Jameis’ “Perfect Coach”

January 10th, 2019

Bucs GM Jason Licht shares a laugh with new Bucs coach Bruce Arians yesterday at One Buc Palace. (Photo courtesy of Buccaneers.com.)

Although his site leans a little too stat-geekish for Joe, the work of football mathematician Chase Stuart of FootballPerspective.com has always been impressive.

After the 2017 season, Stuart used all sorts of stats and graphics to show that in the final month of the season, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, was one of the better quarterbacks in the NFL. Stuart wrote similar things at the end of this season and added he wasn’t overly impressed with former Bucs coach Dirk Koetter.

After Koetter was relieved of his duties, Stuart wrote, Jameis and the Bucs were one good coach away from the playoffs.

Well now, with the hiring of Bucco Bruce Arians, Stuart not only believes the Bucs got a good coach, but that Arians is the “perfect coach” for Jameis.

The big question, though, is can Winston keep being one of the game’s best players at picking up huge chunks of yards while limiting his turnovers? Well, his 2019 is off to a good start, as he just found his perfect coach: Bruce Arians has come out of retirement to coach the Bucs. It is telling that Arians only was willing to re-enter the NFL to coach the Browns and Baker Mayfield or Tampa Bay and Winston. And that is not too surprising, at least not to me: Winston is, in my opinion, capable of becoming the next Carson Palmer and playing at an All-Pro level under the right coach. And I am sure that Arians seems a lot in Winston that he saw in Palmer, particularly when it comes to the vertical passing game.

If you click on the link above, Stuart has all sorts of graphs and stats and a chart to demonstrate how Arians’ offense and Jameis’ gunslinging ways are a marriage made in NFL heaven.

How geeked is Stuart? He’s already predicting the Bucs play meaningful January games a year from now.

Love the hire. No more selfish players around these parts. Probably more accountability already than there was under klueless n bucco bruce might not even have sat at his desk yet. Welcome Bruce!!

  5. Buc believer Says:

Man I can’t WAIT for the season to start!!! GO BUCS!!!

  6. Buc50 Says:

No Kangols available in the Buccaneer Store unfortunately. 🙁

  7. Bird Says:

I have felt Jameis has been average /middle of the road to this point. And You see flashes from time to time of why he was the #1 pick. That’s just my opinion. He gets judged the same like everyone else. No excuses for one player , especially the most important player on the field.

However, I think this is the perfect hire for Jameis. No question he will get the best out of him. And Jameis will have more trust in head coach. (Was hoping arians would call plays but it sounds like Leftwich but that’s for another day ?)

Excited to see what that entails in his Fifth year option as big decision /potential big contract coming up.

  8. Bucsfanman Says:

    Lets do this thing coach!
You’re going to have to convince us long-time fans though. Talk is cheap in these here parts.
    Go Bucs!

Oh Boy!….it is going to be a long off season….lets see how the roster is rebuilt…too bad the Players Union negotiated so little off season practice…although I think new coaches get a little extra

  12. Defense Rules Says:

@Bucsfanman … “You’re going to have to convince us long-time fans though. Talk is cheap in these here parts.” I agree totally Bucsfanman, but at least now there’s … HOPE. Just watch … BA’s gonna remake this team on BOTH sides of the ball, and Lapdog’s gonna give him whatever he asks for. Predict we’ll see a LOT of FA activity here in Tampa over the next couple of months, and that the draft will be used to fill whatever holes we weren’t able to fill in FA. This is gonna be exciting to watch. Bucco Bruce is in charge now. Buckle up!

Welcome Bucco Bruce!!! Draft olinemen – J Williams at #5 – and that will help Shamis the most!!! Now lets get to work!!!

  16. Tampabaybucfan Says:

If you could have given Jameis the coach of his choice it would have been Arians.

  17. RustyRhinos Says:

If coach Arians and Jameis Winston are such good friends on and off the field why didn’t Mr. Winston give his good buddy a call when he was in AZ instead of getting a uber?

  18. Dewey Selmon Says:

Rusty, BA wasn’t ready to leave the party yet, he closed that beotch down.

  19. Buc50 Says:

Lot of salt in this thread…get over it guys. Jameis is here to show what he can do.

  20. cw_buc_crazy Says:

Boy o boy, I hope I’m wrong, but this is a very bad hiring. There is nothing left to this guy, he barely can walk.It remind me the last concert of Kenny Rogers in St Pete, he want it to satisfied the fans, but his voice was gone.
Most of you guys here are excited for JW, not for Bucs. The success of the JW is before the success of Bucs for you. Kind of Joejaimesfan club.
4 years… he is not going to last not even 4 months/one season. There is no fuel left in this guy, period. Instead Bucs is going to be on hands of Todd Bowles and Byron Leftwich and the rest of his fired(or as he put it “available”) staff.
Was hoping for a new/fresh start, this is not fresh nor new.

  21. cw_buc_crazy Says:

Jason Licht with this hiring will go down as the worst GM ever in Bucs history.
This completes and close all bad decisions he had made.Sad.

  22. pelbuc Says:

Despite an incompetent GM, this could turn out to be a turning point in this franchise. I’ve always admired BA and believe he’s the best coach the Bucs could ha.ve hired. Well done Glazers. Hope has been restored to the fan base.

  23. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

I really hope that BA has complete control of personnel decisions going forward because licht is a dunderbox and has been since day 1. Jury is still out on jameis and this will be the QB whisperer’s ultimate task if he can bring jameis up from 20th best qb to top 12 in the league or at least a playoff qb that wins games when it matters. Love the Bowels hire but that defense is teribble and needs around 7 NFL caliber players to compete against the saints, falcons, and panthers, but time will tell, the bucs have won the past 3 offseasons and are averaging 6 wins when it counts

  24. tmaxcon Says:

Arians is laughing now but will be crying his eyes out after watching film of the pathetic oline including the very average marpet. Then the poor old dude gets to watch tape of the crying clown taking plays off, crying, pouting and giving up the booty against the run… if arians has any hope for any success cancer93 and the co chairman of losing culture dotson better be shown the door asap.

I hope his new nickname brings about a costume change. That alone would make him worth having!

  30. tmaxcon Says:

I am not pissed about hire. actually like the old guy but some of the assistant coaching hires are a little concerning…

bottom line for nearly 2 decades no head coach / front office combination has been able to overcome the Glazers and lead the team to success. you can change everything you want but if the owners are running a daycare center which results and actions prove they have there is no hope no matter who you put on the sideline. the losing culture much change before anyone can have success.

  31. BringBucsBack Says:

Now coach, perhaps you can send Licht clothes shopping DURING the draft!

  35. Erik w/ Clean Athletics Says:

No disrespect to Koetter, but we just Leveled-up BIGTIME.

POST THAT BEAR BRYANT PIC AND LET’S HOPE IT NEVER COMES DOWN.

  36. T REX Says:

Bruce Arians has always called his own plays. It is who he is and what made him a great hire. And now we get Byron Wind Up Leftwich? I guess Winston will learn to improve on his own wind up. LOL. Disappointed.

  37. Bucsace Says:

Sink or Swim time for Jameis……he’s nowhere near the level of Arians last QB at Arizona Carson Palmer…..I just don’t see Arians as that patient a guy…….Bruce is from NJ not Idaho like Dirk

Defense Rules- This is the most hopeful I’ve been since Chucky. I am an Arians fan and truly think that he can turn this thing around.

  44. Buc4evr Says:

Not a huge fan of Arians, but will give him a chance. Hope he can get Jameis under control, fix the defense and rebuild the o-line.

  45. TOM Says:

Great hire. Couldn’t have done better. Not so sure about some of the coaches. Bowles should be good, but Leftwich as OC, I don’t know. I guess time will tell.

Bucs fans, us, cursed/doomed forever……look at Denver, Green bay, and you understand why they successes happen so often….. actually happen once here too, when old Glazer brought the youngest HC at the time, Gruden.

When Winston came off the bench he was being judged on his last 6 games by a lot of fans.

It was nice to see him protection t the football better. It didn’t look natural but I think it showed that his is capable of being molded and being able to make changes in his game.

But there is bad news. Ultimately Winston can only be judged on one thing and you know what that one thing is………I wanted 6-4. Nothing less. 3-3 would be a failure.

Winston disappointed with a pitiful 2-4 finish.

Don’t care what the stats say and I wouldn’t care if he looked like a Trainwreck and squeked out four wins…….Bottom line IMO is that he wasn’t good enough. He needs to get better

    GO BUCS!
