Just About Everything Bruce Arians Said On The Jim Rome Show Yesterday

July 25th, 2019

On the eve of training camp, head coach Bucco Bruce Arians opened up to the nation on The Jim Rome Show.

Joe has all your need to know.

*Arians likes the retention rate of the rookies who reported for training camp Sunday. “It’s a heck of a class and it just adds to the excitement of getting to Friday’s practice.”

*Arians said his life feels much more normal as a coach versus being a broadcaster: “I can say what I want to say now the way I want to say it.” He noted that being in the booth had him thinking too much before he spoke.

*On why the Bucs should rebound from back-to-back 5-11 seasons. “I love their work ethic,” Arians said. He referred to the many “close losses” of the past two years and says he sees a team that wasn’t far off. “Play smarter. Make a field goal. … You win the game.”

*The fix for Jameis Winston it feels simple, Arians said. “Put a better team around him. Make kicks. That’s been a bugaboo around here for a while. Just put a better team around him so he can play quarterback, he doesn’t have to be Superman.”

*Arians says players love how he has their back and the “easy part” of coaching for him is to get guys believing in all aspects of the system, and he does that through his daily approach to talking to them.

*What will make and fix the Bucs culture? Rome asked. “Accountability. It’s just simple. Be accountable to each other,” Arians said. “All your decisions that you make have to geared toward winning and winning a championship.” He went on to reference his famous daily accountability sheets and explained it’s about calling players out in front of their peers so they learn how to do it on their own. “Holding them accountable in front of each other so they hold they hold each other accountable.”

*Defensive personality is so “major,” Arians said. “No risk-it, no-biscuit stuff, that goes to defense, too. It’s just how we live.”

*Chris Godwin “is going to get a lot of single coverage” and “should fit perfectly.” Arians said “he’ll never come off the field” because of his versatility.

Getting Pumped! Thank you for bringing this to us Joe!

For all you negative nancys out there. Get ready to enjoy a significant.improvement on the field and a healthy dose of Crow at the end of the season.

Looking at you El Bucco Pessimisto!

    In BA I Trust!

  2. ncbucsfan Says:

Hell yeah Sport!!! I’ll go one step further and predict 11-5 NFC South Champs!

  3. Dreghost Says:

I love the fact that B.A. is bringing accountability to the team! It’s simple, hey if you suck then you just suck and you shouldn’t be on the roster. I think Winston will be fine if he can get a running game begins him and stop forcing plays. Also i would definitely like to see Claiborne get added to the secondary. I see us being a .500 team this year as an experimental season for BA then next year *2nd year for BA* go BIG! deep in playoffs or bust season GO BUCS

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I like BA’s positive outlook and public statements….I’m quite sure he has no problem pointing out players’ mistakes…..he’s a good leader and teacher and I suspect his staff is also.
Sure…..prove it…..but so far, so good!!!

  5. Magadude Says:

    Just “meh” on this.
“I love their work ethic,” and on “close losses” and seeing a team that’s nots far off. Deja Vu. Heard that before.

Yeah, good words, but it’s common sense.

Same as “Play smarter. Make a field goal. You win the game.” Wow, if only we knew. Kinda like, now go out and draft the best kicker in NCAA history. What could go wrong?

Glad BA is making the rounds, but everyone loved Lovie and Koetter. Heck, in 2011 Pat Kirwan picked the Bucs to go far because “of Josh Freeman” and they are “So well coached” (by Raheem Morris).

I’m glad it’s time to start building a record. We’ll be so much smarter in January.

In retrospect, how Raheem got the Bucs to 10 wins with that roster (should have been 11 and the playoffs) is a modern day miracle.

  7. stpetebucsfan Says:

Ego can be our worst enemy. It’s next to impossible to fix any problems or mistakes without first acknowledging them.

If BA figures away around their egos…and most importantly if he can get this team to be truly selfless enough to become a GENUINE TEAM…we have the talent…we have the coaching and I’m prejudiced but I believe we have the fans as well.

If the Bucs win ten games this year RayJay will once again rock and be much tougher ticket.

I’m the optimist and I realize in almost anything I approach in life I’m in the minority. Perhaps it’s just more fun to be negative? In fairness to Buc fans blasting their team here they may just be blowing off the steam of a vast frustration.

Just win baby and the fans will come…or as they said in that baseball movie….Build this team and they will come.

^^^Not turning the ball over is a miracle Joe?! Freeman was fire that year. Ah so much hope dashed after that year. Had such high hope for Freeman. 6 picks all year 6!!!!

  9. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

    I wish he’d wear a real hat.

  10. D-Rome Says:

Arians is going to be on with Rich Eisen today.

  11. BucAllNight Says:

    ncBucs:

I’ve been saying it all along…

“Let’s enjoy the ride to 11-5”

Todd Bowles is our wildcard… Just hope he doesn’t bolt after one year

He will be a hot commodity by this time next year

  12. SoFloBuc Says:

    “Accountability. It’s just simple”

That used to be done by players Sapp, Brooks, Lynch ect. in the Super Bowl era. I assume it will work for a coach too…I hope!

  13. Louis Friend Says:

Making more FG’s would NOT have made the difference for the Bucs last season, fewer penalties wouldn’t have tipped the scales either.

I respect the hell out of Bruce Arians. More than anything, how he got the Cardinals to 8-8 is a bigger miracle than Raheem at 10-6 in 2010. The Cardinals lost 6 games by 10+ points that season and went 8-2 in all others. By NFL standards that’s a HC who’s walking on water.

But what he’s facing with the Bucs is different than what he’s talking about. For instance (posted on my @jprowell Twitter feed):

Turnovers more than ANY other reason, including defense, doomed the Bucs in 2018:

    1. Outgained opponents by 150+ yards 5 times in 2018. They were 1-4 (OT win over CLE) and averaged 3.75 turnovers per game in them.

    2. Held opponents to under 300 yards 3 times, 0-3 record, -5 TO differential

During the Bucs eye-popping offensive yardage outbreak weeks 6-11:

    1. Averaged 476 yards per game (1st in NFL), surrendered 362 (18th)

    2. Out gained opponents by +114 yards per game

    3. Committed 3.3 TOs, 34 points off

    4. 1-5 record, 39 point differential

    5. Bucs red zone turnovers week 6-11: 5 (+1 turnover on downs)

A lot can be made about bad defense and bad kickers, but the defense played well enough to win considering the massive 8 ball the Bucs offense put them behind numerous times last season.

Fix the turnovers, fix the Bucs.

  14. Louis Friend Says:

The 2017 Arizona Cardinals at 8-8, by the way.

  15. Clodhopper Says:

Reading this is so much better than having to get it while listening to the idiotic monotone robot voiced Jim Rome talk.

    Thanks for the sacrifice, Joe!!

  16. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Clodhopper

I remember the first time I heard Rome and had your reaction.

Then came all the schtick…”clones”…stupid names for cities like calling Cincinnati the “Nati”. I grew up in Cincinnati and NOBODY called ever said “Nati”.

Having said that Rome is an acquired taste. If you like his schtick and he does some entertaining interviews perhaps…but I agree he does have a poor delivery.

  17. Buc50 Says:

    I wish he’d wear a real hat.

How can you not like his hat???

  18. Bucsfanman Says:

Real coach= real coaching. Expect better Tampa Bay. Times, they are a-changin’!

  19. SOEbuc Says:

    TBbucfan

“I suspect his staff is also”

Yeah I’m thinking this entire coaching staff that he knows so well knows how to show accountability and this team is hungry.

    SUPER BOWL: BROWNS(16-0) VS BUCS(16-0)

  20. BA FAN Says:

The question is what should we expect out of BA his first year here. Don’t you think we need to know how well BA did his first year everywhere he has been in the NFL Head Coach or OC? Fortunately BucsWire already did that study:

    Bruce Arians Teams
First Season as OC or Head Coach

                                      Record       Win Increase
    2013 Cardinals              10-6              +5
    2012 Colts                    11-5              +9
    2007 Steelers                10-6              +2
    2001 Browns                  7-9               +4

    * Increase from previous season

Now you know what the serious Buc’s fans already figured out but the pessimistic trolls won’t know until this season is a Buc’s Miracle Comeback!
The average increase BA’s first year is plus 5. 10 wins this year would put us in the playoffs and it is no stretch to expect!!! Trust BA!

  21. SOEbuc Says:

The hat is classic sunshine state golf course written all over it. That could be a good sign.

  22. Clodhopper Says:

    StPete

Fair point. There are many people I didn’t like at first that grew on me. Cowherd is one of them.

Also, maybe the fact that the first time I even heard of him was his infamous interview with Jim Everett and that has some bearing on my opinion. That’s a first impression that’s hard to get past. But I admit it was a very entertaining interview just not for the right reasons. 😂

  23. BucEmUp Says:

BUCALLNIGHT, I think bowlrs will stick with dc for a while. Im not worroed about that. My biggest concern is leftwhich calling plays..I hope arians keeps that leash very tight

  24. 813bucboi Says:

    10-6…..

    but i could see 11-5!!!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  25. Pittsshore Says:

Love his positivity. Let’s go Bucs.

  26. Cobraboy Says:

I’d like to see the stat of how many points were scored by opponents after a missed Buc FG and turnover.

  27. Louis Friend Says:

Cobraboy – over the 6 game stretch in my post above 34 points. All from turnovers. Opponents converted 10 points from 7 missed Bucs FG’s into points on the season.

Worse for the Bucs were 7 turnovers inside the 20 yard line. Those aren’t missed FG’s, but they aren’t talked about nearly as much as they should be.

  28. TOM Says:

Here the same thing every year from the head coach. No matter who it is. Say what fans want to hear & sell tickets. So before annointing BA as the Bucs savior lets just wait and see if its year or just more bs. By the way I think Bowles is a hell of a DC but pretty much sucked as a hc. Also don’t have a lot of faith in Leftwich. Like I said we’ll just wait and see. I to am originally from Cincinnati & never heard of such a stupid word as Nati. But what do you expect from Jim Rome.

  29. tickrdr Says:

    @Louis Friend:
    Informative and excellent posts. Thanks!

    tickrdr

  30. WestChap Says:

@Joe, spot on with Raheem comment. I hated that Tomlin-copycat hire… and then felt compelled to admit I was wrong after 10 wins… only to have my heart thoroughly crushed afterward. Even with all the previous puffery prior to the disappointment of seasons past, this staff just feels different… feels like they know who they (and the team) are and who they’re not… not trying to figure out how, just focused on doing what they already know how to do: build and lead a team.

  31. Pancake block Says:

Haven’t listened to Jim Rome since Jim Everett made him curl up in the fetal position on live tv

    …………

True! Didn’t we start 11 rookies that yr or something?

  33. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Clodhopper

Yeah apparently Pancakeblock and I had the same reaction as you. That Everett interview was classic…how many of us were rooting for Everett to bust “Romie” in the chops.
