The Impact Of GMC

December 8th, 2018

Disruption.

One of the Bucs’ best players also happens to be one of its least popular players.

That’s part of the sad state of the NFL in the Tampa Bay area.

Joe doesn’t fully understand why Gerald McCoy is routinely raked over the coals by fans. For years.

The only explanation logical to Joe is that GMC isn’t Warren Sapp. To which, Joe replies, outside of maybe Aaron Donald, who is?

One big repeated gripe about GMC is that he doesn’t make “big plays, even though Joe has seen GMC make big plays.

And in the mind of former NFL offensive lineman and current NFL talking head Brian Baldinger, not only did GMC make big plays last week in a win over Carolina, but the Bucs may have lost the game if not for GMC.

Joe remembers when former Bucs coach Raheem Morris would laud GMC for “disruption.” This drove fans nuts. They didn’t want to hear anything about disruption; they wanted to see sacks, as if GMC was supposed to be the next Bruce Smith.

Well, Baldinger, in the video below demonstrates how disruption Sunday was more important than a sack or sacks.

The way GMC always talks about how his body is beat up (Joe’s seen with his own eyes how GMC is in real pain after games), it wouldn’t give Joe a stroke if GMC hung up his cleats in the near future. Dude’s body has taken a pounding and he currently is on the wrong side of 30 after 119 games.

At that point, (many) Bucs fans likely will learn the hard way that GMC was valuable.

Whatever you do don’t let Tmax is a beyotch see this… he will die if his feeble mind finally pays enough attention to understand that GMC is a beast…

But man how much better can it get. Forget sacks man I’ll take an interception caused by a lineman over a sack anydag.

Defense seems to have started clicking. Reaaally hoping the results from this Sunday will be indicative of further progress – not the other way around (which we’re all too familiar with).

    Go Bucs!

  2. Realbucfan941 Says:

Lol. Where are all the GMC bashers? Doesn’t fit your narrative I take it…

  10. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

I think because we have sucked so long and McCoy has been here so long, the simple minds try to make some kind or correlation. He is just a good player on some bad teams.
Is he as good as Donald? No! But who is? Since when is it a knock that he isn’t as good as maybe the greatest D tackle to ever play the game?

  11. Bryan Says:

If you sum up “all of the Glazer’s loot” that has been handed to GMC, it will represent the worst ROI in buccaneers history. Simple as that!

  12. mesh Says:

The thing with GMC is… he’s a very nice guy. Football is a violent sport that requires a level of intensity that people generally pull from a place of anger. GMC doesn’t. If he ever did, I think he would be better than he is, but more importantly i believe his soft nature (not an insult) takes the aggressive edge off of some of his teammates. That’s a problem. Losing sucks, and it should piss you off and leave that anger festering until the next contest.

Gerald McCoy is a great player with a good heart. As i said… A nice guy.

The bucs need some edge. The intensity that Sapp, Lynch, And Brooks had. Maybe they can find their way without that. JPP seems to do well without it and they have certainly done well the last two weeks… If that continues? Who knows?

  13. AfrikaThaRapper Says:

As far as criticism of GMC goes, I just think that fans equate our sorry defense over the years with him. He being the face of said defense. Go Bucs.

  14. martinii Says:

If you sum up “all of the Glazer’s loot” that has been handed to GMC, it will represent the worst ROI in buccaneers history. Simple as that! ”

I seldom comment on a post because most are predicated on emotion or the pretense that someone has a contribution related to football as it pertains to the Buc’s. However I was unable to tap that accounting principle from my MBA Degree where Return on Investment, The Glazer’s loot and the performance of a six time Pro Bowler actually demonstrates a quantitative conclusion of verifiable facts. No, this is from a GMC hater that is trying to convince their readers that Mc Coy is a bad football player by using false statistical data. I challenge you to solve your hypothesis for ‘N.”

  15. McBuc Says:

Brooks and Lynch were always known as nice guys. Being sportsmen does not make you a bad player. The entire you cannot be a good nice guy and play football argument holds no water at all.

  16. Dooshlarue Says:

Ah shucks, I just hope he was having fun.

  17. tmaxcon Says:

10 years not a single playoff win…… enough said….. talented player but a locker room cancer that does not understand how to win. the results prove it.

  18. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

Impact of gmc???? Aka BIG FAT SOFTIE?! 2 plays out of 60 all year = $12 million dollars ????? GTFO… GMC is fat over bloated and over paid

  19. Defense Rules Says:

Excellent piece Joe, and that video was perfect (Baldy was spot on). GMC’s ‘problem’ is that he happens to be the face of a perennially losing franchise. Comparing him to Aaron Donald though is laughable. Might be more appropriate to compare Donald’s teammate … some guy named Ndamukong Suh … to McCoy? That is of course unless Bucs’ fans don’t believe that the ‘quality’ of your teammates doesn’t impact others’ performances.

Researching the Rams’ site about Donald & Suh, it was interesting that their pass rush has been awesome (Donald has 16.5 sacks already this season) BUT their rushing defense has been very erratic. In 2 games against Seattle this year, Rams defense gave up 190 yds rushing in the 1st game & 273 yds rushing in the 2nd game (Rams won BOTH games BTW, despite giving up 31 pts in each of those games).

Bucs seem to be having a similar problem lately. Smitty focused on stopping the run (Bucs gave up an average of 84 YPG rushing through the first 5 games this year). But his pass defense got eaten alive as a consequence (Bucs gave up an average of 356 YPG passing through the first 5 games this year). Won the first 2 but lost the next 3 … and Smitty went bye-bye.

Duffner has focused on stopping the pass, but has paid the price in the run game. Bucs gave up an average of 216 YPG passing in these last 7 games this year, an improvement of 140 YPG which is pretty dramatic IMO. BUT … Bucs have given up an average of 147 YPG rushing in these last 7 games, worse by 63 YPG. Realistically what we’ve done is trade improved passing defense (140 YPG better) for worse rushing defense (63 YPG worse) … a needed trade-off, but not a prescription for long-term success.

Against mediocre teams, Bucs can get away with that (and yes, the Browns, 49ers & even the Panthers right now are mediocre teams). But against teams with a strong rushing attack (like the Saints, Ravens & Cowboys) the Bucs’ defense has to perform better against the run or those teams will control the clock & keep our offense on the bench. Not a good prescription for winning long-term.

  20. Todd Says:

McCoy has been and is a beast. Sapp and Ian Beckles can go f—k themselves. They take the same pot shots at Vea. It’s their giant size egos, mouths and egos that necessitate they build their old selves up by knocking other Bucs talent down. Makes my skin crawl.

  21. Buccaneerscotty Says:

He’s one of my favorite players! Been standing up for him from the 1st time I came to this site look it up…

  22. Tampabaybucfan Says:

The GMC haters are the same posters who want to lose in order to get a better draft pick….they want to get rid of an obviously very productive player….
History is rich with players who contributed nothing and made millions of dollars from the Glazers….GMC is not one of them.
His Teammates like him, his Coaches like him, his GM likes him, his Owners like him, his Opponents like him, the Media likes him and Joe likes him. Shouldn’t that count for something?

  23. james west Says:

i’ll be dancing when he freaking retires, good bye bat boy, and good riddance

  24. ATrain Says:

    Yep Joe

FANS ARE DUMB THATS WHY GMC GETS CRAP

Why has some NFL players including Sapp at one time called GMC out for soft play.

    GMC is A good player
He is not Elite and I think that is want drives sone Fans Nuts.

He is held up like he is the Best DT to every play and a great leader. Who has held him up as a great leader?? –Joe

When a Fan sees 100 million payed out we Look for a game changer ever game
    GMC is not

    Good plays in games yes
But I have gone back and rewatched games to see him pushed down the line like a rag doll

I KNOW JOE YOU WONT CRITICIZE GMC
    I GET IT
DONT THROW AWAY THE KEY TO THE LOCKERROOM — You, yourself, just called McCoy a good player. C’mon, man. Get real. Gerald McCoy doesn’t control any “key” to the locker room. No player does. –Joe

  25. Kord Says:

It’s just people jealous of how much he makes. Most productive tackle we have had since Sapp.

  26. BucEmUp Says:

Window is closing..Gmc and JPP were lucky Mike Smith was thrown out but to late Maybe?

Win out boys you.might make the playoffs if you do!

  27. Not there yet Says:

Lol great is a big word to throw around for a guy whose played during one winning season and injured for the other. Valuable yes good yes but great? Don’t make me throw on my phone. Dude had a couple decent games and this one good game all year and excuses come out of nowhere. You don’t have to be Warren Sapp or Aaron Donald to have an impact. So weird to get on Winston at 24 for being inconsistent but McCoy has been inconsistent for a decade and all I hear is excuses. With the help he has he should have been playing like this all year long. Beckles game him props for this game “a game” so apparently bucs fans have a different definition of the word elite. 3 good games a year doesn’t say elite or great to me. Quarterbacks and pass rushers can’t have 3 good games a year.

  28. adam from ny Says:

why is gerald trying to look all like “bruce lee X john shaft” in the pic…dam bruhhh

  29. OneBuc55 Says:

    @Bucemup

Winning out is a longshot, but possible…this team will go as far as our Defensive line and Jameis takes them…

Play smart, play fast, and most importantly, play pissed off…
    Go Bucs!

  30. adam from ny Says:

the reason jpp plays like he does is because he eats brontosaurus burgers…gerald does not…

if gerald goes bronto he would no longer act like tonto

  31. Ndog Says:

You see Joe what you fail to realize is that games like these are what we expect from the #3 overall pick and highest player on defense. The reason it has been a big deal this week is because he actually lived up to what he supposed to do all the time. This game last week should be the norm NOT the exception.

  32. Buc believer Says:

Like I said he did have a good game…. what about all the games he never showed up in??? LOVE to see that film!

  33. VaTom Says:

People don’t like GMC simply because of his personality. It’s asinine. It’s about how a guy plays. I don’t care if he dresses in a tutu on weekdays and sings show tunes. All I care about is how he plays Sunday and GMC has been the most consistent player on this team since he’s been here. Year in year out. Yeah, he was hurt the first few yrs. But he’s never given up. He just doesn’t play the make believe tough guy game. Dudes just a stand-up guy who’d be fun to grab a beer with. Or Prosecco. Or whatever the hell floats his boat.

  34. Doctor Stroud Says:

The fact is that opposing teams game plan for GMC, and we haven’t had a defensive coordinator to make adjustments. On pass plays, offensive coordinators know that he will blow through the line with his quick ‘get off’, and blockers don’t have to work very hard in allowing him to rush to the gap where he already wants to go and direct the play somewhere else (or alternatively double team him when they want to run a play at him). Those are the times when other players need to step up. What I notice on those two plays (granted, not a great sample size) is that GMC performed stunts that the blockers didn’t recognize. They seemed confused based on their footwork and where they seemed to be looking. Those just happened to be the right calls for the right plays. Now, is this “disruption” worth spending a significant portion of the salary cap on one player “on the wrong side of 30”? The Bucs will need to plan for life after GMC soon enough.

  35. Dooshlarue Says:

    TBBF

Sorry to blow up your theory about all GMC haters wanting to lose for a higher draft pick.
I’m a proud Softie93 hater and ALWAYS want us to win.
    Been that way since 1976.
We are better without his soft azz.

    Oh…..

    Don’t make me laugh!

  36. PhillyBuc Says:

So those 2 plays are worth $12MM? Look at his stats, he’s a vastly over paid underachiever. Maybe some other teams will be suckered into his once a season ‘2-play game’ and we can get some trade value for him.

  37. Anonymous Says:

Terrible defenses with him and terrible without him.. not worth the $

  38. '79Defense Says:

The sad thing is that if he had been a total bust and out of the league after two or three years he would have taken much less abuse than he does now.

By all accounts a great guy who gives it his all, only to be handed abuse from so many morons. To think of all of the tough guy putzes around here who say things about him that they would never say to his face.

Thanks for the hard work, GMC. Too bad you didn’t have some talent around you all these years.

  39. Ray Rice Says:

So you are telling me that he’s been an outstanding player all his career? The fact that you dummies call him pro bowler (and think that’s something special) deserves a slap. That’s the most watered down award there is. And still some will argue it isn’t. I don’t give a flying F about awards. I want to see him make plays, not dance. No excuses saying he doesn’t have help etc. You guys have pined for him having a double digit sack guy. He has one now. Have you seen a difference? Nope. Be gone Geraldine McBooty!

  40. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

So, what does Chris “Mad Dog” Russo have to think about Geraldini?

  41. Defense Rules Says:

Joe, I’m curious. Send in a comment on this story at about 6 AM that just disappeared. No bad language or anything like that. Not the first time that’s happened to me, and others have had the same thing happen to them from what I’ve read in their subsequent comments. Has JBF changed its policy about what passes for an ‘acceptable’ comment?
Many here are flagged permanently for misrepresenting Joe and/or Joe’s writing. So that can cause a delay in the comment approval process. –Joe

  42. SenileSenior Says:

GMAC has a “nice” personality, Sapp was a “surly ahole”.

A certain percentage of all football fans have a very basic and superficial level of thinking about what football is. They only see the brutal and competitive side.

Football is also a thinking man’s game. It is like a chess match. This is common to all team sports.

Sapp and GMAC were/are great players because of their brains also. All players have to be smart as well as athletic to excel. The guys on the line are as bright as any of the other players at any position.

So what else is old? Not saying anything that hasn’t been said before.
    ___________
    Go Bucs!!!

  43. Bradentonbuc Says:

The hate is unreal. It literally is the equivalent of flat-earther’s logic. GMC deserves better then what Dominik and Licht have thrown out there on the ends and call it help.

  44. '79Defense Says:

Joe, wondering the same thing as what Defense Rules mentioned.

  45. Reach87 Says:

The most ignorant part of the argument is calling McCoy soft. You anoint yourself a bonified moron when that is part of your argument. If you believe (truly) he is soft you are in fact not worth listening to or debating with when it comes to production, pay, pro bowls, etc. You simply have no clue. Go Bucs!

  46. Reach87 Says:

ps: worth every penny. Not (not) your money. May be slowing but still making plays and being studied by real analysts (did you not see the video above?). Go McCoy! Love you on this team! Thanks for your leadership, drive, and meaningful plays to cinch the win last week. Give us more! Go Bucs!

    ______

GMC is a big fat softie, you know why? Because he doesn’t produce as much as he’s paid. And you know what? He apologizes to quarterbacks after hitting them, and helps his opponents get off the ground, and he laughs and giggles while being on a losing team. That makes him a big fat softie

  48. tmaxcon Says:

Simply a career loser who has not nor will ever win a single meaningful win in his career

  49. Dave Says:

It is really simple to me, the people who bash GMC think every DT should be Sapp or Aaron Donald, that’s just not realistic. Gerald McCoy is better than 95% of the DTsin the NFL since he came into the league.

Basically the haters are simply ignorant.
    Pseudo fans.
They don’t know a damn thing about football

  50. Buc4Life Says:

GMC is the 2nd best DT we’ve ever had and are lucky to have him. Haters are just that, haters. They will always find a target to hate. Heck, Taylor Swift even wrote a song about it!!!

  51. Bucnjim Says:

Talk about beating a dead horse. Those of us who don’t care for him have eyes and can see his effort or in this case lack of. No big deal some like him some don’t but to say people are idiots and morons because we don’t agree with a specific opinion is crazy. When the majority of fans on this site agree we have a pretty damn good record of being right. Very little of this argument has to do with skill set it is the inconsistent lack of effort. Three words make me dislike McCoy….back side pursuit. Sapp was relentless as is JPP on our team now. Does not matter where the play is even if it’s 20 yards down field those guys are at least attempting to make a play. McCoy is standing there watching like a fan on the sideline. If you are lucky he might jog a few yards to get a closer look at what’s going on.

  52. Bucnjim Says:

The worst part is we went out and picked up an extremely good/great player in JPP. This is his first year on the Bucs and every week he plays like this is his last. He is here showing you what a great player does to help his team and its evident to anyone who watches Bucs games. If you think McCoy is anywhere near JPP in effort or talent I don’t know what to say. Maybe being bad for so long everyone is happy with above average.

  53. Bradentonbuc Says:

Lol at the commenters who say ‘all the fans can see it why can’t the bucs’? You come to this site for its honesty and thoroughness. The joes have asked a number of offensive-minded individuals what’s up with GMC. All of them say he is a force to be accounted for. Yet you yell at sky like the anti-trump loons as if you know better. Just because the joes allow you to spew your half-baked opinions and others share it doesn’t make it a valid or objective opinion.

  54. JimmyJack Says:

I think JPP is rubbing off on McCoy. Beckles said last week was some of the best football he can recall from McCoy. I agree and will even say I saw a bit of dog in Gerald.

If this continues then look out. But let’s be honest and not have a kneejerk reaction. He played well in the 49ers game too. Ok 2 games. That’s not going to be good enough to change my opinion on Gerald. If he can keep it up and close out the season consistently I will take bavk what I said about Gerald and his “don’t make me laugh” campaign.

And the guy who said Gerald is a lockerroom cancer needs to be ignored. He must have been dropped on his head as a baby.

  55. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “Many here are flagged permanently for misrepresenting Joe and/or Joe’s writing. So that can cause a delay in the comment approval process. –Joe”

  57. tmaxcon Says:

You are what your record says you are…. results prove cancer93 is the undisputed face of the basement years and a career loser void of heart, pride or the drive to great. Avg dt and most overrated buc of all time which ssys a lit given all the garbage that has played for this minor league franchise. You are either a winner or a loser and cancer93 is a loser the results prove it.

All you low standard losers can spin it anyway you like but the 100 million dollar cryin clown never made those around him better nor dies he understand what it takes to be a winner. Quitters like cancer93 are horrible role models

  59. JimmyJack Says:

Probably not, I see you are still crying g about the Buccaneers from 1999. Your stuck in the past and thusly irrevelant

  62. JimmyJack Says:

  63. ATrain Says:

    I maybe wrong

But I pretty sure GMC was held up as the Face of the Franchise
    Especially before Jamies. ie LEADER

AND YES JOE I have stated many times GMC is a good player

BUT ON THIS SITE HE IS SHOWN AS THE ELITE DT

    NO.

Elite means you are a game changer like Aaron Donald. Mack. JJ Watt

  64. Season Is Over Says:

McCoy made his 16 million this year. What else matters? JPP has shown in months what a loser this guy was for a decade.

  65. JimmyJack Says:

I’ll be curious to see how McCoy plays on Sunday. There is no rule against having a resurgence during the back end of your career.

I have to admit this looks like the most talented line McCoy has ever been on!! For now and in the future.
