Ryan Griffin A No. 2?

March 12th, 2019

Returns.

Joe has no idea if career backup quarterback Ryan Griffin is expected to be a No. 2 quarterback or will continue to be inactive on game days.

Maybe that question will be answered this summer!

But Joe does know this: Griffin signed a two-year pact to return to the Bucs.

It seems slightly odd if the Bucs were to rely on Griffin as the backup to America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, since Griffin has never taken a snap in a regular season game.

With Griffin returning, that means two-thirds of south Tampa’s most famous bachelor pad will remain intact (Cam Brate and Griffin). The third member of that trio, Adam Humphries, has moved on to troll the bachelorette party capital of the south, Nashville.

    So exciting!

    Not.

  2. Tom S. Says:

Given the very limited cap situation, holes on the roster and general premium paid to signing any functional QB I wouldn’t be surprised if Griffin was competing with a mid-to-late round draft pick to be the backup. Though they could always see what QB is willing to sign a cheap one year deal as FA progresses.

  3. William Walls Says:

If Humphries can’t find a wife in Nashville, then he ain’t tryin’. LOL

  4. Jean Lafitte Says:

At least there should be no danger of Winston’s fragile ego being threatened. At this point if Griffin out performs Winston it’s time to move on.

  5. Tbbucs3 Says:

    Licht sucks

  6. Knucknbuc Says:

woohhhooooo goodjob jason DUMP. this team is looking so much better then the saints falcons and Panthers. hey @joe can we extend jason dump to an extension yet? also, when are playoff tickets on sale?

  7. Jonathan Lipnicki Says:

    The perfect gig…

  8. NPRSageBoy Says:

Let’s face it: on preseason videotape, Griffin does look impressive. If that’s all Arians has to go by, Griffin is a steal. But, you gotta ask: is he a bonafide #2?

    Nah….

Two days into free agency, Bucs have done nothin’.

  9. Bird Says:

Seemed like Mike Glennon was returning

    Does Arians keep 3?

  10. Bird Says:

Who does number 2 work for…

  11. Bird Says:

So far , we are looking at Mike Glennon and Deone Buchanon

    Woohoo!

We are gonna have to hit on draft and get at least 3 starters . Maybe 4

  12. catcard202 Says:

Ryan Griffin is Jake Delhomme 2.0

  13. SCBucsFan Says:

Ryan Griffin. Nice job if you can get it.

  14. Buc in syracuse Says:

    Finally, we make a move…

  15. Casey Morgan Says:

    Just go with 2 QBs…

  16. stpetebucsfan Says:

There is a lack of logic here. People are saying Griffin can’t be the #2 because we haven’t seen him play in the regular season.

This means we don’t know if he’s good enough. It also means however that we don’t know he’s awful either. We have seen him look pretty good last preseason.

So it’s a gamble. Would we rather be certain with a known mediocrity, IE a QB who HAS played in the regular season. In fact we’re not even assured we’d get mediocrity. We would end up with the dregs of the barrel with our budget. Quality QB’s who were the victim of a numbers game…see Philly and Wentz and Foles…still break the bank when they sign. The only QB’s with experience who are free are those not worth having.

We might as well face it. Like many teams if our “franchise” QB goes down we’re hosed. Might as well gamble on a player who actually has a shot as opposed to one we KNOW isn’t up to the task.

  17. Rod Munch Says:

Humm… Griffin has never looked anything like an NFL QB to me. Maybe I’m missing something.

  18. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Ginger giraffe is not coming back here. He has no ties to our GM or coaching staff. Griffin will suffice as our backup. I’m sure he could go 2-5 like Fitzpatrick last year.

  19. Mike10 Says:

The cottling of Jameis Winston continues.. this is gonna come back to bite us

  20. William Walls Says:

Griffin was starting to put it together last I saw him. I bet Arians can do a thing ot two to make him a solid backup.

  21. Lord Cornelius Says:

Sounds right to me with Arians philosophy.

Dude played well in preseason and has been around. We are not some loaded team that can get by with a game manager QB / need to invest heavily in back ups.

Fitzpatrick touted as probably the best backup last year still went 2-6…

We are going to either succeed or fail with Winston.

  22. SCBucsFan Says:

Mike I don’t know what cottling is but rest assured if the Bucs are paying JW what they are paying him he will take every healthy snap next year before casting him off.

  23. BucAllNight Says:

I like this all Def in our 4 picks OL with 5 & 6, and QB with our new 6th.
The QB from Univ of Buffalo Bulls would be a nice project to groom.

    Go Bucs!!

  24. Tampabaybucfan Says:

He’ll likely be our # 2. AB wouldn’t fool with him otherwise.

  25. BucAllNight Says:

    *1st 4 picks

  26. Adrnagy Says:

I’m ok with griffin. Why invest in a back up. Heck if something goes wrong we can sign a vet that’s laying in the couch (Sam Bradford ,etc) or trade. Or have Joe play QB.

  27. AlteredEgo Says:

    Griffin …Stickboy # 1
    Glennon …Stickboy #2
gotta do better than that behind Jamyth

  28. SOEbuc Says:

Plenty of haters, but griffen’s accuracy was on fire last preseason. I remember I always hated him cus he sucked so badly prior but he looked really good. I think if the “QB whisperer” thinks this guy is a worthy #2, the Licht haters should shut the f#ck up on this decision for the time being.

  29. D-Rome Says:

    So exciting!

    Not.

Since you have a proclivity for being wrong with just about every prediction, it bodes well for the Bucs that if you are down on their off-season it means they’re doing something right.

  30. Bird Says:

    Alaskan Abdominal

Licht tried to give glennon 7 mil a year to backup Jameis and he went to Chicago.

  31. D-Rome Says:

I’m ok with griffin. Why invest in a back up. Heck if something goes wrong we can sign a vet that’s laying in the couch (Sam Bradford ,etc) or trade. Or have Joe play QB.

You’re right. There’s always an experienced arm in free agency during the season.

  32. Elita Vita Says:

Griffin never was given the opportunity to play in an NFL game…not even in garbage time. Is he that bad? Personally I think not. I’ve seen him in preseason and looked like he was very workable to coach up. Under Bruce Arians we may be pleasantly surprised that we have in him a solid #2.

  33. Zwak Says:

Kid never got a real chance, maybe one day..

  34. passthebuc Says:

We need a top flight right tackle. Jl to prospect. we can offer you 10000 per game, and remember there is no income tax

  35. GhostofSchiano Says:

It seems slightly odd if the Bucs were to rely on Griffin as the backup to America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, since Griffin has never taken a snap in a regular season game.

Griffen has also been squeaky clean, never accused of any wrong doing, never publicly humiliated the Bucs and it’s fan base, and never been suspended.

Forget the Glennon mob, fear the Griffin Gang!!!!

  36. Locked In Says:

I’m ok with this, I think Griffin should get a shot. We’ve invested in keeping him on the roster for what? 3 years now. And Peyton in NOLA (hate that guy) had him before we stole him off the practice squad I think. I’d rather go with him than Napoleon Dynamite.

  37. The Buc Realist Says:

Very crafty by coach stale biscuit!!!!! Coach Koetter is still in the division, so it is wise to have a QB that was so long in his system!!!!!! jw3 could not explain the offense due to coaches “skin color and not relating”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Very crafty indeed!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 season will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  38. Bucsfanman Says:

Lol at the panic! Stay calm. There’s a long way to go. Good depth signing.

  39. KW Buc Says:

We would have known what Griffin was all about if Koetter had given him some meaningful playing time in the lost seasons of 2017 and 2018

    Now, who knows

  40. Conte Piscatelli Says:

I think Griffen could be a serviceable back up quarterback because I trust the guy that signed him out of college and tried to hide him on the practice squad, not because I trust our front office.

  41. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

It’s time for Griffin to shine. He’s held up a valuable roster spot for years now, it’s time for him to be #3’s backup.

  42. Defense Rules Says:

Agree with Bucsfanman … “Good depth signing.” I’m disappointed that Koetter kept him on the roster for THREE years, taking up a valuable roster spot, and NEVER ONCE let him play in one of the 48 games that the Bucs played in those 3 years. NOT ONCE. That move was dumber than dirt IMO.

I’m glad though that Griffin re-signed with us. And with some decent QB-coaching he might surprise folks IF he ever gets a chance to play in a real game. Maybe you really did “miss something” Rod. And so did Ryan Griffen … an opportunity to show what he has or doesn’t have.

  43. Jeff Says:

Humph is gonna nail so many beautiful Tennessee ladies. Good for him.

  44. Buc believer Says:

@William Walls…. “if dude can’t find a wife in Nashville” WHAT THE HELL!!!??? Dude has it made! He is mega rich an NFL player and as much as I can judge how a guy looks he is not bad looking. What the hell would he want with a wife???? Play the field my man!!!!

  45. JA Says:

    Tbbucs3–

    “Licht sucks.”

Judging by that well researched take, I can see that you are a deep thinker.
Any more enlightinng info you care to pass along?
I’m sure I can speak for many here as we await with bated breath.

  46. Jameis Almighty! Says:

Excellent news! Jameis can now go full bore ahead

  47. jerseybuc Says:

Is Ryan Griffin one of the Glazers nephews or something? Guy may set an NFL record for making the most money ever without actually stepping on the field.

  48. Phil Says:

Good rather have him than Glennon.

  49. Tbbucs3 Says:

    JA

Care to look in the archives for my many comments on why Jason Licht sucks. There are many.

  50. Tbbucs3 Says:

    JA

Nevermind that just look the Jason Lichts free agency and draft track record.
