Team Glazer Swinging For The Fences

January 9th, 2019

“Mr. Glazer, I appreciate all you’ve invested and what you’re doing to build a winner. But could I just get few more bucks to order a Kangol hat to match this jacket? I want to be cool like Bruce.”

Until now, it’s fair to say Team Glazer did a miserable job picking head coaches since Chucky was bounced after back-to-back 9-7 seasons.

First was the total rebuild while spending little cash on coaches and players approach with Raheem Morris.

Then the botched plan switched to late-in-the-process hire Greg Schiano and a huge budget for free agency. That colossal mess flamed out in a hurry.

Attention turned to Coach My Scheme, Lovie Smith, and his Josh McCown-or-bust plan on offense. If ever there was a flawed plan from Day 1, it was Lovie’s.

The action moved to Dirk Koetter, whose defensive approach was more hands-off than Joe at the Golden Corral brussel sprouts station. And Koetter’s loyalty to mediocrity — or worse — was unique and costly.

So after those four fails, Team Glazer came to the table last week with open arms, open eyes, an open checkbook and, as Koetter might say, a big MF stick. Bruce Arians got a four-year deal and Joe would be willing to wager it’s for $7 million per year. Oh, and Arians appear to have gotten a fat budget for his staff and the green light to be his free-speaking self.

Don’t discount the fact that it’s an extra bold move for a rather secretive ownership group to hire a 66-year-old guy known for speaking his mind.

Team Glazer didn’t hesitate.

Yesterday’s hire sends a loud message — and it’s one fans can embrace.

Team Glazer wants to win badly and just took a big step to make sure everyone knows it.

    I’m thinking the panic to turn Jameis into a franchise QB is the main reason here and can’t be overstated. Bucs have a roster that can be easily blown up – no being locked in to long-term contracts. They could have gone the direction of bringing in a young guy who can grow into managing a team – it’s a very trendy direction teams are taking.

    Arians was brought in to keep Tampa out of purgatory – jumping from one QB to the next hoping to catch lightning in a bottle. Jameis is still very much the guy and Arians is here because of it.

  2. Buddy Says:

    The only real chance BA has is if he lets go of all of KLUEKESSKOETTERS friends that he hired. Like you mentioned in a previous column Joe culture has to be changed. Koetter hirer hos best friend as equiomeht manager to snitch and report back on the players in the locker room. The trainers and equipment have the most interaction with players than anyone but the coaches. This support staff tatted out many players about injuries and their daily doings. Players don’t trust the staff or the environment of their workplace. It’s known in the building that the staff regularly went around bad mouthing the players over not getting respected or tipped at years end. Culture change will start when BA changes all the support staff and brings in true professionals and not Koetter friends from previous jobs.

  3. Lord Cornelius Says:

    Joe:

    I can’t remember honestly – did Licht hire Koetter as OC? And was it his decision to promote to HC / was he the leader of the HC search as he is now?

    Just genuinely curious. The other day Florio had an article saying this was Licht’s 3rd chance to pick a head coach. I wrote a comment saying at most this was his 2nd since he wasn’t the one who picked Lovie (since he was hired by Lovie). For whatever reason the site moderated it and didn’t allow it to post. Tried multiple times and it kept saying “awaiting moderation” and never posted to the site despite tons of other comments being allowed. I was just trying to get the facts right lol.

  4. Not there yet Says:

    I don’t think they were swinging for the fence or trying to make a splash hire, he was simply the best coach for this job. I think we’ll find out just how screwed the roster is and how weak the locker room is real fast.

  5. AlteredEgo Says:

    So much at stake starting with Jameis and the Bucs long term….fingers crossed but still some very serious decisions hang in the balance for the GBoyz and the franchise going forward….remember when the RayJay was SRO and filled with Bucs fans in full throat !…remember that ?

  6. 813bucboi Says:

    sounds like another safe pick to me….hiring a 66year old coach isnt bold, its safe…..

    but since he’s such an experienced HC with a winning record and glazers as well as fans want to win badly, we should expect playoffs this up coming season…..the talent is there….some folks believe the coaching is finally here….dirk won 5games….surely bruce is better and should be able to win at least 10…..

    oh goody!!!….i cant wait!!!!

    #DEFENSEWINSCHAMPIONSHIPS!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  7. SC Bucs Fan Says:

    But, according to the brilliant minds that post here, unless we signed Belichick we signed the wrong guy. And, if we signed Belichick, we’d stink because of Licht. And if we fired Licht and hired John Schneider, we’d still stink because of the players. And so on, and so on….

  8. D-Rome Says:

    I’m thinking the panic to turn Jameis into a franchise QB is the main reason here and can’t be overstated.

    This cannot be overstated enough. There is panic at One Buc over Jay-Miss. After four years there are still questions. When it comes to franchise QBs if you have to ask the question after four years as to whether or not he’s the guy, then he’s not the guy. I don’t want to hear from anyone about “fixing” him. The QBs that flourished under Arians never needed “fixing”.

  9. Larry Says:

    Almost anything will be an improvement over the last 2 years!! At one point in 2017 Arians was down to his 4th QB. THAT IS MOST DEFINITELY A PROBLEM WITH THE OFFENSIVE LINE!!! Will be interesting to see what he will do with that. He will definitely install a culture of winning. Putting that culture on the field will be harder to do. Winning is a mindset just like losing. He has a good offensive already. Let’s see if he can turn it into a GREAT offensive and a top 10 defense. If he does, the Bucs will be in the playoffs year one. That may be a lot to ask of anyone.

  10. SC Bucs Fan Says:

    I don’t know if its panic but you certainly have to squeeze every drop of “potential” out of JW this year and see if he’s the guy for the future.

  11. CaliBuc Says:

    I see big things for 2019, solid move by the Bucs

  12. ben Says:

    It worries me if the big reason Arians was hired is for improvement of Winston. After 4 years why should results be any better for Winston rated 20th by the nfl .. (ok their is a slim chance) …. also concerned that Arians was not wanted by his old team who fired their coach if he is that good..Why wasn’t Arians getting more attention from other teams needing coaches? Yet as along time suffering fan i surly hope he can be the bucs savior!!!

  13. Robert Says:

    to hell with crabman, aka jamyth “I dint do nuffin” wiffman

    loving how quickly things are moving and decisions being made. like people actually are getting $hit done. hasn’t felt like this in a LONG LONG time. like not since chucky time!

  14. Todd Says:

    Buckner is out.

    What does that mean?

    It means BA has a definitive plan on how to get to the fitting room for a Super Bowl ring. His moves won’t be predictable, which I like.

    No one should feel safe. Mejax, you sold your house. Get ‘da fu outta here. McCoy, your paycheck is to phat. Get ‘da fu outta here. Offensive line…all but center and Marpet…Get ‘da fu outta here.

    Who else?

  15. Todd Says:

    @ben

    Oh, I don’t know. Ask Big Ben. Peyton and the three other All-Pro QB’s BA whispered to.

  16. 813bucboi Says:

    we hired dirk to develop winston…..now we’ve hired bruce to “fix” winston….

    when are the bucs going to hire someone that can fix the defense or the team in general not just the qb position….

  17. Robert Says:

    If BA does his coaching this efficiently and decisively, I’d think crabman is on a real short leash…… lol

    old guys have little patience.

    you guys couldn’t be more wrong about all this being for the crabman.

  18. Jonathan Lipnicki Says:

    Licht Weight saved by Bucco Bruce…looking forward to the new regime.

  19. stpetebucsfan Says:

    How does anybody know what kind of attention BA was getting from other teams or their opinion of him.

    He was RETIRED!!! Perhaps the league believed him?

    In addition we didn’t even know the Buc’s were interested until very recently. Perhaps other teams approached and neither BA nor the team decided to share.

    This might actually be a good thing. Would you rather hire a coach who had his agent…as Joe might say…abusing his cell phone minutes reporting interest from other teams?

    Here is a question for you Joe and others….wonder how long ago the Bucs began working on this deal? They knew Koetter was gone for quite awhile. Seems to me they must have had quiet feelers out to BA a long time ago. He comes here with everything in place including staff? Dude is prepared and as good as he is to do all of that in a few days seems pretty amazing. IMHO the Bucs and Arians knew about this before anybody else had an idea.

  20. Buc1987 Says:

    Just watched.

    A Football Life : Bruce Arians….. on YouTube.

    I’m pretty pysched.

    Robert you’re always “wrong” when it comes to the “crabman”.

  21. Robert Says:

    @87

    you mean when I said he lacked character and was a POS

    then he repeated similar previous actions imposing his will on an unsuspecting female resulting in suspension, season in flames and many, man lives ruined/jobs lost

    aaaaaaalrrriiiiiighty then

  22. TKiv18 Says:

    Just because you’ve already decided that Jameis is a bust; anointing him “Jay-miss” or any other brilliant nickname you geniuses have given; it makes little difference to the team, the coaches, or our front office. They obviously hired BA because they want him to help their young QB flourish. It’s not a panic move, it’s a smart move to bring a known coaching commodity, one that has a history of success with QB’s. And this is just my opinion; because I’ll never be able to sway someone who’s mind is already made up; but, no, Jameis doesn’t need “fixing.” He needs a coach. He need to be coached up. If you think Jameis has already peaked, that’s your prerogative. Thankfully your opinion really isn’t relevant. BA came here for a reason. Enjoy the show.

  23. jmarkbuc Says:

    ‘They obviously hired BA because they want him to help their young QB flourish.”

    No disrespect to BA, but that’s exactly why Klueless was given the HC job…

    I wish Bruce all the best, but there is no guarantee he can turn chicken sh!t into chicken salad..I hope he can, but being a Buc Fan as long as I have, you learn to wait and see….

  24. 813bucboi Says:

    ben

    i agree…

    1 reason why teams didnt want bruce is because they wouldve had to compensate the cardinals….meaning giving up draft picks…..

    and its telling that the cardinals price was so low….they basically said, you can have him because we can do better….

    winston needs a defense not another deep ball passing attack….

    but like you, i hope glazers got it right and we’re in the playoffs this year….

  27. ChipBuc Says:

    More than anything Jameis needs a Oline, and a running game to be a winning QB. All he needs is what most successful QBs have, a complete offense. Oh a defense that can hold a 4th quarter lead would be nice too.

  28. Knoxville Bucs Fan Says:

    So when are the Glazers gonna introduce him to the fans or is the statement all we gonna get? I’m sure JBF and The Sage has a ton of questions for the Quarterback Whisperer

  29. Couch Fan Says:

    As I said before. The Glazers arent the most football savy owners in the league but its crystal clear that they WANT to win and will do/spend as much as they can to accomplish that. Thats all I can ask out of them. Thank you Glazers.

  30. Elita Vita Says:

    Let’s all remember then, that should this not work out NOT to blame the Glazers. They did their part. They hired an excellent coach, opened up the vault and is apparently giving Arians a wonderful budget to succeed. It is now up to Licht and Arians to assemble this team and coach them up.
    Glazers….You Rock!!

  31. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

    Everyone saying that BA is going to steer jameis in the right direction (hope you are right), you have to acknowledge that Koetter (ATL OC) & Monken (HC/OC) are obviously great at their jobs to get jobs of coaching qbs/offense to immediately after here, in addition jameis has a personal coach who is a “QB whisperer” allegedly that he works with all the time. He was also coached by Jimbo. So that is 4 QB gurus that winston has had and he is still mediocre currently, at some point he has to crap or get off the pot and rise above 20th best qb in the league or nick foles looks like a person to turn to. Licht is a horrible GM and has not built a wonning team but it looks like arians will be the top dog in this franchise from here on out

    From what I read – they agreed to the swap of picks to avoid a longer battle where AZ was trying to argue they deserved compensation. Originally the position the league held was that AZ wasn’t owed anything.

    And BA expressed no interest in other teams. They weren’t options for him per all reports. There is nothing reported about teams avoiding BA as an option. Per pretty much all media BA was one of the top couple candidates if available.

    I understand you’re mad at the hire vs Richards, but this narrative just seems inaccurate based on all reports.

    in the end none of us know wtf is going on behind the scenes. We’re just guessing and hoping for the best.

    I would hardly call this one hitting it out of the fences yet. After years of losing, it’s a hard sell for any coach in Tampa.

    Although, hitting it out of the fences would have been Jim Harbaugh.

    Arians? Well, after the Lovie Smith retread, there are going to be some skeptics. It isn’t really fair to Arians, but it is what it is. He’ll have to give us reason to believe.

    The truth is, Winston has been average to slightly above average most of the time. His picks and fumbles were the big issue, and this year he reduced the fumbles by more than half, and he only threw 14 picks (4 in one game).

    if folks remember, i said bruce would be better served as president of football ops not HC…..

    but imo, its very telling that no one else called bruce and the price was so low….teams are going younger at HC…..thats no risk it no biscuit…..

    @joe and everyone. I don’t live in tampa anymore but I have never understood the backlash against the glazers. Seems they are great owners. They always swing for the fence!They have offered Parcells, spurrier, had chip kelly,gruden, gruden again, harbaugh ect ect. Each one of those guys was the biggest name at the time. They tried to be innovative and find the next tomlin in Rah and brought back lovie (which everyone applauded at the time) coming off a 10-6 record. Seems they are always trying to win but never meadling. I think their finances took a dive in the real estate bubble and buying the soccer team from 2008 to 2012 but other than that have always spent. Maybe it hasn’t always worked out and firing Jon was a terrible move, but damn – they’ve always tried… oh, and they franchise would be in another city without them. Pretty damn good ownersin my book.

    813

    None of us know if Cleveland called or not. None of us know who was calling Arians and what he was saying back. It’s pointless for us to debate this as if we do know because no one can prove anything with that.

    And the price wasn’t low. There was no price. The league said AZ was owed nothing.

    AZ made a last minute stand/argument for compensation once it was 99% official BA was going to be going to Tampa. Both teams/the league settled on a throwaway draft pick to speed up the process.

    To say they were setting a draft pick price to other teams is inaccurate. They were told by the league they weren’t owed anything. The draft pick thing was a last ditch thing by AZ.

    Again 813, I go back to how the “Honey Badger” just caved when talking about Arians. It goes beyond the X’s and O’s here.

    I act like? — Man, I just don’t know what your point is with all of this. Sorry that you are disappointed about Kris Richard and I think he will be a great coach. But I am not acting like anything! I just think Arians was a really good hire for us. Nothing more, nothing less.

    “JW is gone dummies. LeVeon Bell will be taking his money and we will draft Will Grier”

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Will Grier is garbage. No thanks.
    Notified his teammates on the DAY OF THE GAME that he was sitting out?
    Yea, great leader.
  79. J dubb Says:
    I was hoping arians was calling plays but I won’t get down yet because leftwich was groomed by arians and may turn out to be a gem…monken didn’t do a half bad job last year, his first calling plays so let’s reserve judgement
  80. Bucsfanman Says:
    T REX- The hope, I suppose, is that he’s a better coach than he was a QB.
    As to Arians, if he is the “CEO” as you describe, we’re in better shape already. The Glazer boys don’t know how to run a team.
    On Pagano, I’m mezza-mezza! Good credentials, just not overly exciting.
  81. Pittsshore Says:
    @tampabadydemon: JW lies to his fans, coaches and teammates about groping an Uber driver…..then rolled on his two other NFL player homies from other teams (one of which is in prison for rape). Does that make him a leader????
  82. Tampa Bay Demon Says:
    ^^ Pagano’s coming too???
    just playin 😉
  83. T REX Says:
    @ J dubb – Thank you. Finally, one honest person. I thought we were getting BA the play caller not Byron Leftwich. Yuck. This is going to end badly. Bet.
  84. JimmyJack Says:
    813 Why do you find it necessary to rain on Our parade?
    I think you are acting selfish because we didn’t hire the guy you wanted.
    Lookan. The only reason Bruce came here is because he sees a talented football team he can win with. Not a chance in hell he came out of retirement to take on a rebuild project.
    Bruce is here to win a Super Bowl. It’s the only thing he wants and it’s his only goal. We just won the off-season. It’s a good day to be a Buccaneer fan. Get on board and get over your crush on Dallas’ coordinator of 2019.
  85. John Says:
    Just finished watching “Its a football life” with BA. I can only say that if he can’t get this thing in Tampa turned around into a winning culture then God only knows who can… This seems like the perfect coach at this moment in time….
  86. Robert Says:
    just hope byron teaches JW the windup!
    byron and jdubya seem like two peas in a pod. bet they’ll click nicely.
    it doesn’t take a rocket scientist for either role. chemistry is more important.
    they both gone b lickin dubya’s!!!!
  87. JimmyJack Says:
    Did the Glazers really pick Bruce? Yeah, sure they wanted him but it seems like Bruce kinda picked the Bucs.
  88. Stanglassman Says:
    Yeah this Bowles decision is huge one of the biggest draws of getting BA. We were not only counting on him but he was bringing all his assistants. The DL and two DB coaches. If he chooses Chicago it splits this coaching tree down the middle.
  89. 813bucboi Says:
    jimmyjack
    im not raining on anyone’s parade….
    bruce is a good coach….better than what we had….
    i voted approval on the poll…..
    it seems as if folks believe bruce was hired in order to “fix” winston….imo, he doesnt need to be “fixed”……the defense is the unit that needs to be fixed….
    we won the offseason the past 2-3years….lol…every year we win the offseason…..
    but im happy to hear you say bruce aint here to rebuild…..that means playoffs next year with an SB soon to follow…..
    im was on board with dirk until he gave a reasons not to…..i’ll be the same with bruce…..
    #WINSTON=2019SCAPEGOAT!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!
  90. 813bucboi Says:
    chill with the, “football life” stuff….lol…ive seen it…just like ive seen others….a football life hasnt painted everyone as a failure yet….lol….that show makes everyone look like HOFers….lol….
    if that episode gave you info about bruce that you didnt know before, then you didnt know who he was in the first place….lol….
    bill walsh tony dungy and charles haley were the best episodes imo….
    #WINSTON=2019SCAPEGOAT!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!
  91. 813bucboi Says:
    bucsfan
    we’ve improved since smitty was shown the door….improved greatly when dirk was sent packing….
    bruce is no doubt better than dirk….cant make that statement about monken vs leftwich just yet….or the DC and defensive coaches…..
    games have to be played before i say “we’re better”…..been down that road before….
    #WINSTON=2019SCAPEGOAT!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!
  92. Doctor_berto Says:
    Why would Bowles pick Tampa over Chicago? Tampa has zero young talent on defense thanks to Licht. Chicago has like 5 or 6 All-Pro players on their defense.
  93. JimmyJack Says:
    813 Winston has turnover issues. That aspect does need to be fixed. But I agree with you. I don’t care why they hired Bruce but he is not here to fix one player. He is a football coach who knows how to create a winner. Ridiculous to think that’s all he is going to do here.
  94. Lord Cornelius Says:
    813 “why would folks publicly list who they’re interviewing with but hide who bruce is talking to”
    Why would a team want to say “We called Bruce Arians but he had no interest”?
    It’d just make them look bad.
    I do agree Winston doesn’t need to be “fixed” necessarily – in terms of what this team’s #1 problem is.
    However – Winston also definitely has room for growth and potential jump in play. He’s been an above average starter IMO; but if he was a top 5 starter on a highly efficient scoring offense it would negate a lot of the bad defense/ run game. i.e. Aaron Rodgers
    I do believe BA will improve the defense though. He’s not a one side of the ball coach.
    I just hope we can f&cking win man lol
  95. SOEbuc Says:
    NOW HIT A GRAND SLAM AND SIGN KAREEM HUNT!!!!!
  96. 813bucboi Says:
    realistically, it should be a no brainer as to what team to be an DC…..bears defense was the best in the league…..and they have a playoff team in place….
    glazers will have to sweeten the pot and overpay for TB and maybe even make him assistant HC…..maybe even successor….lol…
    #WINSTON=2019SCAPEGOAT!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!
  97. Roadwarrior Says:
    Hay buddy
    Did you get fired by the equipment manager because you’ve been saying the same thing for some time now. I think you said it best.
    Whining like a little ho.
  98. JimmyJack Says:
    The key with Bruce is the expectations he brings to the table. A coach of his pedigree is expected to turn this team around in one off-season. No other coach we could have realistically hired would bring those same expectations.
    I get it we have have witnessed failed expectations for the past 2 decades. Personally I won’t let past dissapoints NT prevent me from be excited this time around…….but to each their own.
  99. Defense Rules Says:
    @Kobe Faker … “No one in the last 50 years has a resume like BA working with Manning, Big Ben, Luck and resurrecting Palmers career. He knows what he is doing with QBs. BA knows exactly what JW needs, lacks and what he needs improving.”
    Kobe, Arians has certainly had success working with those QBs, but take a good look at the names: Manning, Rothlesberger, Luck and yes, Palmer. They’re all pretty good in their own right (yes, even Carson Palmer, who’s closer to being like Jameis than any of the other three IMO).
    And although he’s looked at as a ‘QB Whisperer’ Bruce has always done his best when his offenses have super strong DEFENSES behind them. The 2013, 2014 & 2015 Cardinals are classic examples of that (they ranked #7, #5, #7 in Points Allowed in those years … once the defenses fell off in 2016 & 2017, so did the Cardinals winning records).
    Gut feel is that Bruce Arians will surprise a lot of Bucs fans with where he puts his focus. Our offense SHOULD improve (in terms of Points Scored), but I see our defense improving even more (in terms of Points Allowed).
  100. 813bucboi Says:
    LC
    FYI, eric b. declined/turned down an interview with the cardinals when they asked for an interview….and that decline was made public…..they showed interest, made it public and then were declined….happens all the time in the nfl….
    but it is what it is…..bruce is here….im just happy it aint dirk for another year….
    i just want to win too bro…..
    #WINSTON=2019SCAPEGOAT!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!
  101. buddy Says:
    @Roadwarrior Nope nice try tho. I just know too many people in that building that say that is the root of all the problems. Players and staff know who’s real and who isn’t.
  102. Roadwarrior Says:
    Sorry buddy
    You just had my Curiosity.
    If that’s the case I’m sure he’s smart enough to clean house.
  103. Tampa Bay Demon Says:
    Lol wow this is getting ridiculous. Anyway, it’s a good day to be a Bucs fan with fresh changes coming that are welcome.
    Definitely nothing wrong with anyone sharing some thoughts on “A Football Life”. It’s one of the best television shows ever created, and the Arians episode is definitely one of the best. Enjoy.
  104. stpetebucsfan Says:
    I do not believe BA sees exactly the same challenge as we do.
    First off he sees a QB with physical talent who he is reported to have claimed was poorly coached. If BA just gets in JW’s head we’re good to go. JW had already begun to improve in that area by the end of the year. Much better decisions including throwing the ball OB when the play wasn’t there.
    In JBF parlance…BA will do a better job of expanding the “good” Jameis and limiting the “bad” Jameis.
    BA does see the challenge of our defense. Get Greedy Williams and our defensive backfield could actually become good. I like our young safeties and Carlton shows promise at the other corner and we haven’t even talked about Hargreaves.
    An OL or two and a good DL or two and we could become good VERY quickly.
  105. Bucsfanman Says:
    813- Fair point! We’ve been nut-kicked and duped so many times, it’s like “Stockholm Syndrome” for Bucs fans!
    That said, I have way more faith with this guy than I did with the Koetter regime. Time will tell.
  106. Nole4JabooANDdBucs Says:
    Stockholm Syndrome…indeed!
  107. T REX Says:
    Maybe he can double his playoff win total to two.
