Report: Jason Licht Got A New Contract

August 17th, 2019

“Jason, we love you, man.”

It’s a safe bet that general manager Jason Licht himself never would have imagined five years ago when he took the Bucs job that he’d get a second contract extension following a 27-53 record.

That would have been pure fantasy, but today it’s reality, if you believe a new Tampa Bay Times report claiming the Bucs reworked Licht’s contract back in January with new terms for 2019 and guarantees through 2022, plus an option for a 10th Bucs season in 2023.

#OnlyTheBucs

Man, this Licht guy is blessed — and Team Glazer must really believe Dirk Koetter and friends were one crappy coaching staff.

Lots of potential speculation here. Did Bucco Bruce Arians ask Team Glazer for security that Licht would be around for at least three years? Possibly. Does Team Glazer just like Licht and his price tag? Possibly.

Regardless, contract terms mean little to Joe. Licht doesn’t count against the salary cap and, of course, Team Glazer could fire him at any time, or hire a football czar over his head.

Still, this was a bold move by Team Glazer, one they didn’t have to make.

This should at least end speculation that Licht will make moves this season based on his job security.

  3. Cobraboy Says:

I doubt Arians would have taken the job if he thought Licht, a guy he respects, was a short-termer.

This extension does not surprise me at all.

This is jarring to the senses. So many question marks and unfinished stories on personnel side. Not many exclamation marks, smiley emojies or happy endings in the books yet. Hopefully 2019 proves Glazers right, for all our sakes.

  6. Ocala Says:

Yes Joe the last staff did stink.

  9. StonedBuc Says:

Jamies winston is next, unless they franchise tag him. But from what i know about winston he isnt trying to break the bank with his contract and will take a team friendly deal. I remember back in his rookie season when he saidnhe would take a pay cut to sign some players. Dude just wants to win football games. Unfortunately that hasnt happened all too much. Next year we solidify the trenches in the draft.

Depth takes years to build and right now the bucs are doing that by extending licht. If they brought in a new gm yhey would clean house and it would be another 3-4 years to get depth. Good older players dont want to sign to a losing team as depth players.

2 more years amd the bucs will be NFC south champs.

  10. TampaBay55 Says:

The truth is the Glazers know it was the coaching last season. They are the ones closest to the team and privy to the most information about the team. COACHING. Expect big things this season. Big things.

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Didn’t surprise me at all….possibly the 5 year term though…..thought 3 would be appropriate……Licht will be here as long as Arians & Co…….that was a given.

So, fans……bitch, gripe, moan, cry, whine, complain, weep, sob, wail, whimper, shout, scream, protest, grumble, bleat, yowl, cuss and vomit……

You are stuck with Jason for a while.

  12. Pete I Says:

Well the rot has always started at the top since Malcolm’s stroke. The Glazer kids are not their dad. We shall see…

  13. Buc4evr Says:

Congratulations Mr Gump, you have fooled the Glazers yet again.

  14. tmaxcon Says:

More proof glazers have zero intentions on fielding a winner

  15. Tval Says:

You have to trust, especially after Jameis and Bruce have seemed to hit it off, that Licht can now help put the proper pieces around the two. Howie Roseman wasnt very well respected, a couple years back, and now he’s arguably the BEST gm in football. He rebuilt the Browns AND the Eagles. 🙈🙈😂😂😁😁

  16. mark2001 Says:

“Team Glazer must really believe Dirk Koetter and friends were one crappy coaching staff.”

Bingo…Why not? Many of us do. And if this D is in the middle of the pack this year, and the O is in the top 5/10, who wouldn’t?

    Blackmail?

  18. gotbbucs Says:

What makes anybody think the next GM would be any better?

    Bruce Allen, lying idiot.
    Mark Dominik, …..really?

Who’s this shining white knight that some of you think is dying to come to the storied Tampa Bay Buccaneers franchise and turn things around?

This is an entry level job or a last pay check job for NFL executives. Just pray that Licht cuts his teeth here and eventually builds a winner before he moves on to a team that the football world actually cares about.

  19. tmaxcon Says:

The political equivalent would be trump hiring pee wee herman for secretary of state

  20. mark2001 Says:

I these guys win 9 games this year, can’t wait for all the guys dogging licht and “team full of busts”, sound like they were on board with Arians and company all along, exhibiting selective amnesia. Good management is a complex skill…one which many people never experience in their lives. We have that now…haven’t had it since Tony and Gruden. Arians may be even better, in that regard. So sit back, watch, and enjoy.

  25. thefinalf33r Says:

Very undeserving of a extension, win first then we’ll see, but I can’t imagine BA & co. would be too thrilled the man who brought them to Tampa is out after one year

  26. tmaxcon Says:

I want to apologize to pee wee herman fans. Pee wee herman was a bad example he’s far more successful and more credible than bucs franchise

  27. StonedBuc Says:

They re-signed him once they say the GAY jersey sales go through the roof. Prob used that money to sign him. Now tampa is at the forefront of woman in football and the LGBTQ community.

The bucs are so progressive and are making money. The only thing the glazers care about.

I really think that if a good coaching staff, which is what I believe we have, can make Licht draft picks like Hargraves, Vita Vea, Matt Gay, Jameis, Chris Godwin, Ronald Jones, MJ Stewart, Bunting, etc… reach the potential we think they have…………than this will reflect well on our GM. If we suck and look terrible than……….get ready for the lost decade part II

  30. Jonathan Limpchimpi Says:

It’s very telling given the secrecy surrounding this. I’ve been guilty of such things in the past…hiding a “curvy” girlfriend from the public at large. 😉 Break out the skunky Jason Light Ale…a decade long deal a la Jon Gruden with Oakland.

  33. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

Words alone can not express my disappointment.

    God help us

  34. Defense Rules Says:

Cobraboy … Does really surprise me either, given that BA likes to professionally surround himself with folks he’s familiar with. I don’t blame him for that, I used to prefer the same ‘back in the day’.

That said however, Jason Licht today isn’t the same GM who was hired by Lovie Smith back in 2014. He’s grown quite a bit I think as a GM (5 years with the Bucs will either do that to you or you’ll be flipping burgers at an all-night diner). I’m still not enamored with his 5-year results, but ‘you are where you are’ as they say, and if BA trusts his decision-making then I’ll go along (reality is that BA is getting pretty much exactly what he wants in terms of personnel actions it appears).

  35. ed Kerber Says:

I actually think this is a great move. Now it is time to finish the job. we need another DE and CB. then scan the waiver wire for o-line and RB help

  36. Sumosam Says:

Jason Licht has brought in a lot of good players here and I’m sure had previous coaches force him to bring in all offensive players. Much of this is not his fault. The Glazers need consistency somewhere in the organization. They seem to have found it in Licht.

  37. webster Says:

I love the fox news commentary/spin by tmaxx. If that helps you sleep better at night

  38. July Joe Says:

The haters better prepare for the JAMEIS WINSTON EXTENSION COMING!!!!!!!!

  41. Ptwalk Says:

Jason has done a good job, we have all the talent we need to be successful but just lacked the proper coaching. We haven’t seen this defense with Suh, Vita, JPP, and Lavonte. Can’t imagine how good this defense will be when those guys are back.

  42. tmaxcon Says:

    Ptwalk

you are counting on jpp and the mentally weakest lb in nfl history lvd to contribute this year… Ok… optimism is one they but that’s just delusional thinking.

by the way if jason did a good job he would not be sporting a 27-53 record…. I know, I know if you judge that record using bucs standards that is a pretty impressive record

  43. Bucsfanman Says:

Licht better be sending envelopes with money in them for every holiday and every one of BA’s family for life!
I’m going to cross my fingers that this doesn’t blow up in our face. Whatever happened to EARNING your paycheck?!

  44. Ndog Says:

This is wonderful news! Is he perfect no BUT you don’t become a great organization by changing course every 5 years and anyone with eyes can see the issue here has not been the talent it has been the coaching despite what’s the J O E S will tell you. This is also more evidence that the Glazer’s hired Koetter not Licht cause if Licht that would have been a hard mistake to overcome.

  45. Barbosa Says:

This has BA all over it. Good for him, if he rises, his guys rise with him. If he fails, his guys are with him. A leader of men, finally, is back as a head coach in Tampa.

  46. D-Rome Says:

What a disgrace! The only explanation here is that Backstabbin’ Jason Licht must have compromising photos or information on Team Glazer.

If Jameis Winston doesn’t pan out, and there’s a real possibility that he doesn’t, you mean to tell me the good ‘ol Backstabber will have another opportunity to draft another franchise QB? No GM in the NFL can survive missing on their #1 overall pick. No GM should be able to survive 27-53 and missing on a franchise QB!

  47. D-Rome Says:

and anyone with eyes can see the issue here has not been the talent it has been the coaching despite what’s the J O E S will tell you.

The Bruce Arians era is 0-0. No one has really seen what this team is capable of yet for better or worse. We just don’t know. Training camp and pre-season games is not a good way to tell either.

  48. Ocala Says:

    Extend Jamies next

  49. Ndog Says:

D-Rome one 100% serious question and one I already know the answer to. Do you think Lovie or Dirk did a good job? I mean seriously and are you going to admit when you are DEAD WRONG about Licht when these guys labeled as busts play well under a real coaching staff?

  50. Bucsfanman Says:

Ndog- I know what you’re getting at but lets be clear, either a player can play OR he can’t. Coaching isn’t going to fix ALL our problems. The fact remains that GMs are judged on their ability to build and field a good product. Licht’s record speaks for itself.
Because he’s been retained, we will HAVE to get behind him. What choice do we have? Obtaining a real coach doesn’t wash away years of inept management.

  51. Pickgrin Says:

    Smells like….. STABILITY

The 2019 Bucs may not be world beaters – but BA and his staff of coaches – along with Jason Licht WILL transform this downtrodden franchise into a winning organization over the next 2 years.

And Jameis Winston will be the center piece – so don’t be surprised when Jaboo gets a new deal sooner than later as well….

  52. JimmyJack Says:

This is the Front Office that Bruce wants and the organization seems to be taking a stability approach for the first time in a long time.

Starting to feel like their is a long-term plan here. Bruce may not be our HC for decades but I bet their are successors in place and a true long-term plan for all the Front Office people within the team.

This is a much different approach then what this team has done over the past decade and it’s got my full support(mainly because Bruce is the brain behind it).

I’m done calling for people to be fired on an annual basis. And I don’t care what happens in the immediate future. I will fully support this longterm plan & will am happy the the kneejerk Era of this team is said and done with.

This is a new Era and its foundation is loyalty. I will trust in this process while y’all get into a tizzy with every statistic. I will still get angry and I will still get bitter but I will refuse to indulge in the kneejerk answers this orginazation has ingrained into us!!!!

Let the Bucs get good then we can be great!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  53. JimmyJack Says:

Bucsfanman……..To throw a wrench into your can or can’t argument I will bring up tackling……..Tackling is a fundamental and something any professional defender can do. It does not take ultra talent to make a tackle.

Then you look back at last season and it took a turn for the worse on that Pittsburg game. A game we win with proper tackling. With fundamentals……..There we’re missed tackles all year on this team and cost us wins. Does not take talent to fix fundamentals.

Aside from tackling their are other fundamentals that cost us wins. A good example is pentalties because it’s been something Bruce has piblically spoken about each preseason game. A quick look at statistics show that we had a marked improvement from game 1 to 2(but still not good enough)……..Make no mistake. Coaching can make a large difference reguarding fundamentals.

  54. RTG Bucs Says:

This franchise desperately needs some continuity so this is a good sign.
    Well said JimmyJack!

  55. Wesley Says:

    NO PLEASE GOD NO!!!!!!!

  56. tmaxcon Says:

rewarding 23-57 is laughable. anyone trying to justify another bone headed move from the glazers is just making excuses and living in denial. this team has not won a single meaningful game in 17 years and has not had a consistent winning team in franchise history…. one good year under mckay and one good year under gruden is not consistency people.

  57. Ndog Says:

So I guess everyone ripping Licht doesn’t like Evans, OJ, Marpet, Vea, White, Brate, Godwin, Barber, Jameis, Dean, Hargraves, Smith, Gay or Edwards. You see no matter how good the player if he is not put into a position to succeed he will fail.

Close your eyes and picture Peyton Manning running the Wing T offense. That is the equivalent to asking Hargraves, Davis, Vea, Spence and others playing that trash we played the past few years.

  58. D-Rome Says:

I mean seriously and are you going to admit when you are DEAD WRONG about Licht when these guys labeled as busts play well under a real coaching staff?

Ndog, very few people in life are more willing to admit they were wrong about something than me. The frustrating thing is that this team has proven me right time and time again.

I don’t think Lovie or Dirk did a good job but I think Dirk was worse. However, my point still remains that the Bruce Arians era is 0-0. I happen to think this team is less talented than last year and I predict this team is going to go 6-10.

I’m very willing to admit I’m wrong about this team and the backstabbin’ GM but the Bucs have consistently proven me right.

  59. JimmyJack Says:

D-Rome that is fair and you are defientally have a point about lessened talent now that Kwon, Djax, Hump & Gerald are gone.

Seems obvisous you are in wait and see mode and that begs a question for me……..What are you expectations for this team? Both short term and long-term?

That question is also for anybody else that is in “show me” mode.

  60. JimmyJack Says:

My expectation is winning record. 9 wins no less.

I may not be the norm but I happen to like this team and the players. I see enough talent.

    QB-check
    WR-check
    TE-check
    DL-check
LB-half check since OLBers have prooving to do.
    DB-question mark, very young
    OL-question mark, unfilled potential
RB-not a check…….as much as I love Barber he is a downhill bruiser which rarely (maybe fairly) get recognized as pure talent.
K&P-Ill go ahead and give the early check.

Can think of a ton of other teams that can’t get half that many check. More then enough talent to win in my book.

  61. JimmyJack Says:

As far as predictions mine is 11-5.

I bumped up my 10-6 prediction once Gerald went to Carolina giving Suh the advantage and gifting us a free win as we sweep them this year.

And it’s not easy to predict a sweep on Carolina given our history. Thank You so much Gerald.

  62. Ndog Says:

DJax is addition by subtraction in many ways.

you meant to say: cancer93 is addition by subtraction. djax just wanted to win which is impossible in tampa the black hole of the nfl that has no hope… cancer93 was a fraud.

  64. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    ROFLMAO!!!!!

I like it. I’ve been saying for years, outside of one draft, Jason Licht has been great in the draft. He’s worked some fantastic trades. This is the FIRST YEAR that cap has been an issue at all under his hand, and if he works things out next year, he will be handling it fine.

His free agency has only been around 50% successful (unfortunately the most expensive have been his failures), but he’s always worked it out so that the risk is no more than a year with free agents outside of Jackson, who was a two year risk.

When it comes down to it, the only thing that can really be held against him is the wins and losses, but can it? If Arians turns this team around, he will prove we have the talent to succeed with the picks Licht has made…so that’s on previous coaching.

This is good news to me.

  65. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    tmaxcon Says
    “rewarding 23-57 is laughable.”

Yeah! I can’t believe Jason Licht didn’t coach those players better!!!!!

    Oh wait…

  66. Clay Travis Says:

JAY-MISS IS GETTING A HUGE EXTENSION SOON … NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

STRATEGY SESSION ON THE 64′ AZIMUT TONIGHT BOYS … ME AND @Magadude will be there early with the costumes and toys!

  67. Bobby M. Says:

Licht had the opportunity to pick any HC he wished…remember Koetter was thought to be headed to the 49ers for an interview…Licht picked Koetter…He gave Smith an extension, traded up for a kicker, etc…The list goes on and on but it’s not my money and if the product sucks, I can change the channel.

  68. JimmyJack Says:

Ndog I totally agree with that but if the discussion is talent without bias then you must admitt we are a less talented roster without Dsean…….To say otherwise is just a lie.

  69. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    JimmyJack Says
“Ndog I totally agree with that but if the discussion is talent without bias then you must admitt we are a less talented roster without Dsean…….To say otherwise is just a lie.”

If I may, Jackson is afraid of hits and drops a lot of passes. He won’t fight for the ball either.

Everywhere he has been, this has been an issue. His numbers have always been inflated by his getting a very large amount of opportunities. That’s not talent.

His only true ability is speed, but his inability to catch a lot of passes offsets that ability.

  70. JimmyJack Says:

Bonzai the unfortunate part of your argument is that, yes, Licht has done well in the draft finding players and starters at a much higher clip then league average but if all of those drafted players are only good enough to peddle out 5-11 seasons then it has all been fools gold and those draft were much more flop then we have been led to believe.

Finding players is all fine and dandy but if all them players can do is lose then it’s been a failure in every sense of the word. Otherwise I don’t understand the ultimate goal of sports.

Bruce HAS to win with these players. Otherwise Lichts drafts have all been failures. Kinda simple really.

  71. Red86 Says:

Congratulations Jason! I’m rooting for you to succeed!

  72. JimmyJack Says:

Nonetheless the argument is if we lost talent by losing Djax………Maybe you think Perriman(his replacement) is everybit as talented. Maybe you think he’s better. I would have to disagree. Losing Djax hurt the Bucs in the talent department IMO.

But as Ndog eluded it could be addition by subtraction. If the Bucs could gain a better attitude without Djax we could wind up being a better team without Djax and without his talent. Contrary to many Buc fans I do feel that talent is is not the only ingriendt needed to win in this league. And not necessarily the most important thing.

  73. mark2001 Says:

Tmax…two things…Obama didn’t talk about pardoning him. And secondly, Blago was pay for play..all about cash in his own pocket…brazenly…sounds just like the Don, doesn’t it?

  74. Buczilla Says:

Good decisions made by the Buc’s ownership are few and far between. I hope that this is one of them. Light isn’t the worst gm ever, but I would have waited to see how this year went first.

  75. D-Rome Says:

Seems obvisous you are in wait and see mode and that begs a question for me……..What are you expectations for this team? Both short term and long-term?

JimmyJack, what I want and what I expect are two different things. I want a winning season where the team makes it to the playoffs. I want to see Jameis Winston throw for 30+ TDs with less than 10 total turnovers. I want to see Jameis become the player that I saw take over a home game against Atlanta as a rookie where he pretty much said, “We’re not losing this MFing game.” Where did that Jameis go? I haven’t seen him in years.

What I expect is a 6-10 season. I expect Jameis to perform more or less the same as he has the past two years and leave the Bucs with more questions than answers. I expect for us fans to see once and for all how Jason Licht has set this team back over the past five years.

  76. BucsFan727 Says:

This is a position we know nothing about and that is working for the Glazers. They like him and he didn’t cook thay crap last year but he did help buy the groceries. And if it is true Vita started playing more aggressive because of talking to Licht. That just shows Koeter was way in over his head. We should progress as the season continues.

  77. JimmyJack Says:

D-Rome…..I urge you to raise your expectations. I urge our fanbase to do to same.

If we expect ten losses that means we are content with ten losses. If we are content with losing then our desire for winning wanes. When that happens we become a non-factor at Ray Jay and we hurt our home field advantage.

Acceptance of losing is all fine and dandy here(on Joe’s site) but when it spreads to the Stadium it becomes a problem. Us fans can provide motivation to Our players and we have failed as a whole…….Yes we have failed for good reason but we are also embarking on a new Era of Buccaneers football.

All’s I can say is if you do not expect this team to win then please do not buy a ticket. It hurts the home crowd when that negativety is spread………We got a new Era of Bucs football trying to start their mission and they deserve a fanbase who is willing to help them,………..You may not realize that your low expectations and snide remarks are hurting them but it very much does. It’s just a bit tougher to play in front of a dejected crowd. In a game of inches every bit matters.

  78. JimmyJack Says:

Also DRome feel free to answer the 2nd part to my initial question which is long term expectations………..Which In retrospect I only asked to see if you had any expectations for Our franchise whatsoever. Would very much hope you do. No expectations long or short term would be pretty detrimental.

  79. LunaC Says:

OMG!! Confirmed, the Glazers are complete idiots!! Clueless is the being kind to this group of rich kids; Licht is such a FRAUD!! Look at the record, drafts, the situation now that he’s afraid to make any moves to further reveal his incompetence (not addressing the O line and RB), etc, etc. Just look at the latest draft (after all the garbage drafts before)… once again, SECOND ROUND, and he drafts Sean Murphy Bunting!!??!! Have you watched this clown??? He couldn’t start for Plant High!!
I moved here in 2007, and immediately became a Buc fan. Regardless of the mediocrity, we went to games, bought some team gear, supported the team. I now officially give up. This franchise is doomed to the ignorance of the Glazers… and I will now root against them so change can finally possibly happen. Thank God I have College, Fantasy Football and other sports (except for Man U lol) to take over for this ridiculousness…

  80. Denjoe Says:

    effin idiot glazers!

  81. diggler Says:

Worst franchise in the world bar none.

  82. Bucsfanman Says:

Coaching was not our only problem. That’s all I’m saying. We haven’t done anything well in a looooooong time. Licht’s part of that!

  83. mark2001 Says:

Wow…I can’t believe the hemorrhoids some of you guys are having. It will be OK. Lovie called the shots during his years…and his personnel decisions stunk. Koetter couldn’t develop a young player if his life depended on it. Arians is calling the personnel shots now, in discussion with Licht…and Arians knows what he is doing. He believes in Licht…but of course you all know better than he does.

Bruce… what we have to put up with from these youngsters….Wow.

  84. Doctor Stroud Says:

I take the opposite view. A contract extension is bad for Jason Licht and a sure sign that he is going to be fired. This is a typical Team Glazer move. Team Glazer loves to pay people not to play, coach, or manage with multiple years remaining on their contracts.

  85. Rod Munch Says:

If him and Arians is a package deal, then I’m cool with it. Also it’s not like the Bucs won’t fire him regardless of the contract. I’m OK with having some consistency, and from a players contract standpoint he’s done a good job for the most part. From a drafting standpoint he’s mostly done an OK job, and if the corners turn out not to be trash, if it was just Mike Smith’s awful defense that was the issue, if Spence is suddenly a starter, if Cappa is a starter and doesn’t get Winston killed, then his drafts are going to look a lot better. Also Winston IS getting a new deal and isn’t going anywhere, and he is the franchise QB they’ve been looking for since Doug Williams. So take all that into effect, if the Glazers think Dirk was just a garbage headcoach, and clearly the Glazers pushed for Dirk to be the headcoach, this could be them saying now you have all your guys in place, no excuses.

  86. Pryda...Sec147 Says:

Next up is Jameis!!! literally been saying they would extend him for all summer so much haters on this site! Jason has grown each year learning getting better Dirk was not ready to be a HC

Pryda… Dirk will never be ready to be a HC… doesn’t have the personality to be one. Seems everyone knew it for decades but us. And don’t spoil the pity party of the naysayers, that were on the Lovie bandwagon, in spite of his year on the couch eating crow flavored chips when no one but the Bucs would give him a call. This is Jameis’s big chance…hope he makes it. We all win if he does. This staff is doing everything possible to give him the tools to do so.

Word out of Carolina is that their 3rd round pick WILL GRIER, the guy that genius @Magadude said the Bucs should have drafted to replace Jameis, can NOT even beat out their 3rd string QB Tyler Heineike, let alone second string QB Kyle Allen.

There is a reason people like @magadude are just bs-talkers on forums … they have NO CLUE WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT!
