“A Lot Of Momentum”

January 7th, 2019

Bruce Arians.

This morning, NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport gave the “Good Morning, Football” audience an update on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ coaching search.

Rapoport said all signs point to Bruce Arians being the 12th coach in franchise history.

You can watch the full NFL Network report on the Twitter video below.

Of course, Rapoport is assuming there will be contract negotiations.

Joe is confident the Bucs knew exactly what Arians wanted before his interview on Saturday.

hare the guido hat, just hate it……..ughh……….

  2. The Graham Tram Says:

^ hates Winston, hates hats, hate hate hate

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We will certainly get lots of attention with this hire. Plus…..Arizona is one of our home opponents next year……that match-up will be discussed ad nauseam.

  4. 813bucboi Says:

lol…havent begun contract negotiations because their is no contract….lol….

    licht, bruce, todd, and buckner….lol…

licht still hasnt learned his lesson….stop with the quick fixes…..

    Tampa Bay Cardinals…..lol…..

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!…#KRISISTHEPICK!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  5. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    “Tampa Bay Cardinals”

So I suppose if the Buccaneers hired say, Tony Dungy again…you would call them the “Tampa Bay Colts”.

I have no idea if this hire is going to happen…but the media clearly thinks it is going that way.

  6. Pittsshore Says:

Arians will get rid of JW after spending 30 minutes with the degenerate. I only hope the Raiders do not snag Will Grier with the number 4 pick.

  7. Bucsfanman Says:

813- You’re awfully negative toward this hire. I mean “Tampa Bay Cardinals”?! C’mon man. Surely you can acquiesce that Arians is a good coach? Quick fix? I hope so, don’t you?!
And, right now, we’re not 100% that he’s the hire anyway.

  8. Pete I Says:

“Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins, a potential first overall pick, has announced he will enter the 2019 NFL draft.”

    FWIW

  9. Pete I Says:

Hope we don’t regret passing on one of the hot up and coming coaches. A retread with health issues and who walked away? Let’s hope he has some fire left.

And we are the only buyers of this…

  10. SOEbuc Says:

    813bucboi

Kris is not the pick. He needs more experience at a higher position before he becomes a HC. Bottom of the four interviews.

  11. Joe Blahak Says:

these former Cards are free agents too….adrian peterson, tyrann matthieu and larry fitzgerald….hmmm

  12. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Bro just sign the papers and do this Press Conference! I want to see OUR new coach in a pewter Kangol!

  13. Lord Cornelius Says:

Considering Dungy / Gruden only lasted 6/7 years I don’t know if it’s such a bad thing if we could only get 3-4 good years out of this guy where he elevates Winston to another level.

If he can do that – i.e. Winston = top 8 QB then we should sustain success for years regardless of the coach that later comes in. Maybe Bowles learns from the first time around as Arians successor

  14. ChanEpic Says:

If it is Arians/Bowles, as I am reading it IS, I’ll take that but 813BucBoi’s desire for Kris was my 2nd place and wouldn’t be a BAD hire.

  15. GhostofSchiano Says:

    Tampa Bay Cardinals,

Former HC Arians, Former DC Bowles, Former coach Buckner, Former front office Licht…. so YES this will be the Tampa bay Cardinals.

Stay tuned…Carson palmer will be here in some capacity. Write it down, it’s going to happen.

Nothing against Bruce, just wanted to see a younger face (Fresh ideas) leading the Bucs. I see this turning into Lovie 2.0. I hope I am wrong.

  16. SOEbuc Says:

“Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins, a potential first overall pick.”

    Hahahahahaha. Riiiiiiiight.

  17. Deez Bucs Says:

Nice job Joe on scooping everyone on this! Your sources have come through and now everyone is reporting what you already published several days ago. LMAO at Ian Rapoport looking like he’s in the know nationally when you have been in the know locally longer.

  18. VFL98 Says:

I don’t like the hire and have said so many times, but unlike the Winston haters if he becomes the next coach I’m all in till the end.

  19. IsrBuc Says:

I think it’s a fair question to ask, joe, why is he coming back from retirement? What’s his motivation? What you think he thinks he can get done with this team in 1-2 years?

  20. Zam Says:

I’m getting Lovie flashbacks unfortunately. Fool me once…..

  21. Pete I Says:

    @ SOEbuc

I didn’t write I, just cut and pasted it… He certainly will be likely a top 5 pick and someone will want to come up and get him…

  22. GhostofSchiano Says:

    Pete I Says:

Hope we don’t regret passing on one of the hot up and coming coaches. A retread with health issues and who walked away? Let’s hope he has some fire left.

    ————————————————————————————-

You named a few of my biggest concerns with this hiring, now add to that he turns 67 in October and you have to question the brutal schedule these coaches keep, the travel. the wear and tear on the body functioning daily on a few hours of sleep. Hard enough on a 40 something year old but a guy pushing 70? I hope everyone involved has thought this thing through.

  23. TKiv18 Says:

@ Graham Tram, love it. I think Robert and Pete are part of the breakfast club at their local bar. Either that or their wives ran off with a mailman, dudes are miserable.

  24. Rod Munch Says:

Thanks, but no thanks Tampa job is just too big, Bill Parcells says…
    Dec 30, 1991

Now we know why so many conflicting reports surfaced in Florida and New Jersey last week. Tampa Bay Buccaneers owner Hugh Culverhouse thought he had wooed a marquee coach. But Bill Parcells, who never signed on the dotted line, decided Tampa Bay was not the place to resurrect his career.

Late Saturday night, Parcells, the 50-year-old former New York Giants coach, stunned Culverhouse, 72, by rejecting a five-year, $6.5-million, 38-point guaranteed offer to assume total control of the Bucs as coach and director of football operations.

    ——-

Parcells’s Latest Twist: He Jilts the Buccaneers Again
    Jan 19, 2002
Bill Parcells stunned the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the rest of the National Football League last night when he decided not to become the team’s head coach. Even by the standards of Parcells’s previous departures and arrivals, this weeklong melodrama stands out.

    ——-

So my apologizes… I was mixing up 1992 with 1996.

When Dungy was the 3rd choice it was behind Jimmy Johnson and Steve Spurrier, not Parcells, which makes sense since it was the coach of the Pats and took them to the SB… Duh.

Anywho, until I see Arians on stage at One Buc Place in a Bucs hat, I’m not getting excited about anything.

  25. SC Bucs Fan Says:

    Bucs fans on this board…

    “Don’t hire him”
    “Don’t draft him”
    “Don’t sign him”

    Offer unrealistic solutions.

Arians seems to have enough respect to get a shot here. Are the players here that can make him appear to be a good coach? Who knows.

  26. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

    IsrBuc

Well, much to the malign of the Jameis-Haters, his motivation seems to be Jameis Winston. He is an outspoken Jameis supporter, and after two down years from Jameis, here comes Arians riding into Tampa on his white horse to save Jameis’ career.

After 4 years of Clueless Lovie and Overwhelmed Dirk, Jameis needs a real Head Coach, and Bruce Arians is exactly that. It just makes sense.

  27. Pete I Says:

I’m not miserable just don’t like Winston’s lack of character, and his play on the field is mostly awful too.

We have wasted 4 years waiting on winston. If Arians can fix that in 1 year…hooray and good luck!

    I have doubts…

  28. stpetebucsfan Says:

So I’ve been reading the NFL mock draft sites and scouting.

A number of posters here have claimed they want us to draft Greedy Williams. They are winning me over.

The sites have us picking either the tackle from Alabama or the tackle from Florida. Both are great OL and if we take one I won’t be upset. From scouting it appears that the Bama player is more finished and ready to go while the Gator has more natural talent.

But Greedy is special and would fit our division very well. Fills a HUGE need in our defensive backfield…and the more I read about this kid the more I like him.

He’s cocky as all get out…roughs guys up and plays physical shut down defense…at 6-3 he’s tall enough…need to flesh out a bit though. He’s know for ragging and intimidating WR’s…nasty ‘tude…but after the games he goes up to them and congratulates them and wishes them the best of luck.

Is is possible? The Bucs could find a badarrse on the field who is actually very classy when they’re not playing?

Off the field he’s a quiet dude who goes home at night to his GF and their one year old daughter who picks their TV viewing for the rest of the evening. Greedy boasts of actually being a nice guy with good values.

I’m not miserable just don’t like Winston’s lack of character, and his play on the field is mostly awful too.

I think most people get the distaste for his off the field (lack of) candor, but the rest of your take is certified fruitcake nutso, crazy talk. He is the best QB we’ve ever had and not mostly awful, I would say he is mostly GOOD, sometimes GREAT and others times not so great.

  30. Locked In Says:

why do I get a feeling we’ll be ‘left at the alter’? I hope I’m wrong.
“Arians to stay retired, Bucs name Hugh Jackson head coach…”

  31. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    IsrBuc Says
“I think it’s a fair question to ask, joe, why is he coming back from retirement?”

His health is improved. He had a fight with cancer for over a year before it went into remission. Then he went in the booth and eased his way back into the football mindset.

Why is he choosing the Buccaneers? (which you didn’t ask)

Because he see’s a team that, contrary to what the fans believe, is on the cusp of greatness…a team that is set to go from crappy to a Superbowl contender in a year’s time. (and by a year, I mean by the 2020 season…gotta give 2019 rookies developmental time)

  32. Robert Says:

    friggin hate the name graham

    love me some grams though!

  33. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Pete I Says
“I’m not miserable just don’t like Winston’s lack of character…”

    Well, let’s be realistic here.

The college rape accusations never were proven…and they were more than half a decade ago.

The Uber thing, also never proven (all that was proven was that he rode in the car), was three years ago.

Since then, he’s started charities and visited schools, mentoring youth.

Even if the Uber thing actually went down, it has been three years and he has more than proven himself since…off the field.

On the field, he has set multiple team records. His picks were actually comparable to most of the league, but his fumbles combined with them were a major issue. Still, his fumbles were cut in half this year, and he only had 14 picks…4 of which were in that one game.

The fumbles were the fault of the offensive line, which was so bad last year that Winston was hit so much he got injured.

He seems to turn the ball over when the Bucs are badly behind…but isn’t that the time to take chances?

And so far as his deep ball aspect, he has proven to be capable of connecting with everyone he throws deep to except Desean Jackson. Why everyone else? Because Jackson does not make as much effort for Winston. The others do.

One other thing…Koetter began to limit Winston’s mobility from the second year on. Notice he kept him in the pocket more (except when running for his life). This year, he was permitted to be more mobile and suddenly his game improved.

  34. SOEbuc Says:

    Pete I

Did you cut and paste it from one of those mock drafts for next year when this year isn’t over? No way he’s going in the top 5 and there’s no reason for any QB needy team to trade into five to get him. If there’s a QB needy team in the top five, they should trade back to get him or any other QB.

  35. MadMax Says:

Off topic….but the more I watch MLB Devin White, the more I think he should be our 1st pick! We could trade down with the Jags (they want Haskins), then maybe even trade down another spot or two and still get him. Watch how much he rushes the passer in his tape. Can cover sideline to sideline plus pass rush.

Im putting him on the a$$whoop team of draft picks! If Bosa or Williams isnt there…hmm, just think about trading down. Then possibly trade back up at the end of the 1st for Wilkins or Montez Sweat.

We dont know if Kwon or Beckwith will ever be the same after their injuries.

  36. BeeBucs Says:

Man the Bucs fans are so negative…

  37. Pete I Says:

No I cut it from PFT.

And no his character is or was terrible. I imagine he still has those traits, very rarely does a schmuck grow out of it by 24…44, 64? Maybe.

And no he isn’t great he is terribly inconsistent on the field.

  38. View from 132 Says:

Why wasn’t this jerk at the top the comments flagged for calling Arians’ hat a “guido hat” – that’s an ethnic slur, Joe, and you should demand better of your readers. It’s also an ignorant comment – those hats are worn by all sorts of people.

  39. Pete I Says:

And if you don’t think a QB needy team will try to go up to get Haskins before another QB needy team, your nuts.

It always happens that a team becomes in love with a guy like that and fears losing him.

  40. JimmyJack Says:

MadMax….I think the need at LB is more dire then most fans wanna give credit for.

Even when at full health we had a whole bunch of games with some of the most putrid LB play I can recall.

Letting go of Smith made a difference but I still say it’s a need. You can’t put games like Chicago and Pittsburg on film and tell me we are set at LB. I call BS on that

  41. Frank Pillow Says:

Max, I 1000% agree…D. White is the best player in college football. Not the best defensive player- THE BEST PLAYER! I just got back from the Fiesta Bowl and he was all over the field. He’s exactly the kind of rabid dog personality and elite athlete we sorely need on D. He’s a bigger, faster Roquan Smith. STUD.

  42. MadMax Says:

Agreed Jimmy, thanks. We def coould use the kind of mlb White could give us. And if Beckwith comes back strong, then have some depth.

  43. 813bucboi Says:

    bonzai

tony was and will always be a buc…..

and he won a SB as a HC…..

    i sure wouldnt mind that……

and i doubt tony would try to get his old gang back together for 1 more run….you know, his old GM, his old DC, his dline coach…..

we just got finished being the tampa bay falcon- former HC and OC of the falcons…..

now some want to become the tampa bay cardinals…..licht, bruce, buckner, todd….lol….

    Keep it coming !!!!

  50. Mike Says:

I feel like this may fall through- no contract talks yet?
Seems curious for a deal that will supposedly close tomorrow.

If it implodes on Gump, that will be his end.

  51. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

813 I wouldn’t be mad if you were right, in fact I would still be ecstatic.

I think that at this point it’s a foregone conclusion that BA is going to be our coach. What would you think of Richard as DC/ Assistant HC? Basically be the planned heir to BA.

Wouldn’t that be nice? An actual plan in place instead of a patch?

  52. Mike Says:

I agree 100% with Jimmy Jack on our linebackers. People have been raising this group, and anointing them for far too long. Seems delusional to me.

  53. Mike Says:

    *praising

  54. TexBuc Says:

In honor of Bruce Arians we should bring back Bucco Bruce when he gets hired…lol

  55. TexBuc Says:

Hate to say it to all the K. Alexander fans but he has consistently taken bad angles and been out of his gap. We should just run a big nickle as our base defense and play 3 safeties.

  56. Sunday_44 Says:

Watching Kwon try to cover TEs was embarrassing. We need upgrades at LB for sure.

Calling them the best unit in the NFL is malpractice.

Some of the angles he took closing down on the RB looked like he was trying to tackle a 3rd grader.

    Set the EDGE.

    Good God!!!

  57. StoutGospel Says:

    Yes..Yes…Yes

JUST heard through Adam Caplan that Bucs made pointed inquiry to Baltimore today on conditions of obtaining….

    JOHN HARBAUGH!!!

Go Glazers go!! Yes, Yes, Yes

  58. JimmyJack Says:

Sorry 813 a lot of us believe in some of the players we got and believe we can be quickly fixed. Ya know like we see other teams do every year.

Why you want a slow fix bro?

  59. Billybob Says:

Say what you want about JW, he has good points and bad points but if he eats another W on the sideline, I say we give him a one way ticket to the Canadian Football League!

  60. GhostofSchiano Says:

Buccaneer Bonzai Says: Why is he choosing the Buccaneers? (which you didn’t ask)

We are his SECOND choice, remember the Browns was his first choice.

The reason most likely is we have a potent offense, most of his Cardinals Cronies are already in or will be (Buckner, Licht) in place.

Fix the defense, run game and Winston and the sky is the limit.

  61. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @View from 132

Agree with your observation. When I was young we sometimes made fun of those hats.

As I aged and became a Ben Hogan admirer my view changed. When I was young we used to call them “cat hats” because dudes that wore them tended to be cool dudes who played jazz.

I like the hat and think it actually looks good on BA

  62. Pete I Says:

He picked, assuming he did and does, the Bucs because we are the only ones showing any interest in him.

    The only ones…

  63. Wesley Says:

We’re getting a coach the Browns didn’t want.

  64. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Pete, based on what? Information made available to public?
We didn’t even know BA was interviewing here until he did.
Most information and conversations are not made public, so to say something like “we are the only one interested” is extremely ignorant.

  65. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

I don’t think that nobody is interested, I think that this has been a done deal for weeks, so why would Bruce’s agent send him to other interviews when he already has his job?

  66. SchwiftyBuc Says:

    @813BucBoi

Koetter wasn’t a Quick fix he was a gamble. And Arians is twice the Coach that Koetter is.

I understand that you’ve bought into the Chris Reeshard Hype, but that don’t mean you’re right. After all didn’t you want us to draft a Linebacker 1st in 2017?

  67. Wausa Says:

The guy is a winner and I think he will bring a winning culture to the Bucs.
I also think his connection and admiration for Jamies is a huge positive.

  68. Pete I Says:

    @ Bumble snow monster

We are the only buyers of BA. I agree with you that is extremely ignorant of the Bucs…perhaps.

  69. TexBuc Says:

thats exactly what we need…someone to come in and fix the defense in 1 offseason…..

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!…#KRISISTHEPICK!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  72. Crazed Bucs Fan Says:

Man can we just get Dwayne Haskins?! PLEASE!!!!

  73. SchwiftyBuc Says:

Bruce Arians is unquestionably one of the best offensive coaches in the league.

Todd Bowles is unquestionably one of the best defensive coaches in the league.

I simply don’t know how any informed football fan in their right mind could look at the possible addition of those 2 guys to run the 2 most important phases of the game and say “Meh, quick fix. Give me the high energy coordinator with the funny name who has no track record as a head coach.” Cmon bruh. You better HOPE we hire Arians and Bowles.

And if BA can hire the right guy to coordinate Special teams, and we have the right draft/free agency haul where we properly address the O-line & the secondary with the possible addition of Greedy Williams, as well as finish building the Dline with possible addition of Quinell Williams or Clelin Ferrel, we could be a force next season.

  74. 813bucboi Says:

    schwifty

dirk was a gamble but in licht’s eyes he was also a quick fix….he went in house instead of conducting a search….

2017 i wanted a number of players 1st round….i think your referring to MLB jarrad davis….we could definitely use him now….that wouldnt have been a bad pick….

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!…#KRISISTHEPICK!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  77. JimmyJack Says:

813….Yes. Quick fix is the only way in the NFL.

Whoever the coach is the goal will be the same……playoff run next year.

  78. JimmyJack Says:

Unless you want a total rebuild

  79. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

813 man you are setting yourself up for disappointment by narrowing it down to one guy.
I get it man, I think Kris is going to be a hell of a coach but it just isn’t looking like it’s here.
I think the Glazers are afraid of the unknown and why they are scared to hire the up and coming Coordinator.
They want the known commodity, even if he isn’t known for winning championships, he is still known for success mostly wherever he has been.

  80. SchwiftyBuc Says:

Yeah we have seen Arians Act plenty of times before.

    Peyton Mannings first QB coach.

Coached Ben Roethlesberger and the Steelers to 2 Super Bowls and got a ring in the 1st one.

Coached Andrew Luck in his rookie year and led them to the playoffs the year after having the #1 pick of the draft.

Resurrected Carson Palmers career after he looked like he would never be a good player again after several very poor seasons in Oakland.

31-14 his first 3 seasons in AZ, including a 9-1 start in 2014 before both Carson Palmer (6-0 as a starter that year) and Drew Stanton (5-3 as a starter that year) went down to injury.

Went 8-8 in 2017 with NO one at QB. He leaves and the Cardinals absolutely collapse.

Now that seems like an Act to me that I would very much like to see here in Tampa Bay.

  81. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    ^^ No doubt, Schwifty.

Great points and yes he would be a HUGE hire for the Bucs.

  82. Mike Johnson Says:

Done deal. Hope he brings todd Bowles with him. Bowles might not be HC material. But he sures hell can coach Defense.

  83. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Schwifty

Agree completely. And like your reference to Greedy. He could be Arians next Patrick Peterson…a dominant CB in this league is almost as good as having a great QB…true shutdown corners are not that common….I mean once you get past Brent Grimes….OK snark font off.

6-3 still a little light in his 180’s but he’s coming out early he’ll get to 200 in a year or two…and FIERCELY competitive. He’ll look at Antonio Brown not with fear but the motivation to embarrass him….and I’m serious…Greedy doesn’t just want to cover guys he wants to embarrass them and any QB who dares throw his direction.

Greedy would take 1/2 of the db and then if our other DB’s continue to grow we might actually be OK. Mainly having a guy you can use to shut down the other team’s #1 is HUGE. After his experience with Petersen I suspect BA would love to have Greedy.

Arians: “Too much to live for to die on the sideline”
Posted by Darren Urban on January 9, 2018 – 10:16 pm

Bruce Arians was doing the media tour Tuesday, talking with both Rich Eisen and Colin Cowherd a week after retiring and mentioning he’d like to get into the media business. I can’t imagine someone won’t be willing to give him a chance. During his appearance on the “Rich Eisen Show,” Arians talked again about retirement, touching on familiar subjects with some more detail.

    — He admitted his 2016 health scares “were eye opening.” He didn’t want cancer to drive him out of the game, and he was able to return. But there was concern for both himself and his wife, Chris.

“The stress of being a coach’s wife, of watching my health go up and down with wins and losses,” Arians said. “I knew I was done too, I was, ‘Yeah, you’re right, there’s too much to live for to die on the sideline.”

    — He reiterated he knew he was done in the last game in Seattle when Phil Dawson made his field goal and then Blair Walsh missed. But he acknowledged the family had talked about it as far back as the weekend after the Thursday night home loss to Seattle. “My wife, she was done,” Arians said. “God bless her, 47 years in this business is enough.” (Arians had previously written he was considering staying one more year and renting an apartment if his wife went back to their “forever home” in Georgia.)

Bruce Arians battled cancer and won. He has been medically cleared to return to the game. Haters gonna hate.

    Agree with View from 132.

Not only was the remark an ethnic slur, it was erroneous. There’s no room for spewing such garbage on this otherwise excellent sports site.

    Hey Pittsshore?
Arians wouldn’t take the job W OUT JAMEIS DUMMY!! He has known Jameis since Jameis was 12! Jameis will THRIVE playing for Arians! U know HATRED just blinds u, also STUPIDITY is a close second

  89. JIMMY T Says:

    Hey Pete I
Jameis lack of character? I’m not going to rehash but just to be clear it is not illegal to have sex in college! There was NEVER EVER A RAPE, PERIOD! So u can’t EVER BRING THAT UP , u just can’t! Take the time to read the freaking report ok? Look Jameis had the crab legs freebie, & the BB gun shooting signs BUT have u EVER read about Jameis around town partying, boozing, DRUGS? NEVER! In the offseason of his rookie year he took a ride in an uber, had a few drinks & was accuussed of groping. This is NOT like what happened w Ben Rothlesberger, Jameis is not a Lawrence Phillips lunatic, he made a mistake. He certainly did not force himself on this person So to try to assasinate someone’s character for NO REASON IS WRONG! Now if Jameis was always in trouble in Tampa, ALWAYS out on the town, multiple police altercations or other woman issues than yes I would agree but THERE IS NOTHING THERE! Immature college pranks does not equate to being labeled as a bad person! So ENOUGH, we get it, u don’t like Jameis. He just turned 25, has been with his soon to be wife since high school and they just had a baby boy! Let’s FOR ONCE give him a chance. Arians will make him a great QB and he will turn this franchise around
