“They Could Have [Had] Brentson Buckner”

Warren Sapp talks D-line coach Brentson Buckner

A little NFC South intrigue was dropped by none other than No. 99 himself yesterday.

Of course, like any man obsessed with studying all things Bucs, Joe listens closely to the words of Buccaneers royalty, which includes Warren Sapp on his Route 99 podcast. There Sapp was gushing about the Bucs’ Sunday beating of the Panthers, “That defense look like it want to bite again, baby,”

Sapp praised and threw his support to Jameis Winston and talked a bit about the game before taking a shot at the Panthers, who fired defensive staff members after the loss.

“Hey, man, they fired their D-line coach,” Sapp said. “I know they’re not hunting the quarterback. They could have [had] Brentson Buckner.”

Then Sapp laughed and pretended he didn’t know the microphone was live. “No, don’t do that Sapp. Stop. Is this thing on? Hey man, a little personal thing.”

It sure sounds like Sapp is saying after Buckner was fired by the Cardinals in mid-January, Buckner wanted to coach the Panthers’ defensive line.

Buckner was a very popular Panthers player and spent years as a sports radio host in Charlotte before diving into coaching. Instead, Carolina signed Brady Hoke for the job in late January. He was fired this week.

Buckner signed with the Bucs in mid-February — after Tampa Bay agreed to extend former defensive line coach Jay Hayes’ contract into 2019. Hayes surprisingly was fired a matter of days after locking down his money.

Obviously, Buckner has done a strong job since arriving in Tampa. The Bucs rank 12th in the NFL in sacks with 33.

Joe’s awfully glad he’s not coaching up the Panthers.

The Bucs D-line seems to be firing on all cylinders now. Carolina’s loss is our gain. Coach em’ Buck.

  2. gbobucsfan Says:

IF this coaching staff is fired, they must find a way to keep Buck.

  3. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Think about that and what ppl think of buckner as a coach in NFL circles; his DC fvrom arizona does not hire him in NYG, then the panthers and a defensive minded coach in Carolina does not hire him, he accepts a lame duck job from licht; licht who has ZERO judge of any playing or coaching talent, but buckner comes here….what has buckner contributed to this team? JPP? im pretty sure he could play on the new Mars nfl team and get double digit sacks but aside from game 12, havent seen much from the DL and that points at the Def scheme and ultimately the position coach.

2 decent games against the worst team and Cam Newton with a bad shoulder and we’re crowning them. Hold your horses everyone, the true bucs that we’ve come to love will show up this week at the den of depression, they will not disappoint.

    dusty

the giants have a new front office and new HC….dave gettleman wanted his guys and pat shumer wanted his coaches….

ARZ Gm fired bruce and hired steven wilks….wilks wanted his coaches…

thats pretty common….when dirk was promoted he hired his coaches(smitty)

as much as i like buckner, its rare for the new regime to keep some of the old staff….why, because there’s a reason they were hired in the first place…..

but if KRIS RICHARD was going to keep a coach from this staff, i think i would be buckner….

EA, glad you have so much enthusiasm for the Bucs. You optimism runeth over.

  9. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Again…don’t tell me. Show me.

Against tough opponents. Like this next game. If the defense shuts down the Saints, then I’m sold on Buckner and Duffner, because winning out should be much easier.

  10. Realbucfan941 Says:

That is no indictment on Buckner. He may rub some people the wrong way with his personality, doesn’t mean he can’t coach.

    EA is right.

We gotta see some consistency before we’re celebrating that we’ve turned the corner.

  12. BuccYa Says:

I’m with EA. 2 games. Where was this 50mil D-Line for the first 10 games? I swear the only reason everyone likes Buckner so much is because he yelled at GMC once during training camp so GMC haters automatically are in love. SMH.
