Bruce Arians No. 2

February 18th, 2019

Reporter lauds.

It’s rare to read Bucs news on another team website, but it appears Bob Kraft wants to compete with SI.com and other national sports sites by offering NFL news from other teams on his site.

And that would a piece from Patriots.com writer Don Banks. A former Bucs beat guy for the then-St. Petersburg Times and a former SI.com columnist, Banks now writes for the team-centric Patriots’ site. There, as he did with SI.com, Banks writes about the NFL, not the Patriots.

In a recent column breaking down all head coaches with new teams in 2019, Banks believes Team Glazer had the second-best hire this offseason when they pulled Bucco Bruce Arians out of retirement to take over the Bucs.

The Bucs went for the short-term fix with the 66-year-old Arians, and I like it. The two-time NFL Coach of the Year doesn’t have time to waste and neither does Tampa Bay, which hasn’t made the playoffs since 2007 and is facing a make-or-break season with fifth-year quarterback Jameis Winston. He’s a maddening player at times, but Winston does have talent and the hope is that quarterback-whisperer Arians is exactly the man to bring out the best in him.

Winston is only 21-33 as a starter, with 76 turnovers in 56 games, but Arians believes he can fix some sloppy passing fundamentals and see instant progress from his starting quarterback. The NFC South is a tough slog, but the Bucs as a wild-card qualifier wouldn’t require a miracle. Arians has the first-year track record of success. He helped the 2012 Colts to the playoffs as an almost full-season interim replacement for Chuck Pagano, who was fighting leukemia, and then he went 10-6 in his first season in Arizona in 2013, leading the Cardinals to the playoffs in both 2014 and 2015.

Well, there is a difference between Andrew Luck, Carson Palmer and America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston. Luck is a once-in-a-generation quarterback. Yeah, Joe wrote that. Joe believes Luck is that good.

And Palmer was a seasoned vet, a two-time Pro Bowler who twice guided the Bengals — the Bengals! — to a division title. All Palmer needed was a little tweaking and he was fine.

Jameis may need a new makeover; we shall see. Joe is confident Arians will fix Jameis but at this point in his career, Joe believes Luck and Palmer were better than Jameis when Arians got a hold of those aforementioned quarterbacks.

  1. Bruce Blahak Says:

Jameis belongs in the Vince Young, Jamarcus Russell conversation not Luck and Palmer…

  2. PA Fan Says:

Young and Russel gave no effort. Was all about me and getting paid. I hardly see Winson as that type of man. I am excited to see what Bruce can do with him this offseason!

  3. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

But Jameis gonna be jameis…..he don’ need no coachin’ no!!!

  4. Pickgrin Says:

So Andrew Luck as a rookie was “better than Jameis” is coming into his 5th year in the NFL?

    I call bullsh!t

  5. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

…..’Specaiily from no white coach, no!!!

  6. Easy Says:

Jameis is average. 3rd tier of starting QBs.

  7. Loyaltotheend Says:

Yes, Luck was better as a rookie than Jameis is now, sucks to hear but it’s the truth. Jameis still plays like a rookie for stretches. Luck won and continues to win no matter the talent around him Jameis supposedly needs to play with 7-8 other pro bowlers to be an effective qb according to his defenders and apologist

  8. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

JW will do just fine , what concerns me is alt right thinking they are imitating African American linguistics on this site. Cmon Joe , you are better than that , get it outta here.

  9. Bird Says:

    Agree joe

Getting easier to see which joe writes these articles . LJ and OJ and IRA

It all comes down to Jameis under Arians direction. He has to take next step. (He will be better …but how much.) Or he I’ll be taking next step out of town cause next year it becomes 25 mil per year plus . You can’t reward average play with 25 mil per year plus.

Just like gmc in other article. Can’t pay him 13 mil for his recent production.

  10. Bird Says:

    Pickrin

Luck was 11-5 as a rookie and they made playoffs.
If you remember , He had no defense. And no offensive line just like Jameis. I think they had a kicker but could be wrong ?

Colts had Good receivers but not like what Tampa has last year at receiver and tight end the last 2 years.

  11. Ndog Says:

Jameis is better than Luck, it really isn’t even close. People will laugh at this but time will prove me correct. I know what I see and Luck good but Jameis is better.

  12. Bird Says:

And colts were 2-14 the year before Lucks arrival with injured neck manning.

  13. BucOutWest Says:

The chemical Winston and Arians translating into wins will be some to see and even speculate. But yeah Joe, can you remove the ignorant racist? Let’s try to keep that out of football at least

  14. Kalind Says:

I actually see Jameis and Luck similarly. Luck has the *ahem* luck of being in a cake division and a cake conference (mostly). Jameis has been marred by horrendous coaching (looking at you bajakian) horrrrrrrrrrible defense, (Mike Smiff) lack of ANY running game and injury. Even with a meh OL he does pretty well. Is he Rodgers or Brees? Of course not!! Those guys have over a decade of experience on him. How could he be?

And this is my point with Jameis, youth. He still Soooooo young. Stick with him. By the time he’s 28-30 he’s going to be fantastic. I can see a Rivers esque career for him at this rate.

  15. Loyaltotheend Says:

    Ndog

You are always good for a laugh when it comes to Jameis thanks for starting my morning off right

Jameis faces off against Luck at Ray Jay this year so we can see it for ourselves

  16. Bird Says:

    Ndog

    Smh

Dude. It’s not really close. Evem joe who is almost a big fan of Jameis as you says otherwise. 99 percent of America says otherwise.

I don’t get it. Homers exist but you take it to a scary level.
You have to be Jameis ‘s cousin. Or are you Jameis himself?

  17. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Can we give the man a running game and half a defense please?

  18. Joe Says:

    remove the ignorant racist?

Joe doesn’t catch all the comments. Can you be specific?

  19. Loyaltotheend Says:

If Jameis was as good as Luck he’d be a God in Tampa

This team and fans are so desperate for a franchise qb

  20. Defense Rules Says:

@Loyaltotheend … “Jameis faces off against Luck at Ray Jay this year so we can see it for ourselves.” Wow Loyal, and I thought it was the Buccaneers’ TEAM facing off against the Indy TEAM. My bad I guess because I always under the impression that it’s fruitless to compare one player’s stats against another player’s stats in an individual game, and especially in a TEAM sport.

@Ndog … “Jameis is better than Luck, it really isn’t even close.” Ndog, you’re perhaps going a little ‘over-the-top’ when it comes to your unbridled support of Jameis? Banks is right in his article when he says of Jameis … “He’s a maddening player at times, but Winston does have talent. Winston is only 21-33 as a starter, with 76 turnovers in 56 games, but Arians believes he can fix some sloppy passing fundamentals and see instant progress from his starting quarterback.”

Let’s all hope so. This truly is a ‘make-or-break year’ for Jameis. No excuses.

  22. RODNEY J ALLEN Says:

Morgus probably just a racist troll
Oh n Bruce really.? Nobody should be in Jamarcus Russell category

  23. Destinjohnny Says:

    Jameis isn’t a bust
    He just isn’t elite/really good

  24. Ndog Says:

Just wait and see who will have the better career when it is all said and done.

  25. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

Hate to mention a name that deserves no mention Joe , but Morgus the Magnificent has no place among the civilized .

  26. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

BucsFanSince1976….I’m simply echoing Winston’s own words. If you don’t like what he says, I understand.

  27. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

You know exactly what you are.

  28. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

    …and you do not.

  29. Ndog Says:

    Luck
    G. Att. Comp comp % yards. TD INT Sacks Rating
    7 293 162 55.3 1,881 15 12 15 74.9

    16 627 339 54.1 4,374 23 18 41 76.5

    Winston

    11 378 244 64.6 2,992 19 14 27 90.2

Luck comp% 57.8, 25.5 TDs per year, 13.7 INT per year, 83.7 Rating
    J W comp% 61.9, 22 TDs per year, 14.5 INT per year, 88.2 Rating

So here are the facts for both players in their first 4 seasons. So when you take the ESPN glasses off that most of you have been fitted with and can’t think for yourself you see the truth and that is they had very similar careers in their first 4 years but one plays against Brees, Newton and Ryan and the other was playing against Tom Savage/Osweindler, Mariotta/ Gabbert and Blake Bottles.

  30. Jonathan Lipnicki Says:

I would argue that Arians is the top hire…only time will tell I suppose.

  31. Stevbobucfan Says:

Never hear the positive stuff Jameis has done it’s all about the negative stuff. Maybe there’s more negative than positive at this moment I don’t really watch those types of stats. I think Jameis has been immature and I don’t think Koetter had the patience or ability to deal with it. I want to see what Arians do with Jameis and then I ll feel better before I start comparing him to Russell or Young or calling for him to be kicked out of Tampa

  32. Bird Says:

    Ndog

The guys who wears FSU glasses.
I don’t watch espn. Just buc games since they started. Born and raised in that area.

    Hahahahaha

Dude. Ndog. Send me your address. We need to get a doctor over there immediately.

“Jameis is hands down better than luck and it’s not even close”

I beg you. I really do. Please take your hands away from that man’s crotch.

  33. Ndog Says:

So Bird I see yet again you ignore the facts. Seems right for you cause as we all know facts don’t matter just your opinion right? One day you’ll see but you won’t be man or woman enough to admit you were wrong.

  34. Stanglassman Says:

If that doesn’t get you banned then that tells more about the proprietors than the participate. We know who he is.

  35. Stanglassman Says:

NDog- They’re entitled to their own opinions but not their own set of facts. Way to back it up with facts. I’m with you, Jameis is my Qb.

  36. 813bucboi Says:

    BA was a good hire….

    winston is a good QB….

those are the facts….simple as that….

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  37. Bird Says:

    Ndog

All the players voted and said Jameis is over rated /over hyped
They love facing him Cause he loves turning the ball over.
    There are articles after articles.

Every analyst on tv says the same thing. Not just espn ,… nfl network , cbs , bleacher report. Fox .. etc etc etc

But you … feel differently and put up stats when the eye test is what people need.
Will he be better under Arians – yup
Do I say last year that he gets this year – yup. Go back and look at my posts.
Not a hater like you believe. He is a buc so I support. And don’t hate him like joe hates Desean Jackson. I think he is average. And his off field problems are an issue for me.

You just credit every buc win with Jameis. Compare him to every great qb ever. And every loss is everyone’s fault but his.

    That’s a fact.

  38. 1sparkybuc Says:

Even with all the deficiencies at ol, rb, and the defense, Jameis still owns virtually every stat there is as a Buccaneer QB. It appears that coaching was also an issue. Presuming that issue is no longer a problem, Jameis should soon be winning games and extending his records. Some of us will be happy about that. Some won’t. I believe this coaching staff will have more success with Jameis than they would without him. Jameis needs an adjustment. Other areas of the team need an overhaul.

  39. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I like the Bruce Arians hire.

That said, I think it’s impact is being exaggerated. A lot of smoke is being blown up our rear quarters, and I’ll believe it when I actually see it.

Oh, I’ll root for the team. I’m all in. But after more than ten years and multiple coaching hires, I have heard all of this before. It’s time to put up or shut up.

If the team frees up $60m with the move I outlined elsewhere, that will give them $75m to work with. Re-signing our free agents will take roughly $30+million. That leaves $54m in the bank. Plenty.

What Arians does with that will go a long way.

  40. Loyaltotheend Says:

    @Defense Rules

Not comparing the winner just pointing out Luck comes to Tampa this year and fans who wrongly think Jameis is better can see them on the same field to see how far Jameis has to go

  41. Architek Says:

    NDog-
It’s okay, you are good to support your argument with stats but the bottom line is Winston hasn’t led his teams to the playoffs and Luck has dragged teams to the playoffs.

That should pretty much end the debate. It’s not all on Winston but a huge chunk of it is with the turnovers and decision making.

It’s not personal bro – this year everyone will see for better or worse who Jameis is.

  42. Stanglassman Says:

I think we figured out the problem. Bird listens to the national media to get his opinions about Jameis instead of watching the games and believing the facts laid out before him. Just kidding Bird, hate all you want.

  43. Pickgrin Says:

Thanks for posting the stats ndog.

Like I said – Joe’s claim that Luck was better in his rookie year than Jameis is coming into his 5th year is BS!

Luck had a 54.1% completion rate and a 76.5 QB rating his rookie year

Last year Jameis had a 64.6 completion rate and a 90.2 QB rating.

    Those #s aren’t even close!

  44. Architek Says:

Stats don’t really tell the story here, you can turn on the film and clearly see whose the more consistent and better quarterback. Cmon guys you’re not really serious right?

  45. MrCarlSr Says:

The honest truth about The current qb Winston, is that he is so inconsistent. In his actions, in his playing, as a person in general. This goes back to his college days. The report of tuning out the coaches last season is not shocking, after seeing his previous attitudes towards authority. I am no expert in anything, but I am sure the most important aspect of a member of a team sport, is to be a coachable player. Talent will get you only so far, and so far we in Tampa are nauseous from this immature diva!
    #lastchanceforwinston

  46. Loyaltotheend Says:

Stats are for losers when you start throwing out numbers it means you’ve lost the debate

    Compare game winning drives
    And numbers when they matter

Luck has 4 playoff wins a few over higher seeds on the road

Jameis has lost his last 10 road starts and isn’t clutch

I hope he gets to Lucks level but he’s not there

  47. miken Says:

@ndog… jameis thru 4 years has the same #’s as Blake Bortles
    bortles 1st 4 years…
92 tds 56 ints 14595 yds and rating 83.7. Jameis did have more turnovers thru 4 years though.
Luck took a terribleroster to afc champ game and just making the playioffs w that crap roster was something. O line was beyond awful
    @piggrin… yes, thats correct.

  48. tickrdr Says:

Did you know that the AVERAGE QB rating of all of the QBs in the NFL in 2012 was 85.6 !

Did you know that the AVERAGE QB rating of all of the QBs in the NFL in 2018 was 92.9 ! The average completion percentage was 64.9%.

Congrats to America’s QB, ProBowler Jameis Winston who completed 64.6% of his passes in 2018, and had a QB rating of 90.2!

    tickrdr

  49. PriMech54 Says:

“Luck has dragged his team to the playoffs”

Look, I’m all for being objective, and Andrew Luck is certainly the better quarterback right now, today. But lets not ignore the fact that he plays in arguably the absolute WORST division in football whilst Jameis Winston has played in arguably the absolute BEST division in football. These types of these can net you a win or a loss on sundays; when you’re playing either cupcake teams or borderline HOF quarterbacks with playoff caliber teams around them. Some of you guys need to take the lenses off. Arians will get this thing right. Just sit back and enjoy the ride, preferably with your mouths shut.

  50. tickrdr Says:

    @PriMech54:

I certainly cannot argue that the Bucs are in a tougher division than the Colts.
But I certainly can argue that the best division in football over the last decade or so is the one with the New England Patriots in it.

    tickrdr

  51. PriMech54 Says:

    @tickrdr

… nah. I respect your counter-point, but it’s not even close. There’s a reason the Patriots have dominated for almost two decades straight netting first round bye after first round bye. It’s part of their formula in getting to 9 super bowls. You could likely count the times the Jets, Dolphins and Bills have made the playoffs in that time on one hand. Every NFC South team has a Super Bowl appearance and/or win during the same period.

    Not even close.

  52. PriMech54 Says:

And to boot, I did mention “arguably” in my original point, but the AFC east is probably the weakest example. The only true contenders are probably the AFC North or the NFC East.

  53. tired of all the hate Says:

Ah the Joe Bucs Fan comment section….. an unending black hole of ignorant racists and fans that actually want the team to win. From where I sit i see just a few viewpoints on Jameis Winston.

    1. People who see the potential, see the stats, see the leadership ability, see the dedication to his craft and the fact that he is only 25 years old and has put up better numbers through his 1st four years than almost ANY QB EVER. Yes he needs to cut down on turnovers & have better decision making.. duh … He needs to prove that he can do that or the Bucs should definitely look in a different direction.
    2. National media and fans. People who focus on their own teams and only see the idiotic headlines on PFT or Bleacher report or ESPN .. For example “Jameis Winston would not start for a single other team in the NFL if he were cut from the BUCS”. This is literally something Mike Florio wrote and ran with on his biased site. How ignorant and unknowable about football are you to even say something like that, let alone write it? All these talking heads don’t do ANY research on the Bucs all they see is headlines and all they want to do is make an interesting topic for debate. AKA Colin Cowheard. They have all made up their minds that Jameis is a bust with 0 knowledge of the actual situation. Then theres All the ignorant fans are just sheep who consume these ignorant talking points and just parrot what they hear.
    3. Racists. This is very simple to see and the racism is abundant even on this site where the Joes HEAVILY moderate what comments are even posted on here. In this very thread I will point out just 1 of the biggest/easiest racist to see. It is “Morgus the Magnificent Says” his quotes are ” But Jameis gonna be jameis…..he don’ need no coachin’ no!!!” and “…..’Specaiily from no white coach, no!!!”. This is everyday on JBF. These people are everywhere, they love to make fun of the way Jameis speaks, about how he is a rapist (no actual proof, he said she said) and talk about crab legs. All these ignorant people have for JW is hate and they cannot look at the game of football objectively. It is so sad people can hate someone based solely on the color of their skin.
    4. I haven’t seen this opinion much at all. People that are knowledgeable about football, they watch all the games, have been watching for a long time and know what a good player looks like. They see the work ethic and commitment, they see the stats good and bad. They see the off the field issues and they aren’t ready to commit to JW. They want him to prove it. They don’t hate him because he is Black and from Alabama, they just are a bit concerned with his decision making. Of course they are going to give him another year to prove he can put it all together. ex Ira K

Long story short.. If you want Jameis Winston out of Tampa before he finishes his rookie deal, it’s extremely likely that your either ignorant/lacking football knowledge or blatenly racist.

For everyone else it is a simple answer for Jameis. He needs to put it all together or else the Bucs need to move on

  54. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

    Here’s the racist comment….
