“Get Over It”

May 25th, 2019

Talks Bucs/GMC breakup.

Long before BSPN’s Mike Golic was a talking head on a lame morning drive-time national sports radio show, he was a damn good defensive lineman on one of the best defensive lines that ever played the game.

So recently when the Bucs and former stud defensive tackle Gerald McCoy reached an impasse because of the number of zeros on his contract (if that’s what you want to believe but the Bucs have said that’s not the case), it didn’t surprise Golic. In fact, the Notre Dame product said when GMC signed his contract, we all should have expected how it would end between GMC and the Bucs.

And Golic has a special message for fans who think GMC should have taken a paycut in order to stay with the Bucs. You can view it all below in this BSPN video.

Unlike MLB….the NFL contracts mean very little once you get beyond the guaranteed portion……IMO, that needs to change……I think it obligates players but doesn’t obligate the teams.
I also like it that MLB allows teams to absorb parts of player’s salaries in order to facilitate a trade.
A hard salary cap in the NFL vs the Luxury Cap Tax in MLB creates additional difficulties for players.

  2. El Buco Realisto Says:

What’s to get over?????? They held she-mc “accountable”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! After they tried to trade her, but the league said that she-mc had “No Value”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The best part is that she-mc and agent will not be going into the gm’s office to cry about scheme and not being featured properly as in years past!!!!! And do not think for a second that was a huge reason why immediately as ole stale biscuit walk into One Buc, that was the start of the message to she-mc!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The GM was burned taking up for she-mc!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Bucslifer Says:

Joe let it go… GMC was a good not great player. His issues were between the ears and that’s why his teammates stopped voting him captain. McCoy was a man child with great physical talent yet he liked to play with kids toys and characters. His farewell video to Batman music told you all you need to know about his maturity. If you’re following someone into battle are you going to follow the guy that is blaring DMX and chewing on glass, Hardy Nickerson, or the guy that’s playing Batman and talking about the Little Mermaid .

  4. Defense Rules Says:

Mike Golic hit the nail right on the head … IT’S BUSINESS. GMC wasn’t worth $13 mil to the Bucs at this point in his career, PLUS he wasn’t a real good ‘fit’ for the type of defense that Todd Bowles is trying to create. Love the way Golic put it though … “everyone knew how this was going to end when McCoy signed the contract” (along those lines at least).

The fact that we signed Suh as his replacement is getting me more & more excited. I know you don’t promote competitors’ websites Joe, but there’s a superb analysis of what Bucs fans should expect out of Todd Bowles’ defense this year. Tracks beautifully with some of the other ‘stuff’ that I’ve read about what TB tries to do.

  5. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Golic has been out of the nfl for 20 years and has no clue on tampa aside from the 5-11 records, cant wait for gmc to sign for 5 mil

  6. Destinjohnny Says:

Gerald was drafted before the rookie salary cap
    He made a fortune.
Jason if he had any skill could have gotten him at 8 million

  7. Buc50 Says:

Can’t understand the hate for GMC. His only sin was that he wasn’t Sapp. Overall…that’s a win for society.

  8. Todd Says:

    Yawn.

  9. Tony LA Says:

    El Buco

I would love to see you call GMC soft and “she” to his face and not behind the anonymity of a keyboard and fake name

  10. Reach87 Says:

What Tony said. Cowardly, IMO. Go Bucs!

  11. NOSBOS Says:

Maybe so 50,but not necessarily on the football field. LA did you see the video of the carolina panther Olinemen that got his Big @$$ knock slap the H3ll out??? Big and atheletic doesn’t always mean one has the heart for confrontation. Now protecting their kids that’s another story.

  12. NOSBOS Says:

He got his Big @$$ drop by a smaller man that wouldn’t back down because of his size.

  13. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Tony I would love it to. Dude has been a top flight player in the NFL for 9 years and would beat up of this p***y hiding behind a keyboard.

  14. Hodad Says:

McCoy has made over a hundred million, and hasn’t won anything, poor him.

  15. Magadude Says:

Joe, that’s a good find, thanks. It is not GMC’s fault the Bucs can’t meet their contract…it IS GMC’s fault that he’s not worth the money. Man, Golic is lot better than his son, who’s on earlier, and absolutely sucks.

Indeed, the Bucs did not honor the contract. But then again, one CAN argue fairly GMC didn’t play up to it. I have never been a GMC detractor…and believe after Barber, he is (sadly) the next most worthy guy for the Bucs RoH. Folks, am I missing someone else? And not sure he’s worthy, especailly if he is not retiring here as a Buc. Yeah, says he will be retire as a Buc. Doubt it.

I wish GMC well. So Golic is right…get over it. What I can’t get over is how this team, that stinks, has no cap money thanks to JL. Like Joe’s failure to post the Ali Marpet Ukelele photo in an article about Ali, JL has failed on a key responsibility as GM…and they kept him.

  16. Buccernutter Says:

The way Tampa media is reacting to losing McCoy is so weird. Especially Stroud. I get you need to report it but leave the feels out. You’re professionals. Move on smh.

  17. Buccernutter Says:

Oh ya and golic Jr is the worst ever.

  18. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … I get it, and don’t blame you for not including the link. But could the title ‘An Introduction to Todd Bowles’ Defense’ stay in so folks could find it through Google and become more aware of what to expect from our defense this year?

  19. Defense Rules Says:

Magadude … Undoubtedly it’s about the money, but it was also about ‘the fit’. Suh very simply ‘fits better’ with what Todd Bowles is trying to create than GMC did. Sure does seem suspicious that GMC wasn’t released UNTIL Suh was pretty much a done deal. IMO, the Bucs were simply keeping their options open, and when the ‘Suh option’ became a reality, GMC’s fate was sealed. I also wish GMC well, and I still don’t like how this whole thing was handled, BUT … I do like the end result. At least today.

  20. bucnole Says:

Dude has literally earned over 100mil and would not take a small cut for the team.
I love GMC for the player he could be on occasion but he did miss a lot of games and wasn’t IMO a very good leader.

  21. Todd Says:

    Magadude—

You’re on the list! Another adult commenter who knows you to write articulate sentences. See you at the yet-to-be-named bar after we win the division!

  22. Todd Says:

    “how” to write

  23. Lou. Says:

I don’t care that GMC could beat up some geek behind a keyboard.

I do care that GMC never seemed to bear up large, hostile men across the LoS.

    Like great players do.

IIRC it was somewhat standard procedure for opposing offenses to run straight at him inside the 2. And the local pen-and-mike-and-meme club would come to his defense, sadly saying he had been triple-teamed. As if you could triple team on the goal line.

I liked McCoy. I wanted him to succeed. He just didn’t. And that is sad.

  24. SC Bucs Fan Says:

Dusty you probably think he signs for 5 million proving just how clueless you are. Nothing like evidence to point out the morons. Well, technically you aren’t a moron until he signs so enjoy your elevated status while it lasts.

  25. JL Says:

GMC is probably in the tub right now playing with his rubber duckie!

    So long Muppet Man!!

  26. stpetebucsfan Says:

I’m curious is any other posters are having the same reaction as me about all the PERSONAL attacks on players, coaches and other posters that take place daily.

I totally get that many here did not appreciate GMC’s game. I get that many here love Warren Sapp’s game. But while personally I loathe Warren Sapp as a human being…I NEVER type a single negative word about Sapp on the field because he is at least in the conversation as the GOAT at his position.

First! My opinion about Sapp’s manifest personality flaws is just that…my OPINION. Second…it has NOTHING to do with what happens on the field. Ergo I have nothing but praise for Sapp as a player.

GMC is a class act. Nobody can deny that!!! We read all the absurd attacks based on his PERSONAL habits. As a player he clearly is not nor was ever…NOR IS SUH…an equal to Sapp!!!

We ALL agree. But why the need to make the attacks personal and fill them will all types of juvenile ad hominem attacks. Do some of you people really believe that Batman costumes and ice cream mean anything on the field of play? Really?

So then I’m assuming you just prefer dirtier players and hate sportsmanship. That’s ok but again that’s a preference not a fact!!! We can all list dirty great players and squeaky clean great players. Who was the better player…Deacon Jones or Merlin Olsen. They were BOTH great with totally different personalities and styes.

Ice cream…Batman…these are not FACTS that have anything to do with GMC’s actual on field performance.

McCoy has been selected to the Pro Bowl six times, and is also a three time First-Team All-Pro. 88 players make the Pro Bowl each year. If you count entire NFL rosters there are close to 1700 players in the league. That means roughly 5% make it…1 in 20! They are selected by 1/3 coaches ( clearly they do not know as much as TMAX)..by 1/3 players (again ignorant when compared to TMAX pontifications) and 1/3 fans. I certainly concede that the last 1/3 is no better than us..we are that 1/3..

Far fewer make ALL PRO and GMC has done it three times on the first team!!!!

Sapp may be a jerk…GMC is a nice guy…BOTH are great players as determined by the PROFESSIONALS in the NFL. The fact that one is HOF certainly indicates Sapp is better…but it doesn’t mean that GMC sducks. It’s as simple as that.

D.R. is one of my favorite posters. I LOVE that he constantly reminds us that football is the ultimate TEAM sport. Blaming any ONE player for being stuck on a bad team is just ABSURD.
Google for yourself and find the number of truly talented players who played on BAD teams. Did Paul Gruber suck? Not IMO. But his Buc teams certainly did. Was that all Gruber’s fault?
    Of course not!

  27. From76 Says:

Tampabucfan. MLB is the worst. The big cities get the biggest salaries. Think how good the Ray’s could be if MLB had a level playing field. Their salary system is a joke.

  28. #1bucsfan Says:

    Well said stpete

  29. DooshLaRue Says:

You guys and you’re “ I bet you wouldn’t say that to GMC’s face bullish!t”

    Why not?
    He’s not gonna do anything.
    If h does, then what?

    Lawsuit?

  30. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

Rule #1 of the working man

Never feel sorry for anyone who makes more money than you do

GMC was paid handsomely to be dominant and lead his defense unit to be a good unit.

    He did neither

Enjoy your millions and move on

  31. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @#1Bucsfan THX!

@ Loyal Agree I do not feel sorry for anybody in the NFL.

I do feel compassion for those that develop CTE or like the great RAiders center Jim Otto. He’s made it to 81 but for the past several decades he has literally had trouble getting out of bed because his body is destroyed.

Jim McMahon doesn’t even know where he is half the time because of CTE effects.

  32. NOSBOS Says:

Fat @$$ lawsuit. That’s exactly why he wouldn’t do nothing. But jump in the Bentley and ride off.

  33. rrsrq Says:

    @SPBF,

Well said sir. It is crazy how these posters can’t even imagine playing 1 year in the trenches of the NFL, let alone 9 years and according to most NFL people, doing at a high level. But they have an opinion of GMC based on the fact that he is doing something they only wish they could do. Don’t hate on him because he signed a contract that the Bucs offered, most of you would say that is winning. But those with sad options of GMC are really just whining.

I would ask the question do they know any NFL person personally, I do and the guys I know played in the trenches and I see them after years of playing still needing to go to PT. It’s rough in there and GMC has done it consistently.

  34. SC Bucs Fan Says:

NOSBOS you forget he would laugh at your pathetic a** before he jumped in the Bentley

  35. SC Bucs Fan Says:

Not you, the lawsuit fools above

  36. BigHog Says:

To all of you who say THE GREAT GMC “would not take a pay cut”. How the hell do we know that? I can remember when Sapp left, he said the Bucs offered him peanuts and he would not play for peanuts…..I don’t think they offered GMC a damn thing, BA just wanted him out, could have been handled better, but whatever, I’m still a BUC FAN! Now cut bait with JPP and get another D -lineman in here and lets go to work!

  37. BigHog Says:

@st pete that was one hell of a post! That is all!!!

  38. Youngbucs Says:

Soft mentality will not get you to the playoffs ever

  39. Buccingator Says:

    Joe,

Golic was a damn good defensive lineman? Seriously? He was average at best and a rotational player. I like golic on the radio but I’m not
Putting him in that category and his stats back up my argument

  40. Mike Johnson Says:

Nobody should be mad at GMC. He’s not mad at the Bucs. He knows its a Business. And he will play for another team this coming season. Buc fans are so desperate, they start calling GMC names sayin what he did not do. The guy was a pro bowler for 6 of his 9 yrs here. The players and coaches voted him there. We lose to much, we try to have short memories. But GMC carried the Defensive load all by himself for years with this sorry a** Buc defense. Now, you’s want to call him names. Whats up with that? Tell the guy Good Luck and be done with it. He might even win a superbowl with another team like many outcast Bucs have done in the past. We save 3 to 4 mil for one year. Thats all. We all know Suhs gone to the next highest bidder after this season. Just check his MO. Do better Licht.

  41. ElioT Says:

Can everyone please stop using this narrative “Geralds biggest sin was that he isn’t Sapp”… please STOP!

There will only be one Warren Sapp. Everyone knew McCoy was a different person.

McCoy’s greatest sin was that he was the leader of some of the worst defenses in NFL history, year after year.

The Joes had no problem letting Kwon walk for $13 million (neither did I, stupid money), but yet proceed to bash the kuddos that Kwon got for his leadership ability.

Okay… Kwon was a 4th Rd pick coming off a knee injury at LSU, came in and tried to set a tone. But he gets beat up because of him trying to be a leader of the same horrid defenses.

Yet, McCoy get’s nothing but excuses from the same people, even though he was the 3rd overall draft pick in his class (before the current CBA), was thrust into the leadership role and relished it.

McCoy never lead a damn thing!

McCoy allowed that fat-f**k douche bag Baker to run the locker room until Kwon and Jameis had enough in week 15???

Mentality is extremely important to any winning formula.

McCoy has been and always will be a mental loser.

I hope he goes to a team with real leadership to where he can fall in line and become his best self.

It wasn’t ever going to happen in Tampa.

You are what your record says you are and McCoy is a loser.

  42. Dlavid Says:

Nobody making these players sign contracts . They know the terms going in . Guarantee a contract and then you get the players collecting and not earning ! The incentive is to play up to the standards of the money you are being paid . McCoy cashed in plenty good during his time here .

  43. sincethebeginning Says:

@stpete and @bighog you got us are all kinds of right into.

Frankly I’m worn out by this JBF obsession with McCoy and Suh and JPP. I mean I get it, Joe has to get those clicks somehow, but it really would be nice if they actually dug up some real news instead of just scanning for other people’s news and re-reporting it. I mean, everybody here understands that that’s what this site is, right? It’s nothing but a Bucs news aggregator cloaked in clickbait opinions and not-so-subtle advertising. When is the last time JBF actually broke some actual news?

But who am I to judge? Here I am, every day, slogging through this regurgitation like everybody else. Thanks Joe. Your re-reporting really does bring a new spin to the things I already saw and knew about when they were first reported somewhere else.

  44. Bucsace Says:

I think we’ll “Get over it ” when WE FEEL like getting over it….McCoy was here for 10 years and was compensated to the tune of $100 million, I don’t think the national media realizes the depth of the fraud that McCoy perpetrated on this franchise
