Inside OTA Day 3

May 17th, 2019

O.J. Howard

Yes, your beloved Buccaneers were on the practice field for the third time this week!

They are grinding toward opening day. Unfortunately. the people at One Buc Palace who decide what local media can and cannot see shut down OTA Day 3 to media — except for in-house, Buccaneers.com reporters.

Carmen Vitali was scouring practice and wrote up a report for the team website. Joe will summarize your need-to-know here:

  1. Bobo Wilson is getting love from coaches.
  2. No. 4 quarterback, undrafted rookie Nick Fitzgerald, is working with special teams, which spent time on a block-the-punt drill that included head-first dives onto a mat.
  3. Rookie sixth-round pick Scotty Miller makes tough catches.
  4. O.J. Howard yelled at a defensive back for one second.

And there you have it.

From the Day 3 photo gallery on Buccaneers.com, Joe has three highlights:

  1. Peyton Barber is working on contested catches
  2. Vernon Hargreaves was not shown for the second consecutive practice
  3. M.J. Stewart and Ryan Smith share some smiles

Practice resumes Tuesday at One Buc Palace, and Joe and local media will be permitted to watch.

I have another brief update. Tiger Woods second tee shot landed at the 50-yard line at One-Buc Place. Helluva drive, just to the south of the green a bit.

  2. University of Seffner Says:

Pretty sure Vernon Hargreaves is on the accountability sheet.

  3. 813bucboi Says:

    accountability indeed…..

this week it was VHG….who will it be next week?….

if its no one, then the message is getting across to the team…..

    something dirk failed to do…..

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  4. louden Says:

    oh man, all so worthless:

Whoever follows the Suckaneers and wants them to become the Buccaneers again should start to boycott this clown show of an “professional” team

until the Glazers decide to hire intelligent football minds into the Front Office, that is good @evaluating talent and@Roster Building..

    Fire Licht Tonight!

  5. GhostofSchiano Says:

On one end of the spectrum you had Raheem Morris / DIrk Koetter and at the opposite end you had Gregory Schiano / Jon Gruden.

Looking like Arians leans more towards Gruden / Schiano….. I like that.

M.J. Stewart and Ryan Smith share some smiles
    Lol

    And no VH3

The #11 overall pick of the 2016 draft
And people still believe in Jason Licht
    SMDH

  7. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

I know it was just the MAC, but I sure hope Scotty Miller makes the final 53. He seems like a real effort guy.

  8. BigMacAttack Says:

I don’t think it’s a case that Buc fans believe in Jason Licht Headed, but we’re pretty much stuck with him. You have a few choices here, keep on hating, wait and hope for the best with new coaches, or tune them out. Fire Light isn’t really isn’t on the table right now but I bet he’s on pretty thin ice right now. There’s no question that Licht is a Draft Screwup Extraordinaire. He’s found a few good ones but Licht has blown many a high round pick. He deserved to be fired but BA came because he wanted him as his GM. BA vouched for the guy. He’s a made guy and we can’t touch him right now. So fogetaboutit.

  9. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

I’m excited about Scotty Miller. I think he makes the team.

They only people that believe he’s worth anything are you moronic FSU fans.
    Dude sucks
    ——————-
Buc fans 101, just clueless but wtfdik

  11. BucEmUp Says:

Louden, I cant wait to see your updated list of “busts” after Arians shows what real coaching does.

  12. Bucallyall Says:

Everyone acts like Licht is the only one making the picks.. he’s the GM but if you think licht is the only one making the picks like his coaching staff has no say whatsoever then you don’t know what your talking about

  13. BUCnDaDDy Says:

@ louden, your are the sucking most suckin of all who suck, just remember to swallow all that Dee when these Young Bucs a nut, down the field for a touch down all in your face. Holla if ya hear me Joesbucs. Cut and paste that to your archive, cause we ain’t bout to give up! So get on board or swim!

  14. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Jason Licht did not screw up this draft.

If it turns out to be a bad draft, it is ALL on Arians.

And don’t rewrite history, Licht has been fantastic at the draft. Just wait and see how the picks from last year look after development.

  15. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

And I really doubt he is on ‘thin ice’ since he landed Arians, which is who the Glazers wanted.

  16. JimmyJack Says:

Bonzai if our draft class fails & team fails it’s all Lichts fault. It’s how sports works. You must always have one person to point a finger at.

  17. Gettinthebucs Says:

I wanna hear more about beckner and where they have him lining up. I know he’s just 7th rounder but the dude has tons of talent. I’m hoping this coaching staff can turn him into at least a solid contributor.

  18. ben Says:

Light is the bucs worst gm ever …a crummy team and not have cash available means Light should be fired !!!!

  19. SteveK Says:

    BuccaneerBonzai,

No sir! Not even close. Licht is spotty at best. This team needs talent. And we had to take more DBs bc the Licht Weight didn’t draft correctly between: Ryan Smith, Justin Evans, Vernon Heargraves, MJ Stewart and Carlton Davis.

We still felt the need to draft three DBs this year, passing up on better talent because of the failed prior picks.

Please don’t say Licht is fantastic at the draft. This team is worse under him than it was Dominik.

  20. SteveK Says:

In fact Licht’s secondary picks have changed positions on multiple instances. What the hell does that say about scouting, Bonzai?

  21. SteveK Says:

Thin ice for Licht and Winston. The #1 pick made by Licht needs to look like a number one overall pick in 2019. Now or never?

  22. SteveK Says:

And, Licht let Bradley mcdougald walk. What the hell was that? Dude is a baller and a pro bowler.

Hahahaha, yeah right-Bonzai- Licht is “fantastic” at drafting. And he’s also “amazing” at free agency, right?

Why don’t we have talent, forced to select DBs in the draft all the damn time, and we have no cap space?

How much of the salary cap he’ll is on Licht and his wasted $ on failed FAs.

Remember, Licht wanted Swaggy 🌴 Baker and DeSean Jackson- while not even placing a call to Calais Campbell. Campbell had an all pro year and was in the mix for DPOY

We also could’ve drafted Ed Oliver or Josh Allen, had Dominik not passed on Keuchly (twice via trade down) in favor of Mark Barron. Dominik also draft Adrian Clayborn over Cam Jordan. One guy has a physical limitation to his pass rush, the other is the son of an all pro and a perennial 10 sack per year guy. But, I digress. It’s a Bucs life.

When can the JBFers get their say in payer acquisition, as we can’t be worse.

  23. #1bucsfan Says:

I wouldn’t call Jason a horror gm yet I think this coaching staff will develop a lot of what he has brought in an could turn so called busts around. His job is not bring players in its the coaches job to develop which the last staff couldn’t do hence there are no longer with us. Yea he has missed a few FA an draft picks but show me a Gm who has bin perfect you can’t because there isn’t one

  24. Bucnjim Says:

Not supporting the GM Licht but it’s funny how fans think he calls all the shots. If you don’t think the coaches both Koetter & Arians as well as the owners don’t have huge say in the process you are wrong.

  25. Chris Simms 2020 GM Says:

“show me a Gm who has bin perfect you can’t because there isn’t one”

Les Snead of the Rams, coming off a Super Bowl, made 6 ingenius draft day trades and nailed every single one of them. Insuring another SB appearance next year.

He made a fool of Jason Gump on the 2nd day of the draft stealing the best RB in the draft, Darrell Henderson, in exchange for 2 compensatory draft picks that were given to him for free, 25 and 29 picks later. Snead actually had two better 3rd round picks in his pocket but Gump was too stupid and unaware of that fact and didn’t even ask for them.

The Rams were desperate to acquire Henderson and probably would have given Gump anything he asked for, but stupid is as stupid does. Gump got two magic beans for that bell cow.

    FIRE LICHT TONIGHT!!

  26. BA FAN Says:

Yes Henderson looks good on tape but so does undrafted Anderson who Licht got for us. I also am satisfied that if Licht had gotten the higher 3rd picks he would still have gotten the same two DBs who are a real upgrade to our secondary. I wish he had picked up a third down back but BA can develop Ogunbowale, who BA is high on, into that third down back. We had no development under the Coaches we fired. Now with an unforeseen injury to JPP, Licht might have gotten a higher ranked DE than Nelson, but I believe Nelson can match the sacks that Nassib got last year, and Bucannon and Barret together should match JPP’s sack numbers from last year and I expect more sacks from Nassib this year and I expect Daniels and Spense as well as Kenney to get some too, and JPP should get some when he returns too. If we keep GMC and restructure Evan’s money to pay our rookies and BA develops GMC into a penetrating DE he could be a high sacker too, and don’t count out White as a sacker too; so don’t act like Licht has left BA no talent to get us a much improved defense this year! We all have favorites who don’t get picked every year but that will be the case no matter who is the GM.

  27. Brandon Says:

More expert opinions on Henderson, whom every team in the league passed up at least twice because they thought so highly of him. A speed back that didn’t run extremely well in addition to be a straight line guy whose college career had him hitting the secondary running through mammoth holes and untouched into the secondary. Maybe NFL GMs know more than the pin heads on JoeBucsFan know. Just maybe.

BTW, Licht drafts who the coaching staff covets. They’re not HIS guys, it’s his coaching staff’s guys. The first two of which were not his own hires. He was basically stuck with Lovie Smith and had Dirk Koetter and Mike Smith forced upon him.
