“If We Win, I Can Still Eat”

January 11th, 2019

Bucs run game coordinator Harold Goodwin.

Harold Goodwin just wants to win.

The former Arizona offensive coordinator for Bruce Arians was working in college the past year and decided if Arians got back into coaching on the NFL level, Goodwin wanted part of the action.

And if that means he had to take a lesser role than what he had in Arizona under Arians, so be it.

So Goodwin took the title of “running game coordinator/assistant head coach” with the Bucs. Why? Because he wants to win.

Goodwin held his first press conference today at One Buc Palace and explained the reason he is in Tampa is because of Arians.

“When it came down to [Bucs passing game/offensive coordinator] Bryon [Leftwich] and myself, the whole coordinator thing, I called Bryon weeks ago before he decided to get back in and I said, Hey bro, you have it. I don’t coach quarterbacks. I am not a quarterback whisperer.’

“Can I coach football? Yes I can. Very damn well in my opinion. But there is a different dynamic having a quarterback talk to another quarterback.”

Goodwin said he doesn’t care what he has to do or who has what title on the coaching staff. Goodwin wants to win. Period.

“I have no ego,” Goodwin said. “I’m about team. If we win, I will still eat.”

Goodwin also admitted he was speaking in Tampa Bay thanks to the efforts of one man: Arians.

Did DL coach Kacy Rogers decide if he is coming with Bowles to Bucs or the Gaints? Is Buckner still available?

  2. SteveK Says:

Great attitude. I think this guy is going to bring some of that attitude to our offense.

  3. SteveK Says:

Buckner is still under contract. Last I heard, Kacy Rodgers is mulling over the DC job in NYG.

  4. Stanglassman Says:

Goodwin, Rogers, Bowles and Leftwich are all good candidates for the next head coach if BA is successful here and then wants to retire.

  5. SB Says:

Well Mr. Goodwin, that would be all up to you and Bruce Almighty!!

  6. Stanglassman Says:

BA, Bowles, Armstrong and Goodwin are the only coaches signed. They’ve been updating them as soon as they sign their contract at the Bucs site.

  7. AlteredEgo Says:

Am I the only one seeing the next coaching staff, after BA steps into another role with the Bucs in a few years ?

  8. TOM Says:

Also kevin Garver wr Todd McNair RB Nick Capone DB/S have been hired

  9. macabee Says:

To clarify a few things. Kacy Rodgers has not decided even though Wiki is listing him Senior Defensive Staff Position – a position created just to hire him. He is not contending for DC. The Giants DC is James Bettcher who was former DC for guess who? Bruce Arians in Arizona.

If you listened to Harold Goodwins presser, he will have a lot to do with the O-Line. Wiki lists Goodwin as O-Line coach/run game coordinator. I had heard the name Sean Kugler as O-Line coach. Maybe Asst.Line coach, I dunno!

Have I confused you enough. I’m sure the smoke will clear later. lol.

  10. macabee Says:

To add to Tom’s list: Kevin Ross DB/Cornerbacks, Mike Caldwell – Linebackers, and as you know Keith Armstrong – Special Teams. Strength & Conditioning, and Offense and Defense Quality control not named yet.

  11. Stanglassman Says:

Tom- those guys have agreed in principle, Rogers had too. I’m just referring to who have signed their contract. Once they sign they’ll be listed on the Bucs website. I don’t think Buckner is currently employed by the Bucs. Like we all speculated, he may return if Rogers accepts the NYG job.

    Macabee- Thank you

  12. Old School Athlete Says:

I know this is off-topic, but it’s a fun fact. KPNX is reporting that the new Buc Commander will be playing in the Waste Management Phoenix Open Pro-Am in Scottsdale on January 28. Might be fun to watch.

  13. macabee Says:

Hold the presses! This just in! We’re in the age of specialization. Mike Caldwell will coach Inside Linebackers and Larry Foote Will coach Outside Linebackers. Reported by Rick Stroud.

  14. Todd Says:

    @joe

I know you love your pet descriptive phrases. Perhaps you might consider referring to the Arian coaching staff as:

    The Arian Goat Herd!

  15. Todd Says:

Who is the defensive line coach since Buckner is out?

  16. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Todd

Are you sure Buckner is out? I thought they were keeping him…he’s under contract to us next year…in case Rodgers doesn’t work out.

At least that is what some posters are reporting.

  17. macabee Says:

Todd, Buckner is still under contract and would like to be back. However, they have been pursuing Kacy Rodgers, Todd Bowles DC at the Jets. Things are in limbo as Rodgers has an offer from the Giants on the table and as far as has been reported, he hasn’t made up his mind. If he accepts the Giants offer, Buckner could still be in the mix.

One other bit of news. Sean Kugler/Broncos who had accepted the Bucs offer, but not signed to be O-Line coach is not coming. The Bucs have opted to bring in Joe Gilbert/Arizona to be O-Line coach.

Willing to lay cash you are seeing exactly that.

    Succession plan.

Saw the BSPN article where Goodwin says its “impossible” to turn things around in one season. He also said the Glazers really never gave him a chance in his interview in 2016. Doesn’t sound like the mentality of true winner to me. Disappointing this is the type of coach we have now. Koetter was also loyal to his ‘staff’ and look where that got the Bucs. This guy is a loser who makes excuses and blames others. Catch 22 for him: either I’m wrong and he’s right – the Bucs keep losing and he gets fired or I’m right and he’s wrong – either way, he’s a loser.

  20. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

^^ You are labeling a guy as a “loser” that you literally know nothing about? Lol, nice.

  21. Frank Pillow Says:

Goodwin was a little all over the place in his presser and a stark contrast to Bowles with respect to spoken content. That being said, good for him for using the pulpit to offer something other than coach-speak…and to candidly relay his views on a host of interesting and important matters. At the very least, we got a glimpse into his personality/demeanor and he reinforced a few key themes like: loyalty, dedication, effort, accountability and productivity. All in all, it’s nice to see the ‘winds of change’ blowing at OBP.

  22. Easy Says:

Is Warhop still the O-line coach?

  23. Owlykat Says:

Arians impresses me as not only knowing Offense, he knows Defense, OL, and Special Teams, unlike Koetter who only knew Offensive Play Calling (and not as good as his OC) and had no clue about anything else, which was why he just parroted every excuse Warhop told him about the constant poor OL.

  24. macabee Says:

Easy, Warhop is out. Sean Kugler/Broncos who had accepted the Bucs offer, but not signed to be O-Line coach is now not coming. The Bucs have opted to bring in Joe Gilbert/Arizona U. to be O-Line coach.

  25. Owlykat Says:

Therefore, there is no chance Warhop will be retained by Ariens.

  26. mtbucsfan Says:

    But can he eat W’s?

  27. stpetebucsfan Says:

OK small goal to start this journey. Let’s reach the playoffs and I personally will take Goodwin to an “All you can eat” joint of his choice!!!!
