Devin White Holding Steady; Josh Allen In Tampa

April 18th, 2019

Daniel Jeremiah

This has opened Joe’s eyes — and warmed Joe’s heart just a bit.

Now that former super NFL Draft guru Mike Mayock is working for Chucky, ex-Ravens, Eagles and Browns scout Daniel Jeremiah has taken the ball as the NFL Network’s top draft analyst.

Highly respected among league executives, Jeremiah would tell you privately that he’s no fan of being asked to do multiple mock drafts, but that doesn’t mean he’s putting out a second-rate effort. Jeremiah taps his resources and his extensive film work and rolls out his best projections.

In his third mock draft of the season, published Tuesday on NFL.com, Jeremiah pegs the Bucs as the landing spot for edge rusher Josh Allen out of Kentucky. That would be great! But perhaps more intriguing is Jeremiah projecting LSU middle linebacker Devin White to Denver at No. 10 overall. In his March mock, Jeremiah had White at No. 11 to the Bengals.

Jeremiah sees Kyler Murray, Nick Bosa, Ed Oliver and Quinnen Williams getting drafted before Allen, respectively.

The Bucs, per Jeremiah, could be targeted for a trade down at No. 5, the first spot Jeremiah noted as a trade-down candidate.

As regular readers here know, Joe wants badly for the Bucs to score a defensive lineman at No. 5 overall.

Daniel Jeremiah is very dialed into what is happening in the NFL. The clowns over on ESPN…not so much.

That being said I would love it if the Bucs draft Josh Allen or Ed Oliver. Either one of them should have a big impact on the Bucs defense.

  2. Joeypoppems Says:

I said last week that these Devin White to the Bucs reports was starting to sound like a smokescreen. There is no way everybody around the league knows what we want to do… right?

  3. NO FEAR... Says:

I SEE THE BUC’S TRADING DOWN IN THE FIRST ROUND , THAT WILL BE A SMART MOVE…….

  4. Not there yet Says:

You put way to much credit into some people’s guessing. It’s still called a MOCK DRAFT and doesn’t matter who anyone used to work for or how much they are respected if they don’t work for the Bucs. He’s still guessing who’s going where and if the Bucs draft white I’ll remind you of this article to show you that you get led around by news more than your readers.

This is the time you take nothing you read or hear seriously with the draft so close. Can’t wait to find out how the first round shakes out, it’s the first time in a long time I’ve cared who teams draft after our pick to know who’ll be available with pick 2

  5. Kobe Faker Says:

“Everyone in the NFL can read Gump like a book

Everyone knew he wanted and was going to take

    JW3
    VH3
OJ (very lucky OJ dropped and everyone knew he had to take him at #19)

*Last year Gump was going to take Derwin James and everyone knew it but Gumpster tried to play smart GM and fvked himself

*Everyone knows Gump wants and will take Devin White at #5, But will Gump try to out think himself again this year?”

    Kobe Faker

  6. martinii Says:

Allen is one of those 3 players that you have to take if he is available at 5. It would seem in a predominantly 3-4 scheme that DE’s will move to line backers in several formations. Not that I am anti-White but like joe pointed out it has been 26 years since MLB picked in top five. Actually, Joe wrote a correction on that. There were two. –Joe There is a reason for that. Now if we trade back and he is BPA then get him but for too many years we have needed a certifiable Pass rusher.

  7. SC Bucs Fan Says:

Tomorrow’s articles on here will include

    1. Why we shouldn’t draft White
    2. How McCoy is getting cut
    3. Arians feeling good about someone on the roster he shouldn’t be feeling good about

  8. Neal Says:

“*Last year Gump was going to take Derwin James and everyone knew it but Gumpster tried to play smart GM and fvked himself”

Sometimes i think you just string words together and hope for a coherent sentence. This doesnt make any sense. Why would Licht take someone else because he thinks other teams know what he is going to do? You wont look so dumb all the time if you just think for 2 seconds before you type.

  9. The Fighting Schiano's Says:

Tmax used to be my least favorite poster. I loathed his negativity about GMC. Congratulations Kobe Faker. You now are the most annoying person on this site. The Jason Gump thing is the dumbest continuous not funny joke going on JoeBucsFan.

    Just awful.

  10. Lord Cornelius Says:

No matter what Licht does there will be like 1/3 of the fan base p1ssed based on all the disagreeing around here.

I can live with White at 5 but that’s probably my most disappointing scenario other than reaching on some guy we don’t even have on the radar at 5.

    Q Williams DT
    N Bosa edge
    J Allen edge
    E Oliver freak
    D White ILB
    J Taylor OT
    J Williams OG
    M Sweat edge
    B Burns edge
    D Bush ILB

I will be happy with any of those guys and that’d basically be my big board right now; but prefer a top 4 or trade down. Maybe top 3 or trade down even.

Cody Ford / Andre Dillard are also interesting but don’t seem to have that consensus rank that Williams / Taylor do.

Rashan Gary would be the worst and I’d just have to pray they have a plan to make him a lot more useful than he appeared at Michigan.

Christian Wilkins wouldn’t be a bad consolation prize either in a move back as he would fit well at 3-4 DE. I could add him to the board

  11. Dewey Selmon Says:

I have a question. If we release or trade GMC does it not force us to draft Oliver?

  12. Lord Cornelius Says:

    “This doesnt make any sense”

Agree but it’s entertaining somewhat at least lol

  13. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

LOL….crazy to think with only 4 players taken Licht can’t find a good one @ 5….but maybe the pressure ill be too great and he’ll trade down….I saw the FSU DE Burns interviewed and I liked the way he handled himself..bright kid

  14. JimmyJack Says:

I think the most notably thing about this mock is Bosa falling outside Top 5. That is a bold prediction. Bosa could be a case of name recgonition that’s inflated his value.

  15. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “As regular readers here know, Joe wants badly for the Bucs to score a defensive lineman at No. 5 overall.” Hmmm, is THAT what you’ve been hinting at since the regular season ended Joe?

Assuming GMC is toast, Bucs NEED to either draft a DT or sign a FA to replace him. IF Q Williams is there, that’s a non-brainer IMO, followed by picking up the best MLB available in Rnd 2 so we can solidify the middle of our defense. IF Q Williams is gone, I still want us to draft Devin White then pick up the best DT available in Rnd 2.

For everyone beating the Oliver drum, that’s exactly what run-heavy opponents will do to him in the center of our DLine. Oliver will turn out to be a very good DE IMO, but he’s just not stout enough to anchor a DLine. Bosa & Allen are both VERY good I’m sure, but the Bucs NEED to focus on fixing the center of our defense or this year will be toast. We totally sucked against the run when in a 4-3 defense with GMC, Vea & Allen available; imagine what’d happen in a 3-4 with only Vea & Allen available. Todd Bowles knows this for sure … it’s either Q Williams or Devin White at #5. Or POSSIBLY a trade down to where we could still get Devin White.

  16. JimmyJack Says:

My goal for the Buccaneers has remained throughout the draft process. I want a dominant front 7 player for Todd Bowles new defense. The position is irrevelant because you build around the dominance.

We also need to be on the lookout for a new leader for the Defense. Those are tough to find. If you can find a guy that checks other boxes it is the easiest pick in franchise history. Good like finding that guy though…….as I said they are rare.

  17. Locked In Says:

Perfect… Allen will be a bust, so that makes total sense.

  18. ThassWassUp Says:

If Jeremiah is so highly “respected”, how mamy GM’s would take him seriously with Oliver at #3 to the Jets!??! Talk about a laugher, a farce would be any intelligent football mind picking that Oliver thing over Quinnen. Like that would EVER happen….lmao!

  19. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Unfortunately the bucs scouting department has been the worst in teh NFL for 10 years, jason gump is the worst GM in the nfl and bruce arians is not that great of a personnel guy as anyone can see by how lousy the cardinals are. SO the bucs lucked into having perhaps the 2 worse personnel guys in the NFL trying to get this organization on the right track……3-13

  20. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I have absolutely no problem with drafting Josh Allen…..

I’m very happy for Joe that a mock finally gives Joe a player that “warms his heart”

But, I hardly think that makes it a certainly that either Allen will be there at 5 or that we will pick him if he is.

  21. JimmyJack Says:

DR I like most of your draft ideas but I really don’t like your plans to draft a LB in the second round………Drafting based solely from need should not be an option for a well run team.

The goal of a draft must be to gain good & great players.

If the Bucs have a position that still needs a upgrade after the draft they need to have an ability to fix it without using a massive investment. If you need a massive investment to fix every need on the roster you will never win. Also it will never happen.

  22. Lord Cornelius Says:

” Oliver will turn out to be a very good DE IMO, but he’s just not stout enough to anchor a DLine. ”

Oliver played the run stuffing NT position most his entire college career and dominated against the run…

54 tackles and 14 tackles for a loss in 2018 in just 8 games while playing through injuries.

It’s also why his sack #’s weren’t high.

However – when they isolated his snaps to pass rushing snaps (3 tech / DE) he was top 5 in pressure percentage which includes DE like Bosa/Sweat/etc.

Oliver fits as a 3-4 DE in Bowles 1 gap system IMO; since those 3-4 DEs are one gap penetrators and not required to hold up bodies as much as a 2 gap system.

We shall see tho ! GO BUCS!

  23. Lord Cornelius Says:

Been listening to some Chris Simm’s breakdowns and he has a few unique takes.. Like the big 340 lb Clemson DT being his #2 over Oliver/Wilkins/others that most have higher

He has Rashan Gary over Josh Allen/Montez Sweat

Then i started thinking – what was this guy saying last year?

His top 5 QBs in 2018 – 1. Lamar Jackson 2. Josh Allen 3. Baker Mayfield 4. Sam Darnold. 5. Josh Rosen

It’s early but that looks like a pretty horrific miss on the top QB in the draft or even top 2

He had DJ CHark as the #1 overall WR lol.. over like 10 better WRs

Kind of hilarious that no draft analysts ever go back and re-grade their own big boards / how awful most of them are themselves, and then they continue to talk sh1t about GMs and teams as if they know what’s best. A4sholes IMO

  24. Defense Rules Says:

Lord C … One of the sites I think a lot of is Walter football (good insights it’s always seemed like). Here’s the most recent thing they’ve written about Oliver …

“Sources say that Houston had Oliver weighing in at 275 pounds and had played him as heavy as 282. The Cougars staff said that 285-290 pounds is too heavy for Oliver. He also is shorter than his listed height. Oliver does not have great strength, as he can struggle with mass and double teams. Some sources say that they are grading Oliver as a late first-round pick and expect him to go in the middle of Round 1.”

    Another report said this …

“Because of the size issue, Oliver could have some problems fitting certain schemes in the NFL. Obviously teams that want heavy nose tackles who play a two-gap scheme would not have a fit for Oliver. His speed, explosiveness off the snap, and quick-twitch athleticism would make him a fit as a three-technique. Weighing in the 270s, however, is very light for that role as well. and it would almost make him more of a designated pass-rusher. Evaluators feel there are scheme issues, but think he could play in a 4-3 or 3-4.”

Yes in 2018 he had 54 tackles, 14.5 TFLs & 3 sacks, mostly on the interior DLine. I have no idea admittedly what his ‘optimum’ weight should be, but it’s probably safe to say that playing interior DLine at the NFL level against some of these OLine behemoths MIGHT be a tad more demanding than what Oliver faced in college playing for Houston. Based on evaluations like that LC, I just can’t see Oliver as anything other than a DE. I know Joe’s hot to trot for a DE, but if we get rid of GMC, we have to replace him high in the draft, as well as select a MLB high also. If not, our run defense will get shredded once again, and we’ll be sucking wind in the 4th quarters.

  25. Negative Nancy Says:

That would mean Dwayne Haskins would be available. It sure doesn’t feel good passing up that opportunity just because you already have a guy in Winston, given the continued troubles he has on and off the field.

  26. Oneilbucs Says:

I just wonder if Jamies plays good this year and the team still lose I wonder if they blame him for the losses and let him go . Cause they still blame him for ever lost this team has even if he plays well. Jamies don’t have a fair chance on this team with so call fans and with the national media.

  27. Kobe Faker Says:

    “LC,

we have some way too uptight sensitive posters here

chill out…U guys and gals are scaring Kobe

    yikes!”

    Kobe Faker

  28. rrsrq Says:

but everyday, i listen to NFL radio and NFL Network and many others, they all say Devin White will not make it out of the top 5, they keep saying his talent is off the chart when film/production matches skill set, leadership comes naturally, enough to change a culture, and there is also a need – I will hate to watch another team have this guy blow up and become all-pro for somebody else, while we are chasing RBs out of the backfield getting first downs/touch downs

  29. No expert Says:

As bad as the defense is. As thin as the linebackers depth is. We can not pay a franchise qb if we can not protect him. Our starting rt is old and tired and has been on IR 2 of the last 3 years. After miss managing the cap and putting us in “salary cap hell”. Licht is forced to take a starting OT early in this draft. In my opinion.

P.s. we also need depth in the interior of the OL. But then again we also need depth on the d line, secondary, linebackers, rb however we do have 2 pretty good receivers and 2 pretty good te.

  30. NOSBOS Says:

This guy will be a bust. One skill set, speed rush. Nothing more nothing less. If the Bucs were to draft him it would explain signing Shaw Barret. He would be assigned to him day an night teaching him NFL level pass rush skills. Now,I dare anyone of you to link some film on here proving me wrong.

  31. NOSBOS Says:

    I dare you..

  32. NOSBOS Says:

And Pop every mock around that I recall had the Bucs drafting VH3. I tend believe when it comes to at least the top 10 the general consensus is fairly accurate. Most these tv types do what they can to at least look smart.

  33. NOSBOS Says:

Kobe it’s not just Licht. Who didn’t know the panthers weren’t drafting McCaffery??? Most mocks had them taking him. Same 4nette in jville, same wit zeke In Dallas. Let’s not act like generally the top ten kinda goes as mocked.

  34. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @D.R.

I used to go to Walter Football all the time…they were one of my top go to sources about the draft. Then approximately a year ago they started overwhelming their site with OBNOXIOUS popups that frequently made it difficult to read everything.

Yeah I know money rules but they can sell their ads now without my eyeballs as a revenue source.

I wonder who folks are “mocking” with their “mock” drafts? Could it be us? LMAO

  35. NOSBOS Says:

Defense I don’t even go that deep with it. But in my mind my own personal opinion I’ve been saying Oliver is mid to late first round. Kid had no hand technique. Q is some what of mystery to me because he only had one season as starter. But at least his film shows top notch hand technique. Ed Oliver is about be man handled come next season.

  36. Lord Cornelius Says:

    @kobe

    lmao

    @DR

Depending on which report you read it can be a different take. He did get taken out of plays in some film I watched but his explosiveness off the snap/disruption/etc just seemed up there with anyone else in the class; even though it’s college guys vs NFL and I’m not a scout so who knows lol

In the end I just want an elite player if we pick that high; and to get 2 solid level starters out of rounds 2/3 among our like 5-6+ key positions of need, with 1-2 contributors from rounds 4-7+undrafted pickups

I do love draft talk / analysis and as a Bucs fan it’s basically our season of hope and dreams before reality sh1ts on us come September lol

  37. NOSBOS Says:

And again I dare anyone to show me some film of Allen performing anything other than a speed rush. I dare you.

  38. Arian Nation Says:

“Not that I am anti-White but like joe pointed out it has been 26 years since MLB picked in top five. Actually, Joe wrote a correction on that. There were two. –Joe”

How about Mark Barron #7 in 2012?

The Bucs thought they were drafting a safety.

  39. whathappened Says:

    Josh Allen…
    Ed Oliver…
    Lavonte David…G Mccoy…
These players are great but do they translate to W’s

We need a qb hello!!! hello!! anybody out there!! guess what no its been like this since 2002.

Our D isn’t good enough to return to buc ball so you think 1 guy is going to make Ws all of a sudden appear?

QB is what we need at rd 1, D rounds 2-7 until we find him we will suck a big fkn stick

Try K Murray this year, at least we will get a kick out of it. Sick of this conservative sht

  40. NOSBOS Says:

My bad he does have another move that little shoulder shimmy shake where he dances around the tackle. I guess that’s a start.

  41. Ludicrous Speed Says:

The Jason Gump thing is the dumbest continuous not funny joke going on JoeBucsFan.

Right after the “America’s Quarterback” blarney, of course.

  42. Tampabaybucfan Says:

With all of the controversy surrounding White…..wouldn’t it be ironic if he was drafted before we pick?

I’m all for Bosa, Williams, Allen….and if gone, White or a trade down a few slots and picking Bush, Sweat, Oliver…..

  43. NOSBOS Says:

Well the 9er took Kwon,Kingbury system suits Murray, raiders signed Burfict and the jets signed Mosely so there’s that.

  44. NOSBOS Says:

Allen is Leonard Floyd. Decent football player but not quite a gamecharger. BA told you Joe grooming a young left tackle is like prepping that player for the next coaching staff. You don’t think the same rule would apply to a so-called outside rusher???

  45. geno711 Says:

I saw a good inside power rush against Louisville. What do I get for winning the dare!

  46. NOSBOS Says:

    😁I’ll think of something bro..

  47. gotbbucs Says:

This whole “we have to draft a defensive lineman to replace McCoy” thing is idiotic.
Vita Vea, name ring a bell? Oh yeah, the 1st round pick from last year.

  48. Lamarcus Says:

Don’t draft White? The most obvious bust is quennin Williams. Do not draft this guy.

  49. Lamarcus Says:

Actually Allen will be better in Tampa than Williams. Williams is a one hit wonder in college. But maybe this is a weak draft.

  50. WhatTheBuc Says:

LC, My board matches yours exactly. I’m not a Bosa fan but he’s a top talent. Kobe, Allen does use a speed rush a lot but he’s a OLB and offers more than just pass rush. Besides 17 sacks, he has 21.5 TFLs and 88 tackles. He’s also good against the pass for a 3-4 OLB. He had 5 passes defended and 5 forced fumbles. Some players don’t do what he did in 2018 in their entire college career. He’s a good player.

  51. rrsrq Says:

who was the last top 5 pick edge rusher to play in the super bowl. Von Miller 2011, is any of these guys the next Von Miller. I will wait.

  52. NOSBOS Says:

Lamarcus it’s been taking everything in me not to cal this a weak draft. I don’t like saying that because in a way it sorta diminishes the efforts of some of these young men. Many been dreaming of this moment for quite some time. But sure fire thing. I don’t know if any of the highly mentioned guys are. I just feel like the guy I hope for has a number of attributes that can help this team the minute he enters the building.

  53. NOSBOS Says:

Murray is 5 foot. Q only has a single season under belt. Bosa numbers are okay but don’t scream sure fire future all pro and those recent comments are somewhat suspect if you ask me. Oliver smallish and hand technique. I’ve mentioned my thoughts on Allen. Even my White is fairly new at his position. Sweat and Gary I won’t bother. Do metcalf simply put is not the next Megatron. I could go on but I won’t.

  54. cmurda Says:

If Josh is there, you don’t trade down. You draft him to dominate the next 12 years. I feel the same way about Q. I just don’t think Q gets by the Jets. I think Jeremiah has this right and I hope he does.

  55. BigMacAttack Says:

Licht’s going to screw it up somehow

  56. ThassWassUp Says:

Guess we should all get some of whatever this @Lamarcus guy is smokin…

  57. Lamarcus Says:

    That’s wassup

So you draft a Alabama tackle. An Alabama system tackle that produces a good DT every draft and usually don’t do well. A tackle who couldn’t beat out Ron Payne. Inexperienced. One hit wonder. Ed Oliver is wayyy more impressive and years of consistency.

  58. JabooBuc Says:

Not only is Devin White a top 5 player he is also a top 5 character guy. If he’s there you take him and don’t think twice.

  59. Jeagan1999 Says:

I think either Williams or Allen drops to 5.

But if they don’t, we trade back with Denver, Cincy, Miami or Washington and pick up some extra picks.

  60. BucEmUp Says:

Vea is McCoys replacement. I wasnt very impressed with Allen on film..Lots of running right past guys. Oliver seems like the clear pick. Maybe Williams or trading down and taking White. Spence is going to prove his worth playing the right position. There is no telling what will happen.

If Oliver is there and they pass on him, and he goes.somewhere in our division its going to haunt the Bucs for years.its going to hurt as bad as the Panthers drafting McAffrey. Hes going to.be a game Wrecker

  61. Im tired and 87 is right Says:

Joe I concur with you 110% to go Dline with this pick. If not trade down and go Dline. Simple as that!

  62. BigMacAttack Says:

Why do I see Noah Spence when I look at Josh Allen? Jason Licht is a Bust Magnet.

  63. Ndog Says:

You guys are right Licht screwed up so bad with Mike Evans, Ali Marpet, Donovan Smith, Jameis Winston, Adam Humphries, Chris Gowdin, OJ Howard, Peyton Barber, Kwon Alexander, Kendall Beckwith, and it is completely his fault players like Hargraves, Spence, Justin Evans, MJ Stewart, Davis, Vea and Gholdston were all used incorrectly when basically everyone on this board could see it but the coaching staff couldn’t. Yeah this GM is straight trash guys.

  64. #1bucsfan Says:

I’m for white but if gmc is gone an we do need a QB hunter then what do we do. I get it joe I really do. I got to watch rice an Sapp light up QBs but we need a LB who can cover an help with the run our defense was a sieve. Look at the patriots never heard of them getting to multiple Super Bowls because they got so much pressure on the QB

  65. SOEbuc Says:

Enough with the Josh Allen, Joe. We have JPP this year and don’t care what his age is, he’s still a speed boat with double digit sacks.

Allen has possible bust written all over and White’s skills and numbers show he won’t be anything below above average. Everyone that has ever been on the field with White declares him as a dominant team leader. A huge need on team and especially on defense.

What happens to our 3-4 LB corp if LVD goes down? That would be a sh!t storm so big we’ll lose another bye week this year.

Quinnen and Ed are off the board, I’ll take White in a swift minute. Don’t care how long it’s been since someone took a ILB in top 5.

  66. SOEbuc Says:

    White and David behind Vea…

    Christian McCaffrey’s a b!tch, lol.

  67. chargedcbh Says:

WHY DO YOU REPORT THIS STUFF? WOW his 3RD mock draft has Josh Allen coming to Tampa! What does that mean, NOTHING! Keep feeding Buc fans garbage! In my 500th mock, I have the Bucs trading Winston to the Cardinals and Picking Will Grier

  68. wausa Says:

In the following order is who I want the Bucs to pick at 5:

    1) Q. Williams
    2) E. Oliver
    3) J. Allen

  69. TOM Says:

I would say trade down if possible. Otherwise take a LB at #5. I personally like D Bush more than White or Allen. The reason I say LB because I think there are more very good DL than there are LB. I would go DL or OL in 2nd, depending on whose available.

  70. Famous Jameis Says:

Joe, the main thing you are missing is the greatness of a player, regardless of position. You want to pick a hall of famer at the 5 pick, I don’t care what position is. Picking an edge rusher just because that’s a high value position is what gets you Gaines Adams over Patrick Willis. Think if we could redo that draft we would of rather picked Willis? Devin White is the best player that will be available for us to pick, and as a cherry on top he is the best leader in this draft who could change the culture of our defense, which is badly needed after years of embarrassing play. To me Devin White has a chance to put on a gold jacket when it’s all said and done, and you simply don’t pass on that for a good to great pass rusher just because that’s what you think is best.
