Jameis channels David Lee Roth.

If Joe didn’t know it Sunday afternoon when America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, was standing at a podium in Jerry’s World giving his postgame remarks, Joe could have sworn Jameis was doing a David Lee Roth.

Yes, the singer for Van Halen is many things. Part-comedian, part-dancer, part-showman and 110 percent rocker. He’s the ultimate frontman and was/is the perfect ying to the yang of reclusive genius guitarist Eddie Van Halen.

(Berating a clown from New Jersey throwing beer on him in the middle of a Van Halen set was classic Roth.)

Roth is known for his crazy lyrics. Can’t get a medic on a subway line… We’re getting funny in the back of my car, sorry honey if I took you just a little too far…

Joe could go on and. Roth is simply a trip. But one of his wild lyrics came in the song “Hot For Teacher.” In the song’s video, Roth is seen holding up an hourglass and saying, “I think the clock is slow.”

Joe was reminded of this when Jameis tried to explain his delay of game penalties Sunday, including when the Bucs had a fourth-and-one on the Cowboys-2.

“I don’t know what it was,” Jameis said of the delay call. “I just thought it was quick. We got ourselves with 25 and 15; I just thought it was quick. Obviously, I have to be aware of that. I wish I had that one back.”

The clock was quick?

If Roth ever hears that line, he might just use it in a song.

Simply put, Jameis has to be more aware of the clock. This is fundamental football. Geez, where have you gone Josh Freeman?

(Some “Hot For Teacher” trivia: The blonde in the video was a Miss Canada runner-up. Yes, the Van Halen quartet’s good tastes extended past the realm of music to include Budweiser, Jack Daniels and the finer things in life.)

    Jamies football IQ is embarrassing

  2. Zwak Says:

Dirks comments on Griffin in his presser were as bizarre! Something in Dallas just wasn’t in sync, as Tony Dungy used to say..

  3. bucsince79 aka Bumaneer Says:

Roth sucks!! he lost his voice 25 years ago… Van Halen W Roth was the worst concert i have ever seen. The most over rated band…

  4. Larry Says:

The Bucs need a new start!!! That clock management was a mess. Pop Warner stuff.

  5. Bculaw Says:

Where did it come from?? Winston has had his struggles, but delay of game penalties has never been an issue. For him to have 3 in one game tells me something strange was happening. Not sure if he got flustered, or if he was expecting the sideline to save him, or if the defense confused him, but it was an odd ruen of events.

  6. Nprbuc Says:

A little off topic but still in Bucs QB world- Koetters quote in the TBTimes today says it all. Topic Ryan Griffin. “ Tears it up in practice every day., but he has never had the chance to prove it in a real game.We would like to see R.G.get a chance to get into a game if the opportunity presents itself.” What? I’m pretty sure he is the COACH isn’t he. Out of the past 15 games, just this year, ya don’t think there was one time that it would have been nice to see the QB that tears it up in practice every day? The guy that posted a 105.3 qbrating in 4 preseason games with a 68% completion rate. Dirk is going to see if an opportunity presents itself? Give me a break. You are the damn Coach. YOU make the decisions who suits up and who plays. YOU are the guy who has been forcing the kid to ride the pine for3 years when you say he is “tearing it up in practice”. Wonder who is at fault for the kid getting zero opportunities when you already know for sure what Fitz brings to the team. Now we get a Possibly/ maybe comment one game before the kid becomes a free agent? One of the many reasons that Dirk must go. Hope the kid gets picked up in FA and takes his team to the Super Bowl. Awful to treat a player like that when he has done everything asked of him. He deserves a real chance, someplace.

I’ll accept a quick clock excuse once but not 3 times in different crucial situations.

  8. Miguel Grande Says:

I saw the Rolling Stones live with a little known opening band called Van Halen.

David Lee Roth blew Jagger off the stage. They were fantastic.

I recently saw a video with Roth on Joe Rogan and was very surprised that he was not the jerk that he plays on the stage.

At the end of that video it says that Michael Anthony currently lives in Tokyo, Japan and studies with Sumo wrestlers.

Ironically, it’s Roth that lives in Tokyo and studies martial arts with the world’s most famous Sumo Wrestler.

    Waldo became Bucsince79 aka Bumaneer.

Weren’t we all told how high Winston’s football IQ was during the combine? The guy at times play like a complete imbecile. You can’t coach up a guy intellect. Punt on Koetter, Winston, Licht and whatever the defensive body of the week is. Shake up the etch a sketch.

Last game for Koetter and Crew…..high draft spot on the line for the next regime. Chatter up here in the ATL is he will come back as OC after Sark gets canned.

I think I am the only one that has mentioned Raheem for new HC. Has coached both sides of the ball for a very long time. And even though it was a very long time ago, he was the last coach to get us to the playoffs.

    -Rivera
    -Richard
    -Raheem

  13. Pistol Pete Says:

Rah was 17-31 as a HC with us….I like the guy but not enough to try a re-tread.
I like Chris Petersen at Washington, 139-32 all time coaching record. He might be a blast as a HC in the NFL.

four fricking years????? you better know better by now. ( QUARTERBACK AND COACH) this guy is an average, if not second or third string quarteback. we made another mistake, own up to it..not saying we picked the wrong quarterback, just the quarterback position that year we picked, was aparently not the correct position/pick. wouldnt have mattered if we picked the other one. stop blamming everything, and everybody else and realize that we do not have the player we all hoped for … I have.
coaching only gets noticed if you have the right players to run what you are trying to do. we need to get someone that can evaluate talent better than what we have been doing. not just the general manager… scouts are not doing their job in my opinion. (and yes -they do keep scouts when the manager is changed.)
and I am hoping that we get to building what we want. a respectable team. -you cant win the super bowl without that, a little luck helps but -if you dont have a half way decent team…..

  15. BrianBucs Says:

The PR on Winston is that he has this high football IQ. However, on the field we never see it. At All.

  16. Joe Blahak Says:

    WinSTUNNED!

  17. AZBucsFan4Lyfe Says:

What a waste of time…..Plenty of Coaches catch the delay of game. The Coach didn’t care. So why should anyone else care. Oh yea, because of the need to make a moot point……lol

  18. Thisisagarbageblog Says:

Joe, do not write every thought.

  19. old fart buc fan Says:

go ahead blame the coach no.. its the quarteback… uh seems to me its BOTH. its everybody….

  20. old fart buc fan Says:

sign of a bad team.. cant make plays, drop passes in most important times, make bad calls, cant stop the opposition when its needed, penaltys,,, what more needs to be said??? BAD TEAM!! stop blsmming phases….go ahead prove 0me wrong!!!

  21. Mike Says:

Perhaps the clock was fast? It’s not humanly inconceivable…
Who runs the stadium clock? A Dallas homer? Good trick!!!

  22. old fart buc fan Says:

    Blamming sorry..

  23. Mike Says:

Some thing might be fishy- NFL wants Dallas to clinch

    Conspiracy time

I call for an investigation of how the clock was run while we were on offense

  24. NPRSageBoy Says:

Listen to Ian Beckles podcast. He rips JayMiss for his lack of football IQ.

  25. Jean Lafitte Says:

I bet at Koetter’s new gig he brings Griffin with him.

  26. Jameis Almighty! Says:

Hometown cooking with the playclock. Cheating at it finest by the clock operator. Refs should’ve reset it. Dirk should’ve been all over the crooked refs after calling a timeout. Can Koetter Fireeeeee Licht!

  27. dylan160w Says:

David Lee Roth? shows the age of the Joe’s writing this. Outdated references

  28. Mort Says:

Since when does Budweiser equal “Good taste”?

  29. C. Alaka Says:

Joe, Merry Christmas 1st off. Very much appreciate what you do for us poor Bucs fans.

Now back to business! I can’t remember Jameis EVER making this mistake within his 4 yr career. He was even laughable when Aikman made a joke about it (I can tell he’s not a Jameis fan).

I heard this Jameis narrative, but which QB outside of the top 3 in football are gonna win w/ a defense giving up 30-35 per game & no rushing game for basically 3 yrs. NO QB IS WINNING CONSISTENTLY W/ THOSE ODDS.

  30. Rob Says:

Diamond Dave was awesome in his prime. Please don’t compare a legend to the human ATM (America’s turnover machine). Former one time pro bowler quarterbacks should know just a little about clock management. That is his job, right? What a joke he is. Draft the best qb available and let’s move on with a new coach and possible new gm. This $hit show needs to be over NOW. Go Bucs!

    Dear C. Alaka,

This is Mike Glennon, my first time on NoBucsFan.com but I have a question for you…. did you defend me this way in 2013 and 2014 when I didn’t have a defense, nor did I have a consistent running game or an offensive line. Were you defending my rights to remain starting QB then? Thanks, I’ll hang up and listen.

“I think I am the only one that has mentioned Raheem for new HC. ”

There isn’t much that could make me completely lose faith in this team. Hiring Raheem as head coach would probably do it.

If this team had a schedule like he had that year, we’d have been undefeated. It was our first easy schedule for twenty years, and our last one since.

People seem to forget it was Raheem that brought back the losing culture after Dungy and Gruden had turned the franchise around. The lack of discipline under Raheem made players weak, lazy and uncaring.

Schiano was strict…and I think he would have made a bigger difference if not for the media and MRSA.

Lovie blew it. No doubt. But Jason Licht was just as resonsible back then.

Dirk is the better of the four, even if the wins don’t show it.

Same issue as last year. Kicking and defense. But…at least the defense had a decent draft and the rookies are developing now. Another defensive draft and a little developmental time and this team should be set.

Unless the new coach completely destroys our top offense.

  34. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    @MHBuc25

Seems to me there was this little thing called the Mike Glennon mob, so there were some who did defend him.

Not me. I saw a player who remained stagnant in his development and thatvproved to be the case when he left Tampa.

  35. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Things I look for in a backup QB:

    – Can win games in the short term. A must.
    – Have the potential to gain trade value if forced to start.
    – Have the potential to completely outplay the starter, like Brady did Bledsoe

If the backup cannot do at least 1-2 of those things, I don’t want him.

Mike Glennon did none. Ryan Griffin has zero track record thus far, and he’s nearing thirty.

  36. Selmon’s Rib Says:

Best thing about this game? I was watching with a buddy who’s a Cowboys fan. I told him Jameis was going to get another delay of game. I looked really smart.

  37. Jason S. Mclaurin Says:

I can’t say enough about that play. I was watching the game at a bar and the entire bar said it was on the coach and he should be fired. Yet that play still is coming back to Winston because Koetter is under huge heat. If Koetter bites the bullet and admit it then he would’ve stood an honest shot at coming back. Winston is taking this one because he wants the coach to come back as well.

  38. Reach87 Says:

Dude had a delay of game. He had one all friggen year. 7-8 coaches get paid to watch that clock too. They can call timeout too. Stop trying to tie everything that doesn’t go your way into “its Winston’s fault”. Sounds like we’ve gone from 10th grade to 3rd. Worst rat fans ever. Go Bucs!

  39. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

^^ No doubt, Reach. It was literally JW’s first one of the season. Did it suck? Yes. And it should not have happened, Jameis. But it was the first one of the year.
