Inside Jameis Winston’s Work At Friday Practice

June 2nd, 2019

Head coach Bucco Bruce Arians cut Friday’s practice short inside the fancy GlazerShed on the grounds of One Buc Palace. JoeBucsFan.com intern Zach Seifter was tracking all things Jameis Winston for much of the time. The final OTA leading into Tuesday’s minicamp also was held simultaneously with Ndamukong Suh’s news conference.

*QB’s are getting warmed up, taking snaps out of the shotgun and under center before firing the ball 15 yards downfield to a coach. Jameis is already throwing hard.

*The first drill today is the exercise ball drill. The QB’s have to evade the “pass rush” that the exercise balls are supposed to represent. Quarterbacks coach Clyde Christensen and quarterback Ryan Griffin roll and throw the exercise balls at Jameis as he moves around the pocket and throws three darts to the right sideline where there is a coach to haul in all of his passes.

*Jameis steps out and is now rolling balls at Griffin as he performs the drill.

*Jameis comes back in after Blaine Gabbert steps out. He moves around the exercise balls only to fire a pass that lands short of the coach. Not enough on that pass from Winston, but he is able to evade the pressure the next two times and put his throws on the money.

*Next up are vision drills. The QB has to go through progressions and find a coach waiving his hands in the air. Once finding the coach, the QB has to fire him a pass downfield. Jameis steps in and executes the drill flawlessly, going 2-for-2.

*Quarterbacks have to execute this drill a second time, but this time while scrambling around in the pocket. Jameis shows his quickness and footwork by quickly stepping around before throwing two dimes to waiting coaches.

*Same drill moving to the right side. Jameis throws on the run and completes the pass. Jameis looks like a natural when moving to the right side, looks very comfortable. He does this twice more but instead of throwing on the run, he stops and sets his feet before making his throws.

*Now the QB’s are moving left where once again Jameis is perfect. He moves left before stopping, turning back to the right side and then throwing bullets across the field to waiting coaches.

*Suh press conference intermission.

*Situational 11-on-11 work is underway as the ball is placed at the 2-yard line. Jameis in under center and takes the snap before firing a ball over the head of Justin Watson in the back of the end zone. Watson was open but Jameis missed him on the right side.

*Jameis steps out of the huddle before the next play and has a short conversation with Arians. Arians looked very serious and involved during this drill.

*Jameis steps back in and on the next play he fires to O.J. Howard on a slant for the touchdown.

*The offense sets back up at the 2-yard line and on the next play, Jameis goes for Watson on a fade in the left corner of the end zone. Hargreaves was all over it and the pass falls incomplete. But out comes the yellow hanky from the ref as he said the defense was offsides.

*The last 7-on-7 session gets going as Jameis starts things off at the 15-yard line and immediately looks for Howard. Lined up in the slot on the left, Howard broke for a slant but Winston’s pass was tipped and almost intercepted by Carl Nassib. Nassib got his hands on it but couldn’t pull it down as the pass fell incomplete.

*On the next play, Winston is able to find rookie receiver Scotty Miller over the middle for a touchdown. Miller showed his speed as he broke from the corner and got great separation in the endzone.

*Jameis goes for the endzone again on the next play as he finds undrafted rookie receiver DaMarkus Lodge toward the right pylon. Lodge was able to stretch for the endzone and get the touchdown. Second-round pick Sean Murphy-Bunting was in coverage.

*The offense sets up at the 8-yard line and Jameis throws for tight end Tanner Hudson in the endzone but he dropped the high pass. It looked like Hudson stopped running after he made his break on the slant.

*The offense moves forward a bit as the ball is set at the 6-yard line now. Jameis takes the snap and is looking around for what seemed like 10 seconds before he finally took off running. Fantastic coverage from the defense on the last play by the starters today.

*Jameis steps out for Griffin and immediately walks over to Christensen. He talks with him for a bit before taking Watson behind the rest of the team and talking with him for a short time.

*The whole team gets together in a huddle and Arians says that if rookie kicker Matt Gay nails a 52-yarder, then practice gets cut short by an hour. Gay proceeds to sink it between the uprights and the team erupts in glee before heading to the locker room.

Red Zone?……the key to the Bucs’ offense……

I keep hearing Scotty Miller in a positive way…..

Scotty Miller will be stashed on IR or the PS…not near ready for prime time 53…simple as that

  3. NOSBOS Says:

Someone said draft night Scotty Miller will end up on the practice squad. I’m like that someone must not know how much BA really craves speed.

  4. Tom Edrington Says:

internship hell: having to track everything Jameis….

  5. BringBucsBack Says:

Is Matt making these kicks with a defense on the field? Good to hear either way.

    Great job again, Zack!

With any luck, Santos won’t make the final roster. That will save us over a million in cap space right there.

    Woke up bucced up

  8. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Some scouts had undrafted WR DaMarkus Lodge going as high as the second round. Kind of shocked he was undrafted. 6-2 with 4.4 speed.

  9. Stonedbuc Says:

Touchdown OJ! Nassib with the sack!

Going to minicamp Tuesday can’t wait to see

  11. TexBuc Says:

I believe Miller has shown enough hands so far to be penciled in for the 53. His speed is too tantalizing for BA who likes to take shots downfield. If Hump had any speed resembling above average the Bucs may have resigned him. In BA’s offense he prefers larger WR for slot and Hump was too slow for outside and his desire for raise in pay made it a no brainer not to resign.

IMO…Miller will be stashed and get a year paid to weight train and put on some man weight…I am not a betting man…but will go on the record if anyone feels that strong they’ll say BA uses a roster spot on a scrawny speed guy

I’m a fan of Zachary’s reporting. Positive, upbeat and you can tell he’s on the Bucs side… but not putting Jameis on par with Jesus… up on a pedestal… Ready to be crucified if anything goes wrong.

    BREATH OF FRESH AIR!!!
    Well done!

Preseason will make the determination for Scotty, can he return punts?

  15. ManzielMadness Says:

I think we should wait until the pads come on before we declare Miller a spot. Could be another Djax… could be another Kenny Bell, Jeff Demps, Dexter Jackson etc… sounds like he has upside not bad for a 6th rounder.

  16. Pittsshore Says:

Fake news. Just wait until real games begin and the scattered brain QB snaps under pressure.

  17. COACH Says:

Great job Zak will they let you cover any one else or group?

  18. Ndog Says:

Pittsshore since you like to actively root against our team why don’t you go find yourself a new one?

  19. Oneilbucs Says:

Do they put the pass on this wee?
