“He’s A Ray Lewis-Type Of Player”

June 27th, 2019

Comparison.

Somewhere, Joe can hear the screeching voice of the great Mike North hollering, “Slow down!”

Former Pro Bowl defensive back DeAngelo Hall was on “Good Morning, Football,” seen nationwide on NFL Network, when he let out a blast that shook the house in the NFL Network’s Manhattan studio.

Hall suggested an NFC South team just drafted a Hall of Fame-like player and even dropped the name “Ray Lewis” on the “Good Morning, Football” crew, which freaked them out.

Co-host and closet Bucs fan Peter Schrager asked Hall about Bucs rookie linebacker Devin White and Hall didn’t hold back.

“He’s a Ray Lewis-type of player,” Hall said with both co-host Nate Burleson and Schrager quickly hollering “Whoa!” cautioning Hall to slow his roll.

Hall did not.

“He can go. He can go!” Hall responded.

This is what freaks Joe out. So many people are already putting White in Canton and the kid hasn’t even snapped on his chinstrap in a padded practice yet.

Look, White may be all of that and Joe hopes he is. But first thing’s first. Let’s let the rookie learn and earn his position first before expecting him to be a one-man gang.

Joe thinks Derrick Brooks’ advice to White was perfect. Brooks told White, win your starting job first.

    Gotta call out hypocrisy again

Joe – you put Jameis in canton after that Pitt game you watched in college. And Bucs went on to draft.
And have covered him like a HOF qb (calling him America’s quarterback ) ever since. Even going into year 5, he moves your needle.

You just will agree with takes about players you obsess over

You didn’t want devin white so it’s just a matter of time before he has a bad game before you say ….”I told you so”
The kid hasnt even taken a snap yet

Yet Jameis hadn’t take a snap but he was already America’s quarterback. 😂

  2. D-Rome Says:

Everyone needs to pump the brakes on Devin White and this year’s Bucs team. I’ll be happy if he plays 16 games and shows flashes of brilliance.

  3. Clodhopper Says:

Sweet!! Jameis was named Brett Favre before his first snap. Now we have Ray Lewis.

  4. Race to 10 Says:

Ray Lewis “type” is what the tape shows, he didnt say he was the guy. Just because you have every like you afraid of expecting the players and team to have a decent season, everyone needs to keep their fear to themselves. Since when has Player comparison not been a thing? You had player comparison to Winston every week

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Nothing at all wrong with a player getting huge accolades from the media & ex football types…..he’s getting them from our coaches…..
Would you have it the other way?…….everyone questioning our pick?…..in this case, only a few questioned it (Joes)…..but, I seriously think it was based on the position an not the player…..
We needed a MLB…..we needed a serious leader & we got both.

  6. Bucit Says:

I guess you learned your lesson about declaring the second coming of a player since your love affair with JM. Now you can’t seem to be positive about others opinion about a player you would have not picked first. I’m giving Arians his due based on his record in coaching and trusting his judgement which seems to be very high on White. The comparisons are opinions that we all have.

  7. joestang Says:

better to talk up a young player rather than trashing him, hope he exceeds Ray Lewis, he has the talent and desire, GO DEVIN

  8. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Heh. In a ranking of NFL Fans, Bucs fans rank 23rd according to yahoo, as reported on PFT.

    That’s pretty sad.

On topic, I saw that segment on the NFLN yesterday. That’s not all he said. He said that Jameis Winston is the NFC South QB he thinks can become the best QB in the division (under Bruce Arians and Leftwich).

He was really into the Bucs.

  9. Defense Rules Says:

    Spot on Joe.

Backing Johnny Football & America’s QB so passionately seems to have made you more cautious … rightfully. DB’s advice to Devin White was perfect as you said.

Here’s a life lesson for you, Bird…free of charge: The experiences a person goes through in life change their opinions and thought processes.

It does not make them hypocrites. It means they evolve their thinking.

@Bonzai … “In a ranking of NFL Fans, Bucs fans rank 23rd according to yahoo, as reported on PFT. That’s pretty sad.”

But on a more optimistic note Bonzai, how’d you like to be one of those fans who ranked NINE places BELOW us? Or said another way, ‘It’s bad, but it could be worse’.

  12. Todd Says:

White is going to be way better than Ray Lewis, sans the murder.

  13. Lamarcus Says:

Now Joe is all out bashing of the players. Every article is about how garbage each player on the team is and how unproductive they are. Devin White gets a prop but you cold water on that. Smh

  14. Sport Says:

Oh Joe, when will you learn. These players (White, Jamies) will be who they are regardless of what you, jbf posters or national pundits say.

I’m putting my money on White doing his job. That is all.

Its in the past, but I’m still hung up on someone in Lewis’ crew committing murder and next year he’s the poster boy for the NFl. I just can’t comprehend that.

So in that regard, I’m hoping he’s waaaay better than Ray.

    In BA I Trust!

    A very strong point.

Health always seems to be an issue for the Bucs. It wasn’t always that way. Maybe it is climate change, lol.

I imagine a lot of fans are like me at this point (or not). I’m at the point where I want to see it on the field. No more hype.

    GO BUCS!!!!!

    @Defense Rules

    lol.

Rams have the worst. And they are newly relocated.

    “i agree with brooks….

    Who will he compete with?

  19. Big_Buc$ Says:

I saw what DeAngelo said on the show. He is just like every other analyst that doesn’t watch any Bucs game. I agree we are rushing Devin White to the Hall of Fame and he has not played one snap for the Bucs. Yet he hasn’t signed his rookie contract yet, so he may be holding out during training camp possibly. Hall went on to say that the defensive line will be a force with JPP and Vea returning after missing his rookie season. Correct me if I’m wrong but I thought the entire world knew JPP neck had a fracture? I don’t recall Vita Vea missing his entire rookie season I thought he played about 12 or 13 games and the last month of the season he showed he could be a force at nose tackle. Just like all the ESPN analysts that nick pick the Bucs and they clearly have not watched any games at all. If they did they would be able to see that the main issue is the offensive line that has two over payed players not worth their contract but its just what the market is set at. Lastly, I thought Joe didn’t want to draft a LB at 5 and get the best DL available?

  20. Pirates in Pewter Pants Says:

I have to be honest. This really is a non-story, and one I have already read many times this offseason.

“(Insert highly touted rookie here) reminds (so-and-so) of (insert Hall of Famer at the same position) during (insert whatever part of the offseason here)” has to be one of the most tired, overused, and cliched football tropes there is.

It’s right up there with: (Head Coach/Assistant/Veteran player) says (Insert rookie here) already has “veteran presence”.

Or this one: “He’s the first one in the building, and the last one out.”

I salute you Joe. I could never be a sports journalist. I would drown in the cliches.

  21. Barbosa Says:

If he stays healthy, I expect him to be a force on defense. He has not played a single snap yet.

  22. Joseph Mamma Says:

Win your starting job first? That’s hilarious. He was drafted what 5th overall, he will be given starting job, unless he turns out to be the worst football player ever drafted.

  23. Defense Rules Says:

@Bonzai … “Health always seems to be an issue for the Bucs”. So very true Bonzai, and there SEEMS to be a correlation between injuries to starters & key rotational player and wins & losses. It would make sense I think, but it’d be a really difficult analysis to prove conclusively.

One of the things that has me excited about this year (silly actually) is that BA has brought with him some awesome strength & conditioning coaches (as in FIVE thus far). Great spread of expertise though & I’m convinced it’ll help tremendously this year. We’ve already heard how it’s made a difference with Will Gholston’s conditioning, with RoJo’s conditioning & several others. It’ll pay dividends I’m sure.

  24. Bird Says:

    Bonzai

First of all -What are you talking about. Thought you were on here religiously
Joe will still take Johnny manziel as our back up
If he likes a player there are different rules on how he talks them up. Or makes excuses for them. Players he doesn’t will get a sarcastic moniker
    Ask him about John football

He isnt learning anything from any experiences.
That’s for the attempt at a life lesson …I’m probably older then you

  25. Bird Says:

    ^^
    Thanks not that’s

  26. Bucsfanman Says:

It’s always dangerous to label players out of college. We’re all guilty of it though.
I mean, he has to earn it regardless.
It’s high praise and I would be happy if he was anywhere near Ray’s career and play.

  27. 813bucboi Says:

    bonzai

    somebody….

thats part of the problem with this teams mentality…..things are given to some of these players without them having to compete….i understand he’s a top5 pick but damn…..claiming he’s a savior/ray lewis type of player before he even goes thru TC is foolish…..

i think he’ll be a stud eventually but lets pump the brakes and have him go thru TC and PS….

i’ve seen this with keith mccants….

    GO BUCS!!!!

  28. J Says:

Bonzai, kissin Joes a$$ is a great look for you..fitting.

  29. Race to 10 Says:

I thought taking first team repa since the day he stepped on the field proves he has the starting job. First overall picks and even fifth overall are here to start not sit and learn. Stop hating the dude was penciled in the starter since draft day…….just who is supposed to be his competition?

  30. Stonedbuc Says:

We have Brett farve, Ray Lewis, Jamal Charles. Wow we’re headed to the bowl!

  31. voiceofreason Says:

maybe we can go to one post a week about his hype, instead of the daily approach.

  32. Robert B Stonaker Says:

    Joe,

Since people keep comparing him to Ray Lewis, what kind of performance did Ray Lewis have in his first year?

  33. BucAllNight Says:

    GAME recognize GAME
    REAL recognize REAL
    DAWGS recognize DAWGS

If you can ball you can ball…..

I’ll take the words/opinions of guys who have PLAYED the game ANY DAY over those who WRITE about it….

This is starting to seem a little Aaron Donaldish

I TOLD yall we got a SUPERSTAR on our hands but joe cant fathom it cus he wanted us to draft Gaines Adams 2.0

Set back and watch the DRIVE to 11-5

    Go Bucs!!

  34. Prada...sec 147 Says:

They said we would go 0-3 shhhhh we shocked them we’ll do it again. Support BA fill that stadium up!! The schedule is so nice for fans imo the first games are 4pm then 7 week road trip to 1 o’clock games in nov & dec I think it will be great weather I hope 🙂 the cannons are the best !

  35. Famous Jameis Says:

To all of you saying win the job first… please, win the job over who? All he has to do is beat out Deone Bucanon, and saying he has to win the job is belittling the talent level of Devin White. Does anyone else think Bucanon is a threat to steal Devin Whites starting role? Okay, thought so. Devin white doesn’t need to worry about starting, he is worried about how he will elevate the level of play from the other 10 men around him and change the culture of this putrid defense which has sucked for way too long, going back to the Josh Freeman days.

  36. Rob Tanner Says:

Cheese and Rice, the kid hasn’t even put pads on in a NFL practice yet. Let the kid play before we crown his ass and fit him for a yellow jacket. I really like the kids personality, but he hasn’t done squat (I hope and wish he does) but Rob knows better. .

  37. Bucsdelight Says:

As long as he ain’t murdering people…

  38. TOM Says:

I just hope White doesn’t turn into a murdering low life like Lewis.

  39. View from 132 Says:

White is going to plea bargain and bark like a dog, jump on every pile to run up tackle stats, have one big year then play to the media until he’s known as THE Linebacker of the decade? No thanks.

  40. CrackerBall Says:

There is nothing wrong with the Bucs fan base – if you put out a poor product, year after year, there will be grumblings. I honestly don’t know how Jason Licht still has a job. He Rewards and overpays “meh” players to the point that we cannot go shopping to replace them, and he simply misses on too many players in the Draft.

I honestly believe that 5 good fans, armed with nothing more than a case of Red Bull and a Sporting News, could do a better job improving our roster than Jason Licht and his entire scouting department.
