Arians On Backup Quarterbacks

March 30th, 2019

Still waiting on one snap.

Interesting words from Bucco Bruce Arians this week during the coaches breakfast at the NFL owners meetings in Arizona.

Arians was asked about backup quarterbacks. This was mere hours before the Bucs made it official that Blaine Gabbert (!) was signed as a backup to America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.

It sure seems like Arians wants to keep just two quarterbacks and the second one would have been No. 3 quarterback Ryan Griffin. What seemed to motivate Arians to sign Gabbert (!) was that Griffin has yet to take a snap in an NFL game.

“I’d rather have two unless I have a young, promising guy that I think can become a great two or maybe a one someday. You don’t ever want to lose those because they are so hard to find.

“I see us keeping three right now because I really like ‘Griff’ and what he has shown on tape in practice. I want to see him in ballgames more. I know Blaine. I know Jameis.

“I don’t think you can have enough [quarterbacks].”

Arians went on to reminisce about how he went through three quarterbacks in Arizona one year due to injuries and still made the playoffs.

Injuries to a quarterback are “no excuse to lose,” Arians made clear.

Poor Ryan Griffin. There is always a “but” with hi. It should be his last name. Every coach he’s had in the NFL could say, “I like Ryan Griffin But… “

Gabbert will be the Bucs starting QB in the 2020 season after Winston’s terrible upcoming season. Bucs won’t resign Winston and we’ll be left with Gabbert. Ugh.

  2. Defense Rules Says:

BucsBandit … LOTS of QB talent supposedly that MIGHT be in 2020 draft. IF Jameis does poorly & doesn’t get a long-term contract, Bucs could always franchise-tag him for a year & draft his likely replacement in 2020. LOTS of ‘What If’ scenarios besides “we’ll be left with Gabbert. Ugh.”

  3. Cgmaster27v Says:

Bucs bandit with the first dumb comment of the day

  4. #1bucfan Says:

If Jamis cuts down on turnovers. fumbles an ints an accuracy will come with better foot work an mechanics he will be good he has the talents an now has a coach who can get him to the next level. The dude works is butt off an just needs a little better coaching an maybe keeping his hands to himself lol

Kinda goes against your mantra of “If your franchise QB goes down, you aren’t going to win/make the playoffs “ doesn’t it Joe?

  6. Pickgrin Says:

For a guy turning 30 this year – this Ryan Griffin has eeeked out one hell of a career in the NFL – having NEVER played one snap in a real NFL game….

Now coming into his 7th year – Griffin makes well over $1M per year and has for the last few years.

Nice “work” if you can get it…

  7. Bird Says:

Gabbert has 0 % chance of starting in 2020

    Not even .1 %

  8. Magadude Says:

There is no question Jameis could be the guy in 2020 if he basically overhauls everything he does off and on the field that is not in character of an NFL QB. So yeah, just because totally different and he is good to go.

Now it is haunting us that in Dirk trying to somehow save his job and not play Griffin, we may pick the wrong #2.

  9. Jean Lafitte Says:

The dude given the chance, might’ve all this time, been that diamond in the rough. He has no PS eligibility, so if he gets released, he may be finished in the NFL for good. Might we see him with the XFL in the future and become a star. I hope so. He should be fresh.

  10. Bobby M. Says:

I think if Winston goes down in the season, good chance you’ll see a lot of Griffin. They’ve been keeping him off the radar for a reason.

I think BA just fired a shot across the bow warning the whole team on this statement.

In other words…Quit with the weak mentality and excuses during the game when things go bad. Win the game anyway.

  12. Arian Nation Says:

I like Ryan Griffion, he seems to thow the ball on time and to the right place. I think he will do well in a pinch.

It’s a shame the Buc’s couldn’t loan him to the Alliance to get him some playing time.

  13. PSL Bob Says:

For the better part of last year, particularly once it was evident we wouldn’t make the playoffs, I argued that it was criminal not to let Griffin show what he had in real competition. Why the hell do you carry a guy that long and never put him in the game. I know Koetter was fighting for his job and wanted to win as many games as possible, but someone in the organization, Licht perhaps, should have posed the question, why don’t we see what Griffin can do?

  14. JabooBuc Says:

If you think Ryan Griffen is good, you should check out his brother Peter Griffen. Giggity!

  15. Armor1977 Says:

BucsBandit is a special kind of stupid! smh

  16. Kyle Says:

Tank for Tua 2019…lol, or tank for Clemson qb 2020..haha

  17. Kyle Says:

    Just kidding..I love Jameison…

  18. BucsBandit Says:

LOL @ all the homers defending Winston.

One day you fools will wake up and realize he just isn’t that good. He has flashes of great play but that doesn’t make up for bad decision making that he’s done since his days at FSU and has done now for 4 straight years in the NFL.

  19. jjbucfan Says:

Bucs Bandit-Tom Brady’s stats his first 4 years in the league

    yards-10,233
    Int 38
    TD 69

He didn’t play his first year except 1 drive.

So if you ignore year 1 and add year 5 instead

    yards 13925
    Int 52
    TD 97

    Jameis first 4 years

    yards 14,628
    Int 88
    TD58

Not saying Jameis is Tom Brady but you should really get your head out of your a$$.

  20. jjbucfan Says:

Reverse the TDs and Ints above please for Jameis, LOL

  21. jjbucfan Says:

    Feels like 88 INTs sometimes

  22. KW Buc Says:

jjbucfan… TDs and INTs really don’t mean much, especially if you factor in fumbles

    Compare:

    – wins
    – game winning drives
    – suspensions
    – benchings
    – respect of his teammates

Then you will see what JW3 really brings to the table — not alot

  23. BucsBandit Says:

KW Buc – don’t try to make sensible arguments with JJB, he’s just another one of the those Winston-apologists that will say anything to try and convince people that Winston is good when he’s clearly not.

WINS is a stat the Jameis homers never post when comparing his career to anyone else’s.
