Bucs Drafts Not That Awful

May 8th, 2019

Unscathed.

The Bucs are the sorriest NFC franchise in the post-Chucky era. No playoff appearances, longest playoff drought, eight losing seasons match the number of times finishing in Buccaneers Cove (last place in the NFC South), worst home record.

Other than that Mrs. Kennedy, how was your car ride?

So one would think given the depths this franchise has plunged to (yesterday may go down as one of the key dates in franchise history), a Bucs fan may think the team has had truly horrid drafts. That’s not so!

Eric Edholm of Yahoo! Sports decided to come up with the worst 10 drafts of the past decade. And the Bucs — for the most part — escaped unscathed.

Notice Joe wrote, “for the most part.” The Vernon Hargreaves/Noah Spence/Roberto Aguayo/Ryan Smith/Caleb Benenoch draft caught Edholm’s eye.

2016 Vikings, Cardinals, Buccaneers, Panthers and Browns – Too soon to write these teams’ picks off completely, but … they’re not good.

Oddly enough, a fellow drafted by one of those teams not named “Buccaneers” is currently on the Bucs’ roster. And if Jason Pierre-Paul cannot make it back to the field this season, this man will inherit the title of best edge rusher on the Bucs barring an unforeseen transaction.

This man’s name is Carl Nassib.

Joe fully understands if you have no appetite this morning.

If we are not being awful then we are ok with losing

Team has gotta start drafting the trench players, team is too soft in the trenches

  2. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

In light of the JPP situation, and passing on Josh Allen….it IS THAT awful.

  3. Doctor Stroud Says:

Spandau Ballet-lovin’ Bucs ex-GM Mark Dominik has been part of the same dysfunction that has plagued the Bucs for years. The front office either drafts “developmental” players (e.g., Benenoch and Smith) without developing them or players that don’t fit the coach’s scheme (e.g., Hargreaves and Spence). The front office and coaching staffs have not been on the same page for years.

  4. Todd Says:

Time will tell, but I think this year’s draft was excellent.

Stop beating the sh!t out of the past Joe.

We get it. We’ve sucked. Get more creative with your articles. Stop waking up saying, “Okay…how can I yet again RIP the bandaids off the wounded Bucs fans.”

We get it Joe. We get it.

Write something positive…especially after yesterday’s news.

And why in the hell do all my comments await moderation?! Is it because ai tend to be POSITIVE about the Bucs’ future?

You guys should go work for CNN and MSNBC so you can censor everything that’s happening GOOD in this country.

  5. Alanbucsfan Says:

Well, any player can get hurt anytime-
    Training camp, preseason, regular season…
They were 5-11 with JPP last year. JPP is a great player, but this team’s problems go way deeper than 1 guy.

Discipline, finishing, turnovers, penalties- fix these and team will be much better regardless of injuries.

That said, wishing JPP a speedy recovery.

  6. Alanbucsfan Says:

    Interesting stat-
Last year’s 2 least penalized teams per play- offense, defense and special teams- were Patriots and Rams – the 2 Super Bowl teams

What does that tell you about the importance of coaching…

  7. Defense Rules Says:

Alanbucsfan … Excellent observation about penalties. And yes, quality coaching must surely instill a measure of DISCIPLINE AND high EXPECTATIONS in the players that will impact performance on the field. Have a hunch that’s what we’ll see from BA & his coaching staff this year … a better-disciplined TEAM & higher expectations of each individual player. Whether it gets reflected in more wins is anybody’s guess right now IMO, because we’re starting so far down the totem pole.

Doctor Stroud … I agree with you 100% about our front office draft ‘developmental players’ (then not developing them) and drafting ‘players who don’t fit the coach’s scheme’. IMO that’s what you get when you play musical coaches and when your GMs don’t have a great VISION for the direction the team needs to go.

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Some of our players seem to get worse as the years go by…….Spence, VH3, Doug Martin come to mind……and I also think some of the other players don’t get developed…..and I also think we missed on many picks with both Dominick & Licht.

  9. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

The 2016 draft by the bucs will go down as one of the worst in bucs history

  10. Race to10 Says:

Nice Edholm way to sneak in those franchise altering day three pick with the first & second rounders because every year every other team except us has success in rounds 4-7

  11. Timbo Slice Says:

Seems like everyone is torn on this draft. Everyone either loved it or absolutely hated it.

  12. Tom S. Says:

What’s incredible is starting on average with the 7th overall pick in the draft every year and coming out of your fifth season as GM with only one Pro Bowler (Evans) who participated as an injury replacement when the average NFL team has 3 Pro Bowlers.

Hey remember when the Bucs were good but had a down year and then it was “well at least we’ll have a decent draft pick.” Since it’s now ever year say hello to Jameis Winston, Vernon Hargreaves and Vita Vea!

    Championship!

  13. ben Says:

Todd …Do the bucs meet your expectations ? do you pay for season tkts? With so many holes why do you think this draft was excellent ?

  14. Destinjohnny Says:

    5-11

  15. The Buc Realist Says:

While the bucs have may missed out on the worst draft of the year, You can put the bucs up against any team for the worst drafting team over the last 10 years!!!!!!!!!!! Maybe 1 or two teams could be in the debate, but would be hard pressed to take the Bucs out of the running!!!!!! Then comes the undisputed title for the Bucs of worst free-agency and THE worst trades in the NFL over the last 10 years!!!!!!!!!!!!! And the “real” shame is the sheep that have thought multiple times of how talented this roster has been!!!!!!!!! When incompetent loser lovie was coming in, all the sheep and local media could keep saying is wait until the players are turned loose and how “real” coaches are going to change this team!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. 813bucboi Says:

    coaching is the only hope…

    GO BUCS!!!!

  17. Joe Says:

Stop beating the sh!t out of the past Joe.

Joe’s a history guy. Telling a history guy not to look in the past is like telling a doctor not to fool with medicine or tell a plumber not to mess with pipes.

“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

  18. Todd Says:

    @ben

The Bucs under DK never met my expectations. I’m always an optimist. I held season tickets from the early 80’s until I gave them up with disgust the year before Dungy was hired. How’s that for “a Bucs life”?! Never bought season tickets again but always go to 3 to 4 games a year. Already have my airfare and hotel booked for London. Just waiting on the ticket sales for that game to commence.

Regarding the draft, we filled an extremely important position of need with a White. What’s NOT to like about this young man? Who would have known JPP was going to break his neck? Regarding the other picks, we got speed, talent, prior production, leadership and a whole lot of intelligent kids. I love the kicker pick at #5. Again, what’s not to like? We’re there other unmet needs? Certainly. Those positions of need will be addressed before the season starts. BA and TB are very intelligent and capable coaches.

Finally, why NOT trade in hope at this point? Is your day any better standing firm in the land of stinkin’ thinkin’? I personally would think that mindset would suck if I had to suffer through being a downer all day.

Go search Instagram for the therapy dog ZammyPup. That’s my dog. You’ll see lots of children Zammy helps who only WISH they had our horrible troubles as as Bucs fans. My dog and I spread nothing but joy and hope to these wonderful kids. I can’t afford to play in the persistent land of negativity like so many of the contributors to JBF do.

    Hope I answered your questions.

    10-6 & Playoffs!

  21. Lord Cornelius Says:

    LOL! LMAO!

let’s look at wonder boy dipsh1t’s drafts:

2009 – Josh Freeman / Roy Miller / Kyle Moore / Exavior Fulton / EJ Biggers / Sammie Strougher

Freeman – your 1st round pick back when you paid them a lot – was a total mental case. Roy Miller is the only guy who had any decent career but as a 2nd round pick he didn’t get a 2nd contract with us and our 3rd round pick lasted less than Noah Spence before bouncing out of hte league

    F-

2010: Gerald McCoy / Brian Price / Arrelious Benn / Myron Lewis / Mike Williams/ Brent Bowden / Cody Grimm / Dekoda Watson / Erik Lorig

Outside of the #3 overall pick which many people hate, basically a complete whiff even though we had hope with Mike Williams early on. Had 2 2nd rounders that both basically were a complete waste, but mostly due to injury.

    D+ for McCoy at least

2011: Adrian Clayborn (over future HOFer Jordan Cameron who I remember some wanting) / Daquon Bowers / Mason Foster / Luke Stocker / Ahmad Black / Allen Bradford / Anthony Gaitor / Daniel Hardy

Pathetic. No good starters and Bowrs might as count as the waste of 2 picks since he was used as logic in letting Bennet go. Foster maybe best pick as a serviceable but not great LB.

    F

2012: Mark Barron (over Luke Keuchly and others that we wanted), Doug Martin, Lavonte David, Najee Goode, Keith Tandy, Michael Smith, Drake Dunsmore

Only good long term pick here is Lavonte David. Doug Martin was a dissapointment overall for a 1st round pick RB. He gave us like 2 good years and even those 2 good years were massivly inflated by 3-4 good games per season.

C+ for Lavonte David. If not for him I’d give this an F-. You don’t get credit for the Rams using Barron.

2013: 1st rounder given away to rehab Revis, then Jonathn Banks, Mike freaking Glennon, Akeem Spence, Will Gholston, Seteven Means, Mike James

At least Spence/Gholston were serviceable late rounders on the line. Still a terrible wast ef 1st & 2nd round picks.

D+ for SPence/Gholston & Glennon getting a contract even though it was obviously completely undeserved lol

Jason LIcht sucks but his drafts still look way better than this as of now.

    Dominick + Licht = Crap.

A wise old coach, Earle Bruce (RIP) used to preach: “Nothing is as good or as bad as it seems.”

Life and Football Experience has proven his words ring true.

  24. Buccfan37 Says:

Mrs Kennedy and this nation suffer as a result a far greater injury than if the Bucs went winless for the rest of their existence.

Dude you made reading this sorry article worthwhile! best comment in a long time!

  26. joestang Says:

During the Licht era we have had more bad draft picks and free agent signings in the combined existence of this franchise. We are going backwards. Our roster after the draft is worse than before, go figure. We will be fighting for the #1 pick in the 2020 draft.
