Pray For Jameis

August 5th, 2019

Be afraid, Bucs fans.

In a podcast that only accountants can love, a pair of spreadsheeters suggested that no matter how much some Bucs fans lie awake at night dreaming of another Bucs game where America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, does not start, those same fans may want to reassess.

Mike Clay joined the “Bill Barnwell Showto do your taxes to discuss quarterback situations and both men are adamant Bucs fans ought to be scared as hell for Jameis to go down. The two noted that Ryan Griffin has never taken a snap in an NFL game and essentially stated Blaine Gabbert should not be on an NFL roster.

Clay noted Bucco Bruce Arians’ offenses have a history of having quarterbacks dinged up. And if the Bucs need to rely on Gabbert, Clya and Barnwell said that would be the time Bucs fans really want to hit the bottle.

Barnwell pointed to Week 17 last season when the Titans, facing the Colts, needed a win to keep their playoff prayers alive and Gabbert messed the bed with an awful performance.

“We saw that in Week 17 last year Tennessee needed a big game from Gabbert,” Barnwell said. “He just didn’t have it in him. I don’t think you can rely on Gabbert to be an effective quarterback. That just has not been the case for his entire career.

“At this point, you can say pretty confidently that he is absolutely a last gasp, totally desperate, emergency option.”

So for you Jameis haters that scoff at him throwing 30-yard completions, like some guy had a hissy fit about with Joe on Twitter yesterday (you prefer 30-yard incompletions?), and those avowed folks so bunched up in the pants about Jameis starting they throw rocks at moving traffic, careful what you wish for if you want the Bucs to do anything this season.

Gabbert, per the spreadsheeters, is not the answer.

I mean, yeah. Stats alone and his W/L record should be enough to make you even question the decision to sign him. other than being a guy thats been in the league a while, i still rather have someone like Griffin as our #2. At least he hasnt developed bad habits like Gabbert has over his career.

  2. Mike10 Says:

Good thing we didn’t build the best roster possible, and instead make sure Jamie’s “wasn’t looking over his shoulder”.. am I the only person that’s never heard of that in pretty much all of pro sports?

  3. DooshLaRue Says:

    Gabbert is garbage.
I’d rather roll the dice with Griffin if JW gets suspended……I mean injured.

  4. Bucsdelight Says:

Depending on how the season starts before the break, I can see us in the race for Trevor Lawrence (assuming he declares for NFL). If he doesn’t, then we franchise tag Jameis for one more year and get Trevor.

  5. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Wouldn’t it be something if a guy who never threw a pass in an NFL game ended up being the next Tom Brady?

No one expected Brady to be as good as he has been.

  6. DBS Says:

So if they are never going to play Griffin why is he even still here? He should be able to be the backup by now.

  7. The Buc Realist Says:

Careful what you wish for??????? The only reason the buc’s had to have the worst backup QB’s in the league is because the the fragile game manager folds like a lawn chair with any backup that can complete a pass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And for those that are worried, it is last place in the division either way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. Clw JB Says:

Let’s pray Gabb only sees the field in mop up duty after the preseason – enough said

It is funny I don’t personally think this is the best team Licht has given a coaching staff but I have a lot of faith in BA. I hope he is the coach we think he is or we are toast. Backup QB like Fitz was a luxury I wish we still could afford.

  10. Bobby M. Says:

Teams with good QBs aren’t dissecting how their back up scenarios will play out if the starter goes down. Only teams with mediocre QBs are examining that and its well documented having a competent back up QB was intimidating for Winston….which is another conversation great QBs don’t engage in.

  11. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

Yeah, let’s stick with Jameis “5-11/Turnovers” Winston. That works.

  12. Destinjohnny Says:

Jameis is very tough and very brave so he is going to get knicked.
I like jameis in so many way but I just don’t think he has the consistency to be a top 10 qb. I hope he proves me so so so wrong though.
Ps we aren’t a playoff team

I don’t put faith in anything sports related but I agree with you. The 2019 Bucs are not the most talented team put together during Backstabbin’ Jason Licht’s reign of terror.

  14. Anonymous Says:

Drool, I would suggest consecutive 5/11 season is already toast. That said put me down for at least a wildcard this year. And BA’s jump ball comment, well wasn’t it T. Monken who told Jameis to throw a a tall player a tall ball? In the endzone, sure. Good idea. Between the 20’s? Not so much.
In BA I trust. Go Bucs!!
Final thought: I see the Panthers imploding (see Raiders) and Brees getting hurt. 4-2 in div, plus Jameis improves his road record.

  15. Bob in Valrico Says:

with competition at every position except QB, BA has gambled on Jameis
durability. Gambles usually come back to bite this team. Should of had better competiton at QB to be safe.

  16. DB55 Says:

Come on man. Let’s cut the bs and get Kapernick in for a workout.

  17. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I frankly don’t understand the situation with Ryan Griffin…..maybe it will play itself out this year….
Why have we kept a roster spot open for him & a 3rd QB for 3 years and not given him any opportunities?
He should be the backup or be gone!!!…..put a rookie on the PS & go with 2 QBs….

  18. Race to 10 Says:

Duh who doesn’t need their starting quarterback. People sure do eat up everything the media tells them. Winston doesn’t have a fragile mental personality, he has issues with inconsistency. If you have two quarterbacks you have none. No point keeping fitz when he cant more than two to three games stretches before he starts playing worse than winston. BA is smart enough to know he should ride with his guy and not overpay journeyman

  19. webster Says:

Trevor lawrence is not eligible to come out next year!! Man the dumbest fan base strikes again

Meanwhile… In Miami… A HOF QB commands “reverence” from his teammates.

  21. 813bucboi Says:

    realist

fitz was just as trash as smittys defense….lol….

if fitz was so good, he wouldve went to JAX not MIA!!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  22. Bucs14 Says:

6-10 at best, here we come!

  23. Reach87 Says:

Bobby, you should read your post again. If you don’t think every team in the NFL is concerned with their back-up QB you don’t live in reality. Also, for the Gabbert critics (garbage, doesn’t deserve to be in the league), once again you are quick to throw salt on a guy who is on your team. And he hasn’t even played a down for us this year. Standard. Bush. Go Bucs!

  24. Tye Says:

Jameis groupies – praying for Winston to remain the starter no matter how bad his playing…

Actual Bucs fans – praying the Bucs get the best qb that is possible to make this team winners!

  25. BigHog Says:

I know this for sure (sheep herder) Blain Gabbert ain’t the one and should not make this team!! GO get a running style QB and let the competition begin!!!

  26. Eric y Says:

All the quarterbacks on this team can’t win joe … so buc fans definitely need to hit the bottle come sunday

  27. Eric y Says:

    September*

  28. Jean Lafitte Says:

We’re only in this position because Joe and his Winston apologist ran off the best option we had in a backup last season. Remember Joe is the one who suggest that Winston needs a backup that he doesn’t need to look over his shoulder and feel threatened that he could lose his job to a backup. So in comes Gabbert, and now Joe wants to manipulate this as some kind of “I told ya so” moment. smh

  29. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

    TYE….AMEN!!!

  30. Figures Says:

“Go get a running style QB”

Lmao how stupid. I’m not even gonna try explaining how running QB’s don’t ever last long.

  31. Dapostman Says:

    @Tye,

The best QB on the Bucs is Jameis Winston. You like the others with WDS want anyone other than Winston. Be a man and admit it. You want someone else QBing the Bucs.

The folks who are behind Winston aren’t all groupies. Like watching Tiger Woods some of us like to see Americans redeem themselves after personal failures.

Go Jameis Winston!! Stick it to the haters.
