The Return Of Mark Dominik?

December 11th, 2018

Name surfaces from NFL backchannel chatter.

Joe’s going to go all national TV reporter here, and since TV reporters on the national level (CNN, FOX, NFL Network) often have to drum up many minutes of content a day, Joe’s going to try to duplicate their feats.

Therefore, Joe will dump speculation atop speculation.

Yesterday, Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network spoke about who might be the next general manager of the Raiders now that Reggie McKenzie and Oakland parted ways.

Rapoport suggested a few names that could replace McKenzie. He mentioned it likely will be someone that has worked with Chucky in the past.

Of course, the first name Rapoport dropped was that of Bruce Almighty, Chucky’s front man with the Bucs. However, Rapoport’s suggestion that Bruce Almighty could be leaving the Redskins for the Raiders was quickly shot down by various media outlets in our nation’s capital.

The next name Rapoport threw out was another blast from Bucs past.

“Mark Dominik, another person from [Jon] Gruden’s past, has drawn some speculation,” Rapoport said.

Now Joe is going to pile on here and speculate further. If Dominik’s name is being floated, that tells Joe that Dominik wants back in the game. He has been out of an NFL front office since he was shoved aside by incoming failure Lovie Smith, though Dominik has worked covering the NFL in both TV and radio since his departure from Tampa Bay.

(Dominik lives and works in Nashville when he is not on the SiriusXM NFL Radio airwaves. Joe still isn’t quite clear what Dominik does but it sounds like he works for a legal, above-board NFL loan shark outfit. Apparently, Dominik’s firm recruits players entering the league and fronts them, say, $500,000 cash or seed money, but in turn they have to hand over — Joe’s just throwing a ballpark figure out here — 10 percent of their future earnings.)

Now here is where it gets interesting and Joe is going to speculate upon speculation. Dominik worked for Team Glazer for over two decades. He was a loyal soldier. And Joe knows for a fact Team Glazer and Dominik have a strong bond. And Dominik was ran the show the last time the team won 10 games.

A lot of Dominik’s players Lovie wanted no part of but they were players who went on to have success with other teams. Namely, Darrelle Revis, Donald Penn, Mark Barron and Mason Foster, among others.

Joe is not saying the Bucs should run AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht. But how crazy would it be if Dominik is brought back in some capacity, say as a Bucs consultant of some sort?

Joe has learned one thing about Team Glazer; they are predictably unpredictable.

Meanwhile, you can view Rapoport’s full report below.

Past history says Gruden and Allen will reunite

    The Return Of Mark Dominik?

    Definition of a-s-s-backward.

  3. Defense Rules Says:

This must be a VERY SLOW Tuesday morning for news.

In other news, it’s still night outside. National reporters are speculating that it’ll lighten up once the sun rises.

  4. Dooshlarue Says:

The Joes need extra Christmas cash.
I like the way you got out in front of it right off the bat.

  5. westernbuc Says:

Honestly the loan shark gig sounds better than the Raiders GM

  6. Loyaltotheend Says:

I hope Gruden hires Dominik so he can destroy that franchise like he did to the Bucs

  7. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

If the Glazer boys were only smart enough to open their checkbook wide and say to Father Tony Dungy- ” Sorry about that whole mess when we fired you , but could you come back as President of Football operations with total control? ” . Let Father Dungy retool this sinking ship and get it back on course , not because we owe him anything , but because he is the right man for the job.

  8. Cobraboy Says:

    Sure.

    And bring Schiano with him.

  9. Joe Blahak Says:

    I figured this mess out….Trade a #1 and future #1 for Rich McKay 🙂

  10. lambchop Says:

Glazers are predictably unpredictable….that pretty much sums up every team and ownership in this league. Nobody lays their cards down until the showdown at the river.

  11. lambchop Says:

The only thing predicable is Jon Gruden getting Reggie fired. Getting rid of your Pro Bowl DE in Mack and WR Cooper was a sure fire way to make sure this team tanks. The Raiders are F U C T for a good while. Makes me shed tears of laughter.

  12. Bob in Valrico Says:

IF licht stays, there is a very good argument that one or two front office types be brought in to fix this team.Licht should be in charge of waiver wire, getting players off practice squads, UFA’s and trades. His free agent signings have not been good.
Dungy would be good good at building a coaching staff, and possibly player
evaluation. Being a GM takes experience. You have to wonder why seasoned front office men like Dominic and Licht have not been that successful. We need a fresh
look and a new plan to pull this franchise out of the basement.

  13. Just the facts Says:

So many of you think the worst GM was the last one with a 10 win team, drafted three first team All Pros, still has 4/5 first rounders still starting in the league and more wins than Licht?

  14. Jameis Almighty! Says:

Raiders fire general manager. Dadgummit, wrong team, pirate theme. Hopefully Licht gets a thundering Aussie kick next. fireeeeee Licht!

  15. Jameis Almighty! Says:

I’d rather have Ricky Williams than Rich McCay…

  16. Buc believer Says:

If he is brought back as a consultant do the exact OPPOSITE of what he says! Just like George from Seinfeld. Then success is guaranteed…… HOW THE HELL DOES THIS A… WIPES NAME KEEP COMING UP? The dude was a joke as a GM!!!!

  17. Bucsfanman Says:

Wow! And I thought that I was the only one drinking at 6 am this morning!!!

  18. El Buco Realisto Says:

Donald Penn signed with the Bucs in 2007 2 years before talk show Dominik tried to pretend to be the GM in Tampa!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  21. Bucsfanman Says:

LUV- You could almost just write “Jason Licht” over Dom’s name. That’s what we have.

  22. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Bucsfanman

    Sad but true.

  23. Bucsfanman Says:

LUV- And yet, there are people who think he should be retained. Where are you with that?
I’m in the “fire everybody” mode!

  24. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Joe has been very kind to Mark Dominick since he’s been gone…..rarely a disparaging word…..Joe’s kindness would pay off big time if Dominick returns to the Bucs……That, my friends, is the only possible positive with a Dominick return.

  25. Tampa2ATL Says:

    Licht > Dominick. Easy call.

  26. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Hire (Former Vice President/GM – Texans) Rick Smith

Since Licht contract is paid for in 2019 – I would Keep on for another year at a reduced role. Utilize his resources. And possibly move on in 2020 – if he’s not happy with his new role in the organization.

  27. BurgDweller Says:

Only took one season for Gruden to destroy what was an up and coming franchise. No way he lasts 10 years.

  28. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Rick Smith GM Record

Rick Smith was instrumental in drafting several key components of their 3-4 defensive front

  29. Loyaltotheend Says:

    Dumbinik highlights

-trades a 1st rounder for a CB coming off a bad acl when he was bidding against himself
    -resigned Mike Clayton
    -let Michael Bennett walk
    -drafted Mark Barron over Kuechly
    -let Matt Bryant go
    -trades Talib

Yep he will fit right in with the Raiders

  30. theodore Says:

Dominick is the perfect here. The Bucs are a losing culture and to maintain that losing culture you have to keep to doing the same things over and over and hire the same coaches/execs over and over and resign the same players over and over.

  31. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Time to pull the scab off the b!tch.

Sale off a variety of valuable (to someone) maturing assets.
For younger miscast prospects and or draft capital.
Utilize the additional cap space to acquire players to fit the new scheme (s).

  32. Dooshlarue Says:

Yeah letting Matt Bryant go is unforgivable.

  33. Doctor Stroud Says:

Talking Heads-lovin’ ex-GM Mark Dominik burned down the house when he ran the Bucs. Ever since his bad drafts, bad free agents, and poor decisions, we’ve been on a road to nowhere. Well, at least, he has had a wild wild life collecting Glazer loot. Isn’t he still under contract? #PaidFloridaVacation

  34. Ed kerber Says:

Bucs have never won without a McKay. Get someone from that family please!

  35. Defense Rules Says:

    @Tampa2ATL … “Licht > Dominick. Easy call.”

Licht>Dominick=Both sucked as GMs. Easier call. (Love modern-day math).

  36. Joe Blahak Says:

    @Ed kerber…
yes sir!, “Bring McKay back to the Bay!”

  37. Defense Rules Says:

@Bucsfanman … “I’m in the “fire everybody” mode!” Me too, but only if the Glazer Boyz are willing to relinquish ‘control’ to a President of Football Operations. If they’re the ones hiring the next GM & HC, we’re in for more mediocrity. The committee-approach to ownership & decision-making doesn’t work all that well (compromises kill the ‘vision’ that’s needed to build champions IMO).

  38. 813bucboi Says:

    let’em be chuckys puppet…..lol…

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  39. ManzielMadness Says:

Thanks for making me spit out my coffee this morning lol! Idk too much about upcoming GMs. I know a lot of people wanted Eliot Wolf to take over Green Bay last year when TT left. Maybe give him an interview?

  40. Joe Says:

Donald Penn signed with the Bucs in 2007 2 years before talk show Dominik tried to pretend to be the GM in Tampa!!!!!!!!

Dominik was pro player personnel director with Bucs when Penn signed. That was Dominik’s find.

  41. El Buco Realisto Says:

    @joe

Then you should name the player personnel director’s for the other players while talk show Dominik play pretended to be gm if that is your angle!!!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  42. Buc believer Says:

I think the way Joe sucks up to Dominic (unquestionably one of the worst GMs in NFL history) it makes one wonder if either of the Joes have some kind of business interest in Dominic’s scheme err business of loan sharing future NFL stars? A good question that should be answered.

  43. Marine Buc Says:

    Mark Dominik is a JOKE!!!

  44. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

^ You are the only one asking it lol

  45. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Joe

    That was Dominik’s find.

Says who? Mark Dominik or Bruce Allen?

Based on the recommendations of a colleague – Did Bruce Allen tell Dominik to go check out Donald Penn?

  46. SoFloBuc Says:

    That’s crazy talk!!Nooooooo to Dominik!!!

  47. El Buco Realisto Says:

So funny to hear joe have to reach so far to give talk show Dominik credit for anything!!!!!!!

You should give him credit for the superbowl win in 2002 because he made a couple of great coffee pots for the office!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  48. 813bucboi Says:

so funny to hear @realist talk about the failures of past staff members but refuses to except the fact that this current staff led by dirk has failed miserably….each year we’ve added talent, dirk has under performed…..

i guess the only thing he’ll get credit for is canning his besty smitty…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  49. SG Says:

Joe – It was me who said this a while ago – Possible crazy things that the Bucs can do and you had a laugh at it.

  50. denjoe Says:

Joe is not saying the Bucs should run AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht.

    Why Not?

  51. Issaic haggins Says:

Rich McKay hands down !! President of football operations And sitting board member, Light can stay in the A depowered roll And keep his title

  52. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Never going to happen.

May as well suggest Rich McKay.
