Former Bucs OC Hits Jackpot

March 13th, 2019

Very happy man.

Last night, a former Bucs offensive coordinator, through no effort of his own, may have already become a leading candidate to be an NFL head coach in 2020.

And that man’s name, good friends, is Todd Monken, who walked into just about the perfect situation in Cleveland, a team loaded with young talent on the rise and led by a dynamic quarterback, Baker Mayfield.

After leading the Bucs to one of the most potent offenses in the NFL, Monken is on the cusp of doing it again. And Christmas came early for Monken this offseason.

Last night the Browns acquired the second-best wide receiver in the NFL, Odell Beckham, in a blockbuster trade. This, on the heels of the Browns signing running back Kareem Hunt.

No, the Browns aren’t screwing around.

Monken became sort of a cult hero with the stat nerds for his playcalling last year when hs passing game pushed the ball down the field. The Bucs racked up passing yards like this town has not seen before.

The offense was so fun for the numberscrunchers, that Evan Silva of Rotoworld.com gave Monken the nickname, “Todd MFin Monken.”

The “MFin” means just what you think it means.

Let’s say the Browns have a top-five offense next year, which is entirely possible given their talent. With Monken’s sterling resume, you can bet your rear end the popular former Bucs offensive coordinator will be a top head coach candidate in 2020.

Joe enjoys good things happening to good people.

Odell is king of the jackasses, watch this whole “dream team” blow up.

  2. John Says:

2nd best because he just ain’t mike evans.

  3. The Buc Realist Says:

That will be fun to watch!!!! Mainly because Coach Monken will get to work with a “real” franchise QB that will be able to “relate”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 season will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    PAPER CHAMPS.

  5. Bird Says:

Odell already asking for his contract to be restructured
And He signed his contract last August . SMH

Hopefully his antics come out again and backfire cause monken who won’t put up with his crazy deranged attitude

But. Yah. Monken went from all our amazing weapons to these bright shiny new weapons in Cleveland. Interested to see the browns next year for some reason. They got talent all around – thank their GM Dorsey for that.

Meanwhile , we signed a punter , kicker and Kevin minter.

  6. NO RISK IT NO BISCUIT Says:

    Go Monken!!!!

Can BL engineer a better offense?

    I hope so.

    Go Bucs!!!

  7. ncbucsfan Says:

Glass half-empty or half-full. This could mean he gets the shortest leash and the quickest ax to get fired if they aren’t this all-world offense. They won’t be able to keep this team intact in 2 years when Bsker Mayfield and Myles Garrett are up for extensions. They’re the Rams of last year. I see the Patriots humbling them in the playoffs, lol!

  8. AwShbucs Says:

Browns would never even be as close to as good as they are poised to be if they didn’t openly rank for 3 seasons in a row… Anyone who doesn’t realize this is a fool.

Having a great GM like John Dorsey has certainly helped the last 2 years to initiate the turnaround. But having 3 picks in the 1st round every year gets you a ton of good young talent.

  9. FortMyersDave Says:

Somehow I have a feeling that Monken is gonna have issues with the egos of Mayfield as well as Odell and somehow it seems that teams that make the biggest FA splashes and become the media darlings in March and April are also the teams that disappoint the most in the following season and somehow lose double digits (like the Bucs in 2017). I wish Monken luck but the Brownies have a curse over them that is as bad if not worse than the Bucs and now the expectations are high after a 7 win season in C-town, so much that Monken and ex Bama QB now head coach Freddie Kitchens are now expected to win double digits or else its gonna implode on them from their fans, the media and probably some of the players on their roster who will probably bellyache like a TO-DJax hybrid if things do not go their way. I do hope Monken does succeed up there by Lake Erie but it might not be a bad idea to be the under on Cleveland’s likely over inflated over/under win total at the sportsbook………

    @Realist

It’s really sad that you cant see that the only 3 coaches on this team last year that were worth a damn were Monken, Duffner, and Buckner.

Koetter and Smith proved themselves to be incompetent Boobs for 2 back to back 5-11 seasons. Koetter less so because he is still a decent OC but is incapable of leading a team and holding players accountable. Watching him suck up to Djax was sickening.

Smith on the other hand was so bad that not only is he out of coaching, he’s been exiled to the AAF. Rightfully so because his 2017 and 2018 defenses were worse than Lovies. Yet you still blindly defend him.

You truly have become the new Tmax lol.

  12. Jonathan Lipnicki Says:

Good on Monken…was a solid OC…called out DJax early on ( Hard Knocks ) and was right in the money. When he was calling the plays vs The Dirk…the offense seemed to roll. Or in the words of Licht Weight…was one of the best offenses of all time.

  13. JimmyJack Says:

Joe when are you going to connect the dots and see the Bucs benefit to this trade?

Giants now have a ton of draft capitol and eventually will be moving on from Eli. This is their year to draft their future QB to pair with Barkley.

No doubt they are thinking about trading up to #2or#3(they will never trade with the Jets). Murray goes nomber 1 and Giant trade up and our Bucs get my dream, Q, at 5. Or your dream Allen!!!!!!

  14. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

AwShbucs, have you not looked at where the bucs have been picking in the same time frame as the Browns. Jason Licht is just a horrible GM and cannot get FA right nor the NFL draft right, how he is still an NFL gm is beyond me. He drafted a kicker in round 2 that alone should get you fired and then all of the reaches and misses. Oh ya and having the highest paid OL in the NFL and making the bucs salary cap non existent….and back to back 5-11 seasons. The browns under great management have flipped their 0-fer roster and built the nfls best defense and added to that and now have the nfls best offense…oh and the bucs have the ugliest unis in the NFL

  15. D-Rome Says:

The Browns odds of making to a Super Bowl officially went up as well. A lot of people are bashing the Giants on this trade but I think it was a good deal for them. Really, it was a win-win for both teams. That team was going nowhere with OBJ.

Meanwhile, the Bucs continue to be the gold standard for bad franchises. The fans around here deserve better.

Joe wrote this on Twitter last night.

  17. AwShbucs Says:

    Dusty Rhodes

As well all know. The Bucs had the #1 overall pick in 2015. Since then they have earned the 17th overall in ’16, the 7th overall in ’17, and this your of course they are picking 5th.

The Browns had the #2 pick in ’16 which they turned into more picks. The #1, #12, and #25 picks in ’17. And then they had the #1 and #4 picks in 2018.

Really not even comparable. The browns have twice as many 1st round picks and 2 times had the first pick of the draft. Tell me again how great it is that Koetter got us to 5-11 twice instead of 3-13. Lol if your gonna suck you might as well get something for it…

  18. neal Says:

I’ll never understand why people think OBJ is better than Evans. Even Bucs fans say it all the time. Evans has better stats, Is hurt less, and is a better teammate.

  19. 813bucboi Says:

monken will fall flat on his face…..lol….the expectation of winning combined with huge egos will make monken fold…..

imo, he’ll do what he did here….produce a ton of yards and lose by 14pts…..monken never proved he has an offensive identity……i believe freddie kitchens will still call plays….

    3teams always win the offseason….browns, jets, bucs….

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!!

  20. RODNEY J ALLEN Says:

Neal I’d have Evan’s over obj all day he has skills and speed but so does Evan’s n Evan’s isnt a injury prone drama queen like OBJ. However it still a heck of a move by Cleveland to get him

  21. FortMyersDave Says:

AwShbucs: The Bucs are masters at winning that inconsequential game that somehow bones them in the draft slot and thus the opportunity to get a cornerstone for the franchise. Back in the Perkin’s era the Bucs beat the Lions in the finale to fall to 6th in the draft and get Broderick Thomas, while the Lions, Chiefs and Falcons drafted Barry Sanders, Derrick Thomas and Neon Deion right in front of them, in 2008 they beat the Browns in week 16 to go 4-12 and fall behind the Browns who got OT beast Joe Thomas, and the Lions who drafted Megatron while the Bucs settled for Gaines Adams and in 2017 while everyone loved Jameis pitching Koeters “play for a missed 52 yd FG” mentality to connect with Godwin on a 39 yd TD and beat the Aints, it did cost them a chance at either Bradley Chubb or Quenton Nelson. Hopefully this year #5 is high enough to get that special player and not another ****ing bust….

Big Dust: yeah the Bucs unis are way below average, too bad the Glazers simply do not go back to the classic unis of the late ’90s and early 2000’s or go Bucco Bruce and go Culverhouse Creamsicle from back in those early Sombrero days when you were still in the ring blasting bad dudes like Superstar Billy Graham, Ric Flair and Harley Race at the armory with the Bionic Elbow. These new digital clock unis are like something out of a B science fiction movie like the original Rollerball or The Running Man……..

teams like tennessee or cleveland were on even par with us, now we have got worse while these two teams got better and will see the playoffs long before we do. You see what a good GM would do for your team. We will never be better as long as Licht is our GM.

  23. SOEbuc Says:

“Reload not rebuild.” If the Bucs don’t make the playoffs this year, Licht is gonna be gone and it’s gonna be “rebuild not reload.” Only player that would be a lock to stay is Mike Evans. D. Smith, OJ, and Vita good chance as well.
