Improvement

Prediction.

The Bucs spent two of their three second-round picks in last spring’s draft on corners.

One was slotted as a nickel, M.J. Stewart. Man, the Bucs are stockpiled with nickel corners.

The first of the three second-round picks was for a guy, Ronald Jones, who if you didn’t know better, you would think he was off the team. Unless something drastic happens, this guy’s picture is next to the word “Bust” in Merriam-Webster’s dictionary.

The last of the second round picks, Carlton Davis, actually might be OK if not good. And Luke Easterling of USA Today thinks Davis will shine under new Bucs defensive coordinator Todd Bowles.

And while [Davis] showed flashes of brilliance in his rookie season, Tampa Bay’s defensive scheme kept him from maximizing his strengths. In Todd Bowles’ defense, Davis will be playing way more press-man coverage, allowing him to use his size, length and physicality to shut down opposing pass-catchers. Davis was forced to be too passive under Mike Smith and Mark Duffner, and the change in scheme should allow Davis to take his game to the next level.

Joe sure hopes so because the Bucs have spent a whole lot of draft capital on corners in the past few years and haven’t gotten much to show for it. Hopefully, Vernon Hargreaves can come back healthy and take the opposite side of Davis.

And if Hargreaves can’t hack it, or the new coaches are scared of Hargreaves’ durability, then go out and buy a corner. Remember, Hargreaves has started only eight games in the past two seasons.

Many want us to draft Greedy…..but I think we can get a very good experienced corner in FA….there will be many choices.

Instead, we should use the draft pick on a DE or Oline or trade down.

  2. Dewey Selmon Says:

Now that BA will be making the picks I’m not so concerned about drafting. We ended up with a president of football operations, GM and head coach all in one.

  3. Kobe Faker Says:

“WHERE O WHERE IS OUR BUCCANEERS MARCUS LATTIMORE?

shut down corner and playing man against the top reciever where ever he goes

Gump gave us VH3, ryan smith, 5’5 javeon, 40 year old mikos boytoy, last years 2- 4.7 forty slowpokes…

Wiff city and have to spend valuable draft capital to get the cornerback

We spend 2 second round picks last year and now have to spend our #5 pick to get greedy williams? Year after year trying to plug a position but keep wiffing

This is how to build a playoff roster? No, this is why we are bottom dwellers and talking draft in december”

  4. DooshLaRue Says:

    Agree with your assessment Dewey.

  5. Jonzey Says:

We need to get Greedy Williams he will win defensive rookie of the year like James did and we passed on him

  6. Buc50 Says:

Free Agency comes first. Once we sign those players, then we can figure out who we draft. Right now, we are all guessing without knowing which veterans will be on the roster. Talk about cart before the horse.

  7. AlteredEgo Says:

Greedy is not the best CB in the draft this year….

  8. AlteredEgo Says:

Lattimore…didn’t Fitz and DJax torch him ?

  9. Not there yet Says:

Lattimore……Fitz , DJax and Mike Evans torched him

    I completely agree Tampabaybucfan.

  11. Nick2 Says:

If Hargreaves can stay healthy that was his coverage too “press man corner”
not the passive 20 yards back Mike Smith coverage we have played since Hargreaves joined the Bucs.

  12. 813bucboi Says:

davis and VHG will benefit from a change of scheme…both excel at man press and thats what they’ll be playing….

no need to get greedy at #5….adding ed oliver or quentin williams will help the DB’s….

Anyone notice how quickly and intelligently patriots defense copied what ravens defense did to slow down the charger offense?

Would be nice if Tampa EVER had a coaching staff that could adapt and morph their scheme to whatever works

  16. tmaxcon Says:

counting on VH3 Bust is like counting on that other useless local bum Murphy to stay healthy for 20 minutes a year.

  17. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Dewey right on and if you think that VH3 is that up in your face man corner, you are mistaken. As a gator alum and watching him play in gville and then in tampa he is what he is an average corner maybe a 2nd-3rd corner that is it….he will get eaten up by Julio and Michael Thomas and he was drafted to cover those guys. Again licht is a poor gm and personnel guy but with BA and Bowels doing the shopping my feelings on personnel go from 0 faith to 10-20% faith time will tell

  18. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Lol, can someone please give me one good reason “WHY” Greedy Williams is so great.

IMO he’s the most overhyped corner since …well…Morris Claiborne.

  19. Easy Says:

CDIII paired with Greedy would be a hellacious duo! Perfect fit for Bowles scheme.

  20. Cb13 Says:

    Jonah Williams!!! Jonah Williams!!!
We need a OT. Greedy is good but we need a OT

  21. tmaxcon Says:

if vh3BUST has any roll other than washing skivvies and towels for this team you can just go ahead and pencil in another basement title. it really is that simple a short, slow and dumb corner with 7th round talent and crap for brains is not worth another minute of bucs time.

VH3BUST was burnt so much transition to a professional Skivey SKID MARK Technician should be easy.

  22. LUVMYBUCS Says:

So many comparisons between the (2012) & (2019) draft.

    Morris Claiborne vs. Greedy Williams
    Fletcher Cox vs. Jeffery Simmons
    Russell Wilson vs. Kyler Murray
    Nick Foles vs. Ryan Finely

    i disagree….

ive watch VHG play in HS and at UF and man press is what he excels at…..name a CB that JJ and MT wont “eat up”….lol….VHG has some of the best technique that scouts have seen in a while….his technique and ball skills are what made him a 1st round pick……smittys outdated passive scheme and lack of coaching has made VHG and others look horrible and has caused them to regress…..

he’ll finally receive NFL level coaching like some many others on the team and he’ll start producing like a 1st round pick….

  27. SchwiftyBuc Says:

    @813

Damn your boy Chris Reeshard sure had his hands full vs the Rams. 230 yards rushing? Guess he shoulda been more energetic or maybe shoulda screaming louder and jumped up and down higher?

  28. SchwiftyBuc Says:

And I’m pretty sure there’s a couple huge differences between Morris Claiborne and Andraez “Greedy” Williams. Starting with the fact that Mo is 5’11 and Greedy is damn near 6’3.

Not saying he’s the pick by any means, right now I’d more than likely take Clelin Ferrel or Jonah Williams over him and try to sign a Vet or trade for Peterson…

But I think you are not giving Williams enough credit for his talent skill set. I mean he did have 6 picks as a true freshmen in the SEC. That doesn’t just happen, someone had to get those picks. Granted as a SO his pick total dropped to 2, but that probably has something to do with him being an established player and being targeted less.

I think we could do a whole lot worse, especially if he manages to run somewhere in the low 4.4’s and test well/ shows agility and fluid change of direction in the 3 cone and W drills.

  29. tmaxcon Says:

    813

don’t give up on reeshard he will be a star and SchwfitlyBuc will be eating is words. now onto that useless bust. vh3 is a lost cause move on sir.

  30. 813bucboi Says:

    LUV

    i agree….

as a gator and SEC fan ive watch plenty of games of his…..the kid has talent no doubt….no doubt he’s a 1st round pick….but not at #5….maybe top 15…..

imo, folks are stuck on his size which is impressive but not sorely the reason why he should be taken #5…..

but i dont think he’s as bad as MC either lol….i think his game is similar to xavier rhodes…..and he was taken at #25….

@ #5 it has to be ed oliver or quentin williams….

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!!

  31. SchwiftyBuc Says:

If Greedy is as good as Xavier Rhodes, WE BETTER DRAFT HIM! Rhodes was flat out one of the best corners in football in 2017. He was clearly a steal for the Vikings and should have been drafted a lot higher. Granted he wasn’t nearly as dominant this year, but it seemed as though the entire vikings defense took a step back this year but that’s beside the point.

Again, there’s a lot of info we don’t have yet. If Greedy comes out and runs a 4.54 40 then I don’t want him on the team. We have enough corners without good top end speed. If Jonah Williams tests through the roof or Clelin Ferrel comes out and test’s like Bradley Chubb did last season or even just keeps pace with Nick Bosa then i’ll take either one of them.

Basically what i’m saying is right now is that it’s too early to definitively say who we absolutely do and don’t want based purely on talent.

  32. SchwiftyBuc Says:

LOL I don’t need no damn Safe space. But seems to me like Reeshard aint done a damn thing apart from generated a bunch of hype since he was separated from Dan Quinn’s hip.

  33. 813bucboi Says:

    schwifty

dont tell me your dumb enough to try to pin that lost on the defense…..kris can lead his horses to water but he cant make them drink…..

he’s the passing game coordinator remember…..tell me how many TD’s goff threw…..you just saw the reason why rod may have coached his last game in dallas…..

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!!

  34. SchwiftyBuc Says:

Bruh they gave up 230 yards on the ground! The defense got eaten alive! And don’t give me that “he’s just the passing game coord.” crap either bro. He’s calling the plays right? That’s why he so hyped up right? So he get’s 100% of the credit and 0% of the blame in your eyes?

Wake up and smell the bias.

  35. mike10 Says:

I remember saying the same thing about VH3 and utilizing his press coverage skills going into 2018, let’s just hope Bowles actually does it!

Also, a note on Licht… how the hell does this man still have a job?

  36. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Schwifty & 813

No doubt the young man has talent.
But the SEC’s a historically has been a ground & pound conference.
If your corner in the SEC your typically not facing an elite passer or passing attack.
Most of the QB’s you face are glorified running backs – with a penchant for ill-advised throws. So racking up picks – give me no reason to pause.

The thing I’m looking at is when he does face an NFL caliber QB or WR how does he respond. I see poor press techniques in and out of breaks and not enough consistency after a lackluster performance.

Correctable yes – Top 15 no.

  37. 813bucboi Says:

    tmax

lol…not giving up…he’ll be a great HC for a long time…i just hope it aint in our division….

    schwifty

rhodes couldve went higher but not at #5….lol….im not saying dont draft greedy at all, im saying dont draft him at #5 especially if ed oliver or quentin williams is on the board….and if they are gone, trade down…..

    CB’s taken at #5 are pat p and ramsey type CB’s….is greedy that?….hell nawl….

funny i didnt here you say a damn thing about the first playoff game….you act like every coach is perfect…..the defense had a bad game at the wrong time…simple as that….so 1 off game erases years of an impressive resume…..GTFOH!!!!!!

its called facts not hype…..kris is a great coach and will be a great HC in this league for a long time…..those are facts not hype….

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!!

  41. SchwiftyBuc Says:

From what I’ve seen on tape #23 doesn’t appear to be slow at all to me in the film I’ve seen. I understand that there are corners like Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib and Josh Norman who do just fine with 4.5 speed. but 40 speed does at least provide a gauge in addition to what we see on tape.

And yes, Greedy is by far from a perfect technician if he were he’d be a surefire top 5 pick, that’s why I’m not saying we should absolutely draft him yet.

But with Corner being as big a need as it is in my eyes, if he shows up to the combine and has off the charts athleticism in the drills that count for corners, with his frame and ability to get his hands on the football, there’s absolutely an argument to be made that he’s worth the pick. That’s all i’m saying.

  43. SchwiftyBuc Says:

By the way it’s Quinnen Williams not Quentin. #SpellCheck

He’s a great prospect too, could make a great replacement for McCoy. Oliver is too small to be worth the #5 pick though.

Oh btw, the Seahawks nearly beat the Cowboys, they lost by 2 points, and they had JR Sweezy as their starting LG.

    Draft Greedy
    Sign the Honey Badger
    Our Defensive backfield is set
2nd round – Best RG/T or penetrating DT (like Gerald Willis)
    3rd round – repeat 2nd round
4th round – Speed, Speed, Speed (just not Dexter Jackson)
    5th round – QB
    7th round – offensive line

ok spellcheck police….looks like your good at 1 thing in life….

folks said aaron donald was too small as well….his prodcution sure says #5 pick….

and why bring up a near victory….lol….almost doesnt count….lol…

look up his resume, those are real facts…..

  46. Kgh4life Says:

I wouldn’t draft a CB with the 5th pick, Greedy is talented, however, the Bucs
secondary would be very inexperienced, I’d rather get a veteran CB in free agency and darft takle with the 5th pick.

  47. SchwiftyBuc Says:

Ed Oliver don’t have the same production that Donald did at Pitt. We’ve been over this. He’s not Donald and never will be.

Face it man, Reeshard hasn’t done Dooky without Dan Quinn attached to his hip but create a whole lot of hype. And you’ve gone and bought into it. Watch, if the Cowboys make him their head coach next season they’ll underachieve.

  48. 813bucboi Says:

    wifty

i wasnt comparing their production…..i said he has #5 production…..picking him at #5 would not be a reach based on production and skills….folks said there will never be another warren sapp….well donald is pretty damn close…..

and richard had the #1 and #4(2015&2016) defense without dan quinn….had a great defense this year….that just goes to show you dont know jack about him or football period…..

cowboys make him HC they make the SB…..simple as that…..jason garrett has been underachieving for years…..

  49. AlteredEgo Says:

    Greedy has flaws….

  50. catcard202 Says:

Both Davis & Stewart were very good press-man corners in college….I never bought into DC Smith’s “We’ll coach them up to play Off-Zone”, instead of just playing to players strengths from the beginning…(Grimes comments last week just further confirms why every BUC CB looked like square pegs being beaten into round holes!)

  51. SchwiftyBuc Says:

Lol you act like he didn’t do that with the same personnel Dan Quinn help construct when they went to back to back superbowls.

Dallas has great personnel as well, Demarcus Lawrence is a stud and they have one of the best LB corps in the league with Vander Esch and Jaylin Smith. Don’t get me wrong I think that Reeshard is a good Defense coach. Just don’t think he has what it takes right now to lead an entire team.

I just dont think he was at all the right fit for us. We needed someone who has done it his whole career at every level including head coach. And we got that someone with B.A.

  52. SOEbuc Says:

Patrick Peterson is the only big time money player we need to bring in for a trade. Knows Bowels defense very well. VH3 on the outside? I hope you’re joking Joe cus we’ve all seen what a joke that looks like since his rookie year. He looked great in the slot for the short time he played this year. Keep him there. Get Pat Peterson opposite of Davis.

  53. SOEbuc Says:

Excited to see all our young secondary players under a proven DC that worked with Peterson and Mathieu. All have major potential now.

  54. gg720 Says:

Give Jones a legitimate shot at running back and you will see he wasn’t a wasted pick. Every time he touched the ball last season he couldn’t take a freaking step before someone was in his face. Shore up the weak offensive line and Barber and Jones will be all you need at the running back position. Also teach this offense how to use your speed back out of the backfield catching passes like White does for NE. Hopefully this new coaching will learn how to do this.

  55. passthebuc Says:

With the 5th pick, the Bucs acquire the best-left tackle in the draft. If not, JW never has a chance of improving. No trade down here, get the best-left tackle available

  56. Anonymous Says:

Hargreaves will be much better in a press defense, its what he played in college and also what he specifically mentioned is his favorite coverage; Man. Expect him to have a solid year
