High Praise For Bucs WR

September 14th, 2019

“Damn Chris, I’m glad I don’t have to play against you.”

Joe thinks we have found Bucco Bruce Arians’ favorite player.

All through underwear football Arians thought receiver Chris Godwin could be a 100-catch guy. Arians never did back off from that prediction.

And with the departure of malcontent DeSean Jackson and Adam Humphries, Godwin elevated to a starting role and has not disappointed.

Through two games Godwin has played more like a No. 1 receiver than a No. 2 receiver (just like Mike Evans said he was). He had a damn fine game Thursday against the Stinking Panthers. And Arians, when he took to the podium yesterday for his day-after presser, without prompting, singled out Godwin for laying the wood to defenders.

“Chris Godwin got [a game ball],” Arians said. “Obviously, you saw his stats, but he blocked as good as any wide receiver I’ve ever seen in a game, blocking linebackers, defensive ends, safeties – he was a huge part of our running game.”

Now think about that for a moment. Arians has been involved in college and NFL football since the 1970s and Godwin, he said, had the best game of blocking he’s “ever seen” by a receiver.

Mind you, Arians coached a team with Hines Ward leveling dudes so badly the NFL banned his blocking technique.

That is significantly high praise.

Joe has always been a Godwin fan since seeing him torch USC in the Rose Bowl in Godwin’s senior season. Knowing Godwin has no difficulty blasting defenders repeatedly to open holes for running backs, Godwin’s shooting up the chart of Joe’s favorite players.

Leftwich is going to end Evans 1,000 yard streak. The Bucs have quite a few NFL records and Evans would of had one of the only positive ones.

  2. Bobby Says:

I said when he was drafted he was the steal of the draft. He just needed the opportunity to start and now that Jackson’s gone Godwin will be an all pro receiver. He doesn’t just run his route, if he sees Winston in trouble he’ll come back to get in a spot Jameis can throw to. Too many times I see receivers run their route and if they’re covered they just give up. Godwin finds a way to get open where Jameis can see him. Plus he catches EVERYTHING! Dude is a stud. My favorite Buc.

  3. John Mitchell Taylor Says:

I wonder how many game balls Desean Jackson has received in his career for blocking? Godwin is the complete package and is poised for a huge breakout year. BA & staff are focused on every facet of football beyond statistics and it will and already has had a huge impact.

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Godwin is definitely getting open more than others……I’d like to see some action with Brate & Howard……where have they been?

Oj Howard has been the worst player for both teams each week. Howard is giving Dotson a run for his money as most embarrassing player in NFL…. oj is another ok player that low standard bucfan labeled a beast before he actually accomplished a damn thing on the field…. low standard bucfan hand out greatness labels faster than libtards hand out welfare

Obviously giants having a home game in tampa this week this will not be the week little oj gets back in track…

  6. Bculaw Says:

Week two of a new, very complex, offensive scheme. Saw the same thing under Gruden. Relax. Enjoy having complimentary football for the first time in a decade.

  7. Jim Says:

Well, Penn State, right? A solid guy from Bruce’s neighborhood (York, Temple).

  8. Defense Rules Says:

Agree 100% Joe … Chris Godwin is a beast. He and Jameis seem to have a special connection, much like Jameis did with Adam Humphries. Godwin through 2 games is 11-for-15 for 174 yards & he’s got the only 2 TDs in the passing game to date. That’s a beast.

Mike Evans isn’t off to a rocket start this year like last year, but if I remember he was feeling poorly (with the flu or something similar) in the first game, and the effects may have carried over to the second game. This year he’s 6-for-13 for 89 yards through our first 2 games. Last year he was an amazing 17-for-19 for 230 yards through the first 2 games. Pretty sizable difference in terms of opportunities, catches and yardage. Still, he’s ME13 … he’ll no doubt get on-track soon enough IF the opportunities are there. Byron seems to be using him quite a bit differently than Dirk did.

The WR who concerns me the most is Brett Perriman. He’s now been targeted 9 times and has 2 catches for 10 yards through 2 games. That doesn’t cut it in anybody’s world (and especially BA’s world I’m sure).

And for all the peeing & moaning folks have gone through over our TEs, both OJ and Cam have caught just about everything thrown their way. OJ’s 4-for-5 for 32 yards (well below his average) and Cam’s 4-for-4 for 18 yards (well below his average also). So maybe it’s more play design than it is them not catching the ball?

  9. Armybucsfan Says:

No one is questioning Godwins ability. The problem lies with jameis getting over excited when the pressures on from our inept O-line and he throws a perfect INT to the waiting arms of a defender. Arians and Leftwich limited jameis on those types of plays throughout the whole entire game. This proves they do not trust jameis nor should they.

  10. Anonymous Says:

    Godwin>Michael “Pedestrian” Thomas

  11. orlbucfan Says:

Best adjective for Godwin is ‘ungodly.’ And……..it’s only going to get better.

  12. Bucs Fan Since ‘76 Says:

Godwin is good, no doubt, but the O is feeling the effects of losing Hump. Perriman literally cannot catch. I do not recall ever seeing a ball go through an NFL receiver’s hands untouched until Perriman on Thursday night. Maybe it’s time for Bobo’s Chance at the 3. Just saying.

  13. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

“…but he blocked as good as any wide receiver I’ve ever seen…”

Thats only bc BA never got to see Michael “Hands of Stone” Clayton!

On a serious note, I agree with TBBF. I would like to see a little more action with OJ and Brate. Or maybe BA is saving that?

  14. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

^^^ Speaking of OJ, how does such an incredible talent play 92% of the snaps vs the Panthers and not catch one pass, but gets flagged twice? And in his first game, basically the same deal, OJ fumbled and let a ball bounce out of his hands causing an INT!!!

Come on OJ, time to pick it up bro. We know you are more than capable of dominating. Lets see it

  15. Destinjohnny Says:

This guy is 100% on every level a baller
Has the will, skill and determination
    Stoked to have him

  16. Bobbo Says:

As long as Evans keep soaking up the best corners and causing safeties to keep tabs on him, Godwin can hit 1000 yards this season

  17. 813bucboi Says:

    dewey

BL isnt going to end his streak….

if it ends, it’ll be because JW is spreading the ball around, running the ball and not playing from behind all the time…..

im sure mike would rather have a 850yards and a playoff appearance vs 1300yards and watching the playoffs yet again….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  18. TampaTown Says:

I’m beginning to get alittle worried about Mike Evans. Even when he makes a catch he never stays on his feet but goes right to the ground.

  19. widerightandleft Says:

Evans will still get his 1000 yards! They are just going to come in clumps .160 yards one week and 50 the next.

  20. Buddy Says:

So now Grandoa Bruce is calling out players like OJ in the media?? Shows why he’s never won a championship as a HC.

  21. Buccfan37 Says:

Godwin has replaced Evans as the #1 go to receiver. No slight on Evans but seeing is believing. Godwin showed this ability from day one coming to the Bucs. What an exciting duo to have catching passes!

  22. NOSBOS Says:

DR I just read an article on Yahoo sports. BA just called out OJ. Says “he can play a heck of a lot better”.. I agree.

  23. NOSBOS Says:

And Buddy your assessment is absurd bro. OJ is not the QB so I fully understand yelling at the backup instead of the starter when he isn’t performing up to snuff. But OJ on the other hand is currently looking like his head isn’t all the way in it right now. So a very public “call out” is precisely what the Doctor ordered. Get it in gear or we need see what’s good wit Tanner. That White chocolate raw.

  24. NOSBOS Says:

See to me BP is playing like trash calling him out would be a waste. He wasn’t drafted by Tampa and was pickup to play a small role here over the off season. He’s replaceable see BoBo who I feel is ready or Justin. OJs skillset will be needed thru out the course of this season.

  25. Eric Says:

Gotta give some kudos to Jason on this one.

He has some good players sprinkled in this team.

  26. DooshLaRue Says:

I love the guy’s ability, attitude and work ethic.
He can and should be a #1 receiver.

  27. Go Bucs 72 Says:

Godwin and Whitehead are my guys! Both those dudes are going to pop some people every week. I loved it the other day when Whitehead (accidentally) punched Olsen in the nose. GO BUCS!!!

  28. unbelievable Says:

Remember the nasty block Mike Evans threw on Terrance Newman his rookie season?

Our WR’s should be blocking like that on every play! That was one thing that drove me crazy under Dirk… seemed like our WRs did no downfield blocking anymore.

  29. Cometowin2 Says:

Been impressed with Chris Godwin from his rookie season. We have 2 #1 receivers. Both Chris and Mike Evans will get their 1000 plus yards. Both can make the HOF with a little luck, long career and a good quarterback. I hope that is Jameis but I’m nervous about giving him all that money unless plays like Thursday pretty much every week. Get him a QB coach that can calm him down. Seems to get nervous or too hyped up. Has a lot of his disastrous games in games that are important to him like nationally televised games, season and home openers.

Also what’s with the squinting? Can he see long distances? May be the reason his accuracy on his long ball is bad. Used to see this all the time in college.

  30. Buczilla Says:

Licht hit a home run with this dude.

  31. Buchead407 Says:

    Love me some godwin

  32. WestChap Says:

Godwin has delivered all that was promised before the season. Still waiting on OJ and Perriman. If we ever get 2 of those 3 hitting on all cylinders with Mike and a just average running game… watch out.
