Three Years Gone

May 1st, 2019

Salad days of Mike Alstott 2.0.

The fair thing when judging drafts is to wait three years. Then, we pretty much know how players have performed.

But we live in a microwave, drive-up, Amazon-free-overnight-delivery world. People can’t wait three minutes much less three years.

Looking back at the Bucs’ 2016 draft, Eric Edholm of Yahoo! Sports slapped himself around for how he graded the Bucs with a B-. In particular, Edholm mocked himself for how he described a Bucs’ second-round pick.

Funniest line in retrospect: “[Noah] Spence filled a huge pass-rushing void.”

While Edholm patted himself on the back for excoriating Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht for drafting Roberto Aguayo, Edholm admits he was off the mark overall.

How we did: Honestly, not great. We made it seem as if, even if the value wasn’t great, that they landed three “immediate contributors” with their first three picks. While that was technically correct, we in no way were actually correct. We meant “sort of good” contributors, and that just wasn’t the case. It’s an overall miss, even with nailing the kicker thing.

The only thing possibly saving that draft is Vernon Hargreaves. Unless Spence resurrects from the dead, he’s a bust. Caleb Benenoch, pppffftt. Joe suspects Devante Bond is a serviceable backup linebacker (he may be the best tackler on the team).

Remember how some tried to con Bucs fans claiming Dan Vitale was the next Mike Alstott? Yeah, that was a real knee-slapper then as well as now.

Spence skills will be more relevant in a 3-4. It was obvious to everyone who looked at him that he looked more like a linebacker than a d end. He may be the reason they didn’t go after an edge rusher and if not how can anyone really explain it? Don’t say something stupid like licht is the only gm in the nfl that doesn’t like pass rush because he’s tried to upgrade it the last two years dirk was here

  2. BigMacAttack Says:

I’m excited to see what Todd Bowles can do with these players. Pretty excited about it actually. I think they will surprise fans and shock many. He’s the most legit DC we’ve had since Kiff.

  3. BigMacAttack Says:

McCoy is a fool for not striking a deal with Licht and trying to stay in Tampa. But again, he’s all about himself and not the team. That won’t change wherever he goes. Gerald comes first in his eyes.

  4. SCBucsFan Says:

BigMac why would he take a pay cut and stay here?

  5. Doctor Stroud Says:

    A “D-” in retrospect.

  6. Doug Says:

I’m happy we finally have a head coach that can see Gerald MCcoy is a fraud. All of our past coaches would be afraid to hurt his feelings, Bruce Arians comes in and does the opposite. Love it!

  7. TheBucsAnthem Says:

There maybe never will be another A-Train “Alstott”

…………he was a once in generational player, like Warren Sapp

  8. SCBucsFan Says:

Because all of you would take pay cuts so your company could get better. Well, judging by your posts, some of you are on unemployment or disability so you really can’t grab that concept. Asking McCoy to cut his salary 5M dollars for the good of the team makes me chuckle when he can bet on himself, the All Pro he is, and sign somewhere for the same money on a team that has a chance to win. Please show me the error in my logic.

  9. Not there yet Says:

We don’t have a pass rush with Geraldine so not sure why people want to keep him or even restructure his bloated contract. If your gonna let white be the leader of the defense I think they know Geraldine will have to move on somehow. Regardless of the draft picks I’m more excited about this year than any under the last 4 coaches especially that pretender Dirk. So many of us here said last year would be a wasted year bringing him back. BA hates losing so if that is the case I’d be curious how he handles it

  10. SCBucsFan Says:

Joe would you take a 50% pay cut to help out your sponsors in here?

  11. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

The 2016 draft is an F- and can someone explain why licht still is the GM of the bucs after this draft?

  12. rrsrq Says:

I remember call Pat Kirwan of NFL Sirius XM, he even said, keep an eye on your draft pick Dan Vitale, I really like this kid. So the Bucs weren’t the only ones that got, got, except we used a draft pick

  13. Not there yet Says:

The error in your logic is comparing an everyday job to an nfl contract. In the corporate world if your overpaid and not producing at expected levels you’d simply get fired and there is not cap hit just like Geraldine. And also to correct you “ the all pro her WAS” your living like 5 years in the past no offense. If our success as a defense depends on whether McCoy is on the roster then we can simply expect the results we’ve gotten since the day he was drafted. His personal success as a player has not benefited this team in the slightest and only thing the glazers owe him is a paycheck if he is on the team.

  14. Destinjohnny Says:

After 6 Jason drafts we have 5-11 talent overall and are ranked 29th overall league wise.
Maybe I’m crazy but I just hate losing and I don’t see things changing

  15. SCBucsFan Says:

Not there he was Pro Bowl in 2017. 2018-2017 (the 2019 season hasn’t started) = 1 year removed from the Pro Bowl. No offense but do the math.

  16. doctor_berto Says:

Hargreaves is the worst corner in the NFL. The day I lost trust in Licht is when he drafted him over Tunsil.

  17. The Coroner Says:

GMC was labelled a bust his first 2 years.

    No news here:

The Suckaneers suck at talent evaluating and Roster Building.

    That´s why we have an No-Change-to-Win-The-SuperBowl O-line and D-Line.

They sucked since and still suck and the GM refuses to build the trenches
(with good talent; as seen in the last draft AGAIN)

Time to boykott the Suckaneers until the Glazers decide to sign an actual intelligent football mind for evaluating talent and Roster Building.

this is a “professional” Football-Clowns-Team since too long…

but it will never change as long as the Glazers don´t make a move..

but they are either clueless, or not interested…

let´s see and boykott the Suckaneers.

I swear to God this team is gonna suck again this season.

and i swear Licht put this Team back by an year again (in terms of building an good SuperBowl contender)

simply because he seems to refuse to build an actual competetive team, or he simply is too stupid to do so ..

    i dont know – but
it has to be one the two.. stop this sh..it

    Fire Licht tonight

  19. Steven007 Says:

SC, are you really trying logic with this crowd? I’m surprised trollmax hasn’t chimed in with a smattering of words like basement, clown, overrated, Jameson, strippers, etc. Like you said must be nice sitting home collecting that check on the government’s dime while pretending you’re an entrepreneur..

  20. 813bucboi Says:

licht has to go…..simple as that….

    GO BUCS!!!!

  21. Andrew Says:

Vernon wasn’t good when heathy. And now he can’t stay healthy.

The only hope is that press man is truly what he needs, otherwise that draft is a total waste and set our franchise back.

The first round after pick 7 is terrible. Not a Licht fan, But hard to blame him when there was a lack of talent there.

  22. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Bucs fans have always been told how good GMC is and now we are told how great lichts draft picks are and have been and that if we do not understand that we just do not know football. The bucs record shows how good lichts picks are and the record just like his picks are terrible

  23. pabucsfan Says:

SCBucsfan. The error in your logic is that you think McCoy can get at least 13 million on the open market right now. At 31 hes coming off his worst season in recent memory and a lot of people dont see him breaking the bank on the open market right now. I think a fair comparison could be to what Malik Jackson got which was 10 million for this season.

  24. Ben the GA Buc Says:

I literally said this in a comment on another thread a day or two ago (re: Vitale —> Alstott). Happy to provide you some source material, Joe!

  25. SCBucsFan Says:

pabucs I’m basing it on him taking a pay cut but if he gets 7M from the Bucs or 7M from the Browns, Pats, (insert playoff team) why would he stay here? TO stay here he would have to be an overpay.

  26. Chris Simms 2020 GM Says:

In 3 more Licht years the Bucs will be the Washington Generals!

    Fire Licht tonight!!

  27. pabucsfan Says:

Also. He said all pro team not pro bowler

  28. tmaxcon Says:

    The Coroner Says:

GMC was labelled a bust his first 2 years

Based on results and the fact he has captained some of the worst defensive units in league history the BUST label still applies to cancer93…. a decade without a single meaningful win or a single signature game for a top 5 pick is the pure definition of BUST….but low standard bucfan prefers highly ranked defenses and pro bowls over wins and championships

  29. pabucsfan Says:

If pats and browns want to pay him 7M then why not pay him 9M? And you are basing your assumption that he wants to go somewhere to that has a better chance of winning. None of us know any alternate motives that he may have besides the value of the contract. Why stay here? Maybe he doesnt want to move his family? Maybe he doesnt feel hes a fit in teams defense? Maybe he enjoys playing for the bucs? Those may be true they might not be. Maybe he would stay here for the same amount of money that another team offered him or maybe he wouldnt. We dont know the answer to that.

  30. Jerid421 Says:

He was only off by one word: “[Noah] Spence IS a huge pass-rushing void.”

Also, the funniest four words ever uttered are: “Dan Vitale, SUPER BACK”.

    Hahahahahaha…

  31. SCBucsFan Says:

OK, second team all pro 2 years ago

  32. SCBucsFan Says:

PA true, maybe he loves it here and wants to stay. In that case he takes the pay cut to stay as he is surely getting a pay cut. I would agree neither of us, nor anyone outside of Gerald, knows what he wants to do for his future.

  33. Brandon Says:

Vitale made the Browns and has contributed. He was a solid 6th round pick… just not for us.

  34. D-Rome Says:

Remember how some tried to con Bucs fans claiming Dan Vitale was the next Mike Alstott? Yeah, that was a real knee-slapper then as well as now.

That’s because he is a big, strong, athletic guy who is white.

  35. Isaac haggins Says:

    @ doug , Correct

  36. TOM Says:

Whoever said F- was right on. Glazer’s should fire Licht yesterday or sell the GD team. There all worthless.

  37. Not there yet Says:

Yes because I’m the grand scheme of building a winning defense it matters that Geraldine went to a few pro Bowles. Have you not seen this defense get gutted in the run game the last decade? He got close to getting double digits sacks a couple times which got him his 13 million but stop living in the past he ain’t worth it now. Everyone here thinks the defense will suck even with him on the roster so go ahead rip off the bandaid and move forward to a new era. It will make no difference whether it’s this year or next year. The entire win/loss record honestly depends on Winston and the ability of the offense to put up points anyway unless you see these corners getting a bunch of interceptions because I don’t see a bunch of sacks from Geraldine

The funniest story after this draft is the bs from r stroud about how the glazers made the kicker pick. Lict should have been done then. Where is Gilhealy to talk about the speed motor kicks and how smart the kicker pick was?
