“A Couple Of Things That Stand Out”

April 4th, 2019

Buccaneers co-owner Joel Glazer talks to JoeBucsFan.com

Team Glazer has had weeks to observe and evaluate its high-profile offseason hire, head coach Bucco Bruce Arians.

Joe asked Team Glazer what they’re seeing and feeling from Arians last week during the annual fat-cat-to-fat-sportswriter chat at the NFL Owners Meetings in Phoenix.

JoeBucsFan.com: Bruce Arians has been on the job about 80 days. I think he’s your eighth head coach. What are your impressions, what stands out, what makes him unique?

Buccaneers co-chairman Joel Glazer:  I think a couple of things that stand out. No. 1, it’s the way he interacts with people. I mean, you see how he can affect people when he’s just dealing with people 1-on-1, so you can see how that can translate to dealing with players. The way he looks at football or thinks about football jumps out. And really, his leadership style, his leadership style with different types of groups of people. So I think you put it all together and you can see why he’s had success throughout his career.

Joe liked the answer from Glazer. Frankly, he’s got so much experience with new head coaches that Joe finds the early impressions of Arians meaningful and telling.

Leadership is typically overrated when it comes to players, but not with coaches. Joe hears Glazer talking about Arians’ leadership style and ability to affect people quickly, and Joe immediately thinks that’s something Glazer would not have said about the Bucs’ last four head coaches when they were hired.

That’s a fantastic start.

The “real” fans want the world famous JBF confidence poll for JW3!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One thing that should make the Licht Haters happy, is that this coaching staff is the last he will hire for the Buccaneers.

I can’t have a repost a day because I don’t archive my posts for later reposting.
    ___________
If Arians can bring the Buccaneers back to a winning culture (by winning more games and having championship teams) he will have seemingly performed a miracle.
    ____________
Tampa Bay has a very small base of hard core football fans. That is just the reality.

my man, you do realize that Jameis is the most important player in bucs history and 3rd most talented behind selmon and sapp….

you are right about most things but you are missing the boat on Jameis…. The only way bucs every win another playoff game is if jameis is successful bucs will be contracted from the league in 10 to 12 years when the NFL is no longer recipients of HUGE tv deals. Network business model is as dead as radio it’s just a matter of time…. young people don’t watch sports, young people don’t watch network tv… the writing is on the wall. No one is too big to fail so you better hope jameis gets it right before the NFL’s number one charity case the bucs are eliminated from the league. and make no mistake about it a small market team with a tiny fanbase, crappy attendance and piss poor ratings will be first to go…

If Arians can bring the Buccaneers back to a winning culture

so help me out here pal… I have been a bucs fan since 78 and I’d really like you to remind me when this “Winning Culture” existed. Team has 2 good seasons in 42 Gruden’s glory year and McKay’s only good year… Bucs have NEVER had a winning culture nor have they ever competed consistently so once again I ask when or where is this Winning Culture you mention. Bucs were pretenders under dungy the clown. They never had a chance with his piss poor game day management and 3rd grade offense… bucs have never had a winning culture and have never won consistently so if BA can pull that off he will be the first and the Savior of this minor league franchise.

a team with 6 playoff wins in it’s 42 year history has never had a winning culture that being said I’ll gladly take a 1/4 of what your smoking if you disagree….

  9. tmaxcon Says:

    Joe,

How about an article about how the Glazers have MISSED on every hire they have made from day 1.

Yes, they bought a super bowl with the gruden trade but every single hire they made has been a bust starting with dungy the clown. He wasted sapp for 6 years. Whyce set up dungy’s defense yet the clown combination of mckay and dugny still could not put an offense on the field. That combo never competed nor won anything… pretenders never contenders.

Gruden never won another meaningful game after super bowl so that was a quick fix for nothing more than a one hit wonder label. At least he was able to clean up dungy the clowns mess quickly and salvage one good year.

dominick and raheem combination were setup to fail and never stood a chance with the glazers more concerned with Man U debt than fielding a respectable product. Then comes big meanie Schiano to clean up the party atmosphere. he was ran out of town for doing exactly what he was hired to do toughen up those pansy arses and instill discipline.

My personal favorite the living in the failed past PR stunt which gave ignorant bad character lovie smith friends and familly FULL control right after publicly witnessing him destroy Chicago’s roster with bad trades, bad contracts and running more coordinators than any coach in league history. Like his mentor dungy the clown Lovie too was handed a great defense and hall of fame players in Chicago and choked….

Koetter hire made sense but the dude just is not head coaching material…

So given the fact the glazers have never made a good hire and the bucs have never competed at a NFL level consistently why should I buy the load of crap this off-season.

  10. Tony Says:

If the Glazers we’re to sell that team to somebody who cares then that team will probably start to turn around. Maybe not right away but they need somebody other then the Glazers up there. They’re holding that team back. They only care about Manchester United. So just sell the Bucs to somebody who’s gonna care about them & then go focus on Manchester United. No way a team should be rebuilding this long.

  11. Joe Says:

How about an article about how the Glazers have MISSED on every hire they have made from day 1.

Well no, because that would be inaccurate.

  12. Tony Says:

Part of the reason nobody really goes to the games anymore is because they realize the Glazers don’t really care about the team. Just the $$$$. They don’t really put much effort into them. They probably figure they can just watch the game at home instead of paying for everything at the games. This team miraculously went down the toilet right after they won the super bowl & haven’t been the same since.

  13. Tony Says:

Jason Licht is part of the problem, too! He’s nothing special. You just pass on Derwin James when he was sitting in their lap?

  14. Tom S. Says:

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

The Glazers welcome BRUCE ARIANS to Tampa! I’m sure it will be a long and successful stint, just like all of the other coaches the Glazer Babies have trotted out. If there is a successful ownership group/GM combo it’s this one.

Hint: Maybe it’s not the coaching.

  15. tmaxcon Says:

Well no, because that would be inaccurate.

well I am convinced now Bonzi and Joe are one in the same…

Not a single meaningful win in 16 years is not proof enough…. dungy failed no other franchise on planet earth celebrates 500 football with no chance in the playoffs pr more laughably calls them glory years. so please enlighten bonzi who was the hire they go right. dungy was a feel good story not a good hire the results of the rest speak for themselves… again please help with this good hire

  16. tmaxcon Says:

one super bowl that expired 16 years ago is not a lifetime free pass… gruden sucked after super bowl so that was a one year wonder not a good hire…

  17. Kobe Faker Says:

“Going to get the Glazers out of the decisionmaking and stick with cheerleading

They want to pullup their sleaves and get in there and be involved

    THEY SUK AT IT

Glazer boys actually think Dumb Gump is actually drafting well

Only way this team ever bececomes successful is to hire a President and he will pick the GM and HC…

Mark Kobes Words…We will be the worst team in the NFL (miami doesnt count. This year they want to lose every game)”

“You just pass on Derwin James when he was sitting in their lap?”

What would Derwin James be doing in Mike Smith’s ridiculous secondary, though? I know Vita began to bulldoze toward the end of the year.

  19. 813bucboi Says:

why do you keep reposting something that you were wrong about….lol….winston did not get the coaches and GM fired…..

    licht is still here….

dirk got canned because he wasnt/isnt HC material…..
smitty got fired because of his trash defense……

back to back 5win season proves the HC didnt know what the hell he was doing and couldnt develop anything except for pass catchers…..

dirk’s job was to develop winston and he failed…..BA’s job is too fix the TEAM…..something dirk and smitty failed to do….

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

Kobe you’re by far the dumbest poster on this site. What’s up with u and tmax spending your whole life bashing a team you supposably love? I can only imagine what you guys are like in real life. True, uneducated, inbred Floridians.

Hey at least tmax’s opinion of McCoy is coming to fruition. Even if it’s 6 years later.

The 2019 season will unveil truths to Kobe that real fans already knew.

hall of fame is a joke. it matter when people were enshrined based on accomplishments not feel good stories.

  25. Lord Cornelius Says:

This team has been a failure because of horrific personnel management and horrific coaching hires from 2009-now. Primarily on the defensive side of the ball by far.

I pray as a fan for the sake of our franchise that the biscuit isn’t stale, and that the biscuit is going to coach the gump out of Licht, and him/Bowles will truly flip this sh1t defense and sh1t defensive culture we have had for over 10 years now.

Realist’s stats were super intriguing to me when laying out defensive PPG rankings given up since 2009. I wanted to look at the era before Winston vs after.

    2009-2014

Bucs defense on average ranked 22.8 in PPG given up.

Bucs offense on average ranked 25th in scoring and 23rd in yardage from that same period of time.

    2015-2018 Winston era

Bucs defense on average has ranked 23.5 those 4 years – so actually WORSE than the Dominik/Schiano/Rah phase.

However – the offense has ranked 17th in points scored and 9th in yardage over this 4 year stretch with WInston.

It’s not the QB people. Sure if we had Andrew Luck / Aaron Rodgers we probably win more games but we saw even Rodgers can lose a lot of games with a bad overall roster and team around him.

    FIX THIS DEFENSE.

We shouldn’t need to rely on our QB basically pulling off what Mahomes did last year to win/be a playoff team. That’s flukey as f*ck to rely on.

Also KC defensive stats were bad but they were up huge on teams a lot and playing soft prevent and giving up garbage scores. Their defense was a lot better than the stats indicated. Also had that insane game with the Rams where there was like 3 entire games worth of scoring lol

  26. JimmyJack Says:

The Glazers have always aimed for the Big Fish canidates to hire as HC.

They have wiffed several times and been stood up at the alter a few. That got their man twice.
First time was Gruden. Now it’s Bruce!!!

If you don’t get a bit excited to see what BA can bring you just dont got a pulsebeat of a Buccaneers fan.

ma’am I have earned the right to be pissed off. I have spent ten of thousands of dollars on tickets, merch, flights to watch these fools embarrass themselves and the sport of football. I have given them the benefit of the doubt year after year and every year it’s nutpunched by week 4 then draft talk by week 10 so who is the delusional one me with history on his side or you with your head in some safe space hoping your this is the magical year these morons figure it out…. you are not a better fan because you have low standards and accept losing with a smile! One could argue the better fan is the pissed off fan… the apathetic fan does perfectly fit a McCoy captained defense though….

do me a favor name me one other coach in nfl history who had generational superstars in Manning and Sapp yet still managed a CAREER LOSING RECORD WHEN IT MATTERS MOST THE PLAYOFFS

please name me one coach that had the luxury of so many hall of famers and still crapped the bed in the post season… dungy is a joke and the hall of fame is a joke for enshrining him based on popularity versus actual accomplishments but hat tip to ira for a world class sales job.

i’ll understand if all you got is HE IS A HALL OF FAMER IDIOT…. I have low expectations for your answer.

  31. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “Leadership is typically overrated when it comes to players”. Please tell me you don’t seriously believe that Joe. That’s akin to saying that the leadership displayed by players like Sapp & Brooks & Lynch had no impact on the Bucs’ team of the Dungy & Gruden era. Or that studs like Ray Lewis & Brian Urlacher were inconsequential. Field leadership is CRITICAL to winning teams.

@tmaxcon … ” Jameis is the most important player in bucs history and 3rd most talented behind selmon and sapp”. What? You’re comparing Jameis to 2 Hall of Fame
players elected on the 1st ballot after FOUR years as the QB of a mediocre team and saying he’s the next best? Apparently another HOFer named Derrick Brooks doesn’t count? Let’s let Jameis actually ACCOMPLISH SOMETHING FIRST … such as LEADING HIS TEAM TO A WINNING SEASON … BEFORE anointing him as a savior.

@Kobe … “Only way this team ever bececomes successful is to hire a President and he will pick the GM and HC”. That’s EXACTLY what the Glazers did Kobe when they hired Coach Arians. BA will transition to the ‘President’ job in probably 2 max 3 years IMO, and then Todd Bowles will take over as HC. Licht will keep his job IF he listens to BA (cross him & the Licht goes out). BA knows full well that it’ll take 2-3 years to turn this Pirate Ship around. He might say he’s not rebuilding, but I’ll bet you that the 53-man roster come September has less than 60% of the players on it who we ended last season with.

You post on the internet everyday negativity in relation to the bucs. Stay on track here. Just cuz you’re getting older doesn’t mean u need to be such a bitter old woman.

I get it, we’ve all experienced heartache over the years. We’re all mad. But this is a sport and spending all day everyday discussing how bad it has been and how little of confidence u have has got to he the strangest thing I’ve seen on the internet on a consistent basis. 42. Defense Rules Says:

@Diddler … “Bowles would be a terrible head coach.” Bill Belicheck’s record in 5 years with Cleveland was 36-44. Then he was hired to be HC at some team called the Patriots and won THREE Super Bowls in the next FIVE years.

Wonder if the fans in New England complained about what a “terrible head coach” he was Diddler. Same coach … but different ownership & different players. Hmmm, the only conclusion I can draw is that the Patriots never won those 3 Super Bowls. And oh ya, the U.S. never put a man on the moon.

And before you come up with a really unique retort like ‘Todd Bowles ain’t no Bill Belicheck’ let me agree with you but add ‘And the Bucs ain’t the NY Jets either’. People learn & grow, and every situation is different.

  43. Defense Rules Says:

The majority of our fans are dumb and it’s embarrassing at times. I am a bucs fan and sure enough I get pigeonholed with the majority of the rest of u. Until I debate in PERSON and not the internet. That’s where a real fan can be judged.

I dont have time to find my old posts, but I said the day Mike Smiths hiring was announced that he would be the reason Koetter would fail. Smith damn near ruined Jameis as well. To say Jameis got Koetter fired is dumb. Special teams were horrible. Clock managment was horrible. Lack of in game adjustments were horrible. Defense was one of the worst coverage units in history with high picks and veteran names.

Coaching has been the problem for a loooooooong time.
