SI.com: Eric Weddle A Fit

March 7th, 2019

Projected fit.

The Crows are shedding a lot of salary on their defense. And while Joe is borderline obsessed with the Bucs grabbing inside linebacker C.J. Mosely, perhaps it should be another Crows player recently thrown to the curb by Baltimore coach John Harbaugh.

That would be safety Eric Weddle.

Andy Benoit of SI.com checked out the NFL landscape to find teams that could use Weddle. In his list is the Bucs.

New defensive coordinator Todd Bowles plays the way [defensive coordinator James] Bettcher plays with the Giants. Tampa Bay’s incumbent safeties are so-so. Bowles might want more athleticism here, but we’ve seen a hundred coaches in his position before eventually say, “Screw it, just give me a guy who knows what he’s doing.”

The “screw it” might be a good option. It’s not like the Bucs have Team Glazer loot coming out of their ears thanks to being up against the salary cap. And with so many safeties on the market the Bucs ought to be able to get an upgrade at a decent price.

It may not be Landon Collins or Honey Badger but if the Bucs are interested, there are a lot of lesser yet experienced safeties to choose from.

With all this chatter of the Bucs pursuing safeties, which Bucs’ safety should be most worried, Justin Evans or Jordan Whitehead? Don’t get Joe started on new safety M.J. Stewart.

  1. Andrew Says:

Jason Licht should be most worried. This new staff may force two of his 3 recent 2nd day draft picks to the bench at safety. And we’re in dire need of a good corner.

  2. AlteredEgo Says:

    Nope !

  3. Bobby M. Says:

I’ll continue to say this….Arians has repeatedly stated how talented this team is…so let’s see him wave his coaching magic over the same talent Koetter had to work with and see how great we really are with nothing more then “good coaching”.

  4. Kalind Says:

    Whitehead…for now.

  5. Andrew Says:

    My comments being screened, joe?

  6. Bird Says:

    I Forgot about weddle.

There are 5 all pro safeties out there.
Geez. Maybe we can get one for closer to around 8.

More safeties May saturate and bring down prices.

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We have 3 safeties and need 1 more….so no one should be too worried.

  8. Hodad Says:

Evans, MJ, and Whitehead that’s three high draft choices Licht chose to play safety. What does that say about Licht’s ability to draft if you still need a safety?

  9. DB55 Says:

What’s up with the Vikings safety? Isn’t he the best rn?

  10. macabee Says:

What I do find ironic is that the Ravens get rid of Weddle, but according to reports is locked in a battle with the Bucs over S Tyrann Mathieu.

  11. What the buc Says:

I don’t think they are really considering a free agent safety at least not a top level guy.

  12. macabee Says:

    NFL UFA Safeties

12 safeties are now on the list of the Top 100 free agents

    Landon Collins
    Earl Thomas
    Tyrann Mathieu
    Adrian Amos
    Lamarcus Joyner
    Eric Weddle
    Clayton Geathers
    Ha Ha Clinton-Dix
    Glover Quin
    Kenny Vaccaro
    George Iloka
    Tre Boston

Experienced players like Johnathan Cyprien, Adrian Phillips, Jimmie Ward, Kendrick Lewis, Kurt Coleman, Marcus Gilchrist, Chris Conte, Reggie Nelson and Mike Adams are also available, so there are options at various levels for teams to consider for their secondaries.

  13. TOM Says:

IMO They had there fourth safety in Adams & chose to release in order to save a whopping 2 mil. Way to go Licht. (dumbass)

  14. SB Says:

I think we are good with Whitehead and Evans.
They just need good coaching which they haven’t had yet.

  15. joestang Says:

Weddle is getting older. A lot of younger safties out there than him.

    i agree….

better coaching will improve their play….

but i wouldnt mind a vet like j.cyprien….

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!!

  17. KingCrabLeggs Says:

Please GOD NO! I live in MD. Weddle is way to slow. The Ravens fans I know talk about him like we use to about Keith Tandy. “Smart Player, Great Team mate, would make a great coach” not what we need. GO BUCS! It’s the King Bih!

  18. Alanbucsfan Says:

The Jets had a decent defense last year and they were stupid for firing Bowles,
    especially with a rookie QB.
If Arians gets Jameis to cut the interceptions in half and they can average a 1/2 yard more per rush, Bowles’ defense should help them to 5 more wins.

Alot of ifs and hope, we’ll see

I like the way you think. But I’m the optimist here and posting positive thoughts like that goes against the grain of many of our negative nellies here.

Cmon Licht start shedding dead weight. Money looks tight
