First Up, San Francisco

September 1st, 2019

First thing is first.

Though the Bucs got a rare three-day weekend off as the suits comb through the hundreds of unwanteds searching for a gem under a rock, the coaching staff has but one focus before a week from today at the Den of Depression.

And that focus is the 49ers.

On Friday, Arians was asked if he is game-planning for Carolina in Week 2. Of course, the Bucs travel to Charlotte to face the Stinking Panthers a week from Thursday night.

Arians replied he’s only worried about one team currently. This week’s foe.

“We play week-to-week,” Arians said. “We don’t worry about Week 2. We’re in Week 1 and then we roll the dice for Week 2. Thursday night is what it is.”

Arians said for a road team playing a Thursday night game, there really isn’t time to have a padded practice because of the quick turnaround to get out of town.

“You really don’t practice that week – you walk-through,” Arians said. “Because normally you would start a Wednesday routine in practice, [but] you’re on a plane and going to the game [on Wednesday], so it’s a whole different ball game.”

The good news is the Bucs get that Thursday game out of the way quickly. And you have to figure since it is Week 2, the team shouldn’t be too beaten up.

At the risk of sounding ridiculous, these first three games of the season are critical. After hosting the Giants in Week 3, the Bucs embark on a brutal road schedule that keeps them away from the Den of Depression for nearly two months and includes two trips to the west coast as well as to London.

Joe fears if the Bucs are less than 2-1 when they start that road schedule, by the time the team returns to Tampa Bay Nov. 10 to host the Cardinals, any wild card hopes would be lost.

I’m not sure what to make of SF at this point. Their receivers are not elite by any means but they have an excellent TE, a good RB, and a decent FB. I don’t think this will be an easy game for the Bucs (none of them are easy) but they should win this game, IMO.

  2. kyle Says:

agree ^ d-rome. I look for an improved bucs defense to keep the game close and a slow bucs offense to make a few plays in the 2nd half to put the 9ers away. Bucs win 24 – 17.

GO BUCS!!!! ITS FINALLY HERE, GAME WEEK!

  3. No Risk It No Biscuit Says:

Dude we are already doomed…..Bosa is playing!!!!!

    The season is over.

Let’s start talking about the draft!!!!!!!!! Smh

  4. The Buc Realist Says:

I can’t believe that the Bucs are only 1 week away from the LOSING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Jeff Says:

I can see the game going two ways. One of the teams wins in a blowout. The loser has 3+ turnovers. You know, Buc Ball.

  6. geno711 Says:

Sure you want a good start for the Buc’s but it is not necessary to go 2-1 to make a wild card. When Arians joined the Cardinals, they were 5-11 the year before he arrived. His team started 3-4 that year but finished 10-6.

When he took over for Pagano in 2012, Indy was 2-2 and he went 9-3 the rest of the way.

The head coach speak of play week to week is they only way teams become good. Good teams are always better at the end of the year.

    New England in 2001 started 1-3 and won the Super Bowl on Tom Brady’s 1st year starting. 2002 they were 3-4, 2003 2-2, 2004 4-4, 2012 1-2, 2014 2-2, 2017 2-2, 2018 1-2.

    Jameis will outduel Jimmy “GQ”

    Bucs win by 21.

    Go Bucs!

  8. NPRSageBoy Says:

Still looking for OL help. Where are our starting RG/RT right now?

  9. BFFL Says:

Geno I agree. People put too much importance on week 1. Koetter won week 1 last 3 years in a row. Bucs lost week 1 their SB year. I expect a slower start for the Bucs before the team hits their stride with the new scheme. Plus BA will ride these guys hard all season and like you said he has a track record of teams building momentum and finishing strong (opposite of Koetter).

Wild Card Hopes were lost when the team neglected to address the oline and decided to bank on an entire secondary with unproven players. not a single proven starter in the entire secondary…. BS can say all he wants secondary is fixed but that is ridiculous given how young and unproven they are. when a proven short, slow and stupid 1st round bust vh3bust is their leader that is very very scary

  11. kyle Says:

sure hope we’re not tennessee ready!!!! LMFAO

  12. Wesley Says:

    Better pick up some o-lineman.

  13. Rayjay1122 Says:

I give the nod to the Bucs week one. Other than the OL, I think we have the better talent overall. I think we have better coaching and since the 49ers have to fly accross the country and swelter in Tampa heat I guess we will get a tough fought victory. Hopefully we get out of week1 healthy and with a 1-0 record.

  14. Todd Says:

What happens if Jensen goes down?

  15. WyomingDude Says:

@Geno and @BFFL…. you’re both wrong. It IS practical and necessary for the Bus to be at least 2-1 after game 3 given exactly how the schedule and opposing teams are laid out.

No way in h3ll that this team takes a 1-2 record after week 3, takes that 2 month road trip, and ends up any better realistically than 3-5 at that point after week 9 Seattle. And at 3-5, at any point, your wildcard hopes are TOAST.

So…they have to start AT LEAST 2-1, then hope like h3ll they catch some breaks along the way, to at a minimum, go into the Arizona home game at 4-4! Then..there’s hope. Otherwise, there’s not.

you could say the same damn thing about vea, lvd, vh3bust and the rest of the soft arse injury prone bucs…. you post is a classic case of people in glass houses throwing rocks…. bucs have not earned the right to criticize any opponent or expect to win any game.

Our starting QB hasn’t won at home since the stone age. Let’s not act like there is some huge home field advantage to Raymond James stadium, and being gone 6 weeks is crippling…

cancer93 was giving up the booty at home LONG before Jameis arrived. this team has embarrassed itself long before jameis pal…

Don’t know why but I’m feeling pretty good about Week 1, even if Vita has to miss it I’m pretty comfortable right now calling Week 1 a W.

  21. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

Marshall Newhouse should be picked up immediately to add veteran depth at G (our RG sux by the way) and he plays T on the Oline as well. Newhouse started 72 times out of 116 in his career , and has intimate knowledge of the Panthers. Trading for an inexperienced and oft injured T from Steelers is not going to cut it. Football games are won and lost in the trenches , and the Browns game exposed our glaring weaknesses on the Oline. Failure to execute veteran pickups at positions of need after the last cut is a huge deficiency under LICHT BRAIN.

  22. RustyRhinos Says:

Round 1! Let’s hit them in the mouth all 60 minutes. Make them not want to play us again. Fight them for every single blade of grass.
Bossa no Bossa, GQ QB or no GQ QB, Kwon or no Kwon. Bring it! Line up and beat on them.

  23. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

If ever there was a “must win” in Week 1, this is it. Bucs simply have to beat the Niners at home. If they can’t do that, it could be a really long season that will be over before you know it.

  24. Defense Rules Says:

I wonder how many people would have said at the end of last season that going into first 2019 game that our defense would be a strength but we’d be concerned about our offense. Quite a turnaround.

You haven’t earned the right to have your opinion matter. STFU already. I can imagine what a joy you are around family and friends (if you haven’t run them off) with your constant negativity. And, YES, there is no doubt that you are a pessimistic big mouthed PITA in all other facets of your life.

  27. BetterBucFan Says:

I think we’re going to get pounded by SF. We were shut down by Cleveland because they simply overpowered our o-line. the 49ers also have a fantastic front 7, just like the browns, Jameis is going to get sacked at least 5 times. I’m calling it now. Save this comment.

  28. tmaxcon Says:

    Brandon

do you feel better after your rant little man… i have been a bucfan since 77 i have earned the right to say whatever the hell i want… what you call negativity is reality.. this franchise is a joke and so are the 1 year wonders low standard bucfan calls legends…. wake up sir the truth hurts….

  29. BA FAN Says:

Tmaxcon, I have been a Buc Fan since ‘77 myself and was in the Ole Sombrero and watched the Buc’s first playoff game against the Mighty Philadelphia Eagles who had a chance to win the SB that year and the Bucs had a poor OL then too but a good OC named Joe Gibbs who was brilliant enough to design QB roll out plays for our QB which the Eagles didn’t plan for. I bet you didn’t even go because you were probably predicting the sky was falling then too, right? And you missed the lowly Underdog Bucs whip the Eagles to win their first ever playoff games. You underestimate what a football genius Coach can pull off despite a weak OL when they design special plays the other side never saw coming and couldn’t prepare for. BA is a football genius with a defensive Coach genius too. Trust BA he always finds a way! San Fran will lose!

  30. BA FAN Says:

What Joe, my comment waits moderation! Go ahead and checkout everything I just wrote. It is all true!

We beat the 9ers with a 45 yard Matt Gay field goal.
