Daniel Jones Vs. Todd Bowles

September 20th, 2019

“Hello, rook.”

Earlier this week, Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians said on SiriusXM NFL Radio that one reason the Bucs have been playing good defense is their talent on that side of the ball.

Joe’s been hearing this for years from various coaches and yet the Bucs continue to lose and lose and lose some more. So pardon Joe for believing he jury is still out. Still, the early results are promising.

Of course, Arians also lauded his defensive coordinator Todd Bowles.

Albert Breer of theMMQB writes that the Giants feel good about Jones facing the Bucs at this time of his very young career. However, Breer seems to think the Giants in general and Jones, in particular, may be walking into a trap.

And the guy ready to spring the trap is Bowles.

The Giants loved how Jones could take a hit and keep coming, which is one reason why they believe he won’t be fazed with starting as a rookie. I would say this, though: Bucs DC Todd Bowles will be planning for him. Bowles has squeezed a ton out of a group that’s not overly talented, and he’s aggressive as can be with his fronts, which should challenge the rookie.

Well, for the most part, the Giants have a lousy offensive line. Not as bad as it was but not good at all. We saw what Vita Vea and Ndamukong Suh did to a decent offensive line in Carolina last week. So Joe expects Vea and Suh to be in the Giants’ backfield regularly Sunday at the Den of Depression.

The key with the Bucs defense will be the linebackers. Just a hunch that Lavonte David may spy Saquon Barkley. If the Bucs can force enough third-and-longs to take Barkley out of play in the run game, the Bucs should have a good shot.

Yep weeks in and there’s been a lot of love for Bowles and the defense; and deservedly so…. But I’m a Bucs fan and it all just feels too soon. Now we get rookie QB on desperate team. Come on Bucs! Prove me wrong and restore the fearless optimism!

  2. Clw JB Says:

Just as it should be, our success is tied to the Defense dominating

Bring the heat early and often on both run and pass downs

Run the ball down their throat and only throw 25 passes at most

    Bucs win again

  3. TheBucsAnthem Says:

This has TRAP GAME written all over it!!!!!!!!!

It’s ashame that Devin White isn’t playing because he need his blazin speed with Barkley in the backfield.

Daniel Jones will not miss passes like Cam did last week…….he’s deadly accurate and has excellent ball placement….and gets the ball out quick.

Llike I said before…..expect Jones to dink and dunk with short and intermediate passes all the way down the field.

This game will truly tell all Bucs fans if our secondary and LBs are truley excelling in Bowles defense.

  4. JAB83 Says:

Anybody other than me remember the 1997 season???

    “Hulihan” Stadium got blowed up!!!

    Bucco Bruce uniforms got retired!!!

Ronde was a rookie!!! (I think?)

We went like 10-5 and beat the Lions in the PLAYOFFS!!!

    Couldnt beat Farve…

This team feels like 1997 all over again to me!!!

    Shaq = Hardy
    Vea = Sapp
    White = Brooks
    Whitehead = Lynch
    LVD = BEAST

  5. Bird Says:

    No way in hell

Teams are scoring at will on giants
They are hot garbage and starting 1st time QB . They will be picking 2 behind dolphins. We got a lot of road gAmes coming up but NFL gave us some nice matchups early on to work out the kinks.
We should be able to put up at least 25 (the bills put up more says it all) or we have problems on offense

Cause we know what are defense can do.
    RIP Daniel Jones.

  6. Ndog Says:

So we have Hargraves, Nassib, Vea, Suh, Bucannon and White who are all 1st round picks. Then we have Dean, Stewart, Murphy-Bunting and Davis as 2nd round picks. That is 10 players that were at least top 2 round draft picks. Then we have Whitehead, Edwards who were also drafted fairly high and guys like LVD who has had an outstanding career and guys like Shaq and Stewart that are free agent whole pluggers. People think this defense isn’t talented because of the HORRIBLE Mike Smith and while this is not the most talented defense in the league to say we’re not overly talented, yet again show people don’t actually do research or know what they are talking about when it comes to our team. Don’t forget excellent role players like Gholdston, Allen and Minter.

  7. Bobby M. Says:

Interesting comment overlooked was that Bowles is making this work despite the lack of talent he’s inherited not the other way around. Emphasis on stellar coaching not quality talent. Teams will have a feel for Bowles by week 6, then we’ll know what we have. Right now I think he’s doing a great job of letting the defense play fast.

  8. Darin Says:

    Ndog
Nassib was 3rd round and LVD was 1st also i believe. I get your point tho and agree. Mike Smiths D had no shot. Woulda made any player look bad. This team has loads of talent. Hope they can keep coming together and improving game by game. Go Bucs

  9. DB55 Says:

I have visions of Marcus Mariota vs Lovie smith in my head

  10. ModHairKen Says:

If there is pressure, Jones will fold. If there is not, Jones will be the latest in a long line of rookie QBs who embarrassed the Bucs (Mariota, Geno Smith).

  11. Bob in Valrico Says:

There is no doubt that Smith was ill prepared for his 2018 defensive roster and the rash of injuries. He failed to make the adjustments that Duffner made to
improve the defense somewhat. That said a number of the replacement players were so lost they should not have have been on the field. That was last year and has little bearing on this year.

One big change there is far more depth than the defensive roster of last year.
Another big change is the experienced players sprinkled into the roster to help lead the less experienced players. The only plus from last year is some of our starters gained valuable experience. And quite possibly A GM learned that he
has to do a better job of choosing players capable of performing well when.
the next man up is needed.

  12. Jeff Says:

It’s a coin flip. Bucs will need to play their best to win. Good Jameis must show up.

  13. Ndog Says:

My bad on Nassib I don’t know why I was thinking Nassib was 1st round with the Browns. LVD was a 2nd round pick but like you said it’s irrelevant in the sense that LVD has already proven he can play.

  14. Bob in Valrico Says:

One thing I did not understood about Mike Smith was the weekly meetings he was supposed to have with Kwan. Smith seemed unable to recognize what he had in LVD and lost an opportunity to get valuable imput on the team.

Duffner got LVD involved in discussions about how they were going to defend teams and the defense improved somewhat given all the injuries.

    __________

I remember and I was there!
Last game at the Sombrero and we beat the Lions 20-10 for the wild card.
I have that feeling too that this is the turn around on D that we need.

If JW can just keep from sh!thing on himself we have a legitimate chance this year.
Make him a game manager and then draft his replacement.

    #quethenuthuggers

  17. FortMyersDave Says:

JAB83, I hear you though the ’97 team started with a string of wins to start the season.

Before everyone piles the the BAnthem we have to recall that this is a common response for a Buc fan after a win this past decade; the team will read its clippings (40-7 loss AZ) or they will play a guy like Keenum, Foles, Cousins, that Carolina QB (Moore) etc….who got wealthy thanks to Smith, Lovey, Koetter’s ineptitude. Have to take one of these rookies and school him like the Titans schooled Jameis in that one game that Marcus Mariota actually looked like a franchise QB…

Kobe: I hope uou are wrong but then again you are correct in that Jameis and the O need a better game than they had vs SF and in Carolina to insure a win. Go Bucs!

  18. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We have both talent and a very good coaching staff…..

I am looking for a complete game from the offense and defense Sunday…..playing well on both sides of the ball….

I am confident we will take care of business….

  19. TheBucsAnthem Says:

……..and I wouldn’t be surprised if “Bad Jameis” shows up again

  20. Rick Says:

This will be a closer game than most think.

  21. FortMyersDave Says:

Rick: if Jones makes plays with Barkley going nuts and Jameis makes mistakes that give them the opportunity then it could be like SF but if the Bucs expose the weak Gman D and get a lead then the Bucs could cover with ease….

  22. TiredBucFan Says:

Everyone sound like fans that have seen way too much losing over the years. We will win Sunday, not even a close game!

  23. Hodad Says:

I think this game is Winston vs Jones. Will Winston play like a four year vet, franchise QB, or will the media be talking about Jones as the second coming? JW has to be the QB who doesn’t look like the rookie, instead of Jones.

  24. FortMyersDave Says:

I hope so TiredBucFan and with the new coaches we have hope, kind of like in ’96 when Dungy took Wyches’ team and after a 1-8 start they played well and went 6-10 and won respect. Defeating the refs, media and the 49er to start 97 set them on their course to being relevant, I was at that game at RJS in section 103 in the south end zone. People were expecting the niners to wake up even without Steve Young or thought the refs would “fix” the game with a flag or 2 or the Bucs to do a “Wyche” and lose it. They won and a turning point was reached. Perhaps beating a bad Giants team that Vegas has listed as a near TD underdog will do the same even though the 19 Giants are IMHO a 4-12 team but lets ride the wave and win!

  25. TOM Says:

    BUCS WIN! BUCS WIN!

  26. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

“It’s ashame that Devin White isn’t playing”

Josh Allen played last night, two sacks. Jags beat the Titans 20-7 with 9 sacks.

Imagine the havoc with JA on the left and Shaq on the right? Especially with Vea and Suh up the middle.

Nightmares for Jones and any QB’s especially the aging QB’s from the NFC South who have been getting a free pass from the Bucs for years.

    Gumpster Fire!

  27. stpetebucsfan Says:

    I’m with TBBF.

I’m not focused on JW’s game…our TE’s…our OL and running game or our Defense….I want to see the Bucs do something truly rare for us in recent years.

I’d like to see a balanced effort. We win on defense…on offense..and on ST’s. A “complete” and focused effort to beat a team we should beat and claim a must win.

  28. 813bucboi Says:

this is a trap game only if we’re not focused on the NYG….

BA will have this team focused and prepared….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  31. Cgmaster27 Says:

@ghost i wouldnt not gump as you say. You’re the genius who fell in love with a runningback whose third string averageing about 2.2 yards a carry. Heck you made a screen name after that third string runningback.

  32. Buccfan37 Says:

Shameful to even entertain the thought that the Bucs go 0-2 at home so early.

  33. Rob Tanner Says:

🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄 this isn’t Buccaneers past all. This is Buccaneers present. Like most decent teams, I think you will see a NFL decent team win the games it’s suppose to win and almost win the games it should lose. It truly is a new day in Tampa Bay. Bucs will contain SB Sunday, and rattle the hell out of the rook. Big scoring win for the Bucs. Score? I would say Bucs win by (at least) 2 touchdowns.

I ain’t believing a single word of how good our Bucs defense is. 2 games in and we are world beaters? BS. One game at a time. Don’t deceive yourselves. This is gonna be a tough game for the Bucs. Real tough. Rookie QB makes no difference. None whatsoever at all. Them Giants will be ready. We had better be as well.

You’re way all over the place here. I like your optimism but your memory is fuzzy.

    RayJay didn’t open until 1998.

The creamsicle unis were gone in 97.

Barber was a rookie but only got into one game, in the playoffs.

The Bucs went 10-6… there are 16 games every season, not 15.

They couldn’t beat FAVRE, with the V before the R.

The 97 team started 5-0. We started 0-1. The 02 team started 0-1 and won the next game under their new coach… this doesn’t remind me much of 02, however.

Shaq is a pass rusher, Hardy a MLB… maybe more like Regan Upshaw?

Vea and Sapp? More like Suh and Sapp… Vea is more of a NT, like Brad Culpepper plus

  38. Mike Johnson Says:

Be ready Bucs. A rook backup in Jaguar country has an excellent game against the Titans just last night. These rooks are recognizing their chance and are playing well. Beware Bucs. Play exceptionally hard. You will need to bring it hard against this young man. He will be ready.

    White is more like Hardy.

LVD is more like Brooks, both were OLBs, though nobody can cover like Brooks, maybe Deone Buchanon

Whitehead is Lynch? One can hope. He’d better be better than Melvin Johnson.

I know one thing, different defense, different scheme, but Carlton Davis could very well be the next Donnie Abraham and Hargreaves can put on his best Barber impression,.

  40. JimmyJack Says:

This is a new Era of Bucs football and this is not the same ol defense. They are not going to get walked all over by a rookie QB like some of our former defenses.

The key to this game will be our offense and playcalling IMO. We are a bottom tier defense. It’s time to open up the playbook. It made good sense to commit to running the football in those 1st two games. Those are really tough passrushes we were playing. Keeping the ball on the ground and keeping the passing quick and short was a nice stragety that nullified the passrush.

Now we got the right matchup to open it up. Not saying we gotta heave the ball down the field 40 times on Sunday. Keep the running get going but mix in some playaction on 1st & 2nd downs. How about a little shotgun hurry up for a drive? Heck, I wouldn’t mind seeing a trick play against a bad defense……Bad defenses are easier to fool.

I expect a different attack plan for this game. If not I’ll be disappointed.

  41. Bucsfanman Says:

It’d be nice, for a change, if we were on the other side of a rookie QB beating! Because I’m a long-time Bucs fan, I have to be careful with too much optimism but I trust Bowles and Arians. This is definitely a team with a different “feel” to it.

  42. TexBuc Says:

Nothing from the 1st two games screams “luck” this defense is playing as designed. Todd Bowles will develop a game plan to shut down the running game.

  43. Craig Says:

    My guess about the game:

    Bucs start slow

Bowles puts it all into stopping Saquan. Jones gets a couple long ones behind the defense.

Jameis tries to close the scoring gap and gives the game away.

Jones starts a legend of doing a Foles on the Bucs.

  44. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

I love all you people that say this is a “trap game.” This freaking team has not been relevant at all for a decade. How could the 1-1 Bucs possibly face a trap game? They simple answer is they can’t. And all you dolts would be saying this team absolutely stunk if Hargreaves doesn’t stop McCaffrey before he scores.
