Two Standouts And “One Of The Best Rookie Minicamps I’ve Been Around”

May 13th, 2019

Happy with new toys

Unless Bucco Bruce Arians is talking to media about DeSean Jackson, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Gerald McCoy, among other players, Joe does not believe the head coach is one to deliver phony chatter.

So it was with much delight that Joe watched the official Buccaneers video highlights of the rookie minicamp held Friday and Saturday. In it (below) you can see Arians tell the players that it was “one of the best rookie minicamps I’ve been around.”

Yes, Joe believes Arians and it feels awfully good.

One tryout player who landed quite a bit on Joe’s notepad was Illinois State undrafted receiver Spencer Schnell. So it was no surprise at JoeBucsFan.com world headquarters that he earned himself a new contract. The guy looked like a polished punt returner in practice, at least a rung higher than anyone else out there.

Schnell was an All Missouri Valley Football Conference first-team player the past two seasons.

Another tryout player who stuck with the team and brings a little intrigue is linebacker/DE David Kenney. It seems like he’s 24 years and bounced around in college between Indiana and Illinois State, and he may have been kicked out of school. Even after a little research, Joe can’t figure out the last time Kenney took a snap. Arians noted Kenney was an effective pass rusher in the no-pads world of Bucs minicamp, so he’ll get a shot against Bucs veterans this week.

Kenney was in Colts rookie minicamp a little over a week ago.

Thanks Joe for giving ISU some recognition…. a feat of class from a former Panther. Go Redbirds.

  2. LakeLand Says:

Which rookie won the ” Kenny Bell” award?

    The MVP of “Underwear” football

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Sounds like Bobo will have some competition this year…..

  4. wausa Says:

I like Bobo, but the Bucs need the competition at the 5 and 6 spot for receiver/returner.

Looks like the Bucs were very pleased with their second round picks during the mini camp.

  5. TOM Says:

Sounds good so far. I’m always rooting for the underdog.

  6. The Buc Realist Says:

Of course he said that!!!!!!!! I am sure that he would have told you that his mom made the best apple pie as well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Stevie T is still on our roster……wonder what’s going on with him?

  8. Bob in Brandon Says:

Nice article Joe, appreciate the positive outlook!

  9. Defense Rules Says:

I KNOW it’s not a rebuilding Joe, BUT … if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, yada yada.

  10. Elita Vita Says:

According to a respectable reliable source (Hogans Heros) Schnell means “fast” in German….could be a very good omen!!!

  11. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

May stories…good for picking a underdog to watch and follow in the PS games….

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Defense Rules

    Arians said….not rebuilding but is……doesn’t draft for need…..but does…..

He is presenting this as a “reload”…..whatever that means….”rebuild”…same thing….

I think he wants to establish a sense of urgency rather than desperation.

He is showing confidence in the players….at least for now, and that’s a good thing.

“if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, yada yada.”

    It’s a racist.

  14. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Arians seems to me like the guy rearranging the deck chairs on the titanic while the band still plays and tells you everything is fine

  15. Sport Says:

Rebuild – tear down the foundations and get rid of everything.

Reload – keep the overall structure and make tweaks.

Means he truly believes he has a solid roster and trusts his coaching staff to form the existing and new players to winning ways.

  16. Nicholas Micciche Says:

1 sack in 11 games his last year 2015-2016 at Illinois State per Google. Crazy how they found him but hoping he excels!

  17. German Buc Says:

The UDFA out of Illinois is a special for me – as “Schnell” is the German word for ‘fast’. Needs to be a speed guy though 😉

  18. Magadude Says:

I’m glad Arians was happy enough to canx Sunday’s look. I mean, rookies don’t need all the work they can get in, do they? The coaches know all they need after two days of underwear football, right? Yeah, good enough is fine for cellar teams. Or is it?

Who ran the camp? I thought the HC did? But this camp was one that Arians has “been around” according to his own words, and it was of course, “one of the best.”

Great observations from the golf cart…glad he shared.

I’m just a bit skeptical of this whole thing so far. Burned too many times. I will get excited about the Bucs only when they prove it’s time to.

  19. mark2001 Says:

    German…not Illinois U of I …THE STATE…Illinois State LOL.

  20. ManzielMadness Says:

Better than coming from the University of Illinois… wouldn’t trust any player Lovie Smith evaluated/coached..

I believe he reached an “injury settlement” last year.

  23. BucsBall80 Says:

Yes realist where lacking talent. But theres more talent here than most so called real fans can see. Cough cough. Realist the sheep herder. Coaching matters. Look at the Rams. One year they suck the next there a top team. Yes you need talent. But they need a coach to get all they can out of them. Do you think if we would of drafted Derwin James instead of Vea. We would of been a better secoundary? maybe. But I can guarantee he would of been labelled a bust here. If he would of came here instead. They would of had him 30 yds away from the ball. Coaching matters. It matters alot. And yes talent matters. Are last coach was not ready to lead a Team of men. I never believed in Klueless. When they figure you out your done. They wont play hard for you. We even herd it from Grimes. Some of these haters need to find a new hobby because being a Bucs fan ant for you.If its making your life all doom and gloom. Where you have to come on here to rant to make your self feel better.Your not ready. Its a new day in Tampa Bay.All you sheep herders better get your rocks of while you can.

  24. JimmyJack Says:

If you think talent is the only think holding us back you don’t know Buc football.

It’s not a talent issue when you lose due to a presnap pentalty. Or you lose cause you forget to cover a sideline. Or you lose cause you make a dumb decision on 2nd & Goal. Or you lose cause you miss a XP or a tackle or a block.

These are not talent issues these are fundamentals. You can have all the talent in the world & you still will not win if you play undisciplined and with a lack of fundamentals.

Let the Bucs get good and then we can be great.

  25. JimmyJack Says:

If football was just about talent we would have beaten both Washington and Baltimore last year.

We had more talent on the field but they played better fundamental football and beat us……..Kinda like the Mitch Trubisky effect. He is not a super talented QB but looked like a All-Pro. This was because we played with poor fundamentals………Or how about Adrian Peterson playing on his last legs against us in the desert? He did nothing all year but against us looked like his former All-Pro self. This happened because our players were not prepared did not adjust and played with poor fundamentals.

Face it Buc fans. Fundamentals trumps Talent 365 days per year. Always will……….Just ask the 69 Mets or take a gander at the Tampa Bay Rays who hold the top record in baseball………Need a football example. How bout the Patriots?

  26. pick6 Says:

it’s a shame that they don’t put the pads on anytime before training camp. certain guys get more credit than they deserve for their play and other guys get no realistic shot at being evaluated

  27. Eric Says:

The difference is Arians has the credentials and the gravitas.

    Go bucs.

  28. SenileSenior Says:

In BA and all we must trust!

Jimmy, you forgot the sideline dancing penalty that cost us the Atlanta game. We can never forgot that piece of brilliance.
