact. It’s not something that can be hidden for long. Now are some players smarter than others, of course they are. That in one way means that player x is a savant and therefore player z is an idiot. Sorry but it’s not accurate. The idea that winston is not intelligent enough is an instant DQ on the person who offers up such nonsense.

Point is that there’s two sides of this strange winston debate. Strange in that ,
There’s little concession in either side no matter what time and facts reveal.
I’d say that’s especially true of one side but it’s not exclusive. The idea that anyone is 100% correct and the opposing view is 100% wrong is so much Bullspit that any adult should be ashamed of themselves for being so gosh darn ignorant and somehow missed what life experiences teach adults about viewing things as either black or white. That’s how a child thinks. Adults who have their brains turned on understand thru experience that the world is a lot more gray than it is black or white. And anyone claiming the extreme side is to be dismissed automatically as they don’t possess the mental dexterity to offer a legitimate argument.

  17. D1 Says:

Sorry the above post was not what I intended.

Covering 9.5 pts was what I was trying to copy..

Interesting opinion on the Rams issues and praise for the Bucs but then Key goes for the biggest spread of the weekend.. That’s how far behind He sees this team.

    Never liked him anyway!

  18. D1 Says:

    Altered,

    I thought the same thing!

  19. D1 Says:

    Touchdown,

Is Jameis starting in any way surprising to you?

He’s our starter. Unless He’s broken in half and unable to be wheeled out on the field….He’s going to be the starter. SO don’t act like it’s a victory lap when winston is the starter for the next 13 games. Or do..and accept you’re the only one who thinks there’s doubt….

  20. Jean Lafitte Says:

    Praises JW – check

    Trashes Goff – check

So if we stop Gurley and Goff is hot garbage then how the heck do we lose by 9.5?

  21. TexBuc Says:

I expected the Bucs to be 2-1, but we are 1-2. The team so far looks the part of their record of 1-2 and will be better has the offense settles in. The Rams are undefeated but their play does not match their record so far this year.

    Bucs win and go 2-2.

  22. Pewter power Says:

Honestly dont know why some of you root for the bucs. It’s real easy to root for another team. Some of you really hate the bucs so I’m confused, no need of complaining that much if you dont plan on making any changes.

Yes they are at the brutal road game stretch but aftwr seattle 5 of the last 8 games are at home people seriously need to child 3 games into a freaking season

  25. Touchdown, Tampa Bay Says:

I’m sorry Jean. My apologies… D1 was the “fan” I was referring to.

  26. D1 Says:

    Touchdown,

Fair! I did post it on this thread by mistake. It’s 100% without context.

If it was too long and you skipped parts, I get it, but it’s not me being critical of winston or the team. In fact, its a call for moderation of both sides and focus on the 99 other things besides the QB.

Unfortunately, it’s Winston’s an MVP or pure trash and everything else that it takes to win as a team is put on a single player.

How you arrived at something different is questionable.

  27. D1 Says:

    Jean,

Thank you Sir. I was trying to say something similar but got distracted and failed.

Keys take is curious considering that Bowles and Arians success was against Jeff Fisher and a completely different team. So how that plays into things is interesting.

  28. D1 Says:

    Touchdown,

I wasn’t complaining about winston. Rather I was pointing out that the emphasis on a single player is way overblown.

Also, the post was to July joe and his comments. Where you read interceptions is a mystery. I never mentioned it and as long as ints are offset by TD’S things should work in our favor. Unfortunately, some fans read more into a post than is actually written.

  29. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

    33 to 20 Rams

Prior to Sunday Leftwich has never coordinated an offensive that scored more than 20 points, he’s holding this team back

  30. Anonymous Says:

Winston is bottom tier, just like last year. Goff has accoplished more in the NFL in three years than Winston ever will. Winston needs to get out of here. Trade him and let’s start the rebuild early with a 2nd rounder we can get for a desperte team.

  31. Anonymous Says:

D1, Winston is dumb. He doesn’t even speak English. Embarassing.

  32. Anonymous Says:

Winston will give the Rams two TDs again Sunday. Bank it. Lose by 10.

  33. kgh4life Says:

the bucs just don’t have the the athletes in the secondary to keep up with speedy wide receivers. The Bucs corners are physical yes, however, not fleet of foot. MJ Stewart, Hargreaves and Davis all ran sub 4.5s at the combines. Jamel Dean and Bunting possess the speed but are either not ready and or injured.

  34. DalvinCookRules Says:

The Rams have the kind of talent the Bucs should’ve had. Fire Licht.

  35. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @D1

Great post! Trying to be even and rational? What a concept on a sports blog. Why that’s like me asking for folks to chill a bit on the hyperbole.

  36. Dapostman Says:

@Jean, obviously you don’t understand how the point spread works. The line of Rams -9.5 points doesn’t mean that the Rams will win by 9 or 10 points. It is set where the odds makers believe that an EVEN amount of money will be placed on both sides. If the line was Rams -5 no one would be on the Bucs. On the other side if the line was Rams -15 most of the money would be on the Bucs. Vegas wants an even amount on both sides. That guarantees Vegas will make a profit on the game without risk.

  37. Touchdown, Tampa Bay Says:

I have no idea what your talking about. AT ALL! I don’t even think you do. I didn’t read any of your previous comments. You commented on my post, because apparently this is your life.

  38. diggler Says:

i got the bucs winning. i just feel they have a good plan to stop running games and Winston has found a good groove. But if Godwin cant go all bets are off.

  39. PriMech54 Says:

God what a POS Keyshawn is…… Everyone knows other quarterbacks don’t throw interceptions… How could he just sit on national t.v. and LIE about that beautiful godsend Jared Goff. I know for a fact he hasn’t thrown a pick because the Rams are 3-0. That’s how football works. They wouldn’t have even lost the Superbowl last year if that trash defense doesn’t give up 13 points. Man do I wish Goff were the QB of the Bucs… He would never even so much as feel pressure in the pocket behind this line, I mean can you imagine how long he’d have back there? His leadership is so great that he would even make his kicker better… They’d never miss a game winner again. Kinda like how Peyton made Vanderjagt into an all time great that would never miss. Peyton simply would not allow it. Not to mention Peyton never threw an int either. Certainly never had over 100 turnovers in his first 4 years. Had some terrible talent around him too… Which brings me back to Goff, that McVay is just holding him back if you want the truth.. What I’d want to see is Goff on a team with an elite running back, an offensive mastermind and the greatest defensive tackle of all time…….. Wow. Can you imagine?

  40. PriMech54 Says:

Alright so now that my “Mouth-Breather Moment of the Week” comment is complete we can really address this.

I’d like to shout out D1, firstly, just for being a poster on JBF and explaining his thoughts and rationale. Bravo sir. You don’t see it happen much on this site, and the ones that do normally don’t stick around for long when they realize they’re dwelling in a lower class.

That being said, in all honesty you are wasting your time, my friend. Why, you ask? Because all you’ve done was explain that Winston is talented and has things he excels at but also not perfect. …yah. No kidding. Which is where the herd is having a disconnect, they expect perfection. If he’s not Patrick Mahomes, he’s stupid and the worst quarterback in the league. Understanding that no quarterback is perfect, interceptions are a part of the game, applying context to every turnover/score, knowing how a system can affect the players on the field and valuing all three phases of the game as a requirement to consistently win in the NFL were all just things that those of us who grew up with a love of the game just came to know. You just assumed that everyone was aware of these really fundamental concepts.

So if these are some of the things you’re trying to relay to the crowd, then be prepared to type your heart out for another 5 years. It won’t matter if Winston doesn’t get the extension, this vicious cycle will happen to any quarterback that comes in eventually. And that’s what’s so hilarious about it all; these people HATE Jameis and everything about his game and feel entitled to a perfect quarterback, when the reality is that they wouldn’t deserve him. They don’t even deserve Jameis, much less a qb the ilk of Brady, Mahomes, Rodgers etc.

They can’t see the forest through the trees.

So just give up, log out and find another Bucs fan forum where you can engage in true civilized discourse with other individuals who share the same level of understanding.

    PreMech54,

    Thank you Sir.

I consider your advise to be fair and accurate. But your post is the type of commentary that proves that their is a great group of people on this site.
    Well done Sir.

I wish there was more like you. The only way to find out is to try and let folks sort themselves out into whatever group they wish. At the end of day, we’re all frustrated Bucs fans. We’re not normal, there’s something very very wrong with us.

Who would willingly follow a team that gives us so little for the investment we all make into the team? Not anyone who is well adjusted that’s for sure. Which is why I really dislike calling out my fellow buc brethren too harshly. Yes, on occasion I’m quilty, but that doesn’t mean I don’t recognize and respect my brethren.

Thanks again for your kind words and intelligent reply.

    Anonymous,

Real question. Have you ever seen an NFL playbook? If yes, have you ever tried to memorize it? If you have, you’ll understand.

To your point of Winston’s vocabulary and conversational sentence structure, yes at times its appalling. But that’s not the only method to evaluate how intelligent a person is or his ability to recall information. Yes, it’s a part of how we as a society make quick judgements about others but it’s not always 100% accurate.

As an example, look at Southerners . Northerners would often underestimate a slow talking country speaking southerner because of the way they spoke. It wasnt always accurate but it was understandable.

I’m not suggesting Jameis is an educated Man. But I am saying His intelligence in regards to his position is not something that most people in the league question. In fact, they (current players and coaches as well retired players and coaches) usually speak very highly of his football IQ. That’s not something you hear about with the majority of QB’S. So I tend to think it’s legitimate in this case.

But again, I understand completely where your coming from and can’t argue with you on that point.

  47. BucsBandit Says:

    @PriMech54

Many of us don’t expect a perfect QB. How about just one that doesn’t lead the league in TURNOVERS since he came into the NFL?

Or one that doesn’t struggle with inaccuracy issues?

Or one that doesn’t hold the ball longer than any other QB (proven by stats) which leads to sacks and lost field positioning (which is critical in the NFL)?

Or one that struggles in the Red Zone?

  48. BucsBandit Says:

As Bucs fans, all we can do is sit back and enjoy another losing season.

But at least this season we can enjoy the Jameis Winston Farewell Tour.
